Rolling Stone‘s interview series King for a Day features long-form conversations between senior writer Andy Greene and singers who had the difficult job of fronting major rock bands after the departure of an iconic vocalist. Some of them stayed in their bands for years, while others lasted just a few months. In the end, however, they all found out that replacement singers can themselves be replaced. This edition features former Manzarek–Krieger singer Dave Brock.

When last year’s rock field nominations at the Grammys were announced, the reactions were mixed. A lot of people were happy that the field prioritized rock legends and “authentic” rock music over alternative-leaning. However, others were quite disappointed by the lack of high-profile — and mostly young — artists who were snubbed in favor of the veterans. To many, the rock nominations weren’t exciting without those interesting committee-inserted picks we typically got. The Recording Academy is always aware of criticism, so this year let’s consider who might ultimately get picked for prestigious nominations, young and old.
SEEBillie Eilish could tie this Frank Sinatra Grammy record with ‘TV’
A few field favorites are in contention this year. Perhaps the biggest is Jack White, who’s competing with his single “Taking Me Back” as well as with the album “Fear of the Dawn.” He is most likely the front-runner for now,...

Critically beloved albums like Radiohead‘s “Ok Computer” and “Kid A,” St. Vincent‘s self-titled 2014 album, and Fiona Apple‘s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters” have all won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album, making it one of the most consistent categories for quality. This year the alternative field will see the addition of Best Alternative Music Performance after years of alternative songs having to compete in rock or pop fields. But who is going to get in?
Multiple previous winners are returning. The Smile, a side project for Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, has earned critical success with the record “A Light for Attracting Attention,” which is led by the singles “The Smoke” and “You Will Never Work in Television Again,” either of which could be recognized in the performance category. The Black Keys performed a trio of tracks and reflected on their now-20-year career in rock as part of CBS Mornings’ “Saturday Sessions.”

The Black Keys appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to showcase two of their recent singles, “Wild Child” and “It Ain’t Over.” The rock band offered a raucous, garage rock-infused take on the tracks — both of which appear their latest LP, Dropout Boogie.
Dropout Boogie, out now on Nonesuch Records, marks the blues rock duo’s eleventh studio album. It arrives one day before the twentieth anniversary of the group’s first full-length, The Big Come Up.
“Watching bands come and go, it’s fucking insane that we’re still here.

“You got a love that’s a real long shot,” sings Dan Auerbach on “It Ain’t Over,” the loping, funky second single from Dropout Boogie. Dude might as well be singing about himself.
In a moment when rock music barely exists in the pop conversation it once dominated, there is no logical reason that Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, two blues fans from Akron, Ohio, with a fondness for first takes, should have made it to the beginning of the Obama administration, let alone 21 years. But here they are,...

In advance of their forthcoming studio album, Dropout Boogie, the Black Keys have dropped the neo-soul banger “It Ain’t Over,” marking the second glimpse of the record following the March release of lead single “Wild Child.”
Dropout Boogie, out May 13 on Nonesuch Records, marks the blues rock duo’s eleventh studio album — and, in a weird twist of fate, the record will be released one day before the twentieth anniversary of the group’s first full-length, The Big Come Up. “Watching bands come and go, it’s fucking insane that we’re still here.

After the Black Keys wrapped up Dropout Boogie, their forthcoming 11th record, something unlikely happened. “Dan [Auerbach] called me and said, ‘It’s really good,’ which is unusual for him,” says drummer Patrick Carney from his Nashville home. “I don’t think he’s ever called and said that. He doesn’t go back and listen to his stuff.” Auerbach agrees: “Pat’s always the one who says, after each record, ‘This is the best record we’ve ever done.’ Literally. Every single one. When Hank Williams Jr. began his music career in the Sixties, he did little to distance himself from the shadow cast by his monumental father. He released albums with titles like Songs My Father Left Me, sang “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Hey Good Lookin’” in the same lonesome style, and appeared onstage at the Grand Ole Opry, the very institution that fired his dad in 1952. The pressure to imitate Hank Williams and fill the void left by his untimely death at 29 was great, and it nearly swallowed him whole.

New comedy Our Ladies is the latest UK film to ditch the jolly hockey stick representation of old in favour of complex characters
You can’t help wondering how British movie schoolgirls would fare among their American counterparts. How would Hermione Granger cope in the high school canteen with the Heathers or the Mean Girls? Take away her wand and they’d eat her for lunch. While US screen teens are often worldly, sharp and fashionable, it feels as though us Brits are still clinging to a wholesome, jolly hockey sticks fantasy of female education, as seen in the likes of St Trinian’s or Wild Child, where the pupils are naughty and anarchic, but still reassuringly innocent.

