All it takes is one shot.

'Surprise (2020)' is a short film told in a single take (achieved without the use of digital stitching) about an assassin who breaks into his target's house and prepares to do his work. The piece achieves a relatively strong sense of atmosphere, building suspense as its protagonist progresses towards his goal. Of course, it's all a lengthy set-up for its final gag (the eponymous surprise, of course). This joke is relatively successful, even though it is rather predictable. The actual ending could have been stronger, though; it just feels like something is missing. The piece is fairly lengthy for what it is, but it never feels overly slow and its competence keeps things constantly interesting. Its one-take nature definitely enhances the experience, even if it isn't completely necessary for the narrative. 7/10
