Just a Filler. Nothing Special

Fall Brawl 1995: War Games Thoughts

Fall Brawl 1995: War Games was the 3rd Annual Fall Brawl Event produced by WCW. It took place on September 17, 1995 from the Asheville Civic Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Attendence of 6,600, this would be the first WCW PPV of the Monday Night War era after the competitive ratings rivalry between WWF/E and WCW Kicked off 2 weeks earlier.

The Good - The opening was without a doubt the best match of the night. It was solid. 30 minute back and forth matches were not that often seen in the US Promotions around this time and the crowd really looked amazed from start to finish. Ric Flair vs. Arn Anderson was also really good. I like how personal it was from the storyline. Finish was a bit cheap but it didn't hurt it. Oh and a hilarious promo by Paul Orndorff. Pretty good work.

The Meh - The WCW TV Championship I found decent but it was hard watching The Renegade. Terrible wrestler with a clearly cheap knockoff gimmick.

The Bad - Main Event was a dud. Probably the worst War Games match in history. The storyline was stupid of Hogan just wanting 5 minutes with Kevin Sullivan. Also the heel side was awful as a whole. The Tag Team match went on way too long and it was very dragging. Harlem Heat was better than this to be booked into this. Worst match was obviously Cobra vs Pittman and it's nothing to discusse cause nothing really happened.

Overall - PPV really got only 2 weeks of buildup after the new era and there wasn't really anything special. Was more of a filler show due to more action going the next weeks prior to Nitro. Below-average show.

Score - 5 out of 10: Mediocre

0 = Horrible: 1 = Bad/Lackluster: 2 = Decent: 3 = Good: 4 = Awesome: 5 = One of the Best of all Time:

1. Flyin Brian vs. Johnny B. Badd - 4.5/5

2. Cobra vs. Sgt. Craig Pittman - 0/5

3. Diamond Dallas Page vs. The Renegade: WCW World Television Championship - 2.5/5

4. Harlem Heat vs. Buckhouse Buck & Dirty Dick Slater: WCW World Tag Team Championship - 1.5/5

5. Ric Flair vs. Arn Anderson - 3.5/5

6. The Hulkamainiacs vs. The Dungeon of Doom (War Games Match) - 1/5

Best Match - Flyin Brian vs. Johnny B. Badd

Worst Match - Cobra vs. Sgt. Craig Pittman

Most Memorable Moment - Nothing really outstanding

Top 5 Performers -

1. Flyin Brian - Amazing match

2. Johnny B. Badd - Amazing Match

3. Ric Flair - Good Performance

4. Arn Anderson - Good Performance

5. DDP - Made someone look good.

Weak but not the worst

Warning: Spoilers
1. Flyin' Brian Pillman Vs Johnny B. Badd - I never understand why is there time limit. Time limit expired and match continues because "we must have a winner". Useless time limit. After all match was good. Badd won U.S. Title match against Sting. 8.5/10

2. Sgt. Craig Pittman Vs. Cobra - 2 minute something awful. Waste of time. 3/10

3. WCW World Television Title Match: Champ-The Renegade Vs. Diamond Dallas Page - Finally somebody took the Championship from that weirdo Renegade. Match was watchable but not outstanding. 6.5/10

4. For the WCW World Heavyweight Tag Team Championship: Harlem Heat Vs. Champs-Bunkhouse Buck/Dick Slater - Average match with Sherri's hot kiss in the end :) 6/10

5. Arn Anderson Vs. Ric Flair - Long match, but not so special and with Anderson's victory over Flair. Hmm. 6/10 Next we see ridiculous sketch by Sullivan.

6. Wargames: Sting/Hogan/Savage/Luger Vs. Meng/Zodiac/Kamala/Shark - Stipulation: if Hogan's team win, he'll get 5 minutes with Sullivan. Guess who won in bad match? 5.5/10

It's lucky that it had two memorable matches!

Warning: Spoilers
Live from Asheville, NC

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone & Bobby Heenan

#1 Contender's Match (For the United States Championship)

"Flyin" Brian Pillman Vs Johnny B Badd

They originally wrestle to a twenty-minute draw, but it's determined that the match must continue in sudden death. Badd wins in sudden death when he collides with Pillman coming off the ropes and simply falls on top of him. This was SO close to being an amazing match. They went 30 full minutes of working their asses off. Maybe I'm being too picky, but I felt there were far too many rest holds in the first 15 minutes. It became repetitive and slightly dull. The rest of the match is fantastic, edge of your seat wrestling that doesn't let up for a second. It's a really good match that could have been great. Badd gets a shot at Sting for the United States Title.

