WTF?
lotekguy-117 May 2021
When this episode started, I thought another movie had run into the recorded time slot. The unexpected shift of time, place and characters gave me cinematic whiplash. Patience was eventually rewarded by learning the backstory (or forestory, or both) of dauntless Amalia. This episode answered some key questions, while leaving much more for viewers to learn and and the characters to accomplish in Season 2. We're all left with hope on both sides of the screen, which suits what has gone before.

Yikes. What was this. Loop
vintagegeek19 May 2021
This episode will throw you for a loop. You'll swear you're watching the wrong movie. After 15 minutes it'll tie you back to the origins of Mrs True and et cetera. It felt confusing since it never really explains who they're fighting and why. It needs a prologue. Maybe this was suppose to be it. Hopefully I can find something on the net which lays the storyline out clearly. Loved the show up till this point. Hoping for Season 2 and further Edwardian day activities. Who are the Galanthi, why did they spore people, and what does being a stripe mean? Plus a dozen other questions.

The explainer episode. I loved it even if the smooth brains here can't handle the genre shift - that makes perfect sense btw.

Just Wow!
kathi-2223618 May 2021
At the beginning of this episode, I was completely disoriented and confused. I thought there was some sort of bug in the HBOMax app! But once I finally realized it was working correctly, I relaxed and let myself be carried along by the story. And what a story!

I have loved this series from the beginning, but this broadens the scope and gives me so much more to think about!

Please don't let us have to wait too long for season 2!

A Tour de Force

OK, this is the episode that proves that "The Nevers" is in the same ballpark of great TV as "Firefly" and "Dollhouse."

What?
Near-L19 May 2021
So people are disliking this amazing finale? I'm scared that perfect shows like this one might not get renewed because people dislike the complexity and slow pace. Or even the number of episodes which was not even their fault. This show having a total rating below 8 and this episode having a rating below 9 are atrocities that need to be fixed.

Warning: Spoilers
The first scene came out I knew you cast&crew were laughing at/with us, just like the way how Cabin in the Woods opening scene caught us. And that space horror moment, that Bushwhacked style reprise, that was quite a revision, too. I've always liked Amalia True, because she gave me this resemblance of Cap. Mal Reynolds, with only too much to bear yet still most of the time remained Stoic. How these women and men dealt with the change, that's the mystery here in an Victorian age. Now we have some answers, like her, Amalia (maybe not so) True. I love so many moments here in this episode, especially where "Amalia" immediately exposed her trust to the good (and cute) doctor. And when she gave her real name to Penance, that's a very beautiful interlude for the season. I've always love Jane Espenson. Sometimes I can't tell the difference between her writing and Joss's, maybe that's the beauty of it, a team of good writers working together, making art. I really really wish the show could remain the creative way like how it started. I sense it, the show was created because of love, and we all knew love will bring us hope. That generates the world to "be a better place". I just wish it could last for a little while.

So good to see Claudia back!
cthompsn18 May 2021
All I want to say is that I didn't remember how good Claudia Black was until I was reminded in this episode. She has a gravitas and nuance that is sorely missed in most actors. Great to see you Ms. Black!

Not so good episode for season end
lopo-3877818 May 2021
This is something they should start the series with and especially with so short season as 6 episodes. I dont get it whats up with all the new shows doing up to 6 episode a season. Les and less episodes a season and then the story wont advance fast enough. Still i dont understand whats this series is about. 5 episodes were ok to watch and interesting but then end it with a episode that patches some holes that should of been the first episode of the series to make sense all of it. Never mind that the shifting from flashback to where the 5th episode leaved us was weird and confusing.

provocative
Kirpianuscus22 May 2021
To define as provocative The Nevers is a nonsense. This is the nature of this series. But in the case of this episode, the Sci Fi beginning , in clash with good explanations, becomes a challenge not always comfortable. I admit, my feeling was about the end of the series more than the end of season. What can be said, was said. Explanations, bridges, stories details, completed by few spoons of imagination are enough. Because nothing is missing. But , sure, it can be only a good, precious premises. But, obvious, it becomes a series only for its fans.

[6.7] False
cjonesas12 August 2021
A mumbo jumbo of an episode with its biggest mistake having a dismal flow and a somewhat total lack in cohesion. As such, it doesn't deliver and anybody happy with is only a hardcore fan and may not be a realistic person appreciating true story-telling in its most superb yet simple form with the most important matter having an amazing flow.

At the minimum, it should have been made as a first episode to give people time to appreciate the crazy storylines and plots.

Least favorite of the episodes so far. Felt that the first episode was a bit slow, but the second really picked up for me, as did the following episodes, except for this one... i was wondering if you know who actually was from you know where, but the bridge connecting these time frames was pretty boring so far. Feels a bit like a cop-out, but hopefully they make it cooler later? I know that this isn't the real finale of the season, so maybe my feelings will change after i have seen it all but as of right now, the direction feels a bit off for me and i don't like the sudden change in storytelling. Hopefully i will either get used to that or it won't happen this way much more. I will have to remember to update this if my opinion changes later after having the full story of the first season.

Holy crap! This episode changes everything!
kubrickwon18 May 2021
What a fantastic twist. Not in a Keyser Soze way, but in a way that changes the core story, the main character, and the entire genre in such wonderful ways. Amalia's character is fantastic! I see her in an entirely new light. This is storytelling at its best! I loved every second of it! This is Whedon at his best. WB/HBO, let him finish his story! #BringBackWhedon.

