CNN, meet Sin City.
As CNN appears poised to expand its original series offerings, the cable channel has set its next series: Vegas: The Story of Sin City.
The series will premiere Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10 p.m., and will explore “the past seventy years of America’s cultural maturation through the lens of this unique city, featuring the entertainment acts, the visionary entrepreneurs, the infamous mafia figures, and the colorful political history that put it on the map,” per CNN.
That will include interviews with Vegas icons like Wayne Newton and Paul Anka, as well as journalists, showgirls, and historians. The series is produced for CNN by Bungalow Media+ Entertainment.
“Vegas is another of our acclaimed CNN Original Series that brings new life and color to major stories and events in our collective history,” said Amy Entelis, executive VP of talent for CNN Originals, and creative development for CNN Worldwide.

CNN’s CEO Mark Thompson laid out a strategy for the news organization, focusing on integrating linear TV and digital news units, and boosting its presence and innovation on smart phones and other mobile devices.
In a memo to employees sent today (read it below), Thompson called his plans a “true multimedia strategy,” including the combination of the leadership of the international, domestic and digital news operations.
Virginia Moseley has been named to a new role as executive editor of CNN and Mike McCarthy, who had been general manager of CNN International, will be managing editor. “As far as possible we want single integrated teams to cover stories for all platforms,” he wrote.

Exactly one year after CNN canceled his popular travel food series Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, the actor will hit the Autostrade once more, this time for National Geographic.
The Disney-owned nonfiction content company has ordered a new 10-part docuseries called Tucci — The Heart of Italy. The series bears a striking similarity to his late CNN series, following Tucci “as he unlocks the distinct flavors that define each region and discovers the rich versatility of Italy through those he meets along the journey.”
Tucci’s Salt Productions and BBC Studios’ Factual Productions are producing the series for National Geographic, with production set to begin next month.
“National Geographic is all about adventure and exploration, and I am honored to take viewers once again to explore Italy through the lens of food,” said Tucci in a statement. “In Italy’s many distinct regions there is always something new to discover and...

Exclusive: Stanley Tucci is continuing his Italian adventures. However, the actor is moving from CNN to National Geographic with his latest travel docuseries.
Nat Geo has ordered Tucci – The Heart of Italy (w/t), a ten-part series. It comes after the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network CNN canceled Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, which won two Emmys for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special, after two seasons.
At the time, Tucci was confident that he’d find a new home for his adventures and he has.
The series is produced by BBC Studios’ recently formed new unit, Specialist Factual Productions, and Tucci’s own Salt Productions, which he recently founded with Lottie Birmingham. It marks Salt’s first series and production starts in January.

Since the TV academy officially established a distinction between informational and documentary programs in 2013, the former genre’s Emmy category – which eventually became known as Best Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special – has been dominated by multi-winners Anthony Bourdain, Leah Remini, and Stanley Tucci. As the presenter and co-executive producer of “Searching for Italy” (which is in need of a home after being dropped by CNN), Tucci is currently seeking his third consecutive win in the category along with an even mix of old and new co-nominees.
Best Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special differs from most Primetime Emmys in that it is a non-competitive area award that is given to any nominee that earns the approval of 90% of voters in the academy’s documentary peer group. This means that the five programs in the 2023 lineup are not vying for a single trophy and could all potentially prevail. However, given the fact...

This year, the Emmy nominees for outstanding hosted nonfiction series include Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (2021 and 2022’s winner) and Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi. It’s fair to say these food travelogues owe their entrée into awards contention to Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, which dominated the category in the 2010s and brought credibility to food programming in a field that had previously overlooked it.
CNN’s Parts Unknown, which won 12 Primetime Emmys over 12 seasons — including six for outstanding informational series (as the category was known from 2013 to 2019) — was Bourdain’s fourth series following A Cook’s Tour and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel, and Food Network’s The Layover. All were travel shows presented through the prism of food, but in Parts Unknown, Bourdain — an executive chef at New York’s Brasserie Les Halles who rose to fame for his tell-all memoir Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in...