***3/4

Cobra Vs Sgt. Craig Pittman

Cobra is Jeff Farmer, more infamously known as NWO Sting. Pittman wins by submission with a cross-arm breaker. This was thankfully short, but awful just the same. I don't have much else to say about it.

DUD

We get a REALLY awful segment with Paul Orndorff going berserk in his locker room, questioning if he's Mr. Wonderful or not. A psychic comes in and says things will fall into place for Orndorff.

Television Title

The Renegade (C) (W/The Ultimate Warrior) Vs Diamond Dallas Paige (W/Max Muscle & The Diamond Doll)

DDP wins the title with the Diamond Cutter. The Renegade is a rip- off of The Ultimate Warrior. The fans knew it and didn't accept him very much. Both were relatively green at this juncture, but this was better than I expected. At one point, The Renegade had the match won, then he inexplicably goes after Max Muscle. Stupid booking aside, this was tolerable.

*1/2

Tag Team Championship

"Dirty" Dick Slater & Bunkhouse Buck (C) (W/Col. Rob Parker) Vs Harlem Heat (W/Sister Sherri)

Harlem Heat wins the Tag Team titles after The Nasty Boys cost Slater & Bunkhouse the match. This was a chore to sit through. What's hysterical is that Schiavone called it "Great Tag Team wrestling" Unless you're a masochist, sit this one out. The only notable thing about this match is the make out session between Sherri and Parker.

1/4*

Ric Flair Vs Arn Anderson

Anderson wins with the DDT after interference from Brian Pillman. This is PURE wrestling at its finest. It'll probably bore casual fans to tears, but for the wrestling purist, this is a wet dream. It starts off slow at the beginning, then it begins to crescendo. Not only is this filled with great psychology, but emotion as well. Because of Ric and Arn's friendship, you're emotionally invested. Bobby Heenan did a great job of announcing here and selling the emotion between Ric and Arn. Brian Pillman turns heel and rejuvenated his career somewhat and the fans went from supporting Arn to being confused after Arn betrayed Ric. It was quite simply, a wrestling clinic.

****1/4

War Games

The Dungeon of Doom (The Shark, Kamala, Meng & The Zodiac W/The Taskmaster) Vs Hulk Hogan, Sting, Randy Savage & Lex Luger

If Hogan wins, he gets 5 minutes with The Taskmaster. Hogan's team wins after making The Zodiac submit with a reverse chinlock. Yes, I said a pathetic reverse chinlock. This was the worst War Games match in history. It's so mind-numbingly bad, it's hard to describe. Where do I begin with my complaints? There is no excitement what so ever unless you love nothing but punching and kicking. Kevin Sullivan (The Taskmaster) Is so cartoonish that it's hard to take the Dungeon of Doom seriously. Our lovable hero, Hulk Hogan acts like a complete heel and throws salt in the heels eyes, along with other heel tactics. There is one unintentionally hilarious moment where The Shark (Earthquake) tries to do a suicide dive over the ropes and the two rings and gets caught in the ropes because he's too fat to cross them. I wish you were allowed to post pictures in your reviews.

DUD

After the match, Hogan obliterates The Taskmaster for a bit until The Giant comes down and wrenches Hogan's neck.

Final Thoughts

This would be one of the worst PPV's of all time if it wasn't for Ric Flair Vs Arn Anderson and Johnny B Badd Vs Brian Pillman. From 94 to 95, WCW was unwatchable at times. 95 was a bad year in general for wrestling. Hogan's feud with The Dungeon of Doom was far from finished and continued to stink up the joint for a few more months. Savage and Luger would start a feud after the miscommunication in the main- event. Flair would turn face for a little bit to feud with Arn. Two matches with *** and **** plus is nothing to sneeze at, but the rest of the PPV should be avoided like the plague

2 noteworthy matches
theanomaloushost15 October 2021
I started getting into retro professional wrestling again, with my initial run back in the day being from around late 2002-2008 (Ruthless Aggression Era). Decided to start around the time when WCW Nitro premiered. Over 20 years late to the party, as I missed the famous wrestling wars from 1997-2001 between WCW and WWF. Figured a good time to start is when Nitro premiered, and go from there. I tried getting into modern wrestling (2021), from WWE, to AEW, to the occasional Japanese show, and I just can't do it. The stars aren't as distinct and memorable, the wrestling style is too fancy for its own good (overly complicated maneuvers and ridiculous spots, plus moves that should lay a guy out being practically shrugged off; it's more mock-fighting than it is wrestling, and I'd rather watch MMA than this), and the art of pacing a match and telling an in-ring story isn't what it used to be.

