Kevin Nash, Hulk Hogan, And Spoilers Mark The Beginning Of The End For WCW
jeremycrimsonfox2 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The first WCW Monday Nitro of 1999, this episode is basically known by many wrestling fans as the episode that was the beginning of the end for World Championship Wrestling. Set two weeks after WCW Starrcade 1998, which saw Goldberg's streak and reign as WCW World Heavyweight Champion at the hands of Kevin Nash, all due to a disguised Scott Hall tazing him after interference from Disco Inferno and Bam Bam Bigelow (which was allowed as the mach was no disqualification), last week, the nWO Wolfpac leader issued a rematch to Goldberg to set things right after the interference.

Taking place in Atlanta, Georgia (Goldberg's hometown), what was supposed to be a rematch would soon turn into the beginning of the end for World Championship Wrestling. Goldberg ends up being arrested by the police on accusation of "aggravated stalking" by Miss Elizabeth. Pretty soon, this plot becomes painful, as Liz can't keep her story straight, and the fact that the interrogation is actually being recorded, making this looks like a horrid police drama that is too painful to watch. As a result, Hollywood Hogan, who in the story, was going to quit wrestling to go into politics, decides to takes Goldberg's place in the main event match after Nash fires out about it, accusing the Hulkster of setting this up.

Starting with a match between Hugh Morris and Glaicer (the wrestler ripping off Mortal Kombat), the matches are basically all miss (except for Chris Jericho Vs. Perry Saturn, which despite the ending, was good). However, all the horrid matches pale in comparison to the two mistakes that make this Monday Nitro infamous for starting WCW's downfall.

The first? After Hogan accepts Kevin Nash's challenge, Tony Schiavone would actually go and spoil the results of the main event of that night's WWF Raw Is War as a way to take advantage of the show airing live while Raw Is War is pre-taped (and this was under orders from Eric Bischoff. Adding in the line "that's gonna put some butts in the seats" is true, but not for WCW, as because of this, many wrestling fans (600,000, to be exact) would switch to Raw Is War to see if he was right, and decided to leave it on that show, For the unlucky few who decided to stay, they would get the second reason, the main event between Hogan and Nash, where, with one finger poke of doom, Hogan becomes champion, the two nWo factions unite, and. The two, along with Scott Hall, Lex Luger, and Scott Steiner, beat down Goldberg and cuff him to the lower rope, tazing, and even spraypainting on his back and head (which didn't stop until after the show went off air, as the Atlanta Falcons NFL team at the time would come in to save him, as shown on the following Thunder). After this, World Champion Wrestling would never recover, as the WWF (now WWE) enjoyed its victory in the ratings that night because of the spoilers bringing in more viewers, and the fact this episode would make fans aware of the problems WCW has.
