very inconsistent
lmphil16 April 2008
I found The Cook to be both enjoyable and boring at various moments through the film. Almost everything was inconsistent. One actor would deliver a memorable performance and the next...would leave something to be desired. Mark Hengst, as the cook, was the highlight of the entire film. He was both humorous and rather frightening at times. He played a cannibal cook pretty well, I thought. Some of the girls were attractive, with some nudity (I know that's one appeal to this film).

The dialogue was mediocre...and with three screenwriters you figure they could come up with something better. Cinematography was one minute bland and uninspiring and the next fairly well done. The gore was decent...however, some of it looked particularly fake and amateur.

The plot was almost non-existent, even for a slasher film. Essentially, the sorority house gets a new cook and he's, well, not very nice.

I would avoid this unless you're particularly bored as you can find better violence, better gore, better nudity, better plot, etc. in many other slasher films. However, I do recognize that The Cook didn't have a large budget, and so the effort is admirable.

Mark Hengst carries this film...with a less interesting cook this film would be dismal.

Average Comic Slasher
claudio_carvalho22 February 2009
A new Hungarian cook (Mark Hengst) arrives in a sorority house while a group of girls travels during the weekend to Cabo. The cook does not speak any word in English and is befriended by the medical student Amy (Makinna Ridgway). While the girls stay in the house, he kills one of them, Michelle (Stefanie Solano), using her meat to prepare the most delicious dishes for the girls while he promises in Hungarian to kill everyone in the house.

The low budget "The Cook" is an average comic slasher that has some goods and awful points. First there is no plot, only a new cook that arrives and kills the girls, without any development of his character or motives. The sorority house looks like a warehouse, and the behavior of the hot girls is more for sluts than for college student, with a group of potheads, lesbians and whores. The dialogs are among the most mediocre I have ever seen. When a person befriends another, the usual first question is how your name is. The nerd Amy befriends the cook and never asks his name. Mark Hengst is great, alternating sweet, humorous and scary faces depending on the situation. The joke with "Friday the13th: The Final Chapter" is probably the best moment of this movie. As a tradition in B-movies, most of the girls are extremely sexy and their partial nudity is very attractive and sometimes erotic. The gore special effects are reasonable for a low-budget movie. The predictable conclusion is funny and in the end this movie is watchable and not so bad. My vote is five.

A watchable but still below average horror comedy
brauner25 March 2008
I've really had some trouble rating this movie. Through the first half hour of the movie I really had a feeling this movie was a complete waste of time. The special effects defied the laws of physics by sucking and blowing at the same time, even for a low budget movie, and the acting, from every angle, was to say the least very questionable. But still... Somehow there was something about it. Maybe it was simply that it didn't try too hard and didn't get too serious about the comedy being the most original ever. Or it could be the fact that it's got some very nice pairs of boobs. It's still unclear to me if it's supposed to be an actual horror movie, just a horror comedy or a comedy on the horror comedy genre. It really could've used a budget boost. If you think you can sit through a low budget horror comedy with a bit of nudity you might like it.

Almost as bad as you can get
MBunge16 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Watching this film made me regret the invention of the DVD. I really wish The Cook had been on VHS, because then I could have broken the cassette and used the tape to wipe my ass. It's THAT bad.

The story concerns a bunch of skanks who get left behind at their sorority while the other girls go Mexico for the weekend. There are three stoner skanks (Nina Fehren, Noelle Kenney and Justine Marino), a brainy skank with a face full of moles (Makinna Ridgway), a man-hungry skank (Stefanie E. Solano), a Christian skank (Brooke Lenzi), a lesbian skank (Penny Drake) and an aerobics work out skank (Kit Paquin). None of these actresses can actually, you know, act and their characters range from truly detestable to honestly annoying. A substitute cook (Mark Hengst) who speaks no English shows up at their sorority to prepare their meals for the weekend and he proceeds to kill everyone. A bunch of nonsense happens that is either logically or physically impossible and the movie thankfully ends.

Words are almost incapable of describing how horrid this film is. The writing sucks. The acting sucks. The direction sucks. The sets suck. It's not exciting. It's not scary. It's not funny. It's not sexy. There are only two things that prevent The Cook from replacing H.P. Lovecraft's Behind the Wall of Sleep as the worst movie I've ever watched.

1. There are a couple of scenes where raw meat is chopped up and fondled that are quite disgusting. The scenes are meant to be stomach-churning, so at least these filmmakers did something right.

2. While these filmmakers obviously have no talent or skill, they also obviously understand that they're making a piece of stench-ridden cinematic garbage. So, they get a couple of points for self-awareness.

