"Child's Play" occupies a unique space in the decade-long slasher wave of the '80s. The brainchild of writer Don Mancini, the original 1988 film has developed into a highly successful franchise spanning six sequels, a remake, and an ongoing TV series. That success was never guaranteed upon its release, however.
While "Halloween" formed the blueprint for the modern slasher film upon its release in 1978 -- proving the financial potential for low-budget horror movies and leading to a big boom across the next decade -- the slasher genre had been on the wane by the time "Child's Play" hit the screens. Take the "Halloween" franchise itself for instance. Between 1981 and 1988, the first three "Halloween" sequels made more at the box office than the original 1978 film, but only if you put them all together.
Thankfully, Mancini looked to 1984's "A Nightmare on Elm Street," which had replaced "Halloween" as the new model for slasher films,...

The last time Jason Voorhees slashed onto the screen, Barack Obama had just taken office as president, Michael Jackson was still alive, and Scream was only a trilogy. While we await the “Crystal Lake” prequel series from Peacock, I was fortunate enough to experience the first six Friday the 13th movies back-to-back on the big screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s Friday the 13th Murder-thon in Brookline, Ma on January 13.
The event was similar to last year’s A Nightmare on Elm Street all-night marathon. This time, however, only half the franchise was screened since Friday has nearly double the amount of films.
While Friday the 13th may not shine right out of the gate in the same way Elm Street or Halloween did, it’s the most consistent of the major franchises. As such, I look at it as cinematic comfort food. Allow me to run through my long night at Camp Blood…...

The Nightmare on Elm Street series is iconic in the world of horror. Wes Craven created a villain so unique and entertaining that Freddy Krueger will always go down as a fan favorite. The series has made over 300 million (adjusted for inflation then its over 600 million), so naturally, executives want to milk the franchise for everything it’s worth. Cue to A Nightmare on Elm Street remake in 2010. Before her Oscar nominations for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Carol, Rooney Mara starred in the 2010 reboot. Unfortunately, A Nightmare on Elm Street wasn’t met with the

Seven entries deep into its franchise, "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" not only brought Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) back for more slicing and dicing, but the dream demon had more agency than previously allowed. A more menacing antagonist than he was in Craven's 1984 original "A Nightmare on Elm Street," this Freddy reaches his bladed glove beyond Elm Street and the screen itself to wink at jaded audiences who, by 1994, are genre experts.
"New Nightmare" is cognizant of the movies and of Freddy as a character; "Elm Street" heroine Heather Langenkamp and Craven play themselves, reckoning with the films that...

Hello, everyone! We’re back after a brief hiatus to give you a look at the horror and sci-fi headed home this week on home media. As it turns out, the month of August’s releases are starting off on a quiet note, as we have two titles getting the 4K treatment this Tuesday—Dario Argento’s Tenebrae and Flatliners from Joel Schumacher—and then a handful of indie horror arriving on both Blu-ray and DVD: Scream at the Devil, Paranormal Devil, The Farm, and Joker’s Poltergeist.
Flatliners 4K
Some Lines Shouldn’T Be Crossed.
Known for his impressively eclectic filmography and for helping to launch the careers of several young Hollywood stars of the 80s and 90s, Joel Schumacher tackles the existential question that, at one time or another, haunts us all: what awaits us after we die?

This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4 and Scream (2022).
A swimming pool boils and beer cans spontaneously explode. What started as a harmless suburban party ends in bedlam. Teens rush away in a panic, trampling both the living and the dead, fleeing the flames that threaten to consume them. With the light from the blaze illuminating his scarred face, Freddy Krueger raises his arms toward the mass huddled before him and proudly declares, “You are all my children now.”
These words, spoken by Robert Englund’s Freddy Krueger in 1985’s A Nightmare on Elm Street II, reflect the state of pop culture in the 1980s. Freddy was everywhere, not just in our nightmares and cinema screens. Despite his horrid appearance and murderous proclivities, Freddy became one of the decade’s true pop culture icons, moving off the movie screen to appear on t-shirts, lunch boxes, and 1-900 numbers. Halsey's tour is living up to its powerful title. The singer delivered a bold message in support of Roe v. Wade during the opening night of Love and Power Tour on May 17 in West Palm Beach, Fla.. During the song "Nightmare"—which is dedicated to young women—a video played for the crowd sharing various statistics related to abortion rights. "Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures more than 99 perfect safe in fact performed today," the message began in a clip captured by Twitter user Vic @Stageworks. Halsey's new tour comes with a message. The singer kicked off their Love and Power Tour on May 17 in West Palm Beach, Fl, and during a passionate performance of "Nightmare," a screen displayed footage from pro-choice protests, followed by various statistics about dwindling abortion access in the nation. This comes two weeks after Politico leaked a draft opinion offering insight into the Supreme Court's motion to overturn Roe v. Wade.
The statistics that appeared on the screen varied from a fact about the safety of abortion as a medical procedure to the lack of abortion clinics in a growing number of states: "There are now 16 states where 95 of counties do not have an abortion clinic." The presentation also drew attention to higher maternal mortality rates for Black women. Halsey then screamed into the microphone, "So save me your f*cking prayers."

