In the on again, off again, drama that is the Batfleck saga, new rumors have surfaced of new younger Batman to take up the mantle going forward with Matt Reeves’ The Batman.
Ben Affleck has been hot and cold about whether or not he would continue to play The Dark Knight in the Dceu. Speaking with USA Today, Affleck confirmed he is looking for a way to gracefully exit as Batman. A cool way to take his character out of the Dceu. Which is on par for the course that has been Batfleck. However the verbiage lays out that he is contemplating The Batman which is set to be directed by Reeves’ but other sources have revealed that Reeves’ might have someone else in mind.

Spoiler Alert!! Do not read if you haven't watched Thursday's season seven premiere of Scandal!
This is Olivia Pope's world, and we're all just living in it.
Scandal started its final season with a bang on Thursday night -- in more ways than one.
Within the first five minutes of the premiere, Olivia was back in bed with Jake Ballard, but despite their second round in the sheets, our favorite White House Chief of Staff made it clear that the romantic relationship was just for the sake of convenience.

Instead, Olivia had other things on her mind, like shutting down reporters on TV (more on that later) and walking through the White House likes she owns the place (because she kind of does).
Olivia was definitely on a power trip, and the minute someone tried to tell her...

Taking a glance over his filmography, it’s quick to surmise Brian De Palma’s lack of interest in the words “Inspired By” or “Based on a True Story.” His attraction to images leans so heavily towards their natural falsity rather than some kind of prosaic yet still wholly phony verisimilitude. But one of the few exceptions lends a tragic weight that few of his films have.
The true story in question is what’s commonly referred to as Incident on Hill 192: in 1966, an American army squad in the Vietnam War kidnapped a young village girl, then subsequently gang-raped and murdered her. Journalist Daniel Lang brought this to further public attention with a 1969 article in The New Yorker entitled Casualties of War, of which De Palma’s film would share the name.

Most actors, especially when pushed, will admit that one of the toughest parts of the job is delivering exposition. And this year, television’s Mvp of doling out key plot points to the audience is unquestionably Chris Cooper, the veteran character actor anchoring the narrative of Hulu’s “11.22.63.”
Read More: Review: Hulu’s ‘11.22.63’ Brings Us Some Great Grand Storytelling
As diner owner Al, Cooper only spent two weeks on the set of the limited series based on Stephen King’s 2011 novel. But those two weeks were exclusively devoted to filming an intensive series of scenes between him and James Franco. Franco plays Jake, the young man who Al tasks with the quest to save JFK via a mysterious time portal in the back of his diner — and over the course of the series, it’s Al’s advice to which Jake constantly returns.
Earlier this year, IndieWire sat down with both Cooper and showrunner/executive producer Bridget Carpenter to discuss the evolution of “11.22.63.” And when IndieWire pointed out just how much of Cooper’s dialogue was exposition, especially in the show’s earlier episodes, Carpenter laughed.
“Yes, that’s totally true,” she said. “He was like, ‘Really Bridget?’ Believe me, he was well aware of that. He was like, ‘I’m the mouthpiece for everything.’ And I’m like, ‘I know. You’re the one who knows everything.'”
But Carpenter chose not to see exposition as a dirty word, especially given the quality of the actor behind it. “Who do you want to have expose [the plot] more than Chris Cooper? So, I was like, ‘That’ll be okay. He can talk for a while.’ He was amazing — he was really, really gracious about it. Because those scenes are harder to play than other scenes, because you have to be present and emotional and I’m telling you these things we want the audience to know.”
For Cooper and Franco, those two weeks on set were almost like being in a play — especially since Franco was pretty much the only cast member Cooper had any direct involvement with, and they were basically limited to two specific locations.
“James and I worked pretty solely together, out of the diner and out of my JFK room at my home. It’s kind of where most of the scenes happen between he and I,” Cooper said. “I went in the day before with Kevin [MacDonald], the director, who wanted to show me the set — we wanted to discuss how to move around it. It was such a brilliant set. Within five minutes, it told you where to move. It told you the different areas you could work.”
And according to Carpenter, those two weeks on set with Cooper and Franco were truly memorable: “[Those days] are days that I don’t think anybody on the crew or the set would ever forget. Chris Cooper would start to talk and you could hear a pin drop.”
What did those scenes give Carpenter as showrunner? “[They get] two great actors to get to look into each other’s eyes. That’s really special. And It’s really amazing to get to be with actors who are at the very height of their game. And it’s not nothing to them. They’re not shrugging and going on. It’s electric.”
One of “11.22.63’s” most memorable moments, on a performance level, comes during one of Al and Jake’s earliest scenes — when Al tells Jake in the first episode, “I need you to go back there and prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy.” You couldn’t ask for a more blatant example of exposition, so focused and simple that in the hands of a weaker actor, it could be impossible to sell.
And Carpenter agreed about the line’s necessity. “We’re giving you the thesis of the series right here. Here’s the thesis. Focus up.”
“But you care,” she added, “because it’s Chris Cooper.”

