Jack Axelrod, who played a mob boss on General Hospital for three years and had notable guest-starring turns on My Name Is Earl and Grey’s Anatomy, has died. He was 93.
Axelrod died Nov. 28 of natural causes in Los Angeles, his rep Jennifer Garland announced.
Axelrod showed up in Woody Allen’s Bananas (1971) in one of his first onscreen roles, and his big-screen résumé also included Hancock (2008), Winged Creatures (2008), Little Fockers (2010), Super 8 (2011), J. Edgar (2011) and The Lone Ranger (2013).
Axelrod portrayed mobster Victor Jerome on the ABC soap General Hospital from 1987-89 and the “Electrolarynx Guy” on the NBC comedy My Name Is Earl in 2005-08.
And on the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy in 2006-07, he stole scenes as the patient Charlie Yost, who spent a long time in a semi-conscious state at Seattle Grace before dying — just as he was about to get in a wheelchair to leave.

Bob Dylan and John Lennon were friends, but they were complete opposites in their approach to the media. Lennon was very revealing in interviews, particularly in the immediate aftermath of The Beatles’ breakup. He spoke candidly about his relationship with Yoko Ono and his distaste for other artists. Dylan, on the other hand, remained enigmatic. While he has given hundreds of interviews in his career, he is much less willing to open his private life to media scrutiny than Lennon was. In some ways, though, this has increased speculation about him.

Dylan first met The Beatles in 1964 and quickly gravitated toward Lennon. The Beatles’ road manager Neil Aspinall believed that Dylan recognized Lennon as the leader of the band. Lennon also took a great deal of musical inspiration from Dylan and enjoyed his friendship.

Beyoncé made history at the 2023 Grammy Awards when she became the most-awarded person in the Recording Academy’s history, with a total of 32 golden gramophones to her name. The “Alien Superstar” singer took the stage to accept her thirty-second Grammy Award at the ceremony and gave an emotional speech thanking those important to her. But for retired basketball star Magic Johnson, more should’ve been done to mark the momentous occasion.

Beyoncé released her seventh studio album Renaissance in July 2022, marking her first new solo album since 2016’s Lemonade. The LP was a celebration of Black and queer history through various forms of dance music.
Renaissance was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 2023 Grammy Awards alongside Bonobo’s Fragments, Diplo’s Diplo, Odesza’s The Last Goodbye, and Rüfüs du Sol’s Surrender.

The 2023 Grammy Awards returned to the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday evening, and while Beyoncé made history by breaking the record for the most Grammy wins of all time, Harry Styles took home Album of the Year for his album “Harry’s House.” Styles also won Best Pop Vocal Album.
Beyoncé took home four awards, bringing her career total to 32 — enough to unseat composer Georg Solti as the winningest artist of all time. But this marks the fourth time in a row she’s lost Album of the Year. An astonishing fact for the Grammy record-holder.
Bonnie Raitt pulled an upset in Song of the Year for “Just Like That,” besting the likes of Lizzo, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
Lizzo, meanwhile, became the first Black woman to win Record of the Year since Whitney Houston in 1994 for “I Will Always Love You.” Lizzo won for “About Damn Time,” stressing the need for positive,...

Most editions of Bob Dylan’s three-decades-and-running Bootleg Series focus on a particular phase of his career, but a few have zoomed in on the making of an especially hallowed record. As its title makes clear, that’s the case with Fragments—Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997), the 17th volume in the series. That one album is blown out into a five-disc package, which includes two full sets of unissued outtakes and another of live recordings from the Dylan-comes-alive tours that followed in the record’s wake.
As much as that sounds like overkill,...

“Fragments of the Last Will,” a post-wwii prisoner of war drama, has been set as the opening title of next month’s Tokyo International Film Festival. It is directed by Zeze Takahisa.
The festival, which runs Oct. 24-Nov. 2, 2022, will close with “Living,” directed by Oliver Hermanus and starring Bill Nighy. The film is a reworking of Kurosawa Akira’s 1952 classic “Ikiru,” with a revised screenplay by Ishiguro Kazuo.
“Fragments” is based on the true story of Yamamoto Hatao, a Japanese prisoner of war detained in a Siberian gulag. He believed that he would be able to reunite with his wife and children in Japan and for eleven years fought to keep the light of hope alive for his fellow POWs.
The picture stars Inomiya Kazunari, Kitagawa Keiko, Matsuzaka Tori, Nakajima Kento, Terao Akira, Kiritani Kenta and Yasuda Ken. It will enjoy a commercial release in Japan, via Toho, on Dec.