Following the success of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho in 1960-61, there was – forgive me – a “mad” rush to cash in on that film’s coattails. On one side of the pond, U.S. based pastiches of Psycho would come courtesy of Shlock-horror maestro William Castle. The gimmicky producer would rush out the psychological-thriller Homicidal in 1961 and, a bit later - and more famously - with Joan Crawford in Straiht- Jacket (1964). In England, Hammer Film Productions, riding high due to their reimagining of the classic “Universal” monsters, would likewise bring to the screen four psych-thrillers of similar temperament: Paranoiac and Maniac in 1963, Hysteria and Nightmare in 1965.
One of the connecting threads of this quartet of Hammer efforts were that all scenarios had been dutifully scribed by their “house writer” of sorts, Jimmy Sangster. In his entertaining autobiography Do You Want it Good or Tuesday?...

Prepare yourselves, Stranger Things fans—there's a new big bad on the block. When season four of the Netflix hit returns on May 27, the town of Hawkins, Indiana, will be introduced to a dastardly creature that's darker than anything it's ever seen before. It's time to meet Vecna. Named after a character from Dungeons & Dragons, Vecna is a former human who mutated into a monster because of exposure to the Upside Down. Vecna lives in the attic of the Creel House, which will be a major setting for this season. Victor Creel, who will be played by Nightmare on Elm Street legend Robert Englund, once lived in Creel House. After a serious of...

Coachella Night 2 was, by many accounts, dominated by the festival’s youngest and oldest performers.
Headliner Billie Eilish, 20, delivered what was deemed a strong, history-making performance as the festival’s youngest-ever headliner.
On the other end of the spectrum was the shirtless 68-year old Danny Elfman, who played half a dozen Oingo Boingo songs — many for the first time since the 1980s — as well as high-octane versions of his film and TV work. The latter included an “unhinged hardcore remake” of his Simpsons theme, the Spider-Man main title, “Breakfast Machine” from Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, “Ice Dance/The Grand Finale” from Edward Scissorhands, “Alice’s Theme” from Alice in Wonderland as well as his Batman theme and “Jack’s Lament/This Is Halloween/What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
At the outset, Elfman promised “a strange little show.” But launching a guitar-heavy assault on Oingo Boingo tunes such as “Only a Lad,...

After viewing horror for decades (watch yer tongue), it just dawned on me how little truck international pictures – especially low budget horror – hold for purity of subgenre. Case in point: Mexico’s Cemetery of Terror (1985); a film set up as a Halloween clone, except Michael is a serial killer Satanist, and then it becomes a zombie film, and a kid’s flick that’s also really gory. All this, and Hugo Stiglitz to boot! They’re not wrong, of course; why have less genres when you can have more? It’s also stupidly fun.
Released in July Stateside with a homeland release the following December, Cemetery of Terror all but came and went, and I don’t even remember this thing in video stores.
But enough about VHS statistics from the ‘80s; let’s talk about this ultimately somewhat unique batfuckery of a film: As every horror should, we open...

Told in real-time across one (seemingly) unbroken shot, Beth de Araújo’s Soft & Quiet is perhaps the most provocative film to screen at SXSW this year. If it doesn’t quite fit the bill as a traditional horror film, that doesn’t mean there isn’t terror lurking under its surface. Speaking after the screening, de Araujo said her intention is to have the audience witness a hate crime play out in real-time. The film is much more—it’s a political indictment of the kind of frank, racist conversations that can play out amongst a group of like-minded (awful) individuals who are careful to moderate their tone. It’s the kind of wink, wink, nod, nod, coded language used to pull moderate voters into your cause—be it a politician in a sweater vest or a soccer mom in Target is saying it, is it that bad?...

