**SPOILERS** What causes most small plane crashes is pilot error. Mostly, fuel. either not tapping out the water from the tanks (a tap off point is provided just for this purpose), or simply running out of fuel. That was this problem. The kid (Belmont), could fly alright, but the aircraft they stole had just landed, and hadn't been refueled. Turned out, the kid only wanted a joyride, but the older prisoner (Packer), had plans to escape. They were both stupid. Belmont for agreeing to take the plane, and Packer for talking him into it. Kid had 9 months left to serve, and he'd have been out, breathing free air. Packer was now going back for an even longer stay. IF the state decides to use Belmont as a witness, he'll probably get a reduced sentence for grand theft. IF he's lucky.