Exciting news for fans of the Xcom series, though not so much if you're a console only gamer, as Firaxis has finally revealed a sequel to Xcom: Enemy Unknown that's coming later this year to PCs. Come inside for the first details and trailer!
I love Xcom. In fact, I don't think I can stress that enough. Strategy games are my bread and butter, and Firaxis' Xcom: Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within expansion gave us an amazing gameplay experience. Every move you made had weight behind it, from the overall mission, to how you constructed your base. It was a great pair of games. So imagine my excitement today when 2K and Firaxis announced Xcom 2.
The sequel takes place 20 years after the events of the last game where humanity lost. Xcom, this time around is operating as a shadowy covert group striking here and there tactically to try and dismantle the new regime.

Video game based movies have yet to be good, but some are less bad than others. Here is our list of the best movies based on video games so far.
In relation to books or plays, video games are a relatively new media from which to adapt a movie. As a result, filmmakers have yet to really understand what it takes to make a good video game based film. Unlike a book or play, there’s usually a limited character-based story from which a plot can be derived. Furthermore, as an adaptation of a video game, the film should at least attempt to recreate the feel and tone of the game. This typically means more action and emphasis on visuals than on characters or story. There’s only so much screen time in a feature length film, and finding that ideal balance between story and excitement is difficult to accomplish.

As everyone knows, films are generally the product of a team of artisans and technicians, a conspicuous collaboration between the nebulous nature of art and the mechanical makeup of industry, but for Ben Rivers, filmmaking is a personal, one man expedition into the unknown. Armed with a 16 mm hand held camera and an eye for poetic austerity, Rivers ventures into the backwoods of Scotland to film a kindred heart in a burly self-sustaining recluse named Jake Williams for his first feature, Two Years at Sea. In doing, he returned to the terra incognita where he lensed This Is My Land and a segment of I Know Where I’m Going, a pair of shorts that broaden his experimental cinema work while harkening back to Robert Flaherty’s one man operation of Nanook of the North, but without the hands-on direction or the cloistered cultural fascination of his documentary forefather. Plus, someone ended the episode in the back of a police car! College! Woo!
The girls got a taste of college life on the July 9 episode of Pretty Little Liars, and it did not taste good. More specifically, it tasted like bird meat and handcuffs, as Spencer (Troian Bellisario) finally traced the phone number that Tippi had been squawking about — and Hanna (Ashley Benson) got arrested! Yeah, it was one of those college parties.
Spencer, Hanna and Emily (Shay Mitchell) initially journeyed to Cicero College to track down the identity of “board shorts,” but things escalated pretty quickly — as they often do. Within minutes of arriving on campus, Spencer and Emily were at each other’s throats, and I ancitipate more tension next week as the girls didn’t exactly resolve their issues.