So I figured I'd be better off going into the past, to September 1995. Sure enough, it was a breath of fresh air seeing matches done better. Granted, it could be that I'm just used to seeing things paced this way. But given that I even find 80s wrestling more investing than modern day wrestling (didn't grow up with any of that, that was past my time), I'd say this was doing something right.

So, how does the first WCW PPV from this Nitro time period hold up for a first-time watcher? Well, given that the majority of the matches disappointed me, I guess my nostalgia for better times isn't blinding me, so...

1.) "Flying" Brian Pillman vs. Johnny R. Badd

Wow. What a way to open the show. In fact, I'd say this is the match of the night. On the first Nitro episode, Pillman showcased his potential in a match against Justin Liger, which was good once they got over the few botches during the first half of the match. For this one, Brian and Johnny showcased that both are capable of the big time. They put on a wrestling clinic, exchanging holds and high flying moves. The first 10 minutes is deliberately slow-paced, with some feeling each other out, show-boating, and long submission holds somewhat akin to Bret vs. HBK at WMXII. But then the match picks up speed, and continues to do so until someone is finally pinned. Those guys must've been exhausted, because I'm amazed at how long they went at the pace they kept at. Only one may have won the match, but both men were winners in my eyes.

Some say the match went a little too long, and I can sympathize with that position. But not knowing when it was going to end kept a solid tension to the match. Plus, if that famous cage match between Bret Hart and Own Hart isn't considered too long and monotonous, then I say that's more-so the case for this battle. Plus it told a nice story on how desperate both men were to win, that neither wanted to give up, and both throwing the kitchen sink at each other with their repertoire of moves and counters. That "20 minute time limit" I felt only added to the tension, and was so relieved when they were allowed to continue.

2.) Cobra vs. Craig Pittman

One of those < 2 minute squash matches that doesn't even qualify as a wrestling match.

3.) DDP vs. The Renegade

The Renegade is obviously an Ultimate Warrior rip-off. Which I find amusing, given that the Ultimate Warrior would eventually come to WCW. Anyway, it's a decent albeit unremarkable match. The cheap finish knocks it down half a point.

Rated: 2.5 / 5

**********************************************************************

4.) Harlem Heat vs. Buck and Slater Tag Team Match

This match would've been decent if there weren't so many botches. Clear amateur hour here, especially on the parts of Buck and Slater who don't look like they are skilled (or fit) enough for a PPV event. But hey, at least there was that moment with the Colonel kissing Sherri.

Rated: 2 / 5

**********************************************************************

5.) Ric Flair vs. Arn Anderson

Some will love this match because it's old-school golden age style wrestling. It had a decent (albeit complicated) promo backstory leading into the match, and there was plenty of in-ring psychology showcasing the prime art of in-ring storytelling. The biggest aspect of professional wrestling (that I argue is a bit of a lost art these days). The slow pace is to allow for the range of emotions to flair up (couldn't resist).

However, while I can appreciate it for that, this never picked up enough to be entirely satisfying. Plus the interference at the end (which affected the finish) brings this down a peg. Still, it's the only other good match on this PPV.

Rated: 3.5 / 5

6.) War Games

This is a prime example of a clusterf^*$ match. Nothing is organized, there isn't any real ebb or flow. It's just throwing the wrestlers in there, letting them do what they want, and hope something good will come out of it. It's completely dull and uninteresting, with nothing really done utilizing the cage. It's only when Hulk Hogan came in last and started throwing powder at their faces that any life was breathed into this thing. Plus that post-match stuff building up The Giant (Big Show) to be menacing.

Rated: 1.5 / 5

**************************************************************************** ****************************************************************************

This PPV isn't good. You're better off with some biography or "best of" video that contains the only 2 good matches that were in this event. The Brian Pillman Loose Cannon DVD has that match with him and Badd, and the Four Horsemen DVD has the match between Flair and Anderson. You're better off picking both of those up than watching this.