Hello, everyone! This week’s Blu-ray and DVD offerings are quite an eclectic bunch, as we have a few recent titles coming out on Tuesday, but we also have a few classic horrors from Mexico finally getting a release, which is pretty darned cool. In terms of the newer horrors, Guillermo del Toro’s masterpiece Nightmare Alley is heading home to various formats, and if you missed it when it was airing, now you can finally catch up on the Dexter: New Blood revival this week as well. As mentioned, Indicator is showing some love to two classic horror movies from Mexico—La Llorona and The Phantom of the Monastery—on Blu-ray this week, and Richard Elfman’s Modern Vampires is getting the HD treatment, too.

Hello, dear readers! As time marches on, that means we have another bunch of horror and sci-fi home media releases making their debut on Tuesday, and there are some genuinely fun movies, both new and old, featured in this week’s offerings. For all you lycanthropes out there, you’ll definitely want to pick up Arrow Video’s brand-new Limited Edition 4K release of An American Werewolf in London, or if you’re more in the mood for a classic chiller, then you should check out Scream Factory’s Blu-ray for Nightmare. In terms of more recent horror titles, both The Boy Behind the Door and John and the Hole are headed home on multiple formats, and for those of you looking for something a bit more sci-fi, Project Gemini from Well Go USA should do the trick.

For Guillermo del Toro, the 2022 Oscars are already a living “Nightmare.”
While accepting the Filmmaking Achievement Award at the Hollywood Critics Association Awards on February 28, the “Nightmare Alley” director called out the Academy’s decision to pre-tape eight categories ahead of the March 27 ceremony.
“If any year was the year to think about it, this is not the year not to hear their names live at the Oscars. This is the year to sing and do it live,” del Toro said in his speech. “2021 was a fucking great year for movies.”
The categories that will be pre-recorded include documentary short, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound; at this stage, the awards will be doled out at 4 p.m., before the ceremony, and then integrated into the broadcast.

Filmmaking is a risky business (and not the kind that involves Tom Cruise). For every successful film under an actor or filmmaker's belt, there's bound to be an equally less successful one. Sometimes the actor and the material aren't a great match. Sometimes the execution of an idea doesn't live up to its intent. And sometimes a film starts off on the wrong foot and only goes downhill; look at what happened to "Last Action Hero"!
Released in 1993, "Last Action Hero" was carrying the star power of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was coming off of a box office hit with "Terminator 2: Judgement Day"; Shane Black, who...

Surprise, surprise. Yes, I’m back with a WWE Monday Night Raw review. Why? As Searchlight buyers find Sundance films for Disney streamer Hulu, Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” will expand to about 1,100 screens this weekend — with 900 of them showing the film in black-and-white.
This version saw strong reactions in multiple showings in Los Angeles and New York, but the color film proved to be a box-office disappointment with $9.7 million in after five weeks in theaters.
The black-and-white screenings included sold-out shows with appearances by del Toro and lead Bradley Cooper. Word of this alternative version was first revealed when the director spoke to IndieWire’s Eric Kohn last month as part of our Awards Spotlight video series.
Del Toro has told the press that he lit his film as if it were black-and-white, like 20th Century Fox’s 1947 original film noir starring Tyrone Power. This presentation, “Nightmare Alley: Visions of Darkness and Light” will play while the color version remains in around 300 theaters.

Searchlight’s “Nightmare Alley” takes place mostly in 1939-41, but its sensibility is contemporary. It’s a time-capsule movie: If future generations want to know what life was like in the 21st century, tell them to see this film.
“Nightmare,” written by Guillermo Del Toro (who directs) and Kim Morgan, depicts a world of liars and charlatans who manipulate the truth to gain wealth and/or power. And the general public is surprisingly gullible. As Lilith (Cate Blanchett) says to Stan (Bradley Cooper), “You don’t fool people, Stan, they fool themselves.”
Del Toro tells Variety, “We are in a moment of great anxiety, post-discourse, post-truth, almost as if we, as a society, are going through a psychotic episode. Everybody curates the reality of the world, every piece of information, to fit their own ‘truth. And I mean everybody; this is not about a particular person or party. This is...