I first came across R. Thomas Riley's work when I read and reviewed the great collection The Monster Within Idea. Since then, R. Thomas has written several other collections and novels, and worked with some of the more well-known “small” press publishers.
From his bio: R. Thomas Riley is the author of the short story collection The Monster Within Idea (2009-2011), published by Hugo-nominated Apex Publications and re-released as a Kindle exclusive in 2011. His second story collection, Their Last Dying Acts, was released in July 2012; and Husks was released in August 2012. If God Doesn’t Show - a Gibson Blount novel (co-written with John Grover) - was published by Permuted Press and Audible.com in August 2012. The Flesh of Fallen Angels - a Gibson Blount novella (co-written with Roy C. Booth) - was published by Grand Mal Press in February 2012. Diaphanous (co-written with Roy C. Last week’s Scandal bait-and-switch that made a stalker out of Olivia’s handsome suitor Jake didn’t just take average viewers by surprise — it threw Scott Foley (a.k.a. the creeper’s portrayer) for a loop, too.
“When I read first script I was just as surprised as viewers were [about that ending],” recalls the actor, who was hand-picked for the role by Scandal creator (and his former Grey’s Anatomy boss) Shonda Rhimes. “I was like, ‘Oh, cute, they meet in a coffee shop. And there’s a coincidence that he happened to have employed a woman who was just found dead.

Sergei Eisenstein reportedly called "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" the greatest movie ever made. That's especially high praise coming from the director who virtually invented avant-garde cinema, but it's hard to argue with Walt Disney's landmark achievement. The first feature-length animated movie, "Snow White" began its record-breaking run in theaters 75 years ago this week (on Feb. 4, 1938), and it was hailed immediately, both for its instant impact in transforming the medium and for what proved to be an enduring work of screen storytelling and vivid artistry. Before "Snow White," animation was widely dismissed as crudely drawn short films with singing and talking animals, strictly for kids. But Disney proved animation could work at feature length and yield results as artistically satisfying as live-action film. Today, "Snow White" stands as the template for virtually every animated feature made since, as well as the cornerstone of all the Disney family-entertainment empire has built over the past 75 years.

Alli hasn't slept all night, probably because of the giant baby presumably rolling around in her stomach just waiting to be a pimple-faced niner. Jenna is still unsure about Alli being pregnant because she hasn't gotten tested yet but Alli's like, "listen, wench. Do you not know what happens at Degrassi? You have sex and then you get pregnant. It's just the way things work around here. Just because you ignore your child doesn't mean it's not real." Alli's mom comes in with presents and party announcements to celebrate her daughter graduating sluthood and Jenna sighs, because Alli has a point about that thing... what thing? Right, her kid. What was his name again?

"The Secret Circle" shocked fans last fall by killing off a main character and fan favorite from the source novels, Nick. At the time, Louis Hunter told us that he'd be up for returning to the Circle if the story called for it. "I think that the show being what it is, it could be really organic, and I really loved working with every single person that I worked with up in Vancouver," he said, "So if I got the chance to be on the show again, I wouldn't hesitate at all."
Within the Circle, Nick was replaced by his witch-hunter older brother, Jake (Chris Zylka). Zylka often laments the fact that viewers never got to see Nick and Jake together as brothers, so he was thrilled when executive producer Andrew Miller told the cast that Hunter would be returning as the famed traitor witch, back from the dead with a vengeance.

Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: February 3, 2012
Plot: A young lawyer (Radcliffe) is sent to a quiet English town where he learns about a ghost that haunts the villagers’ children.
Who’S It For?: Fans of the Hammer horror legacy will likely appreciate this one more than teenagers in search of some jump scares. Lovers of Daniel Radcliffe will be scratching their heads as to why he chose this movie as his first movie post-Harry Potter.
Expectations: The beginning of the movie year is a rough time for true horror movies, as evidenced by The Devil Inside and countless others shams before it. Would this movie, led by Harry Potter himself, be doomed to that pile?