The editors behind Nitram, I Met A Girl, The Furnace and June Again will compete for this year’s Ellie Award for Best Editing in Feature Drama, while the television drama category will be a contest between those who cut Wakefield, The Tailings, Jack Irish, Eden and Bump.
The annual awards of the Australian Screen Editors (Ase) will be held in early February with the hope that travel restrictions between states will have eased.
“It’s been a tough two years and we think we all deserve to be together in person to celebrate these fine achievements in editing, and the results of everybody’s hard work during such difficult times,” Ase president Danielle Boesenberg tells If.
In addition to the feature film prize, I Met A Girl editor Melanie Annan will also be in contention for Best Editing in Documentary and Series for Three Songs for Benazir, shared with Christoph Wermke.

London-based Modern Films has bought U.K.-Ireland rights for “Silent Land,” the feature debut of Polish filmmaker Aga Woszczyńska, which played in competition at the recently wrapped Zurich Film Festival. Variety has been given exclusive access to the film’s international trailer.
Set in Italy, the slow-burn drama follows a couple whose summer holiday goes terribly wrong when Rahim (Ibrahim Keshk), an illegal immigrant hired to fix the pool in the house they paid for, suddenly dies. Produced by Lava Films, Kino Produzioni and I/O Post, with world sales handled by New Europe Film Sales, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Speaking to Variety ahead of the Zurich fest, Woszczyńska described the refugee crisis at the heart of her film as a “present-day plague.” “I would like for ‘Silent Land’ to make people more socially sensitive and not just close themselves off in their homes,...

Polish filmmaker Aga Woszczyńska – together with co-writer Piotr Litwin – started to work on the script of her first feature film “Silent Land” in 2016, and notes that since then, her film – which centers on the world’s response to migrants – has sadly become even more timely.
Set in Italy, the slow-burning drama sees a couple whose summer holiday goes terribly wrong when Rahim (Ibrahim Keshk), an illegal immigrant hired to fix the pool in the house they paid for, suddenly dies. But Woszczyńska views her film as a humanistic rather than a political statement.
“I don’t want to blame just Italy, but the whole of Europe. The whole world, which stays silent,” she tells Variety.
“When Afghanistan desperately needs our help, we are closing our eyes and our borders – just like [my characters] Adam and Anna. What is currently happening, the whole situation on the Polish-Belarusian border, it’s something worse than barbarism,...

A documentary collection of five “story behind the story” looks at compelling chapters from the world of sports doesn’t happen by accident. Particularly in a corner of the entertainment world driven by injecting drama into events in whatever sport happens to be on display, athletes are no stranger to the process of seeing how stories are written in real time.
So when the filmmaking duo of Maclain and Chapman Way set out to collect a handful of sports world reevaluations for the Netflix series “Untold,” they knew exactly what they were looking for in potential subjects. After an enlightening conversation with former tennis pro Mardy Fish — the main participant in “Breaking Point,” the volume’s last chapter — the Ways met with around 20 different former sports stars before honing in on the five that would come to make up “Untold.”

Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in The Hill, a family drama penned by Angelo Pizzo and the late Scott Marshall Smith, who passed away in December.
The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.
Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.
Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.
He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.
The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been announced.
“I’m setting out to make an iconic film in the classic sense, a beautiful sweeping and powerful inspirational story. One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Dennis was the first and only person I thought of for the lead role upon reading the script,” said Celentano. “There’s no doubt in my mind that he has the ability to play a loving, caring father while at the same time a staunch, powerful man – all the qualities needed to bring Pastor Hill’s character to life.”
“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”
Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.
The actor’s recent TV credits include Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Amazon’s Goliath and Fortitude, and Crackle’s The Art of More.
He’ll next appear in Alex Ranarivelo’s Born a Champion, Julio Quintana’s Blue Miracle, Andrew and Jon Erwin’s American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, Ray Giarratana’s The Tiger Rising, Sean McNamara’s Reagan, in which he’ll play the actor-turned president, and more.
Quaid is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Of course not, but perhaps you’re curious to know how much of the “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Killing Eve” star you’ll be getting. “The Chair” consists of six, half-hour episodes, all of which star Oh as Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, the new Chair of the English department at a prestigious (fictional) university tarnished by scandal. A professor (Jay Duplass) has been accused of improper behavior, and the investigation is made all the more complicated by a) his well-liked status within the community, and b) his possible relationship with Dr. Kim. Has she been promoted to guide the university into a new era, or is she the scapegoat to help the old guard escape any blame for their current predicament?
Bonus Reason: Amanda Peet! No, the “Brockmire” and “Togetherness” star isn’t...

