Fabulous Production Values....
gbkimberley20 November 2020
...can't disguise the fact that this is starting to look a lot less like Star Trek and more like The Adventures of Michael Burnham. And that sucks big time.

From her whispered lines to the need for her character to cry in virtually every episode, the Burnham centric storylines are ruining a terrific show.

Seriously. Literally all of the other characters are more interesting and are better played.

This series would be much more successful and more popular if she were to meet an untimely end during a transporter malfunction.

whispers: no more tears and Michael please
rutger-845-63739721 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Burnham, because you never listen you are now banned from crying, whispering, close-ups on your over emotional face and mostly, that sad background music is now banned!

Also, the fact that your brought the concept of triangulation 900 in the future as nobody could ever figure out the burn or had time for it (btw that would result in 2 points of possible origin, you need 4 for 3D. The burn important? no, just take the risk of it happening again. All those ships like euhm, seedship etc flying around couldn't help while doing not much? Ok?

Did I mention the childish genius Wesley 2.0 kid with the reaaaally annoying thrill? No? Or the scenes with Tilly and the cat which took way too ling?

And to end the Burnham show, have her cry look knowingly sad, now zoom out and taste another cringe triggered bitter review I just had to drop. Don't Woke me up... please don't.

OMG. Please stop with all this whispering!!!

There is no one else in the room.

There is no one who really cares enough about you to eavesdrop.

What the hell is going on?

Are you really that much of an idiot?

Michael being Michael... again...
WKYanks20 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The new tech is pretty cool. Linus popping in and out was pretty funny throughout.

Admiral Vance dealing out assignments was good. Nice to see some other Star Fleet Captains. I think the choice to use Discovery as a quick response type asset is a smart one.

Burnham going rogue.... again...

This was both Saru's and Michael's fault. Hell, when Saru reported Michael insubordination to ADM Vance, he said Discovery was able to function without Michael for their assigned mission... why didn't he just let her go and do it? ... or at least ask the ADM for permission? Vance was right to give it to Saru a little at the end, but I'm not sure it should have been in front of Burnham. Saru was of course right to demote Michael... she had to know this was going to happen when she left. Is anything going to happen to her accomplice?

I thought the whole bit on the planet was done well. No real surprises, she helps Book, they escape, he gives her the "black box"... all is well. It really shows how short Michael is when she hugs Book.

The antennae on Andorians aid in balance. This guy had both lopped off and it didn't seem to affect him. I remember Shran bumping into stuff when he lost one.

At least this time Burnham's "rogueness" was fueled by her feelings for Book. She always seems to put the rush things in figuring out The Burn and restoring the almighty Federation... what's the rush again? If I hear "I spent every day for a year" blah, blah again...

I again enjoyed the dynamic between Stamets and Adira.

Yeah, this is the worst episode of Discovery this season... it isn't a bad episode, but not on par with the first 5 for sure. The Georgiou dilemma is intriguing but they need to get on with it. I'm still betting it was the glasses!!

I'm glad Book is back on Discovery. It appears that Michael is going to leave? She took her badge off after Saru demoted her.

Who will be the new #1?

Fun episode, lots of Disco-style and important Burnham arc
nickster0520 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Discovery is a show that always has a lot of fun exploring the different ways that a mystery comes together, and I'm really enjoying how the Burn is developing. As Michael becomes more concerned with it, she distances herself more from Starfleet, and that's a compelling parallel in my mind.

Interesting Andorian and Orion lore, a fun little adventure, and I always love Stamets plots. He's a good mentor.

The other reviewers love to call "filler" when they dislike an episode, and it's exhausting. Stories develop in different ways, and this was an essential element in Michael and Book's story. This was a blast. I'm loving this season.

Internet-Police23 November 2020
Seriously what the hell is wrong with her can she talk like a normal person? This Mary Sue is really getting on my nerves and at this rate I don't know if it'll last another season. this took everything there is about Star trek just ruined it they have no idea what the hell they're doing.

Good, bad & Ugly
Martipee28 November 2020
Brilliant storylines and back to actions, but continuing with its soapie essence. Weeping Senior Officers over being dusciplined and including their love when making decisions, and the continual whispering of character Michael Burnham. Starfleet is a military organization, yet officers act like its an episode of Days-of-our-lives. Great CGI and technology keeping up with the Star Trek DNA.

Classic Michael
doappel20 November 2020
Michael must be the most uninspired main character in a Star Trek series ever.

Always the same attitude initially, when she rebels. Always the same "empathic' reaction, when others react to her moods and unduly decisions.

And Sonequa adds poor performance, to maximize the effect of the bad writing and character development. She has just one set of facial expression for being competitive/rebellious and one for regret/acceptance. Rinse and repeat. I really wonder how she had managed to become on my favorite actors in TWD.