The 2011 Black List, the Top Unproduced Screenplays of the year has been released. The best unproduced screenplays from The Black List 2011 is compiled by votes from over 300 “execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year’s list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman.”
Regarding the validity of The Black List, things to keep in mind:
some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though…none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. Also worth pointing out is that, as in previous years, there have been rumors that some of the participants have been accused of using the Black List to promote their own clients or friends.

[1] Each December since 2004, studio executive Franklin Leonard has compiled the best unproduced screenplays of the year, as voted by hundreds of execs, agency guys, and high-level assistants. Titled The Black List, the compendium highlights both established screenwriters and up-and-comers, and has served as a launching pad in the past for projects like Juno, Lars and the Real Girl, and (500) Days of Summer. Last year's list included Margin Call, Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hunger Games, and Snow White and the Huntsman. It should be noted that the headline is somewhat misleading -- some of these screenplays have already been acquired and are already in development, though according to Leonard none will have entered principal photography by December 31, 2011. The Rules Of The Game (Criterion) Jean Renoir’s classic from 1939 was met with a riot at its premiere and was severely cut by its distributor, available only in truncated form for two decades until it was restored to the grandeur for which it is celebrated today. A biting comedy of manners set in the upstairs and downstairs of a French country estate, the film bitterly vivisects the bourgeoisie with a gentle ferocity that will tickle the laughter in your throat. Renoir co-stars as Octave. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Introduction to the film by Renoir; Commentary written by scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich; Comparison of the film’s two endings; Selected scene analysis by Renoir scholar Chris Faulkner; Featurettes and vintage film clips; Part one of David Thomson’s “Jean Renoir” BBC documentary; Video essay; Interviews with Renoir, crew members,...

Perfect Weekend Kris Kristofferson and Sammi Hanratty in ‘The Greening of Whitney Brown.’

Within tells the story of a young girl named Rachel (Mia Ford) who can see evil spirits. For a child who has just witnessed the murder of her mother, this is somewhat of an unfortunate ability to say the least, but despite these traumatic visions she remains a sweet and good-natured girl. When Rachel begins school in a new town, she reluctantly accepts a hand of friendship from the class bully, Michelle (Sammi Hanratty) whom it does not take Rachel very long to see is possessed by an evil spirit of her own. Within is not nearly as affecting as its spooky predecessors like The Sixth Sense or The Good Son - both indisputable influences - but you can’t quite write it off as another low-rate ghost flick either. Due in large part to the performances of the two young stars, Within is a spooky thriller that has just...

The secret is out, and the circle is broken. On tonight's shocking episode of "The Secret Circle," we said goodbye to Nick Armstrong, the oft-shirtless ne'er-do-well boy next door. The twist was particularly startling given the fact that Nick is a fan favorite character from the L.J. Smith novels from which the series is adapted... not to mention the fact that actor Louis Hunter has appeared in all of the show's promotional materials up to this point.
Unfortunately for Nick fans, this isn't one of those deaths that's easily remedied by a potion or a clap-if-you-believe-in-witches spell. Zap2it spoke exclusively with Hunter last week and he confirmed that after shooting the episode, "Slither," he packed his bags.
Zap2it: How permanent is Nick's death? Were you on set again after filming this episode?

Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford contend with goo-dripping aliens in Jon Favreau's sadly humourless sci-fi western
In all the advertising for Jon Favreau's blockbuster Cowboys & Aliens, the latter element of the provocative title is presented in larger type, thus suggesting the current ascendancy of one genre over the other. Among the dozen or so listed producers are a pair of directors – Steven Spielberg, who has been behind a string of sci-fi movies, and Ron Howard, who has made two ambitious westerns, one rather good, the other a distinct failure.
Based (not surprisingly) on a graphic novel, the picture stars Daniel Craig, a stranger both to the west and to sci-fi, and Harrison Ford, who made his name in the Star Wars movies but came a cropper with his only big-screen western. They play a couple of gun-toting hardmen in post-civil war New Mexico territory, the stamping ground of...

