You know it was coming... somewhere along the way, Dobie and Maynard had to "dress up" as commanding officers. Actually, they have a legit excuse, as they're cast in Lt. Merriwether's new army play; Dobie stars as Major Gates, with a trim black moustache, and Maynard is Sergeant Mooney.
The play, all about being a soldier in Korea, is called "The Gory Battle of Deadman's Gulch." Amazing! Dobie is lucky enough to get a few acting pointers from his dad, alias Herbert X. Gillis, once a distinguished actor in army plays himself!
One thing.... the new colonel's daughter, Dorrit McCurdy (played by Carol Byron) won't even look at Dobie --until he parades by her in FULL uniform and moustache. Not a bad idea, although it may lead to him being thrown in the brig!
Richard Clair, who plays Lt. Merriwether, was also a screenwriter and wrote the cult classic, BEWARE, THE BLOB (1972), which was a sequel to THE BLOB, starring Steve McQueen. He also wrote LSD; I HATE YOU in 1966. Clair appeared seven times on the show. Carol Byron (as Dorrit) was a regular on OZZIE AND HARRIET.
Welll written by Bud Nye, who wrote 16 episodes for the series. And don't miss the wacky take-off on ROMEO AND JULIET, starring Dobie as Juliet(?) and Maynard as Romeo???
Funny stuff for Dobie fans. From SEASON 2 remastered dvd box set.
