Not a particularly good show, but I've seen worse

Warning: Spoilers
Here we have the 2007 edition of the AVN Awards and you can call them the adult film industry's Oscars if you want to, even if there are crucial differences too of course. One would be that at approximately 100 minutes, it is already a longer edition compared to other years. The director and one of the writers was Gary Miller and he is really prolific with this event, contributed many other times too. There is also Jessica Drake, the female co-host, but the one who deserves a mention is Jim Norton in my opinion. It is not the first time he was part of an AVN Awards ceremony, but I actually liked him a lot. His comedy felt appropriate given the occasion and he definitely did not care about political correctness. I hope his inclusion here did not have any negative impact on his career. It's not unusual at all that they cast (stand-up) comedians to host this show and most of the time they are doing a good job, so I support this decision. He sure does here and maybe he is the main reason why I am not giving this project two stars out of ten, but two stars out of five. Most of his jokes were fairly funny. I will not spoil any of them for you because they are really among the highlights of the show and I am also glad how much screen time he had. If he wrote the material himself, then that would be even better. Okay, I will mention one joke I liked. He said something like he finally found a girlfriend and all he cared for in the morning when he woke up next to her was that he absolutely should not give her any money implying that he had a lot of contact with prostitutes before that. I thought it was hilarious. Probably does not sound that way when I explain it, but his timing and line delivery were really top-notch. I'd watch a show with him if he ever comes to Germany. But now back to this ceremony: With the hosts it is always a lot about them making fun of themselves and he delivered brilliantly from that perspective. Alright, enough about him. Other things I liked about the show were that this time they did not feel the need to really emphasize how important their branch is and it was just easy fun most of the time the way it should be. It's always difficult if they take themselves too seriously and with that I do not only mean the AVN Awards, but shows, films and series in general. There were even two or three little comedic clips starring adult film actors that were nicely done.

One of those included Sasha Grey and I must say I really adore her. I think she is as stunning as it gets and for good reason she is one of not too many adult film actors who managed a tolerable career in the non-adult film industry too. She was nominated in the newcomer category or so I believe, but lost. This is one category that is always a bit of a highlight with the AVN Awards. It's also kinda interesting the BAFTAs and many others have it, but the Oscars don't. Anyway, what else can I say about these over 1.5 hours? Oh yes, there were more non-adult film people in here than usual. I think somebody from Howard Stern's team was around to give an awards and another male with him who was not an adult film actor. There was of coruse the band as usual, musical guests as they are called here on imdb, but I must admit this time I did not know them. I thought their performance wasn't too great anyway and when the lead singer started rambling, it was one of the weakest moments of the night. Oh yeah, Criss Angel was around too and he made a dress disappear, certainly the biggest name of the night if we don't count Kiss' Gene Simmons (or maybe even if we do count him), who received an award? What? Why? I don't even try to understand. There, however, you see as well that all those who were a part of this show, but not in adult films were males and that I do not like too much. Would have been pretty cool if they had gotten perhaps a female too who did not act in porn, not as if there is anything wrong with it. Honestly, everybody has watched it at some point, some more, other less, don't even try to deny it, but then again I guess the likes of Ellen deGeneres etc. would not want to be a part of this show because of the role of women in the adult film industry. Le me tell one thing to everybody who thinks so: Women make a lot more money than men if they act in this kind of movies. Stop saying adult film actress give women a bad name. It's a very stuck-up and prude statement. Okay, let's not elaborate too much on this controversial issue now. I just want to say another positive thing here, namely that I felt the winners, nominees and just all the females who were shown that night were more beautiful and stunning than during other AVN Awards Shows and that is pretty cool. Two examples would be Kimberly Kane, who definitely pulled off that indie look 100%, and Janine Lindemulder (or just Janine) who looked really desirable and hot and not only for her age. Also really liked her tattoos. I also thought it was a positive aspect that this time they did not make out too often when the camera shows the audience or even flash their boobs or genitals etc. This was also more common during other editions and I don't like it that much. Still I do not know too much about the industry and also did not care much for who wins (except Sasha, ho also delivered during that little magnet skit), so I cannot give this one a positive recommendation. Always nice though to see Randy Spears and Ron Jeremy. The latter as making fun of his long career in the industry here. Surely it will be a sad day if he dies, but hey he will probably die a very happy men thanks to all the adorable women he had sex with. One negative, my biggest (no pun intended!), criticism here is for the actual awards though. or how they are presented. I saw that there are really many nominees in each category and while it is nice to show them the recognition like that, it is also a bit pointless if they have 15 nominees, but only mention five during the show. Not acceptable and pretty disrespectful to those who are excluded. This would be one area I suppose where they could change something in order to convince me that this event deserves a thumbs-up and positive recommendation. As for now, I am not willing to give it yet because this show did not really get me motivated to check out more adult films. Watch something else unless you are really a gerat fan of the industry.