Some people only get one chance to run CNN. Amy Entelis is about to embark on her second.
The veteran news executive was one of three who took the reins at the Warner Bros. Discovery news outlet when Jeff Zucker, the previous chief, was forced out in February of last year after acknowledging a romantic relationship with Allison Gollust, once CNN’s chief marketing officer. Now Entelis will be part of a new trio leading the news giant after the Wednesday departure of former CEO Chris Licht.
The challenges facing CNN have not diminished. Entelis will guide CNN’s news operations along with Virginia Moseley, recently named to oversee editorial operations, and Eric Sherling, recently appointed head of U.S. programming. David Leavy, a longtime Zaslav lieutenant who was named chief operating officer at CNN last week, will oversee business activities. The entire group must keep CNN moving forward as...

The Producers Guild of America announced on Wednesday that it will be holding its 35th Annual Producers Guild Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on February 25, 2024.

CNN unveiled three new non-fiction series at the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront, giving a glimpse of its plans after the unit was greatly scaled back last year.
The projects include Columbia: The Final Flight (working title), which tells the story of the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. The series is a co-production of CNN Original Series, BBC and Mindhouse Productions, and it being distributed globally by BBC Studios.

Guy Fieri is rolling out “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” into a new Emmys category.
Food Network has successfully petitioned the Television Academy to move the long-running food reality series back to the outstanding structured reality category, where it will compete against other popular series such as “Love is Blind,” “Queer Eye” and “Shark Tank.” It had previously been submitted for hosted nonfiction series or special since 2020.

However, the Television Academy has denied its submission and moved the show to the outstanding talk series category, where it will face off against late-night hosts such as Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers.
The other eligible nominees for last year’s outstanding hosted nonfiction series or special — Netflix’s “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman,” Showtime’s “Vice” and winner “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” — will remain in the category for consideration.

Exclusive: The BBC and CNN are teaming up to mark 20 years since the Columbia space shuttle disaster.
The broadcasters will co-produce the documentary, working titled Columbia: The Final Flight, with production housed at Mindhouse, the company co-founded by Louis Theroux.
The show will tell the story of the 2003 tragedy, in which seven astronauts were killed after Columbia disintegrated as it reentered the Earth’s atmosphere over Texas.
The crew conducted 80 experiments during 16 days in orbit, but their shuttle broke apart after heat-resistant tiles on the left wing were damaged during lift-off from Cape Canaveral.
The BBC and CNN have previously collaborated on Race for the Vaccine, a Wingspan Productions film that took viewers inside efforts to create a Covid vaccine. The BBC also acquired CNN’s Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy.

Tom Cruise was honoured for his nearly three decades of work as a producer, and “ Everything Everywhere All at Once ” solidified its status as the frontrunner for the best picture Oscar by taking the top prize at Saturday night’s Producers Guild of America Awards.
“We love you! We love you!” another Oscar favorite and one of the film’s stars, Ke Huy Quan, shouted gleefully from the stage as Jonathan Wang and the other producers of the multiversal dramedy accepted the award for best theatrical motion picture.
The award has proven to be perhaps the best indicator for what will win the top honour at the Oscars, with four of the past five and 11 of the past 14 PGA winners going on to win best picture.
PGA wins by “ Coda ” last year and “ Nomadland ” in 2021 set each apart as frontrunners before winning best picture.

Chaos in February is a feeling generally relegated to relentless weather, Valentine’s Day nerves, and the typically intense Oscar circuit. But this year’s winter awards run has proven critical for a couple of TV shows, as they aim to solidify their chosen genre placement amid debate over where they really belong. Surprise, surprise: Saturday night’s PGA Award winners made a major impact, as “The Bear” and “The White Lotus” snagged key wins in the categories of Comedy and Drama, respectively
Yes, “The Bear” is a comedy series — at least, that’s how it’s been designated throughout the winter awards cycle and where it’s destined to run this summer at the 2023 Emmys. The DGA Awards, Critics Choice, Writers’ Guild, and more have all honored Christopher Storer’s half-hour original series in their Comedy categories, and the cast will compete for two SAG Awards Sunday night against the likes of “Abbott Elementary,...

