A Dumb movie made by Smart people that somehow works, even though it probably shouldn't
Jared_Andrews2 August 2018
'Mystery Team' is a quirky little marvel. A concept that makes much more sense as a 10-minute comedy sketch is stretched into a 90-minute feature film and only really has one joke, but somehow it works.

That speaks to the talent of creative minds behind the project. They manage to take a marginally funny idea that becomes stale rather quickly, and somehow, they will this whole vehicle to keep trudging forward. Like MacGyver rigging up the device he needs out of whatever is laying around, the guys from Derrick Comedy enthusiastically squeeze the last drop out of everything at their disposal and get the job done.

The plot: three best friends work as detectives, calling themselves The Mystery team. For a hefty fee of a dime, the group will take on any case that comes their way, which is typically limited to the petty misdeeds of seven-year-olds. The team's exploits were charming when they were also seven, but they're now high school seniors, and their behavior makes them outcasts among their peers (but greatly amusing to movie viewers).

That's the primary joke of the movie-these kids are too old for this stuff. They're awkward and immature. They still think girls are icky. There isn't much to the bit, but the filmmakers have an advanced sense of when to smartly weave in secondary story elements and hilarious supporting characters to keep things entertaining. All the actors appear very aware of what movie they're in. They play their parts without an ounce of self-doubt and just the right level of cheesiness.

It becomes apparent very quickly that while the movie is dumb, it's made by smart people. It leans into its own absurdity. The actors are playing 18-year-olds but look 25 and act like they're seven. The Mystery Team members behave as if they're in a G movie despite all the debauchery from everything and everyone around them being decidedly hard R.

The silly, small-scale hijinks is given reason to become a full-length movie when a sad little girl asks The Mystery Team to solve her parents' murder, and they find themselves involved for the first time in a very adult case. Relying on their usual tactics and disguises, they manage to make impressive progress on the mystery, despite looking ridiculous every step of the way.

That's part of the brilliance of this movie. It's ridiculous because the characters are ridiculous, and it knows that. Many of jokes don't land because they aren't meant to. They're meant to emphasize how goofy and awkward these wannabe detectives are in every human interaction.

It's obvious from watching this film that the creative team members were capable of more. Glover became a superstar and the other members of Derrick Comedy all found their niche in writing or performing. Many of the supporting actors also landed more lucrative roles in movies or TV.

This is by no means a classic. The stars may look back on this and cringe, but they shouldn't. It's a better movie than most will give it credit for, and it's the one that will live on as what was a sign of greater things to come for this talented ensemble.

I laughed a lot
fx_man2 September 2009
Went into this film with zero knowledge of DERRICK comedy (the name reminds me of a famous German TV detective series) or the movie. Well, I must say I laughed more during this film than any other comedy I've seen this year. The dialog and deadpan delivery coupled with a truly clever script result in some genuine hilarity.

For the uninitiated, like myself, the following might help you decide whether this is something you'd like to watch. The film centers around three young (high school senior) "detectives" who've been solving various mysteries (disappearing kitty, stolen lunch, etc.) for a dime a pop throughout their childhood, when they are suddenly thrust into the midst of an honest to goodness real crime investigation. The plot is motivated by a basic fish out of water storyline, whereupon the three chaps stumble around in the adult world mostly unaware of what is going on around them, which makes for some genuinely funny situations.

The lead actors are affable and quickly pull the audience to their side. Unfortunately the supporting cast provides uneven performances, and the entire movie has a "homemade" feel to it. That doesn't begrudge the film's strengths though, carried by the three principals and the comic situations and dialog, which are presented and delivered perfectly. Considering the minimal budget with which they must have worked, one can look past the deficiencies.

I gave the movie 8 stars because I laughed an awful lot, and that's what a comedy is supposed to do, make one laugh. This also reminded me of the Broken Lizard comedy team and Super Troopers. Hopefully the DERRICK team will be able to sustain the momentum and keep making movies as funny as this one, with a better supporting cast and more sure handed direction, which could easily get them atop the current comedy heap.

