Great little find on Amazon last night, the best film to ever come out of the city of Leeds for sure. As a Leeds lad I can say that! I think that the performance of the lead actor is something special. Loved the accents, took me back to my childhood. Filmmakers clearly know what they are doing. Low budget, all added to the experience. This film is not trying to be something it is not, knows what it is and does it very very well. Perhaps it starts a little slow but it soon kicks in. Story is very clever, loved the twists, surprisingly emotional at the end. Not enough films come out of Leeds, huge city but little impact. I will be looking out for more from these guys in the future. Get in Leeds! 8/10

Very gritty, and the characters are very believable. The acting, in my opinion is up there with some of the best I have seen. This is the sort of film that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The soundtrack is also great. If you live in Leeds you will be familiar with many of the locations which gives the film extra appeal. The film also explores other areas of the human psyche; vulnerability, faith, desperation and hope. For any amateur filmmakers out there I would recommend watching this film as an aide to creating tension within certain scenes. If I had to make a comparison for the atmosphere of the film, it would be Dead Man's Shoes, another classic.

I saw this excellent film in early 2006 and thought it was remarkable. It is a perfectly observed and deeply thought provoking insight into the world of young Yorkshire hoodlums. Portrayals of Northern street life are rare in England and the superb performance of the scumbag lead character LEE (Alistair Marshall) takes you on a transformational journey of loathing him at the start to rooting for him at the end in a very enjoyable and gripping film. Other notable performances are by Danny Thornton and Pam Hilton). The edit is supported by a superb score and has some of the most beautiful photography i have seen in an English picture. Debut feature film for director/producer Rafe Clayton, i will be looking out for his second.

Too clichéd for words.Jesus! I can tell it's a gritty Northern film as there is even a "staring at a hovering Kestrel" shot.The filming location is shot in the mean streets of studentville not Miggy or Beeston. The lead character swaggers around like something from Madchester. I didn't stay around for the cues from the Beiderbecke affair as my shift was just about to start down't pit.

This is low budget, be ready for that, it has a feel of a TV film and not really a cinema one. I imagine this is a first film? maybe made with lottery funding? That said, I enjoyed it. If you want explosions, naked people and cheesy jokes then you are probably going to be disappointed if you watch this. Anyone who likes smooth Hollywood actors with white teeth and salon hair is going to be turned off by this. This kind of film is not what audiences are used to these days and does not represent the Cinema mainstream. If you are sensitive to bad language and drug use then you are not going to like this. If you are very religious you might not want to watch this. However, if you are bored with Hollywood and you want to see alternative films, you might connect with this. The directing is actually remarkable, it reminded me a lot of Danny Boyle's first films. Dream's Ashes is not particularly easy to watch during the opening scenes but it all makes sense in the end. Some of the characters were iffy but the cinematography and film structure is intelligently realised. I can see why Dream's Ashes has received critical acclaim if not commercial success? It is a filmmakers film perhaps?

I just watched Dream's Ashes again, first saw it in my teens, it's still one of the best films i've ever seen, and now i'm pushing thirty. UK grit, Shakespearean intrigue, amazing performances, just a cool UK movie. The writing is solid and complex, the acting is just raw and honest, no pretentiousness, straight talking, hard hitting. The cinematography is a dream. The soundtrack is actually something I really appreciated this time round. Difficult to fault this movie considering it's a low budget indie. I actually like that it's an indie, it adds to the charm. Not sure if this would work with a Hollywood budget, something would be lost. Great film.
