Violent Night hit theaters in December of 2022. It was a surprise hit, grossing a solid $50 million domestically, and another $26 million overseas, on a thrifty $20 million budget. The premise was a “can’t miss” proposition, being about a group of mercenaries that takes a rich family hostage, while Santa Claus (David Harbour) tries to save the day (and believe in Christmas again).Yet, many folks might have missed the movie last year, as by the time it hit Peacock and Blu-ray/DVD, it was January, at which point no one really wants to watch a Christmas movie anymore. With the yuletide season upon us, now’s the perfect time to revisit this holiday action flick.
Now, whenever someone asks me what my favorite Christmas movie is, I have only one answer. Die Hard. The Bruce Willis film has long been at the center of heated debate on it being classified as a holiday film.

Over the weekend, Dave Shelton — an award winning writer, cartoonist, and voice actor, with a varied resume that includes Everybody Loves Raymond, National Lampoon, Tweety And Sylvester and Against Type — and Tami Zorge hosted the world premiere of his pilot Professor Creepy’S Scream Party at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood.
The “Garage TV” pilot, which was shot in only one day and edited in one more, is a live action variety show that is billed as a retro mash up of sixties kids shows, horror hosts, and dance shows. Picture the Hilarious House Of Frankenstein meets Vampira meets American Bandstand, with a Vincent Price-esque mad scientist as host. How does that not pique one’s interest?
The event is a testament to how hard work can pay off. The pilot process was described to me as a Living In Oblivion-esque experience, with financiers backing out, the lead actor...

The sequel to the 1959 "classic" Attack of the Killer Shrews is well on its way, and whether you like it or not, we have a new trailer and one-sheet for you to check out. No, this is Not an April Fool's joke. Steve Latshaw’s Return of the Killer Shrews is serious business.
Steve Latshaw’s low budget tongue-in-cheek sequel to an even lower budget 1959 bad movie classic has wrangled a few name actors, including “Dukes of Hazzard” star John Schneider, Transylmania beauty Jennifer Lyons, all-purpose character actor Bruce Davison, and original Killer Shrews star James Best, who is probably best remembered for his turn as the Wile E. Coyote-ish Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane on the “Dukes of Hazzard.”

Now here’s something I never thought I’d be writing about in 2011… It seems director Steve Latshaw has put together a sequel to the low budget 1959 B-movie “classic Killer Shrews, and he’s managed to get a few named actors in the cast! Return of the Killer Shrews stars original Killer Shrews actor James Best, who is best known as Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane in Dukes of Hazzard, alongside his Hazzard co-star John Schneider, Transylmania’s Jennifer Lyons and Bruce Davison. Check out the trailer after the synopsis:
A TV reality show hires Captain Thorne Sherman (James Best) and his boat to cargo supplies to the deserted offshore island they’re using as a filming location. Thorne would have refused the job because he’s been to that island before and still sees it in his nightmares. Unfortunately, as the boat departs, Thorne is too hungover to realize where they’re going,...

The one sure thing about Steve Latshaw’s Return of the Killer Shrews is that it has to be a better movie than the original 1959 snoozer. God help us if it’s not. But it has to be because the original didn’t have John Schneider, Bruce Davison, or bikini babes. Am I right?
The Killer Shrews seems an unlikely film to warrant a sequel, especially half a century later, but stranger things have happened. Steve Latshaw’s low budget tongue-in-cheek sequel to an even lower budget 1959 bad movie classic has even wrangled a few name actors, including “Dukes of Hazzard” star John Schneider, Transylmania beauty Jennifer Lyons, all-purpose character actor Bruce Davison, and original Killer Shrews star James Best, who is probably best remembered for his turn as the Wile E. If you are reading this right now, then chances are you did not see the vampire comedy Transylmania when it opened on 1,000 screens this past December to the fourth lowest wide release opening weekend per theater average of all time. And you are better off that way.
Ostensibly Transylmania (review here) is the third installment in the Dorm Daze DVD franchise. Directors David and Scott Hillenbrand apparently got it in their heads that they could ride the Twilight bandwagon with their alleged comedy about college dimwits spending a semester at a Transylvanian university that used to be a vampire’s castle, rebranded Dorm Daze 3 as Transylmania, and somehow organized a 1,000-theater release whereby it grossed a whopping $397,641 (according to Box Office Mojo). $5.50 of that came out of my pocket -- time and money I will never get back.
But if you are a glutton for punishment, DVDActive has word on...