Singer-songwriters Aubrie Sellers and Jade Jackson have combined their talents to become the duo Jackson+Sellers. The performers will release their debut album Breaking Point in October and gave a preview of that project Wednesday with their revved-up take on Julie Miller’s “The Devil Is an Angel.”

Blue is the Warmest Collar: Periot’s Projects a Sublime Visualization of Potent Memoir
For his third feature length documentary, Jean-Gabriel Périot tackles the celebrated 2009 memoir by Didier Eribon, Returning to Reims (Fragments) (only recently translated into English in 2018). A celebrated writer and professor (his first publication was a lauded autobiography on Michel Foucault in 1991), his memoir provides an intimate anecdotal family history which simultaneously charts the political narrative of France’s working class at large from post-wwii on.
Periot makes this a stellar visual odyssey, tossing in Adele Haenel as narrator to voice Eribon’s prose (the commingling and collapsing of sexual orientations and identities from this creative choice leaves a profound impression), weaving her voice over a series of footage from both documentary and narrative cinematic elements.…...

When she was a student at the prestigious Lodz Film School in Poland, Jagoda Szelc was offered the chance to shoot a feature film. It was an unexpected opportunity for the aspiring filmmaker, who was then in her third year. But after it was produced on a shoestring budget, “Tower. A Bright Day” would go on to play the Berlin Film Festival and win a host of awards in Poland, unexpectedly catapulting Szelc into the limelight.
It was not an easy place for a first-time filmmaker to be. “I was very lost,” Szelc admits. Critics compared “Tower” to the works of male directors and seemed flummoxed that a young woman could helm such an auspicious debut. In one TV segment that left a lasting mark, two male presenters argued that Szelc was too young to understand what she was doing behind the camera. “There was a lot of patronizing [behavior toward] me,...

This week’s Handmaid’s Tale delivered June and Janine to the Chicago warfront in an unceremonious, decidedly unexpected way: soaked head-to-toe with milk and riding — as Janine pointed out — in a giant refrigerator.
Regardless of their mode of transportation, the two rogue handmaids managed to elude Gilead soldiers and hook up with a band of resistance fighters. Craig “Mums” Grant, an actor and poet who appeared in all six seasons of HBO’s prison drama Oz among dozens of film, TV and stage credits, died Thursday, apparently of natural causes, according to his representatives. He was 52.
Billed as muMs da Schemer, the name he used during his early slam-poetry years, Grant guested or recurred as Arnold “Poet” Jackson on Oz during its entire 1997-2003 run, appearing in all but seven episodes. His character was a heroin addict who is released from “Emerald City,” only to return after killing a drug dealer. A member of the Homeboys prison gang, the character often recited poems about social and political injustice endured by Black Americans.
Born and raised in New York City, Grant competed in at the 1996 National Poetry Slam as a member of the Nuyorican team and was featured in the 1998 feature documentary Slam Nation: The Sport of Spoken Word.

Two of Fox's biggest shows are entering a hiatus in early March, but they will be doing so with action-packed episodes.
9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star will each conclude for an undetermined amount of time with their March 8 installments, the 8th episodes of their current seasons, it has been announced.
Given the sporadic scheduling of other shows in the Covid-19 era, it's impressive that each of the shows will have aired for eight weeks uninterrupted, but, unfortunately, we don't know when they will be back.
The shows are still deep into production, so it makes sense to put them on hiatus if production needs to catch up. Creating TV since the pandemic comes with more hurdles than before, meaning that the delivery time for the episodes is longer than ever.
So, what can you expect from the winter finales of both 9-1-1 series? We're happy to share what we know.