One thing about The Cook makes me wonder. There is always something that these sort of no-budget, no-talent, crappy horror movies can have going for them. They can always have plenty of nudity. Even the most abominable work of cinema can find plenty of attractive women willing to take their clothes off for their big "show business break". Yet, despite having 8 reasonably pretty girls in the cast, only 2-and-a-half of them get naked and they are unclothed for a combined total of roughly one single minute. So, this pathetic trash doesn't even have enough gratuitous nudity to titillate a horny teenager.

So, while I must still admit The Cook is not the absolute worst thing I've ever seen…it's damn close. It barely qualifies as filmed entertainment and should not be viewed by anyone except death row prisoners because watching it makes execution, whether it results in Hell or oblivion, seem like not that bad an idea.

One of the worst ever
tkranjc25 December 2011
Just saw this and I was truly horrified. I mean I'm a big fan of bad movies and bad horror movies especially. Because usually they are brainless fun and totally watchable. But this is the opposite, it's entirely unwatchable and done with absolutely zero acting talent with some of the worst directing ever and script is just insulting to any viewer with IQ above 80.

This movie is much like Manos: The Hands of Fate, 100% clueless and inconsistent, but at least Manos was done by total amateurs and wasn't annoying. As a huge fan of bad flicks I'd say that The Cook is amongst the 10 worst movies ever made - and it's really really bad, there's no secret pleasure in watching it, so I'd only recommend it to people who can tolerate extremely stupid and one-dimensional characters, horrendous script writing and actors with zero acting skill (annoying as well).

This movie makes someone like Uwe Boll look good.

red meat for dinner
ormessi13 July 2013
One sure thing you can say about "The Cook" is that the plot of this movie is innovative, it is not another movie about a group of teens who get lost in a distant road, it is something new and refreshing. This movie is far away from being a psychological horror with a deep script and a thrilling soundtrack, it is a funny and easy horror comedy. As i said before, it is not an high quality movie but "The Cook" is just make you laugh and smile and that is what we should expect from those kind of movies. The thing I liked the most in this movie is that it does not shows you only the scenes of the killings, the blood and the internal organs, (like a lot of other movies) it shows also the growing relationships between the characters especially between lance the geek boy and bunny the hot girl. In summary, if you are looking for a deep and qualitative horror so keep searching because it is not this movie, but if you are looking for a nice, funny and easy horror movie, so this is the one for you!

Yea...good bad horror Warning: Spoilers
There are a lot worse movies out there, but yes this is nothing more than a typical bad horror movie. It follows the formula very well, with sex, nudity and gore. The camera work was actually decent in this film, but the cinematography wasn't. The script and acting weren't _too_ bad all things considered. What I think was done well was the Cook himself - he was Hungarian and understood English but didn't let anyone know that and spoke to everyone in Hungarian telling them how he was about to kill them, while the sorority girls just found him charming. I enjoyed that. Then he would use the people he killed to make into dinner for the rest of the sorority girls - but the dinners were really disgusting all-meat dinners, yet no one bats an eye? And I mean, really disgusting looking rancid meat. However the actors in this movie were really REALLY annoying, and they did all deserve to die. The nice, sweet girl was annoying as hell, and the one guy in this movie - who the hell talks to their member like that? Wow was that stupid, embarrassingly stupid.

Spoiler (dont read if you care to not know the end): The one good thing is that everyone gets killed in the end. And you do enjoy these people being killed as they are so annoying your happy they're done away with.

You call it Frank?...
FlashCallahan29 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Over a long holiday weekend, unable to escape the confines of their sorority house, a handful of unsuspecting girls are left behind to enjoy the quiet sanctuary.

The normal house staff has taken off for the weekend, leaving the girls to fend for themselves.

Thankfully someone was kind enough to send them a temporary replacement chef to cook their meals.

However, when the girls start disappearing one-by-one, they begin to suspect something may not be quite right....

So all you need to know about is is the fact that there are a lot of pretty girls in this, who get drunk and stoned, and kiss one another a lot.

It's as if someone has made a really cheap movie with female friends, and getting them to kiss. It has a good set up and there is an idea there, but it's so poorly made and acted, you really are clock watching throughout the whole film.

The cook being unable to speak English, borderlines xenophobia, and there is one good scene explaining Friday 13th Part 4, while there is a killing going on. It's inventive and the highlight of an otherwise poor movie.

Plus this features the worst acted portrayal of a Policeman I have ever seen. He even says 'Cup of Joe'.

Not worth seeing.