2009. It was pretty much as crappy a year for horror movies as it was for the economy. There were, however, some really high points to help balance out all the drivel that was put out there in theatres as well as on home video, and they are to be celebrated, even though technically a couple of them are not even from this year.

Audience apathy drove a stake through the heart of vampire spoof Transylmania at the weekend when it became a spectacular, record-breaking box office flop.
The R-rated, low-budget indie horror comedy - about a group of college kids on a semester at Razvan University in Romania - had the worst American opening in history for a movie playing at more than 1,000 venues.
It earned an abysmal $263, 941, taking the record of shame for worst debut ever from 1991's Rich Girl. On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 0 per cent. Yes, that's a zero.
It also had the third worst movie opening in more than 600 cinemas, behind New Market's 2005 recut of The Passion of the Christ and 2008 indie drama Proud American.
The 92-minute spoof, which premiered at the American Film Market in November 2008 and later screened at the European Film Market in February 2009, was directed by brothers David and...

Recently Dread Central scribe Heather Wixson caught up with actor Patrick Cavanaugh to get the scoop on Transylmania and to maybe nibble a bit on the other white meat.
Heather Wixson: What can you tell us about your character, Pete?
Patrick Cavanaugh: Well, I consider Pete a lovable loser. He is a typical college dude who would rather drink and get high than go to class. He loves to hang out with his buddy Wang and basically see how much trouble they can get into.
Hw: What was it like working on the set of Transylmania? The trailers look hilarious so I was wondering if you had just as much fun making the movie as it looks like it was to shoot?
PC: We had an absolute Blast making this movie. I mean, first of all, we got to spend seven weeks in a far off land, making a...

It was a dark and stormy night. The phone rang and it was actor Patrick Cavanaugh. After our short chat, I knew something was weird. The lights kept flickering, there was a group of bats fluttering outside my window and he spoke in this strange Romanian accent. I plugged my recorder into my laptop, played back the interview and was aghast to find Patrick.s voice completely replace by this horrendous tone. Vampires can.t be seen in photographs, so the same must be true with voice recordings. Patrick Cavanaugh is a vampire! Okay, he.s not a vampire. My recorder just broke. Thankfully we got to chat a second time and I got to hear all about what it was like poking fun at the vampire craze and the monster movie genre in Transylmania. Patrick is no novice to the film industry, but Transylmania does mark a very monumental...

Technically, “Transylmania” isn’t a spoof film like “Date Movie,” “Meet the Spartans” and the like. But that hasn’t stopped the teens-in-vampireland comedy from cutting together a clever “New Moon”-inspired movie trailer . What's more, stars Jennifer Lyons and Oren Skoog insist that the film’s mix of love, supernatural scares and comedy will appeal to Twilighters.
“I was just looking at all the characters and thinking about that,” explained Lyons, who plays a demonically-possessed co-ed named Lynne in the flick that opens this weekend. “And I realized that almost every character in this movie is looking for love in every ridiculous, goofy way you can imagine. There’s a lot of forbidden love - we even have love between a head and a person; wait, that didn’t sound good.”
Yep, one subplot does indeed involve a severed female head still alive enough to get angry at her boyfriend for cheating on her.

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.
First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.
Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

This week at the movies, we've got a fractured family (Everybody's Fine, starring Robert De Niro and Drew Barrymore); a sibling rivalry (Brothers, starring Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal); an inside job (Armored, starring Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne); and vampire hilarity (Transylmania, starring Patrick Cavanaugh and James DeBello). What do the critics have to say? Sometimes a film contains such good acting that one is willing to overlook its other faults. One example might be Jim Sheridan's Brothers, a film critics say often works despite being frequently overwrought. Robert De Niro has an intensity and presence that shines through...

We brought you an earlier look at a trailer for Full Circle Releasing’s upcoming horror/comedy Transylmania which while funny, wasn’t able to show you everything you might want to see about this movie. Fortunately, we can remedy that problem right now by bringing you this new Redband trailer for the film which is able to show a lot more of the “flavor” you can expect.
In case this is your first experience with Transylmania, it tells the story of a motley group of college students who embark on “the wildest, sexiest, most outrageous semester abroad ever” at Razvan University. Of course, in true horror/comedy style, the campus isn’t located in a plush, beautiful paradise but instead, deep in the heart of Transylvania in a centuries-old castle.
Once the students arrive, all hell breaks loose and they are forced to deal with all manner of strange things like black leather-clad professors,...

