Back into the doldrums
Leofwine_draca15 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Given the supernaturally-focused climax of the last episode, this one plods back into the doldrums by carrying on the lifeless (literally and figuratively) story about Bill Malloy's death. Victoria travels around the area a bit, Burke continues to raise hell, and Roger acts as shady as ever.

Roger tries but fails to get a straight answer.

Warning: Spoilers
Oh that rascally Roger Collins, defending himself passive/aggressively at every chance he gets, only briefly rattled by an encounter with Burke who comes across him and Vicki sharing a quiet cup of coffee and conversation about their suspicions over Bill's death. The more Roger speaks, the more he seems to be implicating himself, and it is through Louis Edmund's sly performance that he seems to think he will get away with it. As the sheriff, Dana Elcar doesn't give away anything he knows, giving indication to the popular character actor he would become a decade later. Edmunds dominates the first half of the underwhelming episode, while Mitchell Ryan dominates the second half, with Alexandra Moltke simply overpowered by them because of their fiery determination for the characters to outwit each other. While the indoor scenes are decently filmed, if placid, the scenes which take place outdoors accelerate the cheapness of the show's photography.

"Sardines Don't Stand a Chance"

At Collinwood, Roger (Louis Edmonds) calls Sheriff Patterson (Dana Elcar) and learns the coroner's report on Bill Malloy's death is due today. Planning to take her to Patterson's office and work on his alibi, Roger invites Vicki (Alexandra Moltke) to tour the Collins Cannery and have breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Burke visits Patterson, also hoping for news about Malloy's death. Roger hopes the report concludes accidental drowning; Burke believes murder is the cause of death...

This episode shows off some depth in the sets. We have filmed footage of Vicki and Roger walking from the restaurant to the police station, and Vicki later returns to the "Collins Port Inn". It's possible some dubbing was planned for Vicki and Roger's filmed walk, but we hear only Robert Cobert's music. Something is causing the sheriff's overhead light to sway and Mr. Ryan has some amusing trouble with lines. Carol Crist takes over the role of silent, smiling restaurant waitress Susie...