Relatively entertaining
TdSmth516 December 2008
In a sorority some girls go on a vacation while others stay behind. We will follow those who stay at the sorority house. They're an entertaining bunch: an innocent fanatic Christian girl who is the object of lust of an aggressive girl, a medical student who does nothing but study, a slutty girl, a trio of friends made up of a dumb blonde and two foul-mouthed lesbians who spend most of the time high, an exercise fanatic who has a guy over to tutor her, but she doesn't want anything else with him.

Their new cook arrives, a Hungarian who can only say "OK" in English. He prepares them delicious meat dishes. But little by little the girls start disappearing. The cook doesn't appear as to them as a suspect because he's always covered in blood hacking meat. The pretty medical student sort of falls for the cook even though he tells her what he will to do her friends, in Hungarian, and she thinks it sounds sweet.

The dialogue is pretty funny and the girls are given good and distinct personalities. There's some gore, and a bit is gruesome. There are a couple of twists near the ending. Overall an OK lower budget horror movie saved by the fun girls and also the cook does a good job as a mad serial killer.

A Watchable Above Average Horror Comedy
druquzdog14 April 2008
I was a bit worried for the first fifteen minutes or so that The Cook wasn't going to deliver. Some of the dialogue at the start is a bit clunky and when I first saw the guy playing the cook I was concerned that he wasn't going to be able to pull it off.

As the movie progressed I was very happy to be proved wrong on all fronts and ended up having an awesome time watching this little horror comedy masterpiece. What can I say, I loved it and I'm looking forward to a sequel.

If you're hoping to be able to take much of the movie seriously then you're watching the wrong film. This is played strictly for laughs and tongue in cheek at more or less every step. A lot of the humour is very dark, but somehow handled with a light touch.

After the slightly shaky start, and once you accept the film for the cheesy fun-fest that it is you can enjoy it's off-the-wall handling and flavour. By the end I had come to think that the team that put it together had an inspired handling and quite a bit of originality going for them.

It's not a big budget film, and it's a little shaky at the start, but as a fan of low-budget horror, 80's horror and horror comedy I recommend this film to those of similar tastes.

Unfunny comedic elements drag this film down.
FrightMeter23 October 2008
Merging genres in a film is never an easy thing to do. The filmmaker runs the risk of losing his/her intended message or focus. This is never more true when we are taking about the horror and comedy genres. The two are so completely opposite of each other that it is nearly impossible to pull off a horror-comedy effectively. Sure, there are examples of getting right, but there are definitely more examples of getting it wrong. "The Cook" doesn't get it wrong, so to speak, but would have been a much better, more effective film had he director completely eliminated the comedic elements of the film.

We are introduced to a typical college sorority house. It is break time, and several of the girls decide to stick around the house and have their own little celebration. At the same time, a new cook arrives. Now, this is the first puzzling element of the film; the sorority house is no bigger than a typical two story house. It does not appear to be that fancy of a college campus, judging by the house and its surroundings, so why or how on earth do they have their own personal Hungarian cook??? Ahhh....tuition money well spent, I suppose. Also, where does he stay, since he always seems to be there? Would a sorority house really hire a male chef to stay with the girls alone over a break? Anyway, The Cook ends up being a homicidal maniac and begins to off the sorority sisters one by one and use them in his recipes. Yes, he serves the dead girls to their sorority sisters in various forms, including hamburgers and barbecue.

The Good: The film is at its best when it is working as a horror film. The Cook is a creepy killer and the death scenes pretty brutal and unrelenting. The killings are very reminiscent of the kills we saw in the early "Friday the 13th" sequels and the other more gory entries into the 80's slasher genre, which is probably on purpose, as one scene has two characters talking about a death scene in "Friday the 13th Part 4" as the film intercuts a female victim is being killed in the exact same manner by The Cook. The direction is pretty competent, particularly during the death scenes, and the acting a tad above average. The film did manage to keep my attention and didn't drag in any parts.

The Bad: The film is at its worse when it is working as a comedy. The characters are complete clichés and the screenwriter tries to use this alone to provide comic relief. There is badly written banter between some of the girls and a completely unnecessary subplot involving the resident "badass-lesbian" who seduces the innocent, bible-thumping religious girl. In fact, the screenwriter must have a thing for lesbianism, because there are several unnecessary scenes of girl-on-girl action, as if this a normal thing in sororities. Still, the comedic tones to the film (and they are present) really, at least for me, killed the pacing and effectiveness of the movie. Again, The Cook is such a brutal killer (except when the writer is apparently trying to have him be funny by blabbering and saying stupid stuff in Hungarian) that this could have really been a kick-ass slasher film. Instead, after any brutal kill, there are bad moments of comic relief. The dailogue is clunky, the characters complete clichés and underdeveloped. There is no final confrontation between killer and final girl and the ending is too predictable and unsatisfying.