On Saturday, the Producers Guild of America gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles to hand out the 2023 PGA Awards.
While the ceremony honors the achievements of producers across media, meaning awards were given out to series like “The White Lotus” and “The Bear,” the documentary “Navalny,” and animated feature “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” its theatrical film award, which was won by “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” is the one all eyes were on.
The Darryl F. In the room to accept were executive producers Jonathan Wang, Daniel Kwan, and Daniel Scheinert (the latter two also wrote and directed the hit multiversal dramedy from A24). “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best-produced film of 2022 at the Producers Guild Awards, which were held on Saturday evening in Los Angeles.
The freewheeling indie film won in a category that also included the formidable blockbusters “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Elvis” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The PGA had been a must-win awards show for “Top Gun,” and the fact that “Everything Everywhere” won is reminiscent of the low-budget “Coda” winning this award last year on its way to an unlikely Oscar Best Picture win.
The Producers Guild is also the only other awards show apart from the Oscars that uses the preferential or ranked-choice system of counting the votes in its top category. That system is designed to find a consensus choice, and the biggest question surrounding “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been whether it was too polarizing to win under that system.

The 34th Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The biggest award of the night, the Darryl F. The 2023 Producers Guild of America Award nominations stunned on Thursday with a shocking inclusion of the Brendan Fraser best-actor vehicle “The Whale” making the lineup, in addition to four sequels — “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Top Gun: Maverick.”
A24 led the tally for all movie studios with the Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” joining “The Whale” in best picture. The animation live-action hybrid “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” made the list of animated features, which also included “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” and “Turning Red.”
Rounding out the 10 films for best picture was “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “The Fabelmans” and “Tár.” The top award, the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, is a strong predictor for the best picture Oscar.

The box-office hits “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Top Gun: Maverick” have all been nominated for the top feature-film award by the Producers Guild of America, whose nominations championed commercial successes in a year in which the industry is hoping to get viewers back into theaters.
“Avatar” and “Top Gun” have passed 1 billion at the worldwide box office, while “Black Panther” has grossed more than 800 million, “Elvis” has made almost 300 million and “Everything Everywhere” is indie A24’s biggest hit ever at more than 100 million. Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie has released its first trailer, teasing its star-studded cast of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu and Issa Rae.
Director Gerwig’s forthcoming rom-com, based on the famous toy doll, stars Robbie as the titular Barbie and Gosling as Ken, Barbie’s boyfriend.
Earlier this summer, fans got an early look at Robbie and Gosling in costume after leaked on-set photos of the pair rollerblading in Venice Beach, Los Angeles, made the rounds on social media.
Ever since, things have been pretty lock and key about the film except for the names attached and Robbie’s latest promise that it will be “everything you ever dreamed of”.
Now, on Friday (16 December), audiences were treated to the first “epic” trailer of the movie.

CNN has scrapped one of its “most successful” original series, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, as part of the network’s larger cutbacks.
The cancellation comes a few months after the release of the second season of the Oscar-nominated actor’s food show, where he travels across Italy in search of the country’s secrets and best regional cuisine.
On Wednesday night (14 December), during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Tucci informed the host that “unfortunately, CNN has cancelled all of their original programming”.
“So hopefully we’ll end up on another streamer, network, we don’t know,” The Lovely Bones star said. “But yes, I have plans to do season three and more.”

Stanley Tucci is done searching Italy. At least for now.
The actor’s CNN show Searching for Italy has been canceled at the channel, part of a larger strategic change at the company.
CNN said in October that it would cut back on original programming produced by outside production companies. The decision was “based, in large part, on the ever-increasing cost of commissioning third-party premium content,” CNN CEO Chris Licht said in a statement at the time.
Tucci’s show is among the casualties, with Raw serving as producer on the program.
That being said, a source notes that Tucci also was an executive producer on the show, so he could work with the production partners to shop it elsewhere. In addition, Tucci is EP on Searching for Mexico, led by Eva Longoria, which will debut on CNN in 2023.

