Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like the rat-chewed body of Santa Claus!
bensonmum226 November 2008
What an excellent way to kick-off the Holiday Season! The wife and I have been making our way through the first three seasons of Bones and so far, "The Santa in the Slush" just might be one of my favorite episodes. In this one, Booth and Brennan are called in to investigate the death of a man they later identify as Kris Kringle. In full Santa regalia, Kringle is found dead, his body decomposing, lying in a sewer. Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like the rat-chewed body of Santa Claus!

There are other episodes of Bones that are more realistic, that take their subject matter more seriously, and that toy more with the emotions of the viewer - but there are few that are this much fun. A lot of the usual drama is pushed to the side in favor of a more comedic tone - and with excellent results. Don't misunderstand, I realize there is a touch of comedy in almost every episode, but here it takes center stage. And just the notion of a temp agency specializing in Santas and Elves is hysterical. The interplay between Bones and Booth was never better. The subplots dealing with Bones' attempt to give her father his dream Christmas in jail and Booth's desire to spend the Holiday with his son add just the right touch of humanity without ever becoming schmaltzy. Altogether, this is one fine episode of a wonderful show. A 9/10 seems right to me.

Starting my Christmas season
lastliberal28 November 2007
Just the thing to start the Christmas viewing of shows to get me in the spirit. Santa barely recognizable as he lay in a pile of sewage. But, yes it is Kris Kringle, and that opens a slew of jokes to make this an interesting Christmas show.

I am still not completely thrilled by this series, as the characters in Kathy Reich's books are so much more interesting, but they have to appeal to the Fox and WB viewers, so they bring in the pretty boy. The supporting cast is always enjoyable as they bring some interesting characters to the table. I do like the addition of John Francis Daley as Dr. Sweets. Patricia Belcher as AUSA Julian is also good.

I'll keep watching as I like the concept. I just wish it more international like the books. You can't have everything.

It's time to get smushy!

Warning: Spoilers
Hi BonesBooth podcast, English Jan here again.

Greetings from across the pond.

I feel it's always a bit odd when shows do seasonal episodes. It always feels a little contrived to me. I guess it's because they are filmed out of the season that they represent.

I'm forever thankful to Miss Caroline Julian's Puckish side for gifting us that Mistletoe kiss. The Nine stars are for that alone.

Another highlight of this episode was the look of wonder on Booth and Bone's faces when walking into the dead Santa's apartment.

But of course, it is the Jail Christmas tree scene that completely steals the show. But that fake snow, oh dear.

Christmas Gifts

This was an excellent episode and all the fans of Booth and Brennan got a special gift when watching this episode. It's a first for this non-couple, and the aftermath is about as great as the event!

Booth and Bones work together to figure out who killed Santa Clause. Really, it was a no-brainer...

Then Bones shows her love for her father when arranging a special Christmas for her family with a little help from Carolyn. It's Carolyn who asks for the little "first" for the non-couple that leads us to our special surprise.

And, of course, Booth would do anything to make Brennan's day special. Just wait!

Thanks for the gum Warning: Spoilers
The kiss alone gives it a 10/10. If they had included the full, unedited kiss, it's 100/10, but whatever, I'll settle for pausing the episode and going into YouTube to find the deleted scene. It's also a cute episode between Max and Brennan. Everything with Parker is just adorable, especially when he goes up to a random cop just because he wants to see his dad. Like father, like son I guess? The actual murder is a little confusing, like I'm still not even sure that Jerry Russo did it, but whatever, the kiss makes the entire episode worth it. I do think that it was kind of wrong of Caroline, but it's okay simply because she knew that they wanted to, they just didn't have an excuse.

"Santa myth is based on blackmail; be good or you won't get any presents"

Warning: Spoilers
Booth has an early Xmas present for Bones, a dead guy in a sewer. Someone killed the numero uno Santa of the temp agency, Kris Kringle. The sniffing of each temp Santa's butt tells us who the killer is. The gang of Santas agree the killer is a disgrace to the uniform and angrily sing "you'd better watch out" at him.

Last week we got a cheek kiss, this week we get a full-on lip kiss that lasts for a whole flotilla of steamboats and even includes a mid-kiss exchange of chewing gum. Brennan says it was like kissing her brother, but considering she could barely put together a coherent sentence afterwards, I think she may have been downplaying that a bit.

Gotta Love It

I guess if Christmas is magic, as explained by Sweets, an episode that is far fetched and literally impossible, ends up working just fine. A man immersed in the whole Santa thing is murdered and found in a rain gutter in an alley. Since much of this is tongue in cheek, there are all kinds of jokes surrounding his death. The lab works its own magic. The main plot is about Brennan's father and her brother (along with his family) who are in jail. It is her father's wish that they could have a real Christmas. This is accomplished by taking a truck packet and turning it into an apartment where everyone can be together. One of the key scenes involves Booth kissing Brennan (a condition for the party taking place). It's a sweet story that got me a little choked up.

As Nietzche famously almost said, "Santa is dead and we killed him." This episode is probably one of the few glimmers of the sappy Bones episodes that fill the later seasons. We're definetly not to the extent of "Bones doesn't like her new intern" but this is basically "Bones wants to have a perfect Christmas".

I find it interesting that Kris Kringle's past is just never explained. We don't get someone saying "yeah he was a Dutch deer farmer who began having revelations and visions after being kicked by one of his deer". Santa's just dead in this episode.

This episode also shows Booth's petty side. He isn't completely assholish but in the beginning he feels a bit like a child. He does man up by the end, though.

I only wrote this review for the Nietzche joke by the way.

Warning: Spoilers
Santa in a sewer is quite festive lol. Christmas and skeletons do go together has noone seen A Nightmare Before Christmas? Oh wow TomKat and Suri took me back. "A Yuletide gathering of the Brennan criminal element," yesss Caroline so hilarious. Sweets is just adorable in his elf hat. Sniffing Santa butts isn't a job I'd want. Woohoo the first kiss! Even if it was blackmailed out of them by Ms. Julian lol. Awww the ending was so sweet of Booth.