Billy Wilder's 1959 film "Some Like It Hot" is about musicians in disguise, gangsters, and music, but really it's all about sex. In the film, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon play a pair of down-on-their-luck musicians - of the saxophone and upright bass - who witness a gangland slaying and have to go on the run. They hide out - in drag - within an all-female traveling music troupe. The bulk of the film is about how Curtis and Lemmon narrowly evading detection, while Curtis also disguises himself as a Cary Grant-like millionaire to romance the troupe's lead attraction Sugar Kane played by the...

It’s always been difficult to describe what a phenomenon 1996’s Scream was to anyone who wasn’t around to properly experience its debut for themselves. Scream wasn’t just the movie that helped show that horror films could still be blockbusters; it was the movie that gave a new generation of horror fans something to proudly call their own. For over 25 years, we’ve been praising Scream for its intelligence, its cast, its scares, and its infinite rewatchability.
More than anything though, Scream is praised for its “meta” commentary and the ways it both mocked and celebrated the entire genre. At a time when Gen X cynicism and the rise of video stores left so many horror fans of a certain age feeling like they had seen it all before, Scream boldly invoked the names of the most popular horror franchises while skewering their clichés with the ruthless efficiency...

“A young man’s heroic actions and resultant celebrity status bring unwanted consequences for the lives of the people he loves the most. But his efforts to change that only result in a dangerous, unstable situation that may threaten them all. With the help of two strangers with whom he shares more than he cares to admit, he realizes that only a supreme personal sacrifice may alter the course of events.”
Sounds like a hell of a story, huh? Perhaps a psychological thriller, a wartime melodrama, or even a tragic medical drama. Something with urgency, strong themes of friendship, loyalty, and responsibility, and perhaps an emotional climax that will send audiences out of the theater both inspired and saddened. In other words, the kind of movie that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has often showered with Oscars in the past.

Halsey has released an extended edition of their recent album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power, which features two new tracks. The songs, Nightmare Reprise” and “People disappear here,” join the originals for a 16-track release.
“The extended version of Iichliwp is out now featuring the new and moody ethereal goodness that is ‘People Disappear Here’ plus a @nineinchnails reimagined version of ‘Nightmare,'” the singer noted on Twitter. The new songs follow live renditions of tracks from the album, including “Nightmare,” which Halsey released over the holidays.

Bradley Cooper is an established awards magnet, with eight nominations in the past nine years. Four of those have been in the acting category — for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), “American Hustle” (2013), “American Sniper” (2014) and “A Star Is Born” (2018). This year he has an opportunity to land three more nominations.
The 46-year-old actor delivers two powerhouse performances, both worthy of recognition. His first comes as Jon Peters — the producer, hairdresser and ex-boyfriend of Barbra Streisand — in Paul Thomas Anderson’s coming-of-age comedy “Licorice Pizza” from MGM/United Artists Releasing.
His other turn comes as Stanton Carlisle, the ambitious and manipulative carny in Guillermo del Toro’s neo-noir thriller “Nightmare Alley” from Searchlight Pictures, on which Cooper also is a producer.
Will this year finally give him a long-overdue Oscar?
It seems like ages ago that Cooper was just the jerk boyfriend in “Wedding Crashers” (2005) and the Wolfpack leader in “The Hangover” (2009). In “Licorice,...

If Guillermo del Toro’s new film, Nightmare Alley, doesn’t feel like a new film, that’s completely by design. The Oscar-winning writer/director wanted “Nightmare Alley” to take on the 1940s sensibilities of the novel he was adapting, including set design, costumes, and even the way that his stars — Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett — spoke […]

Willem Dafoe is having a moment. Four of them, actually. With this weekend marking the release of both Guillermo del Toro’s cynically bleak noir, Nightmare Alley, as well as the high-flying adventures of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the four-time Oscar nominated actor is at polar ends of the cinematic landscape: a chilly and cerebral awards-bound prestige drama with an Oscar winning auteur, and a superhero movie thrill ride that sees him reprise his arguably most popular role after nearly 20 years—the Green Goblin.
And that’s just two of the four electric flavors he’s offering this fall when one considers his recent supporting, and memorable, work in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch and Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter. Yet when we sit down to discuss things with the thespian, he reflects that his variety of roles is everything acting is about.

Seventh grade is ending soon: Hulu’s middle school comedy PEN15 will end after its second season, with the final episodes debuting this Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The decision to end the show reportedly comes from stars/creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, who play 13-year-old versions of themselves on the series. Hulu wanted to do more seasons and is leaving the door open if the duo wants to return to the show later on down the road.