Cleverly-Innocent, Hilarious, and Impressive
atomicpro31 August 2009
A fan of DERRICK comedy for many years, I was ecstatic when I found out they were semi-premiering Mystery Team in Austin, and got tickets.

The experience was fantastic. In addition to seeing the feature film, DERRICK frontmen DC, Donald, and Dominic were there to open and close the film and offer a quick Q & A- and the audience was treated to two never-before-seen new DERRICK shorts (which were, easily, some of their most-hilarious) as well as a live comedy sketch the trio did on the subject of their new 'squibbles' social network. (Don't ask, it ultimately was a big hilarious charade with no point.) Long-story-short, the entire night was excellent. Hilarious, genuine, and cleverly-crafted. The film, of course, was the most impressive aspects- both surprising, (minimally) disappointing, and inspiring in the way it played out.

Instead of the requisite R-rated vulgar (albeit hilarious) jabs you might expect from the trailer, the movie flows in a much more light-hearted, innocent manner- only sprinkled with bits of disgust and profanity. But it keeps its momentum WITH these bits, and is all-the-better because of it.

Here we've got, well, The MYSTERY TEAM- three older teenagers who, unlike the harsh reality the film takes place in, have delusions of grandeur and childlike obliviousness that both makes them innocent and immune to some of the outlandish situations they're placed in. The most vulgar and adult character, then, is the actual CHILD of the whole movie, an 8-year-old criminal- who swears and totes guns and hangs out in strip clubs- and the Mystery Team's interaction both with him and the many degenerates of the movie is really the catalyst and heart of both the story's intrigue and comedy.

Think of Alan from The Hangover, or Michael Scott from the Office- characters in that implacable position of both being winningly R-rated/inappropriate and pathetically juvenile at the same time. These guys are like that- and the movie moves and succeeds largely on this facet.

This isn't to say the film is technically superb, though. It is, and I was genuinely surprised. As a filmmaker myself, I was uncertain about how DERRICK's usually so-so technical qualities in their shorts would transport to the big screen. But they do so with maximum, artful flair and professional edge. When I was there, I was amazed at how such a self-produced movie could look so good, especially when I'm knowledgeable of just how far and how good such a camera as DERRICK's can ultimately look. They push their images and equipment to the limits, though, and the film looks simply pristine.

Riding a line similar to, say, Arrested Development in terms of being both preposterous and believable, Mystery Team isn't as FUNNY as the likes of this year's hilarious blockbuster The Hangover (although I've often heard it is).

No, it isn't FUNNIER, per se, but it's damn near close to AS FUNNY as The Hangover. But, no, the comparison isn't a justified one. Because really, Mystery Team succeeds in being an overall BETTER film- laden with characters you either love to hate or enjoy seeing succeed, pushing an innocence that makes you smile, and moving through situations and locations so diverse, profane, and vulgar you can't help but be intrigued.

Played-out like an actual mystery caper in classic Scooby-Doo fashion, Mystery Team's ability to mix heavy, outlandish satire with gritty realism and classical if not slightly overdone narrative flow makes it a potently winning, highly satisfying picture.

After the movie I got a chance to talk very briefly with the creators, and all approached my questions and musings with absolute friendliness, casual respect, and poise that made them fitting actors for such innocent roles. I may only be 19, but I've seen my share of douchebag indie filmmakers and these guys- both in their work and presentation- were anything but. A breath of fresh air I really enjoyed to be a part of. I hope they go far. Dominic, DC, Donald- if you ever read this: Bravo and Good Luck, guys.

A solid 8/10, close to a 9. If this plays even REMOTELY close to you, go see it. It's a genuinely silly and unforgiving pleasure of a movie you're sure to absolutely love.

A how to on making an SNL movie (without SNL)
denverbarndude8 June 2010
Hilarious. Cute. Adorable. Hard hitting action. Swear words! This movie has everything.