1873: Gunslingers sip whiskey in saloons, bandits roam alongside tumbleweeds, and giant alien spaceships attack from outer space. That's the combination audiences are expected to enjoy this Friday, when epic sci-fi Western "Cowboys & Aliens" lands in theaters.
Like the title suggests, "Cowboys & Aliens" will pit the bandits and gunmen of Absolution, Arizona, against real-live space aliens. While many movies blend elements from multiple genres ("Twilight" is a vampire movie, werewolf movie, teen romance and forbidden romance all at once), fewer films attempt the boldface blend that director Jon Favreau's latest puts forth. The New York Times reported that many audiences catching the trailer believed the movie to be a comedy.
The western itself, though it calls to mind straight-shooting classics like "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly," has been a popular source for creative cross-pollination. Within the confines of the structure, movies featuring samurais, lizards, musical numbers and...

MTV recently renewed "Teen Wolf" for a second season -- a good sign for the network's cautious endeavors into scripted television. While "Skins," an Americanized version of the controversial UK show, failed to maintain viewership, "Teen Wolf" has generated considerable increasing buzz. On Tuesday, the reality-heavy network debuts its latest scripted offering, "Awkward," at 11 p.m.
While the later hour does allow for a more frank look at teen sexuality, "Awkward" succeeds in being honest without being gratuitous, which may have been the downfall of "Skins." Within the first few minutes of the show, our lead character, Jenna, loses her virginity in a summer camp supply closet. It's not exactly the Pacey-and-Joey perfect moment, which is instantly refreshing and sets the tone for the show. Yes - it's awkward.
"We're not racy to be racy," Ashley Rickards told Zap2it when she stopped by our offices to discuss the show.

The stunning Charisma Carpenter, most recently seen in 'Psychosis' and 'The Expendables' but better known for her long-running role as Cordelia Chase in both 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' and its spin-off 'Angel', will twin up in 'Deadly Sibling Rivalry'. The new family revenge tale will star Miss Carpenter as both twins (hot!) in the Hanelle M. Culpepper ('Within') helmed thriller. It sounds like a dream scenario and we at least get two Charisma's for the price of one in the flick penned by Steve Peterson and John Murlowski. We salute one of Hollywood’s most underappreciated actors, and pick out ten of Timothy Olyphant’s finest movies...
Like so many of my on-screen heroes, Timothy Olyphant manages to fit the profile of being utterly superb and massively underappreciated, with the constant ability to make every film he’s in better.
Despite appearances in some high profile movies, a starring role that will launch him to the level he deserves, one that cements his name in mainstream consciousness, still seems elusive.
Olyphant’s TV work has seen success from the swear-a-thon that is Deadwood, a recurring role in Damages with Glenn Close and as Raylan Givens, the cowboy hat wearing, shoot first, ask questions later U.S. Marshall in Justified, whose second series is currently airing on FX.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Directed by: David Yates
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes, Toby Jones, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Timothy Spall, Jason Isaacs, Bill Nighy
Running Time: 2 hrs 26 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: November 19, 2010
Complete Harry Potter coverage including Bayer’s Tsr 8/10 and interviews with the cast
Plot: While being chased by ultimate nemesis Voldemort (Fiennes), teenage wizard Harry Potter (Radcliffe) attempts with his two friends Ron (Grint) and Hermione (Watson) to seek and destroy particular powerful lockets that will help them save all of the world from unfathomable evil.
Who’S It For? Whether this is considered to be a disaster or not, fans of the franchise (a delegation that now spans multiple generations) will see this movie regardless. For outsiders, this wouldn’t be the best movie to start with, especially with the film’s casual tossing around of wizard terms.