Sardinia, a longtime a magnet for international productions spanning from James Bond classic “The Spy Who Loved Me” to George Clooney-directed TV series “Catch-22,” is ready for its close up again.
Following a hiatus due to the coronavirus crisis, the Italian island known for its emerald coast and ancient monuments is now hosting shoots for food and travel TV shows while scouting is under way for prospective big productions, including several from global streaming giants.
“We are doing lots of location scouting with Netflix, Amazon and Disney,” says Nevina Satta, head of the Sardinia Film Commission, who has long been a champion of eco-friendly best practices on set.
She has been busy training local executive producers in Covid-19 safety protocols alongside previous “green set” directives that the film commission had in place. Incidentally, during the pandemic, Sardinia had the lowest rates of coronavirus infection in Italy.

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (Aftrs) is stepping up its Masterclass program as part of its Open program, having enlisted director Rowan Woods (The Boys, Winged Creatures, Little Fish, and pictured) to teach a class on the differences between film and television directing. When asked by FilmInk about his teaching style, Woods says that traditionally, master classes involve film practitioners telling war stories. "That's an easy way to approach it," he laughs, "because students want to hear the inside trading and the anecdotal aspects of your work from go to whoa." The versatile director quickly disclaims his class as a recounting of his laurels.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hudson will play one of the nuns in the orphanage where the Stooges spend some time as children alongside "Glee" star Jane Lynch, who has been cast as Mother Superior in the film. There’s another nun for the upcoming comedy “The Three Stooges.” Deadline has reported Jennifer Hudson joined the cast as Sister Rosemary. She will be a nun along with actress Jane Lynch (“Glee”), who will play Mother Superior, and Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), who is playing Mother Mengele. Hudson hasn’t appeared in anything since 2008. In that year, her films included “The Secret Life of Bees,” “Fragments,” and “Sex and the City.” She won an Oscar for her supporting role in 2006’s “Dreamgirls.” The film also stars Sean Hayes (“Will & Grace,” “Bucket List”), Will Sasso (“MADtv,” “Less than Perfect”), Chris Diamantopoulos (“Under New Management,” “Wedding Daze”), Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family,” “Four Brothers”) and Stephen Collins (“7th Heaven,” “Blood Diamond”). Bobby and Peter Farrelly will direct their own screenplay. The film is currently under production.Source: Deadline...

There is now one nun for every 'Stooge.'
Jennifer Hudson, the impossibly talented star of "Dreamgirls," will be soon be singing (we hope!) for the orphans as she joins the cast of "The Three Stooges," according to Deadline.
Jennifer will be playing the role of Sister Rosemary, one of the nuns at the orphanage where Larry, Moe and Curly grew up. She joins Jane Lynch as Mother Superior and Larry David as Mother Mengele.
Hmm... could a spin-off called "The Three Nuns" be far behind? Not to be confused, of course, with "The Three Sisters," the stage play by Anton Chekhov. Woo woo woo!
The cast also includes Chris Diamontopoulos (Moe), Sean Hayes (Larry), Will Sasso (Curly), Stephen Collins (the villainous Mr. Harter) and Craig Bierko (the thuggish Mac).
Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for her performance as Effie White in "Dreamgirls" and has since appeared in "Sex and the City,...

Jennifer Hudson is probably enjoying more pop culture relevance now than she has in a while, the newly svelte spokeswoman for Weight Watchers with a killer Oscar dress to go with it. Her film career, though, has been a lot more random, following up her Oscar-winning role in Dreamgirls with the Sex and the City movie and two indies, The Secret Life of Bees and Fragments. She's still got one more indie coming that could potentially get her back on a lot of radars-- Winnie, the biopic about Nelson Mandela's controversial wife-- but she's also taken a new role in a movie that's guaranteed to be seen. According to Deadline Hudson will play one of the three nuns running an orphanage in The Three Stooges, the Peter and Bobby Farrelly-directed comedy that updates the classic comedy trio. Hudson will join Jane Lynch and, uh, Larry David as the...

As a producer, I'm still getting accustomed to the highs and lows of producing. My producing partner, Jenny Deller, and I have seen many peaks and valleys over the past few years developing our first feature, Future Weather. Our project was selected as a finalist for major film contest, the script won a best screenplay award from the Nantucket Film Festival, and we've entered into talks with an Oscar-nominated actress to star. But for every one of these achievements, we've had ten times as many disappointments and rejections. I guess it goes with the territory.
A definite high was the day I found out Future Weather was selected for Find's Producers Lab (2009). Little did I know that this victory would bring me face-to-face with another harsh reality: indie filmmaking is a lot more treacherous than it used to be. Keep reading to find out why despite all the challenges,...
