If you could believe it, Dobie "fills in" for a good friend and (temporarily) marries his bride, Jane (Betty Rollin), as a formality before she reaches him in South America. TOO, too much confusion... better if they had Maynard stand in instead!
The problem here is not the celebration... but Zelda being a bridesmaid and coming up with yet another ingenious plan to snag Dobie as her own husband once and for all. As she tells it, they were "meant for each other!"
Since this all takes place on a ship, and Dobie wants to escape lovesick Zelda, he and Maynard stowaway, figuring they'll lose her. Not so fast. Zelda, unknown to them, is an official member of the wedding party --even catching the bridal bouquet! -- and is staying on board and going to South America with Jane.
MOST not a good outcome for Dobie, but at least he has Maynard for company??? Some really funny scenes here, and with excellent dialogue as usual. Popular actor Alberto Morin plays the captain and we get an early glimpse of Betty Rollin, working briefly as an actress, before becoming a noted NBC and ABC news correspondent.
Rollin later wrote the acclaimed book, "First You Cry," about her long battle with cancer, later turned into a movie starring Mary Tyler Moore. She passed in 2023.