This week's DVD and Blu-ray offerings are no longer a cash-sucking onslaught like the last few weeks, which does make it easier for our wallets.
First up, Centurion, Neil Marshall's fun epic, is finally available for us to take home, and we can definitely recommend it with good conscience. Also, series and movies from TV and their dead-tree companions are out, and they are surprisingly decent in this batch. (Well, one re-release is surely capitalizing on the popularity of its actor, and we bet you can figure out which one that is.) Finally, don't forget the duo release of a couple of Roger Corman flicks!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted an entry announcing a new film festival showcasing strictly horror films directed by women, and within that post I asked if there were any black female directors of horror amongst our readers, and, sure enough, I received some replies – 2 specifically; from Hanelle M. Culpepper and Tiffany Jackson.
Both alerted me to films they’ve made within the genre, and I’m sharing them with you all here.
First, Hanelle - her first feature, Within, won Outstanding Feature Film at the Big Bear Horror Film Festival and the Tabloid Witch Award for Best Horror Film, Best Child Actress and Best Supporting Actor. And those of you who have cable TV, you can catch Hanelle’s film on the Lifetime Network tomorrow night, July 31st, at 9Pm. It’ll air again on August 15th at 9pm, and several times in October. A DVD release is planned for September 15th.

A fright film premiering on Lifetime Networks? Don’t let the venue put you off: Director Hanelle M. Culpepper’s Within comes to the network (debuting this Saturday, July 31 at 9 p.m. Est) having won several awards, and was produced by Bigfoot Entertainment, the same outfit behind last year’s slasher sleeper Midnight Movie. Culpepper gave Fango the skinny on the flick, and passed on a few exclusive photos.

Hanelle Cuplepper's award-winning supernatural thriller film Within will premiere on Lifetime TV this week.
If you want to support genre made by black female directors, catch Within on Saturday, July 31st at 9pm Est, or the additional airing scheduled for Sunday Aug 15th at 7pm Est. You can also catch it on Lifetime's VOD channel starting August 3rd.
Within is one of those character-rich stories centered on a family facing a supernatural evil that works so well on the Lifetime Channel, which is always targeted at women viewers.
Synopsis: Nine year-old Rachel Weiss can see the evil spirits which reside within others and compel their "hosts" to do very bad things. When her new friend Michelle's penchant for naughty schoolyard pranks turns from petty theft to potentially life-threatening attacks on other children, Rachel's visions could be the key to stopping the violence and solving the mystery of a young boy's decade-old disappearance.

We admit that at times we've labeled a few genre films as being more suited to Lifetime than our readership when they veered off into soap opera-ish territory so we're more than a little curious about the network's "broad departure" (in its words) from its typical fare to present supernatural thriller Within this Saturday night, July 31st.
Synopsis:
Rachel Weiss (Mia Ford) can see evil spirits within others. She is a sweet girl with a troubled soul caused by this unique gift. After witnessing the brutal killing of her mother, Rachel and her father (Sam Jaeger) look for a fresh start by moving to a small town. Rachel quickly warms to her new schoolteacher, Abby Miller (Lori Heuring), and becomes ‘best friends’ with classmate Michelle Lowe (Sammi Hanratty).
When Michelle’s penchant for schoolyard pranks turns from good-natured fun to potentially deadly, Rachel suspects that her friend may be less than friendly.

On the heels of Deadliest Catch’s most-watched season ever, EW talked to Executive Producer Thom Beers about the evolution of his series, what it was like to film Capt. Phil Harris’ final days, and where the gritty reality show will go in its seventh season on Discovery. (Spoiler Alert: Don’t go to the jump if you’ve yet to watch tonight’s season finale).
Entertainment Weekly: What were you trying to accomplish with the season six finale?
Thom Beers: We’re back to fishing. We had a traumatic loss this season with Capt. Phil, but I think...

Never in my life did I think I would be reporting here on a Lifetime Network movie. The female-centric network is not known for blood n' guts. So what could they be airing that would bring about FEARnet's attention? Find out after the jump. The movie we are looking forward to is called Within. A young girl, Rachel, who can see "terrible spirits in the people around her" is powerless to stop her mother from being murderered right in front of her. Rachel and her dad move to a small town to start anew, but soon realize you can't run from evil, as Rachel's new best friend's dark side is revealed. The film stars child actresses Mia Ford and Sammi Hanratty, and is...