Seriously, Comedy Examiner said this was the funniest move of 2010 (June writing) and I seriously agree.

I saw this sketch comedy team on YT and they were very, very funny. Yet they rose to new heights by combining my favorite genre as an 8 year old with world weary modernism. I just wish that my favorite SNL characters would have made a film in this vein. It's funny; very funny. It's fresh and it hasa lot of heart...then spleen, then kidneys.

Best of luck to these guys and looking forward to the sequel.

Fun Indie Comedy Missing Only One Thing
curtis-822 February 2012
I enjoyed the ultra-low budget "Mystery Team" a whole lot, just like I enjoyed the equally low budget comedy "The Foot Fist Way." The concept is a great one--three grown men who used to be a locally famous mystery solving team when they were kids (like Mystery Incorporated or the Hardy Boys) but who never grew out of it. The jokes and the story are funny, but the premise isn't set up early enough in the story. It seems to me like a whole opening segment is missing--one that showed the Mystery Team as children solving at least one kiddie mystery and becoming famous for it. The refer to this history quite frequently, but it's never explicitly shown or explained. If you didn't already know (by reading a synopsis or the box) then you might be a bit lost the first half hour or so.

But still, a pretty amazing job for a zero-budget comedy.

UPDATE: I just watched the DVD with the commentary and learned that just such an opening sequence as I described above was filmed--one that showed the Mystery Team as kids, wearing the same clothes and everything. The Derrik people explained that "it just didn't work." Now I'm even more disappointed! It's even worse that this CRUCIAL SEQUENCE did indeed exist, and they actually edited it out! That's right--they purposely edited out the set-up to the high-concept joke that is the basis for the entire story! It's tantamount to editing out the first 30 minutes of "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" because you don't think it's all that important to show the audience that he was a wacky guy who time traveled from the sixties. (he's still funny, right?)

Mystery Team would have made TWICE as much money ($10k?) if they had included the set up to their hour and a half joke. Coulda been a "10" instead of a "7." What an f up!

A mystery worth solving
reymond81021 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
*Contains Spoilers*

When one hears of a film with completely unrecognizable actors and an unreasonable plot, we usually tend to ignore the project. But this had something different to offer.

Basically it is a story very similar to the scooby-doo cartoons (not the film). There are 3 nerdy looking guys who vow to solve any mystery that comes their way. Their projects are very silly and childish and their tip is usually from an even dumber member of the cast.

Their mundane lifestyle is changed with a murder taking place in the neighbourhood. It allows them to go on a "scintillating" adventure which ultimately ends with the perpetrators getting caught in what can only be described as a weird circumstance.

This is very much an episode of Scoobe-Doo without the ghosts and Scooby. It manages to capture the aura of the cartoon with the quirky laughters and the paradox involved (something the scooby doo movie failed to do I must add) and perhaps that is what elevated this from an average to a step higher.

Verdict: Will make you go back to days of Scooby and the mystery machine and must be watched if one wants to go there.

if you are a derrick comedy fan you'll love this!!
Chickengirl00114 June 2010
man, after the DVD came out the rating here went way down, I don't think many people who saw this movie knew anything about Derrick Comedy or just missed the point of it all together.

this isn't a family movie, the R rating should tell you that from the get go. It's a movie about 3 losers who have been solving mysteries since they were kids, but get thrown into reality when they decide to take on the ridiculous case of solving a murder. The three guys from Derrick Comedy are hysterical..every line they say is so silly and ridiculous..and the antics they get into...you'll either be amused by it or totally hate it.

Also, this movie is very similar to what you see in Derrick Comedy's skits. That same humor and silliness in the skits is in this movie...

you'll either love it or hate it. as a fan of the guys of Derrick Comedy I thought it was hilarious and just enjoyed it for what it was; but I think some people might miss the boat on this one.

