Not something I would watch again
bobby_jo121 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest, I thought this movie was pretty terrible. It was slow and the acting was terrible... especially from Sappho, played by Avalon Barrie. It seemed too forced, and was simply obnoxious.

I guess if you want to see boobs and people, especially girls, in general getting it on, then this movie is for you. But even then, I wouldn't really recommend it, I'm sure there are other, better ways to see those things.

Allow me to summarize: So a couple on their honeymoon, a painter and a "free spirit" meet a young lonely Russian. The wife is drawn into a lesbian relationship with the Russian and encourages her husband to also love the woman. Then jealousy erupts and the husband and Russian seem to be in love, and the wife doesn't love the husband, but does love the Russian, who doesn't love her back, even though she corrupted her into being a lesbian in the first place. Concluded with a horrible ending, by any means, disrespectful and in general just inappropriate.

On the upside the view is beautiful throughout the film.

a badly acted adaptation of a book that isn't credited
xoe_case9 May 2011
I'm disappointed that the page for the movie gives no credit to the book Garden of Eden by Hemingway. The movie is very heavily based on the storyline of that book, taking whole passages and conversations almost verbatim. It is not one of his more famous novels, but it still seems unlikely that even a foreign release could get away with not crediting such an influential author.

The movie itself is visually appealing and the production quality is pretty good. The acting is terrible though. Stiff and uninspired. I wouldn't have finished watching it had I not wanted to see if it ended the same way as the book. I do not recommend this movie overall.

Perhaps we should decide for ourselves.

Warning: Spoilers
Not the best, but certainly not the worst movie dealing with lesbianism that I've ever seen. The acting was pretty poor, especially in the beginning and it was wrought with clichés (especially the awful crazy/dead lesbian one). But, it did have it's moments. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the soft colors. Sappho, played by Avalon Barrie, starts off as a very irritating character, but as you get further into the film, you start to realize that she's like that because she's always repressed who she really was and even when she's trying to break free of her old self, no one will take her seriously. I admit that the end of the film where she is rejected by Helena made me feel really bad for her. The ideas in this story are good, I just felt as if they weren't executed well enough.

sappho? no

I couldn't watch this movie without cringing at the lead girl. She really was hard to watch. I felt like it was like playing dress up for her.

This was apparently 1926 and I couldn't tell how old she was or what. She walked like Paris Hilton, Not Greta Garbo. She didn't seem to know anything about how an upperclass girl acted in 26. Also, did she have an accent? did she not? I really hope I don't see any more of this idiot.

The lead actor though wasn't too bad. I felt like he really carried the movie for me.

It was an OK movie over all. I won't watch it again. I can't bear the audacious acting.

The End Destroyed It !
ProducersGuide27 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I know it is fictitious story and not a real one. But, come on! At least be realistic! Now, she has decided to suicide after she just met a person who is clearly trying to take her husband in a very very clear way the whole time of the movie? Also, the husband acting like he doesn't know what's happening and that it is not OK!!!

Sorry but, all of that is not believable to be possible.

At least, if that Russian girl at the end just said that she did not expect that she would do it, it would make it a bit more realistic.

THIS IS EXCTLY WHY I SAY IT IS THE FICTITIOUS AND EXTREMELY BAD WRITING, ESPECIALLY, THE UNREALISTIC ENDING !!!

Three stars and I chose 3 only for some Music covers and the beautiful filming place and the prestigious performance of the lead actress ..

Other than these .. I see only failure .. Really.

Terrible.
RanArashi33410 June 2008
Horrible film. I would not recommend this to anyone. While a film is being developed its creators should be asking themselves "So what? Who cares?" and they should be able to answer that question in regards to their movie. At the end of this I felt myself asking "So what? Who cares?" Which is incredibly bad.

This film suffers from terrible acting, directing and writing, and its seemingly only redeeming qualities are it locations and occasionally good cinematography.

Honestly, do not bother with this film. It's a glorified soft core porn, and the porn isn't even very good.

