BIG TOWN – The Sniper – 1955

BIG TOWN was a series that ran for 249 episodes from 1950 to 1956. It is about the managing editor of a "Big Town" newspaper. The city is never named. For the first four years the editor was played by Patrick McVey. For the last two seasons the lead was played by Mark Stevens. This episode is from 1953 with Patrick McVey. It is episode 186 of the production run.

Someone has been using a sniper's rifle to shoot cops. The last cop was killed by someone shooting from the roof of the newspaper managed by Mark Stevens. The only clue to who it might be is the broken lens from a pair of glasses. The Police Lt in charge, Dabbs Greer, enlists the help of the newspaper to help track the killer. Stevens has his people go through the files of his, as well as the out of town papers.

The lens is traced to a small glass grinding outfit. They look up the prescription and come up with a name, Jean Byron. The Police and Stevens pay the woman a visit but dig up nothing of use. Some further digging soon comes up with a man, Chick Chandler, who had been visiting the Newspaper offices at the time of the shooting.

Chandler turns out to be just the man they are looking for. He is going after cops because his brother had been killed during a Police shootout. Chandler had been shooting cops in revenge. He had been a top marksman in the army.

Also in the cast are, Trudy Wroe, Barry Kelly, Keye Luke and Ann Doran. Doran worked between 1922 and 1988 with roles in over 1000 films and television episodes.

The director is former big screen man, George Waggner. Waggner's film work includes, OPERATION PACIFIC, THE FIGHTING KENTUCKIAN, GUNFIGHTERS and THE WOLF MAN.

The series was based on the long running radio series of the same name. The radio program ran from 1937 to 1952. There were also several low budget films made in the 40's like, BIG TOWN, BIG TOWN AFTER DARK and BIG TOWN SCANDAL based on the same source.