Amazing Episode
temitopegb20 May 2021
The first 30 mins might throe you for a loop but in the next 30, you know why.

The mid-season finale was well put together and like every other episode, you need to watch it twice to catch everything. You are left with answers to a lot of questions and enough curiosity to stick around for the answers to the remaining burning questions.

It's definitely nit a boring show. It's a pay attention and connect the dots kinda show.

So don't attention to the lazy TV watchers, who have the answers always spoon fed to them. Stick around and enjoy the wild ride. It's why we all fell in love with the show anyway.

Such a strong plot twist. At first, it seemed boring, but on the 6th series it just tore my brain. It was a very cool idea.

A Blinder
gaijin-772822 June 2021
I'd watched the previous episodes after being hooked by my wife and was wondering where exactly this series was going. It doesn't matter to me how good the performances and script are (and they most definitely are excellent) if I'm not seeing the point.

Well I needn't have feared because this episode provides the framework on which all the rest hang and now I can't wait for more.

Very nice too to see Claudia Black, an actress I always enjoy watching, with a decent role.

Highly recommended.

Season 1A Review
southdavid8 September 2021
I'm taking a bit of a guess at this, but I'm going to stick with the best guess right now and review these six episodes as season 1A, assuming that the next six will be season 1B. I really enjoyed the show thus far, though it's now controversial creative force hangs over if like an uncomfortable spectre.

In Victorian London, a series of women, from all walks of life, have developed exceptional abilities. Viewed as a threat from the hierarchy and distrusted by the masses, the women are hunted, abused and experimented on. Amalia True (Laura Donnelly) runs an orphanage/Sanctuary for all the "touched" as those with the development has come to be know as. Her group tries to save as many touched as the can, but their case is made harder by Maladie (Amy Manson) a psychotic killer who is recruiting dangerous touched to her cause.

The thing I really liked about "The Nevers" is (I hope not intrinsically) linked to some of the aspects about it that made me feel awkward. I really liked the dialogue and writing, like much of Whedon's previous work it's smart and witty and a bit knowing, but not overly so. I really liked the main characters, even if one or two are actors covering relatively similar ground that they have before. The shows visual effects are generally well done and some, such as a fight that takes place with a character who can stand on water extremely so. I liked the plot, even when the sixth episode whips away much of what you've come to understand as being the case.

It'll be interesting to see what the back six are like, without Whedon's direct involvement. I suspect that it will be determined by whether his long-term associates, Melissa Iqbal and Jane Espenson choose to remain with it. I hope so, as I'd really like to see where the series is going.

Episode 6 NOT Season Finale
markleyb18 June 2021
This is such a brilliant show! I can't wait for Part 2 of Season 1. For those of you who feel that this was a lame ending to a season, it's because it's not. If anything, it's a mid-season finale. There are 12 episodes total. The release date for part 2 of the season has yet to be revealed. There are several articles online to this effect.

Very Disappointing Series Ending
kwolf-6249118 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What I liked about this show was the Victorian Steampunk girl-powered story line. They could have spent 3 seasons looking for the cause of their conditions. But, no they chose the low-hanging fruit of time travel and aliens. That's a whole different show.

Fantastic twist, hoping for more!

I don't think it's fair to say that this turn ruined the show, we can't possibly know until the real season finale.

And it's not like they're gonna skip all the Edwardian scenes from now on.

Culinary inaccuracy
poinla3720 May 2021
Just so you know, Financiers are in a rectangular shape. The cakes shown on screen are Cannelés which are French cakes from the 20th century.

Although, if taking into account the fact that plenty of British Bakeries nowadays, try to copy and remake the French pastries whithout talent nor accuracy, this is totally spot on!

Anyways, great show!

Wait..what?
Like many others, I started this episode and immediately thought "Am I still watching the same show? Did it randomly shift to another show? What is happening?!"

However, as the episode progressed, it was an amazing way of explaining the background of how we got to the beginning of the series and also opened up a world of new questions and ideas that allows this series to progress into something potentially amazing with much more story to tell than we ever initially thought from the get go.

The entire concept of what I *thought* was the show from the first episode until this one was broken and yet somehow still preserved, but just in a different light. I am very excited and interested to see what the next season/episodes will bring as we delve more into the characters and story to come.

wonderful steampunk character-driven series PRIOR to this aberration!
spasticfreakshow17 May 2021
The Victorian Era, Gilded Age period piece is such a fun backdrop for a fantasy series, and the character development and interrelations between them were only just beginning to get really interesting prior to this episode, so this being the series/season finale seems bizarre in ANY case. So had they heavily invested in tying together some of the loose threads and relationships in this last episode, it could at least have made some vague sense that this is the end of a full season, rather than a mid-season finale.

But drastically shifting genres to a low-budget amateur stab at a Doctor Who episode for the season finale? What an utter waste. It is mind boggling in its stupidity and high school level writing quality and production values. The off-putting genre switch, which doesn't work or seamlessly transition in any way, shape or form, steals every moment needed to advance the plot, the characters and the dynamics of the show. They might as well have gone full Blair Witch Project with the last episode, shaky cam in the woods, with some of the main cast and a horde of fresh faces, returned to town with their homemade film, and it would have made just as much sense.

Do yourself a favor if you've loved the series until now: skip this episode and pick it back up next season. If it gets renewed after this fiasco.