One of the supidest movies ever made
chicagopoetry4 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is a pretty cheesy soft-core flick about a love triangle between two girls and a guy. Other than that, it is completely implausible, ridiculous, uninteresting, and unimportant. What is the moral of the story, if you can call it a story? Lesbians are only lesbians when their men are away. What the . . . I wonder how many lesbians would agree with that. Any other guy in his right mind would divorce this sick woman in no time flat when she started acting like an insensitive freak; sorry to say most guys would probably just slap the heck out of her and be done with it, jail or no jail, and that probably would have prevented a suicide at least. Why did she marry this poor sap if she only cared about herself? It doesn't matter that she's having an affair with a woman, she just as well could be having an affair with a guy, what difference does it make. Hey guys, do you want your wife cheating on you on your honeymoon? ICK. I know some people get into that whole swinger thing, but that's just it, it's a choice. Doesn't seem like hubby has much of a choice here. He really doesn't want to get involved with the creepy Russian dingbat who is seducing his wife, but he plays along with it helplessly in order to try to save his marriage, then the freak offs herself, and he runs away with the Russian chick? This is worse than a soap opera. There are some beautifully shot scenes of Greek islands, granted, but this movie isn't all that. Do Greek islands turn people into a-holes? Doubt it. This movie is cheesy and dumb and boring and predictable and badly acted and the plot goes nowhere and the dubbing is annoying. The only thing interesting in this movie is that the lead looks, acts and talks just like a young Cameron Diaz, so it's kind of hot watching this Cameron look alike doing all graphic lesbian sex scenes. But... Since when do rocks not hurt the human body? There would be a lot of bruises after so many romps in the rocks. When this screwy rich girl acting like trailer trash starts reciting poetry we have to wonder who wrote this garbage. The animosity she shows toward her husband isn't nearly as boggling as why he puts up with it. And the ending, the ending . . .aaaaaaahhhhh!!!! WHAT A STUPID MOVIE.

Sigh; nothing you've not seen before.
bozo2bozo225 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Yet another lesbian drama (set, of course, on the Isle of Lesbos) where the "transgression" of lesbianism is punished by the death of at least one of them. The relative tedium of the movie is offset by the lovely scenery (oh, and the island's pretty, too), along with the amusingly bad acting of, well, pretty much everyone. So, to sum up: lovely women getting naked (good!); plot, acting, script, direction: bad! (Unfortunately, though, not bad enough to give it cult status.) I'd say that if you were stuck on a desert (Greek) island with just one movie, and it were "Sappho" ... oh, you poor thing. On the other hand, it might help you pass those long, lonely nights (just fast forward.)

A less well-acted version of "Ernest Hemingway's Garden of Eden"
lina-beana17 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This is almost the exact storyline of Ernest Hemingway's The Garden of Eden. The acting in the movie Ernest Hemingway's Garden of Eden (2008) was better, though there were more girl/girl scenes in this one.

I thought this was the better story, but the acting was strange. The lead actor in"Sappho" was easily the best. If the rest of the cast had been taken from Garden of Eden and put into this movie perhaps it would get 4 or 5 stars.

Like I said, the story could have been good, but the acting was mediocre and unlike Sappho and Phil, the chemistry between Helene and Phil was non-existent.

This is more of a movie you would watch just to look at all the beauty in it. The actors, Avalon Barrie, the guy who played Phil, and the scenery--the island and all the cinematography.

Not really a fan of the crazy lesbian commits suicide in a jealous rage story. It's a bit overused, but at least some other movies act it out better.

If you're going to watch this movie, you must also watch "Ernest Hemingway's Garden of Eden" to laugh at the parallels and even verbatim quotes.

Newlywed couple goes on honeymoon, tests the boundaries of their relationship.
kyliebites20 July 2015
the acting in this film is wooden and not dynamic at all. The lead actress' characterisation of a 1920s was only made apparent because she actually said the year out loud. She saunters around with a swagger that is more modern than anything, and her voice fell into a predictable vocal pattern that when coupled with her obnoxious behaviour, soon becomes incredibly annoying.

The script itself was poorly written; many of the lines between the two female leads were painfully forced and when delivered, gave the impression that the writer had no clue about how women talk(in general or to each other). My favourite moment has got to be when they were looking at the 'Easter eggs' and Helen's father gleefully exclaims ''and that was how Aphrodite made the lesbians!'

The film in general lacked subtlety, making it hard to watch without some eye-rolling at the inevitable clichés and cheesiness. Even the intimate scenes sometimes felt cheap, with the exaggerated acting on the lead's part.

A strange lyrical film...
crombiefilms12 June 2008
A strange lyrical film, much like the ancient poetess's Sappho's own poetry. It has no violence, no car chases, no gunfights, and yet it manages to be enthralling and unpredictable.

I won't tell the story, except that it's about a boy and a girl who wants to be a boy and a girl, and it all gets complicated.

Here in Ukraine it was a big commercial success - the biggest in the history of our film industry - and also there was a very big reaction against this movie from the church and anti-gays. It seems there are two reactions to this film, either you love it, or you hate it. You can see that from the reactions here too.

The acting lets the movie down a little bit, but only a little.