Exclusive: It has been nearly two full years since Guillermo del Toro started shooting Nightmare Alley. But now, finally, four years to the day since The Shape of Water’s US release, the cast and crew are preparing to gather in New York City for the movie’s global premiere at Alice Tully Hall Wednesday night. A simultaneous premiere will happen in Los Angeles and in other cities, and the events are taking place in association with Film at Lincoln Center, TIFF and the Telluride Film Festival, a nod to the disruption that meant Nightmare would not be able to complete the same festival circuit that had started Shape on its journey to becoming a four-time Oscar winner.
That disruption, of course, was a global pandemic that shut down production in March 2020. While Nightmare Alley became the first major Canadian production to return, it would take six months to do so.

This Halloween, pop star Billie Eilish wore a patchwork dress and painted stitch scars to sing in front of a sold-out crowd at LA’s Banc of California stadium. The song wasn’t hers, but a Danny Elfman composition from the 1993 soundtrack to animated feature Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. ‘Sally’s Song’ is a broken-hearted lament written for a broken character – a Frankensteinian stitched-together rag doll brought to life by an evil scientist in the town of Halloween.

It's rare for iconic films to have achieved such status without some sort of controversy coloring their legacies. Such is the case with "Scarface," the 1983 crime drama starring legendary actor Al Pacino as the ruthless Tony Montana. The tale of the fictional Cuban immigrant turned violent drug lord has become culturally synonymous with the idea of obtaining the American Dream at all costs, revered by rappers, suburbanites, and edgy middle schoolers alike. While the passage of time can make it easy to forget, "Scarface" caused such a major uproar during its heyday that the film couldn't even begin production without intervention from government officials.

Black Friday, every retail worker’s nightmare. Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we debate whether “Tick, Tick… Boom!’s” Andrew Garfield will crash the Best Actor category.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! I’m feeling the bohemian lifestyle as it were on this Friday, so what better time than now to circle back to Best Actor. We’ve kind of tabled this category, what with Will Smith seemingly so comfortably ahead for “King Richard.” (He remains the favorite according to our odds). But I’ve seen at least two performances this week alone that could maybe make a strong case to contend here — specifically Andrew Garfield in “Tick, Tick… Boom!” The directorial debut from Lin-Manuel Miranda is out in select theaters now before hitting Netflix next week (the same day Smith’s crowd-pleaser...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
As Hollywood grapples with the accidental shooting death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, I had the chance to talk with “Squid Game” writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk about the safety precautions taken on the set of his intensely violent series. “We of course have a prop master, but also in Korea, we’re not really a gun-owning country, so only the police can have and own a gun,” he said. “Because of that, bullets are not really easily as distributed as they are maybe here, so there’s a very low, low possibility of any safety issues happening on set.”
In fact, he said, “in my life, I have never seen a real bullet. I have only seen them in the movies.”
Park Hae-soo said, “I felt so sad about [the ‘Rust’] tragedy. I just want to relay my condolences.”

"We have to stop Umbrella!" Sony Pictures has revealed an extra 60-second trailer for the new Resident Evil franchise reboot called Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. We posted the first official trailer just last month, but this "Nightmare" trailer gives us a better look at all the gore and creatures and craziness going on in this town. Set in 1998, this thrilling new Resident Evil origin story explains the secrets of the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City. It follows a group of survivors in the city who band together and try to take down Umbrella and stop this evil before it gets out. This new movie stars Kaya Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper, Avan Jogia, with Donal Logue and Neal McDonough. There's some seriously disgusting shots in here, which is the whole point - it's going to be one bloody, nasty Resident Evil movie with all the R-rated gore they can pack in.

Billie Eilish had herself in stitches — the drawn-on kind — as she very solemnly voiced the barely-sewed-up Sally in two weekend live-to-film performances of the music for “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” bringing new life to Danny Elfman’s perennially undead L.A. Halloween tradition.
Being revived as a concert event for the first time in three years — but this time over two nights at L.A.’s newish Banc of California Stadium, a bigger venue than the shows’ previous home at the Hollywood Bowl — the “Nightmare Before Christmas” shows featured Elfman reviving his lead role of Jack Skellington (and a brief turn as the supporting character Barrel), Paul Reubens and Ken Page reviving their original 1993 turns as Lock and Oogie Boogie, and “Weird Al” Yankovic doing Shock for the first time.
Naturally, though, some of the audience only had eyes for the young pop superstar joining Yankovic as a newcomer to the occasional concert franchise,...