This was a very fresh idea but it could have been a lot better
planktonrules18 December 2011
This is a frustrating movie. That's because the idea for "Mystery Team" is great--three junior crime fighters (much like Encyclopedia Brown or the Hardy Boys) are getting a bit too old for such childish adventures. But, the film often delves into VERY adult territory--material that is bound to unnecessarily alienate and offend many.

The film begins with three VERY nerdy friends talking about, what else, solving crimes. However, there really are no mysteries about--and they mostly just harass a poor neighbor on life support. At school, the three are either ignored or beaten up, as they don't even come close to fitting in with other high school seniors. However, eventually one of their totally unimportant mysteries actually leads to a very serious and deadly crime...MURDER! Along the way, they visit strip joints, go to wild parties and nearly get themselves killed--which is very tough for three guys who make Steve Urkel and Screech look like a sophisticated men of the world! The film has many funny moments and I loved the idea of 18 year-olds who act like precious 10 year-olds from 1960. The fish out of water aspect is very enjoyable. But, again and again, the film chooses jokes about erections, nudity, bestiality and other stuff that becomes tiresome. It's a shame, as a more literate script would have made a TERRIFIC film. As is, it's a guilty pleasure you should watch well after you put your kids to bed!! a bit crude sort of like Encyclopedia Brown

Spot on as a comedy, not to be taken seriously
marc057 June 2010
Not sure why some people hate the movie so much. Of course this isn't a family film and the movie is not to be taken so seriously. I suppose that a movie can't please everyone. I for one am a fan of Derrick Comedy and this was good time spent. I hadn't laughed from a movie as much as I have after watching this one. Although I did feel that one of the main three characters was left out, it actually portrayed what the character's personality was. The first couple of minutes didn't make the movie seem that great, but as the story progresses, it gets better. As for the plot itself, it's not what makes the movie good. This movie is a comedy, and for what comedies do, it was spot on. In the end it's going to be up to you to decide whether you like it or not, but I for one recommend it. Maybe it's because of all the hours I've been awake so far, but I was laughing the whole way through.

A Valiant First Effort.
DamnYouGoogle2 June 2010
Derrick Comedy are on the brink of being the next comedy wave...hell in a lot of ways they already are with their shorts. Every other person involved with DC seems to be getting big time roles in major TV shows like Community to The Office...but we aren't reviewing their worth to the comedy scene as a whole we are reviewing their debut feature length film, Mystery Team.

There is a lot of promise in this movie, and some heartfelt laughs, but it might have been a tad to much for DC to handle with such little funds (as far as movies go) and lack of SCREEN WRITING experience and as the movie goes on the weaknesses turn from paper cuts to gaping wounds. DC tend to fall into a rut where they cant think of a funny situation to throw in the movie with the premise given so they throw in some misplaced fart, or rape, or poop jokes, and that coupled with weak acting leads to disastrous gaps in comedy.

The performances of the stronger actors in the film like Donald Glover, and Aubrey Plaza (Who from what I know isn't affiliated with DC outside this movie) seem pulled down by their weaker counterparts, and one can only a assume a few more shorts and a drama class or two couldn't have hurt them in preparation for such a major project.

Mystery Team does have to be taken with a grain of salt though. The movie is far from void of laughs, and at the end of the day it was 3 guys making a movie they envisioned and even though they I'm sure they'll even admit it was harder then they expected, it seems like they had a hell of a good time doing it.

On some lesser but still major faults Donald Glovers score is horrible, and the screenplay in itself has some serious drags in it, I know I keep bringing it up but people should know how important it is to keep a comedy going, moving and moving if there isn't A situation a joke could be going into, there should be plot development not just hit or miss one liners, that in this case often miss.

Im excited for the future of every main character in this movie....but as for Mystery Team as a whole a have to call it a lackluster movie with a heavy dose of one shot laughs.

An hour and a half of my life I will never get back.
Wow. What a disappointment.

This movie was just all around awful in so many ways. I would have rather have watched a documentary about the alarming spread of STD's among yak herders in Siberia. I endured the whole movie hoping beyond hope that some glimmer of a comedic gem might sparkle through. But the only facial movement I could muster that might have been mistaken as a smile (more of a quiver, really) came as the credits rolled and the white hot pain started to subside.