Better to watch the first version!! Summer Lovers!!
noskcirenoj3 October 2018
I picked this movie up at a flea market. It reminded me of Summer Lovers with Daryl Hannah and Peter Gallagher in 1982. Many other reviewers said the acting and dialog were wooden and other than the scenery and music, and some good erotic scenes, you should give the movie a pass. I have always loved Summer Lovers (1982) with MUCH better dialog, acting and story, but I wish I could merge the two. Always thought the 1982 version was the perfect erotic movie that just stopped short. The 2008 is the extra but left behind all the class and quality that made the original a good movie.

started out intresting ended bad
magicmusicmuse29 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the movie started out as a movie that looked like it was going to go someplace. but the character of Helen didn't make since she had never been sexual with a man because no man was interested in her so she was a "lesbian" only ever being intimate with women. She made the first move on Sappho and got her to fall in both love and lust with her then said she didn't want to be with her after she(Helen) slept with Sappho's husband. This rejection causes Sapho to end up dead in the end.

Horrendous
mcjensen-059244 May 2021
After 50 plus years I've finally found the worst movie ever made. Atrocious acting all around. Ridiculous plot. Not even the beautiful scenery and sex scenes can salvage this disaster. And it's so long! Or just seemed long. Completely devoid of any meaning or message. I actually was laughing at how tremendously awful this was. If you wanna watch it go for it. It's your life. But I can't recommend this at all.

An interesting journey into the realm of intimacy
kkkkoooollll19 May 2008
An American couple goes to Greece for their honeymoon, and soon after befriends a smart and beautiful Russian girl, who feels lonely on the island while her father does important archaeological work. You can probably guess where the movie plot is going, but yet it is full of surprises and unexpected psychological twists and turns. Without giving any spoilers away, I would say that the plot would keep you on the edge of your seat up until the very last scene (which I found shocking and somewhat regrettable). I especially liked the dialogs, full of eloquent allusions - they were quite thoughtful and sophisticated. And last, but not least - you get to see beautiful panoramic views of mesmerizing nature, sea, and shores as well as detailed scenes of town's life with its own cultural treasures and unique customs. And lots of tits and ass as well :)

Great chick flick
gingertom0073 July 2008
My girlfriend more or less dragged me to this movie in St. Petersburg, Russia. I was determined to hate it, and I ended up liking it. She'd give it 10 stars, I know, but since this is really a chick flick for girls who are still asking "who am I?", and I'm a guy who already knows who he is, I'll give it eight stars. For the visuals and the music I'd give it ten stars, and the script contains some great lines too, and the actors are all good-looking eye candy - it's just a pity that sometimes it feels that some emotion wasn't felt, just imitated.

All in all, the movie's like a holiday from reality - beautiful landscapes, wonderful costumes, and 2 actresses who look as good with nothing on as with something on, superb music, and a strange story that drags you in and puts you in a trance. It was a real ugly shock to come out of the cinema back to a gray and rainy city again.

Crimea never looked so good
joraromanov4 July 2008
Sappho really is like a modern Greek tragedy - it's set on a Greek island, and it uses all the conventions of that ancient form of drama - it all happens in one place, in one month, with only one line of action, and the characters are carried forward by fate towards an end that they can't avoid.

And it works! It seems new and fresh and interesting in this age when all movies look the same. It's a real tearjerker.

For movie buffs who wonder where the movie was made, it was made in Crimea on the Black Sea. The main location is the Vorontsov Palace. Lots of movies have been made in Crimea, but this is perhaps the most beautiful of them all - the locations and the photography are superb!!!

Wonderfully Original
elenaanisimova8212 July 2008
I'm writing this note because somebody wrote a comment that this film is nothing we haven't seen before. Obviously, the writer's not from Ukraine and Russia, because this film is just everything we've never seen before - a beautiful tender tragic sexually-confused love story which at the end leaves everybody to make up their own minds. For us, Sappho is amazingly original and new. And amazingly popular in cinemas too.

Thinkong about it, maybe the writer's not from America too, because recently I haven't seen any American movies this open and interesting and intelligent. So I guess he's from Mars. Or maybe some magical country where they only make good movies, and not stupid films like "Wanted".

Sappho censored
Willy-Moerman7 February 2009
Crombie made a wonderful movie about the "tenth muse" Sappho. He won with his interpretation of "sapphic" love the Golden Aphrodite-award during the Cyprus International Film Festival. A fragment of that movie that I uploaded to YouTube.com made an end to my account. It was merciless terminated. I was aware of the very big reactions against the movie of the church and anti-gays, but I didn't know the YouTube-team was part of them. Of course I did vehemently protest against their intolerance, but I received no answer. Scandalous! The video-clip they censored can be seen on my site "Ancient Greece and Rome in movies". That site can be found by typing "klassieke oudheid in bioscoop" in the Google-search-field.
