I want MORE!!!
planktonrules8 June 2008
This is a very frustrating short because it is so short and I really wanted more. I assume the writer and director made this film as a demo so they could learn the craft and move on to bigger projects. Or, perhaps, this was the project they wanted to do more of but made a short to secure funding for a film or TV series. All I know is that this short hooked me and I wanted more.

What, exactly, did I like? Well, the whole mind-numbing and sarcastic look at corporate America was funny and is reminiscent of one of my favorite recent TV shows--"Dead Like Me". In this show, in addition to being a grim reaper, the main character is a very small cog in a corporation and all the silly game playing and strange personalities you see in this office is highly akin to the way people cope and work in CORPORATE PUNISHMENT.

Funny, insightful and super-cynical--I really want to see what the team that made this film is doing in five years.

Warning: Spoilers
i thought it was a cute short film. it really makes sense if you've ever worked in an office before. kinda like OFFICE SPACE. the characters were believable. the onlything i didn't like was i didn't get the end at first.

SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i had to pause it a sec and see what the main girl was laughing about. then I got it. the guy sitting next to her at the bustop had a training manual for the place that just fired her. after that it made more sense to me. she was laughing because she had just gotten fired for not following the rules and now he was going in... kinda like a replacement.

pretty funny.

Overall, on target

Warning: Spoilers
Possible spoilers below!!! I found this to be a gem. It's a rather pompous and self-righteous view of corporate culture, but the filmmakers did a fine job of capturing the ridiculousness of everyday office politics and the tedium. Even 10 years later, it stands as a statement against the corporate mentality of workers as disposable, becoming even more relevant since the "great recession" hit. It looks like a student film, and I'd be interested in seeing if the filmmakers have done anything else.

A few of my favorite bits:

1) The office. It was bleak and sterile. Great set choice. 2) The closing scene at the bus stop was great. I particularly enjoyed the bench Elle was sitting on. Wise choice and a nice little twist of irony. 3) The IT guy was hilarious.

Things I didn't like: 1) The blonde woman (Sonja??) She's not mentioned by name in the film. The character was incredibly trite and obnoxious. 2) I'm into details... I think there was a misspelling on the manual in the final scene. Who was the person in charge of props? 3) The ending felt rushed. They could have lingered on the manual a little longer. I didn't quite understand why Elle was laughing and what it all meant until I watched it again.