Another horror-comedy that should have just been strictly horror. Take the comedic element out of this film and you actually have a pretty decent, gory, slasher film. However, as is, the comedic elements diminish the films tone and effectiveness and aren't even all the funny to begin with. Average at best, but had the potential to be much better.

Excellent "killing scenes" both technical and acting. Recommend.
doodlebug218 April 2008
I liked the fact that the killing scenes were quite realistic and not overdone. The attacker did a good job of playing warm/friendly, then breaking into his bad role, then the height of his anger. Even though everyone knows from the poster who the bad guy will be, the element of surprise was nevertheless still there as to the method and details. I thought the coeds for the most part pulled off their death roles rather well, considering that they are not accomplished actresses. The meals served at the dining table were convincing, as were the few meat prep scenes in the kitchen. What I liked most were the 2 heads, but thought they would have been more effective if shown a few more seconds. The bit of humor that was included was a nice extra.

Darn good job for low-budget flick
spider4118 April 2008
I suppose I expected a more original idea but much less professional acting. Most of the actors were better than I'm accustomed to seeing in low-budget flicks. The idea was not too creative, but the murders were well done. What I would have liked is more attention to the "forensic scene" -- which I thought had the weakest acting, incidentally. The scenes at the 2 final locations were unexpected and therefore superb. As for the settings, in my opinion they were much better than I had expected of a low budget indie. Set dressing equally good. Lighting was also superior for a budget as low as this one was said to be. Good closeups, 'though I thought they could have used a few more.

The Cook - sort of OK,,,
Selbert38019 June 2008
I appreciate independent films and people trying to make a movie happen and they put their heart and soul into it. This was probably the case here. The story is typical horror Girls being chased by bad guy. The lead was so so she just wasn't grabbing my attention, she should be cast for more for a hallmark film. The other girls were pretty good, the stupid one just had bad lines..Anyways the story, the sets, the gore, the cast, all pretty good The lead (the cook) was intriguing all in all ***The negative was that we never knew why he hated and wanted to kill I would of liked to have seen the cook as a boy being harassed by college girls or seeing his mom die from drunk girls ..you get the picture..Revenge horror flicks are always the best.

An Enjoyable Low Budget Film
brokensilent26 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
You have to watch this in the right mind set. If you're looking for a horror movie full of frights, unsettling scenes, terrified victims, and nightmares in the weeks to come after viewing.... well, this isn't it. However, if you're looking for a horror comedy that will have you giggling, watch this one. The cook was hilarious, going from all friendly to his passionate killing very smoothly and entertainingly so. The deaths weren't creative but they were certainly a tasty addition. My husband rented this for the "boobs" promised but while certainly creative (and unbelievable), they didn't live up to either of our hopes or expectations. This is a great horror comedy that is at the same moment, a soft core porn that seems as if it's trying to not be a soft core porn, meaning more a tease of a promise than the actual tease. I'm thinking this one may have to join our collection for when we're bored and want a good laugh.

Unlikeable characters but interestingly done
whensuncomesup19 April 2008
The Cook is pretty much what I expected for a low-budget movie – entertaining but not spectacular. Its appeal would be primarily to high school and college males and females. Technically, it was far better than a lot of low-budgets that I've watched. But what detracted from this movie, in my opinion, was casting the girls as relatively unlikeable – either virtual whores or lesbians. How can we be sympathetic with these girls being killed?? The special effects were better than average for a movie of this type, but suspense was mostly lacking after the first girl was slaughtered, cooked, and served. The only suspense was which one would be next and which one(s) would be spared. Oh, and whether the girls would turn on the cook and kill him instead. (Maybe there was more suspense than I thought!) Loved the Lance character....excellent acting without any special dialog! The Cook was also well played but as a director I would have toned down his facial antics just a little. Worth buying - worth watching a 2nd time using slow-mo to watch the killings and the closeups of the kitchen preparations!

A Hungarian Cook his hired by a bunch of sorority girls, and one by one he kills them and feeds them to each other.
tylerg3529 December 2009
In my opinion, this movie was actually quite humorous, but in a cheesy way. No part of this movie was actually scary, besides the fact that he is the creepiest cook ever. Dialogue wise, this movie was just filled with profanity and sexuality. The fact that they show the cook cutting up his victims into eating portions is just way over the top. The acting was not all that great either but from the cook it was alright, he gave the creepy sense of him, specially when he was chasing his victims. Overall this movie disappointed me , and i give it a 4/10. I would not recommend watching this movie with family, as it can get awkward, actually i don't recommend watching this movie at all.