Shame, because the episode wasn't great otherwise, but without the unnecessary drama about Michael, it was pretty okay.

What's with all the crying?
buddrud-2719420 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously. I'm with some of the other reviewers here. It's always about Michael. At least they finally put everyone in the future where they should've been in the first place. I actually like this season much better than the first two. But the writing is getting idiotic again. 'Let me punish you, Michael, for disobeying orders, but I'm gonna cry about it because I love you so deeply'. And we're finally getting to know the other characters a bit more, but I still only remember the names of Michael and Saru (and Book. That one is just easy). I'm waiting for the red head to suddenly break out in a Jan Brady and say 'Michael Michael Michael. It's always about her'. Didn't Starfleet actually have discipline in the other shows and movies? Even the bad actors back then had some depth. I just don't feel these characters are likable. I want to. I'm watching this show out of obligation to Star Trek, something I've enjoyed since I was a kid. I still love all the characters from the old shows (except that last season of Voyager, that was awful). And again, the crying. Ease up. It's becoming a joke.

When Character Development bond with Action, Adorable, and Dramatic scenes...
wetmars21 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After receiving a message from Book, Burnham and Georgiou embark on a rogue mission to find him, leaving Saru to pick up the pieces with Admiral Vance. Meanwhile, Stamets forms an unexpected bond with Adira.

I must say, quite an underrated episode. Book is now developing his own character development arc, as well as Adria, although, she had okay scenes from here to there.

Loved the Grudge scenes, so adorable! Lol. Great humor here thanks to Philippa, what a total badass she is!

8/10.

A filler episode
branci24519 November 2020
A classic and somewhat boring "filler" episode that sets the stage for the rest of the season by connecting various storylines in a predictable way.

We need more fish guy
muchobliged19 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the conversation between Stamets and the symbiont girl, it felt sincere and genuine. Rare scenes like this make me wonder what this show could've been without Burnham as the main character. And what's with her constant whispering? No one else is whispering, it's not like she has to whisper to keep things private or anything like that, so why??? It's ridiculous. The running gag with the transporting fish-dude was okay, but why can't we have fish guy as the main protagonist for a change? I mean, who is this guy? Three seasons in and half of the cast we know next to nothing about, that's a serious problem. The biggest part of this episode was boring side quest and I'm getting tired of Philippa's incessant one liners. The main story didn't progress at all, no surprise there.

Put a red shirt on Burnham...
rsvp32119 November 2020
...out of mercy for the fans! A Borg assimilation is a good way to reset her part.

Her *laughably ridiculous* "whisper" acting has become such an annoying distraction that I ff through her screen time. I know it will contribute nothing.

The current state of this show is a mess!

Consequences Have Finally Arrived 900 Years In The Future
ObsessiveCinemaDisorder28 November 2020
Scavengers was a fun satisfying episode that delivers on last episode's tease that Michael Burnham is making a breakthrough learning about humility.

Once again Michael Burnham ignores Starfleet command and goes off gallivanting to her own whimsy, but this time the show follows through with actual consequences. This does not make Michael Burnham more appealing as a protagonist in any way. However, the show is much more watchable now that the writers are not behind the scenes pulling the strings to empower a narcissist to cynically appeal to the social justice demographic. The world of the Federation is instantly more believable when there isn't one officer always getting away with breaking the rules all the time. Consequences have finally arrived 900 years in the future.

Michelle Yeoh's Philippa Georgiou joins Burnham for a piece of the action and steals the entire episode. Having zero regard for diplomacy or Prime Directive, Georgiou even under false pretenses, proceeds to belittle every alien species around her, which is entertaining in an irreverent way.

Having grown up watching Michelle Yeoh as an action heroine jumping on motorcycles onto running trains, I am completely wide-eyed watching her as this anti-hero saying these sassy lines. Instead of wondering what stunt Yeoh is about to do next, I am now anticipating what kind of verbal venom is about to be spat out of Phillipa Georgiou's mouth onto some poor undeserved alien soul. I love it.

Scavengers also features a cool little sci-fi tribute. There's a future Starfleet captain named LeGuin, who looks exactly like sci-fi author Ursula K. LeGuin, writer of Tales of Earthsea.

On a final random note, personal transporters should be uninvented. They are so awkward in moments of galactic diplomacy and have taken away the courtesy of walking a world leader to a transporter pad for a farewell. People now just say goodbye, tap the button on their shirt, and immediately leave the host alone in the room.

The show has won me back with its adjustments. I look forward to finding more about The Burn.