CNN is the new home of Eva Longoria‘s upcoming docuseries Searching for Mexico, which was originally planned to debut on CNN+ before the streaming service was scrapped following the Discovery and WarnerMedia merger earlier this year. According to Variety, Searching for Mexico is one of a new slate of original documentary projects and films expected to debut on CNN’s flagship cable outlet in 2023. The projects come from the network’s previous initiative that saw CNN partner with third-party production companies or independent filmmakers. Produced by Raw TV, the prod company behind the Emmy-winning Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, the six-part series follows Longoria as she travels Mexico exploring one of the most popular and arguably misunderstood global cuisines. From harvesting blue agave for tequila as the Aztecs once did to slow-cooking traditional mole sauce in Oaxaca, Longoria takes viewers into the many vibrant regions of Mexico to reveal its unique and colorful cuisines.

CNN unveiled its slate of series and films planned for 2023, as the original projects unit prepares to scale back and take production in house.
The lineup of original series includes Giuliani: What Happened to America’s Mayor?, debuting on Jan. 8, as well as United States of Scandal with Jake Tapper and another devoted to the history of Las Vegas. Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, and Mark Herzog also return with another in their “decades” projects, this one focusing on the 2010s.
But the lineup will look far different in coming years, as the network announced in October that it was pulling back on original series and films, ending collaborations with outside partners. Most of the projects on the slate were in the works before the decision was made.
Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, said in a statement, “Our CNN Original Series and CNN...

CNN’s senior vice president of original series program development, Jon Adler, is exiting the cable news network by the end of the year. The news comes after the media company announced it would be pulling back on original series and documentary content commissioned by outside partners.
Adler, who has been with CNN for a decade, helped launch the CNN’s original programming slate, having worked across 30 series like “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” and “United Shades of America.” He was promoted to this role in March, ahead of the debut and eventual discontinuation of CNN+.

Jon Adler, a senior vice president who had a hand in developing CNN’s slate of original series, is set to leave the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network at the end the year.
He has worked on more than 30 CNN series, including such programs as “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” “First Ladies,” “Colin Quinn: Red State Blue State,” “The History of Comedy,” “Chasing Life with Sanjay Gupta” and “Christiane Amanpour: Sex and Love Around the World.”
Yet CNN, facing budget cuts under its debt-laden corporate owner, intends to tamp down its ambitions in that area, relying largely on its own efforts rather than working with outside production entities. CNN is still slated to air six of its original series and six CNN Films in 2023.
Adler played a role in the growth of such efforts. He joined CNN in 2012, when the news operation was forming a division to tackle more documentary programming.

Friday was a “sad day for the documentary film world,” one filmmaker told IndieWire after hearing the news that CNN Films will scale back on original documentaries from outside partners. The strategy shift means more than losing a major buyer; for filmmakers it means the great documentary gold rush had a good run, but it’s now over.
CNN is far from the only platform to tighten its nonfiction belt; cost cutting measures have also come for Netflix, Amazon, and Peacock. However, CNN was one of the last bastions for hardcore, capital-d documentaries that aspired to more than true crime or “Tiger King.”
“What’s happening across the documentary universe that’s troubling is we’re seeing more of the prestige outlets that have been traditionally for filmmakers to speak their truth and speak their story, they’re starting to dwindle,” said one talent representative within the documentary world, who...

CNN will “no longer rely” on commissioning longform projects from outside partners, signaling that the news juggernaut will pull back on original documentary series and films like “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” and the critically hailed “Navalny.”
“Our long-term plan will no longer rely on commissioned projects with outside partners,” CEO Chris Licht wrote in a memo sent to staff on Friday. “This was a very difficult decision to make, and it was based, in large part, on the ever-increasing cost of commissioning third-party premium content. However, I want to be clear that longform content remains an important pillar of our programming.”
