My favourite Il Trittico production is the 1981 Met production with Renata Scotto singing all three female lead roles, Gabriele Bacquier and Cornell MacNeil. The La Scala performance is also very good even if I was disappointed in the picture quality and Rosalind Plowright.
This Met production however is very memorable. Puccini's music throughout is wonderful, and played and conducted to perfection. The costumes and sets also play a large part in the production's success, Il Tabarro like the music and opera themselves is suitably compact, Suor Angelica is ethereal and Gianni Schicchi has a lot of colour.
Il Trittico also succeeds in its atmosphere. Il Tabarro is very haunting and intense, just hear Michele's Nulla Silenzio and you'll know what I mean. Suor Angelica is a poignant drama as it should be. I agree however that Gianni Schicchi is the best performed of the three, it is so much fun and one of the better Schicchis I've seen actually.
The production as these Met productions always do looks fantastic in High Defintion, the productions are well lit and the sound is clear. The performances are excellent, Maria Guleghina and Juan Pons do great work of a solid cast, and Suor Angelica is sung and acted very well by Barbara Frittoli with lovely pianissimo singing. Alessandro Corbelli's brilliant Schicchi is my favourite performance though.
Overall, very memorable. 10/10 Bethany Cox