Just stop with the Rogue Missions
sparklefish16 January 2022
I was enjoying this season up until this episode. I still like Vance, Stamets, and Adira. The constant rogue missions are getting wearisome to me. The Book character and his storyline wasn't holding my attention and I found myself looking at the clock, hoping the episode was almost over.

Scavengers
Prismark1024 November 2020
When Star Trek: Discovery was first announced. The Producers made it clear that the focus will not be the Captain of the ship but a junior crew member.

So I do not see some great conspiracy of bait and switch with the main character being Michael Burnham. Obviously it could be a problem for some, the type who keep score of how many straight white men are seen in the ship each episode.

Once again Saru is left disappointed as Burnham disobeys orders. She goes off with Emperor Georgiou to save Book who has sent an important message. Book has secured a black box that has more information about the Burn.

Book though is presently a slave in a despotic salvage operation planet. Georgiou poses as someone who has valuable Dilithium to sell in order to mount a rescue.

However the rescue is placed in jeopardy as Georgiou is suffering from some kind of flashbacks that maybe related to her interview with Kovich.

It is clear that there is a retro feel to the third series of Discovery by the amount of aliens seen in previous iterations of the show.

It was also interesting to see Admiral Vance criticise Saru for not coming to see him about the retrieval of the Black Box. That highlights either Saru's inexperience or that he does not entirely trust this future version of the Federation yet.

The mystery of the Burn does pose more questions and I am not sure Vance is being entirely honest. Then there is that piece of music.

It was nice to see Discovery get upgraded with future tech.

Star Trek is back!
dean_podbury21 November 2020
This season has been the best that this series has had to offer. The first two were almost... a terrible mess being made of Star Trek. The only positive thing from them is setting up this amazing season! This episode is just proof that fans of Star Trek are finally being given what they so desperately wanted.

Im a Discovery fan...and I'm getting sick of Michael
bnevs1820 November 2020
Seriously, Burnham Disobeys Orders is like jumping the shark at this point. Its good that she finally got some consequences for it, but they can only go to that well so often. The last couple of episodes havent really been that good...maybe I was expecting too much but, no...I think that they have wasted the mostly blank slate they were given by a new universe. We've already seen an Orion junkyard, why another? Also, there is something about Gray that just creeps me out...actor seems to be off or something. But really, at this point, there should have been more universe-building. When you are given a blank slate, your future is unhemmed and you dont have to worry about running out of content anytime soon. There should be some sense of something bigger going on, but the last several episodes have been worldbuilding of the most boring parts of the world. I mean, if they wanted to combine the last two episodes, that would be good (Burnham doesnt have to be EVERYWHERE...flesh out some of the other characters, they are really overreliant on Burnham, who would be a great secondary character, but cant hold the show by herself), get the character of Adira down and bring back Book in one episode. When you have an open canvas, you should have a problem with cramming too much into one season (like Season 1 with introduction, Klingon war, Mirror universe all smashed together) instead of having to find backwater stories.

RINSE AND REPEAT
douglasjordane29 November 2020
RESCUERS TO THE RESCUE RETURNS.

THIS IS A TYPICAL RESCUE EPISODE. OF COURSE, IT MUST LAST 45 MINUTES OF AIR-TIME UNTIL THE NICK OF TIME RESCUE OCCURS. THE HOPE IS THAT IN CREATING SUCH TYPICAL EPISODES, THAT THEY WILL BE AT LEAST ENGAGING WITH A COMPELLING STORY.

THIS WAS AT LEAST TYPICAL OF TV STORYLINES. EPISODES LIKE THIS ARE TYPICAL OF SAFE WRITING EXERCISES. THIS FILLER FALLS A BIT SHORT OF COMPELLING BUT WAS NOT BAD.

So sick of Burnham disobedience and the constant whisper talk
EntropyFashion19 November 2020
This was just a wasted episode seemingly designed to give us a full hour of Michael and her constant disobedience of Star Trek direct orders so she can do just what the hell she wants. And the stupid whisper acting is grating, especially when she whispers and the other actors speak back in a normal tone of voice.

Tired of fanboys trashing this show
jimparis-0363420 November 2020
I had to catch up with this series in a binge watch this year. I have found the stories entertaining and well thought out. This episode is no different. Some want to complain now that they are wasting time when they have a whole new time to explore. What it seems to come down to each week is people complaining that it is not like the old Star Trek they knew. Well thank God for that, we already have several series, and while they have all been different, it has always been this argument, it's not what I'm used to. Embrace the difference. Let them take time exploring this new time, they are trying to build up to have many more seasons. Enjoy the new, the different, and the story lines that are not like what you've seen before. This isn't TOS, THG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise. Let them add to this universe as they wish, and do not hobble them with memories of the past. Open your mind.