With tongue firmly planted in cheek, Transylmania is poised to hit theaters on December 4 from Full Circle Releasing. A teaser one-sheet, which looks like an Abercrombie & Fitch ad, has premiered today echoing, I think, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer poster, in some respects. Directed by David Hillenbrand and Scott Hillenbrand, the film follows a motley group of college students who embark on a semester at Razvan University. Located deep in the heart of the "cursed land" of Transylvania in a centuries-old castle, Razvan isn't your typical institution of higher learning . and the black leather-clad professors, three-foot-tall dean, instruction in crucifix-wielding, and topless vampiresses lurking in dark corners are just the start. The serious brutality of the torture trend gives way to a more lighthearted type of bloodshed with Transylmania, a grisly horror/comedy going into limited release December 4 from Full Circle Releasing. Writing/directing brothers David and Scott Hillenbrand, whose credits include King Cobra and PIÑATA: Survival Island, discussed the flick with us and passed on a couple of photos, including an exclusive gruesome pic (see them below).
In the film, a group of students set off to study abroad at the isolated Razvan University, located in a centuries-old Transylvanian castle. What they find are black leather-clad professors, a 3-foot-tall dean, instructions in crucifix-wielding and topless vampiresses lurking in dark corners—basically the standard European experience.
“We thought it would be very interesting to mix the college comedy of Animal House with the vampire/monster-hunting genre,” the Hillenbrands tell Fango, “and spoof scenarios and characters like Professor Van Helsing, Selene in Underworld,...

When Leslie Nielsen appeared at the Toronto Fan Expo this past weekend, it wasn't based on recognition for his popular role as Frank Drebin from Police Squad. Rather, it was to promote his latest spoof film, Stan Helsing, directed by Bo Zenga, producer of the original Scary Movie. Haven't heard of it? Well, that could be because it is going direct to DVD on October 27th. At the same time, a trailer has arrived online this week for another terrible looking horror parody called Transylmania. Directed by Scott and David Hillenbrand (National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze), this is just basically another college frat comedy transplanted to vampire country (Romania). Stan Helsing may have the "star power" of Leslie Nielsen and Kenan Thompson, but Transylmania is the one that is apparently getting a theatrical release on December 4th. Go figure. Compare the trailers for both flicks after the jump and help...

Even before the Twilight revolution, vampires were in. Before pink was the new black, vampire movies were making their way into the mainstream with a vengeance. And now, with franchises like the aforementioned teen broodfest Twilight and the low-down and dirty HBO series True Blood, it seems that we just can't escape the fangs of a vampire-crazy culture. Which makes the whole thing ripe for spoofing. Enter brothers David and Scott Hillenbrand, the writer/director team behind such gems as King Cobra, National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze and the ever-popular Dorm Daze 2. They are taking the vampire fad to task in their new movie, Transylmania, a spoof that appears to be one part Twilight, one part wannabe Monster Squad (I stress the word wannabe) and one part ever other National Lampoons Presents movie of the past 5 years. Except, based on the trailer below, this movie looks downright awful. Not awful in the Friedberg/Seltzer sense, but...

Horror comedies. They either hit the mark or they suck. Some, however, suck on purpose. The latter looks to be the case when talking about David and Scott Hillenbrand's vampire comedy Transylmania, which saw its online trailer debut today.

Granted, “Transylmania”, what with its Euro-trash vampires, skanky looking Brides of Dracula, and leather-clad Musetta Vander sure are temping, but I’m reminded that it is directed by David Hillenbrand and Scott Hillenbrand, the same guys behind the Godawful “Survival Island”. Hey, maybe they’ve improved since then. One can only hope. Here’s the trailer for their latest, the comedy horror spoof “Transylmania”. I know I’m at Los Angeles’ American Film Market when, as soon as I get off the plane, I run into Lloyd Kaufman (in a men’s room, no less). The Troma chief serves as the Chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, which runs the Afm. Who better to chair an organization and market dedicated to discovering and promoting movies created outside the studio system than Kaufman?
This November, the Afm unveils over 500 films in dozens of languages for prospective international buyers. They screen the majority of these new motion pictures at seven different screening venues in sunny Santa Monica. The Afm is the proud home for the smaller guys, foreign and art-house features and B- to Z-grade movies. Just about everything stars Michael Madsen, C. Thomas Howell and/or Billy Zane. Best of all, the number of genre films has increased substantially over the 11 years I’ve been coming here,...
