Cute documentary

As a biology professor, I watch a lot of nature documentaries to unwind. Basically all nature documentaries focus on the male perspective, such as following a male while he attempts to find females, his courtship displays, or fighting other males, while females come and go as bit characters with unexamined intentions.

Fierce Queens is the first nature documentary that I have come across from a female perspective: it follows females and explains what she looks for in a mate, how she tests males to determine if they have the qualities she looks for, and why all this this is important; the amount of energy/resources, time, and awareness she must invest into raising offspring, etc. It was refreshing to see how female-led societies function by smaller females banding together against larger males.

The before and after commentary from Reese Witherspoon is a little cutesy and trite, probably more appealing to pre-teens, but once you accept it for what it is, the documentary is overall very informative and enjoyable.
