Girl on the Run is the pilot film for 77 Sunset Strip. Apparently it was shown by Warner Brothers as a feature film to rob Roy Huggins of the creator credit.
This pilot is different from the rest of the series. It only has Efrem Zimbalist Jr as Stuart Bailey. A special operative in the second world war now turned private eye in LA.
Stu has been hired by a client to find a missing woman named Kathy. When in fact she has witnessed a murder by someone with a high profile. Kathy is on the run as the police failed to protect her.
Following Stu is a young contract killer Kevin Smiley (Edd Byrnes.) Hired by the high profile killer hoping Stu would lead him to Kathy.
Stu manages to track Kathy down and uses an actor gain her trust.
It comes across as a B movie with a hackneyed plot. There is some location footage of Hollywood. There are several jass numbers like in Peter Gunn. Smiley is full of cool lingo popular in that era. Now looking embarrassingly dated.