Sam Williams, the grandson of country music’s forefather Hank Williams Sr., has announced his debut album. Glasshouse Children, a collection of 10 songs, will be released August 20th on Mercury Nashville.
But sparse country like his grandfather’s “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” this is not. Sam Williams works in lush, immersive dream-pop country. His new song “Kids,” featuring Keith Urban on guitar, is awash in sweeping production. The through-line is Williams’ plaintive voice, full of longing and vulnerability. “We want to feel connected so we pretend to...

ABC Scraps ‘Thirtysomething’ Sequel Pilot, Vampire Drama ‘The Brides’ as Remaining Slate Takes Shape
ABC has made a range of decisions on its remaining pilots this season, which were all shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Firstly, the network is scrapping its pilots for the dramas “The Brides” and “Thirtysomething(else)” and the comedy “Valley Trash.” The news is surprising for “The Brides” — a female-led vampire soap opera with “Riverdale’s” Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing — and “Thirtysometing(else) — a sequel series to the classic dramedy “Thirtysomething” with the original creators and multiple original cast members returnin. Both shows were pegged as early frontrunners for series pickups prior to the pandemic. According to sources, both shows were on the pricier side to produce, which may have contributed to ABC cutting them loose.
Elsewhere on the slate, ABC will be picking up actor options with intent to shoot the following pilots once production can safely begin: drama “Rebel” starring Katey Sagal and based on the life of Erin Brockovich; “Harlem’s Kitchen,...

ABC intends to shoot five pilots once production can safely resume and is rolling three projects to its next pilot cycle.

ABC has handed a late pilot order to Kids Matter Now, a multi-camera comedy from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and to be directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), Kids Matter Now centers on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
The pilot order for Kids Matter Now is for the regular pilot season despite coming after ABC recently gave a second-cycle pilot order to drama Triage.
ABC delayed pilot order confirmations for several comedies this season as it employed a different strategy. Four comedy scripts quietly received informal cast-contingent orders by the network early on. The other three — Home Economics, Untitled Emily Kapnek/Dean Holland (aka Wild Child) and Valley Trash...

ABC has given a pilot order to an untitled single-camera comedy written by Splitting Up Together creator/executive producer Emily Kapnek and to be directed by Splitting Up Together director/executive producer Dean Holland. Like ABC has done with several of its hot comedy scripts this year, including Home Economics, the network quietly gave the untitled Kapnek/Holland project (aka Wild Child) a cast-contingent pilot order a few weeks ago.
Deadline can reveal exclusively that Trinkets star Quintessa Swindell has been tapped as the lead in the pilot, lifting the contingency. ABC Studios, where Kapnek is under an overall deal, is the studio.
The Untitled Kapnek/Holland is described as a “love story with a twist” centering on New York City teenager Lennon Cochrane (Swindell), whose life is turned upside down when she stumbles on a family secret.
Swindell’s Lennon is creative, rebellious and endlessly indulged by her mother.

The McU isn’t planning on slowing down with the character introductions any time soon, as the already crowded cinematic universe is now exploring bringing Spider-Woman into the mix. And according to our sources, the studio already have an actress in mind to take over the role.
We’re being told that American Horror Story star Emma Roberts is being eyed to play the superhero on the big screen. There’s even a chance she might debut in Spider-Man 3, though nothing is certain as of yet and from what we understand, she’s just one name on Marvel’s wishlist at the moment. And given that this intel comes to us from the same sources who said the studio is eyeing Daniel Radcliffe for Moon Knight and Tom Holland is in talks for a Venom 2 cameo, both of which we now know to be true, we’ve no reason to doubt it.

In 2008, millennials were just beginning to discover the joys and horrors of the opposite sex. This coming-of-age classic gave us a few key lessons
This year Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging turns 10 – the same age I was when the film was first released in 2008 (in cinemas that still sold reasonably priced tickets). It only seems like yesterday that a large audience of pre-teen girls discovered this homage to the travails of teenage life. Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging was the lovechild of two novels by Louise Rennison: Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging (1999) and It’s Ok, I’m Wearing Really Big Knickers (2001).