Although the storyline may have had some promise, it's lost in a barrage of bad acting and garbled, poorly aimed attempts at humor. Between the "golly jeepers" and the nudity, I can't imagine what demographic the writers may have been aiming for. It's far too crude for children, too cheesy and embarrassing for teens, and too infantile for any adult that hasn't suffered severe neurological damage from a drug overdose.

Perfect and laugh-out-loud funny with great performances
johnnymonsarrat8 February 2010
You have to see this movie.

"Mystery Team" is a parody of a phenomenon that was never itself a film: The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and especially Encyclopedia Brown.

They manage to walk the line -- like the first Austin Powers film -- so that it's neither too wacky so you can't believe it and don't care about the characters, but not too boring that it's not full of subtle interplay.

The main gag is the innocence of the boys, who are thrust into adult situations continually. It's all about the acting in this film, and kudos especially to "Donald Glover". Dressing like an outrageous hobo, for example, could come across as really stupid in a film with Jim Carrey or Rob Schneider, who play up their roles too much. Donald manages to do it consistently.

On top of that, there are a several delightful plot twists that you won't see coming. The film tries to balance the boys basically being incompetent with allowing them to succeed in a way that isn't too corny.

It's laugh-out-loud funny throughout, a genuine must-see if you like intelligent edgy comedies. Note, it's not really meant to be a kids film. There's a lot of raunchy humor.

I'll give Mystery Team a well-earned 9 out of 10. It just missed a 10 because the ending was good but not quite a classic.

a team of grown up kids
chelano26 August 2010
This film was pretty funny. You have to like these guys sense of humor though. I use to watch all their stuff online and I thought it was pretty funny. I saw a trailer for the movie here and had to watch it. Donald Glover is pretty funny and has one of the funniest screams in cinema. Dominic Dierkes had a funny character, but as for himself, he was just OK. D.C. Pierson has a great character and he was pretty watch to just listen to. There is a fun little cast for this film and faces you would have seen from different shows on TV. The great thing about this movie is it is about mystery, so the story line was actually not that bad and even had a twist ending like most mysteries do. So we have a good story and tons of laughs. That makes a pretty decent comedy. The only real problem they had was that sometimes the film got kind of cheesy and it would ruin the film. Or some scenes would stretch just a hair too much and almost ruin the laugh. So overall, you will get some laughs out of this film and you can tell that the cast not only got into their characters, but they just plain out had fun with it.

One of the worst movies ever
mcmugged1 June 2010
I am tired of movies with blood and guts, bad language and graphic sex, so I thought I would watch this one. The thing that made me think this movie might be watchable is that it is about a group of kids who solve mysteries. That gave me the mistaken idea that it was going to be a family type of movie. Turns out this movie is anything but a family movie. I really don't know who it is aimed at. Even teenagers probably would think this movie is too stupid to watch. Maybe pre-teens would think it was funny, but then if they aren't 17 or older, they shouldn't be watching it anyway. The acting was so bad, I felt embarrassed for the actors. The storyline could have had some promise but it is as if the people who produced this movie tried to go out of their way to be sure it was bad. I watched about 20 minutes then I fast forwarded through the rest of it to see if it looked any better, but no. The DVD this movie is printed on is worth more blank than this movie in my opinion. To be fair, I should have checked the rating before I tried to watch it, but even that doesn't really mean much.

TheOneThatYouWanted16 December 2017
You know what? This is legitimately a funny film, in an offbeat kind of way. The movie is really ahead of its time. I found out about it because it has a little cult following. I was told to go into it knowing nothing and avoid the trailer at any cost because it spoils the best jokes. Not that you have to worry about running into a trailer for a 10 year old film.

Needed to be just a tad funnier
zetes6 June 2010
A comedy with a good concept, but it just doesn't quite deliver in the laugh department. Donald Glover, D.C. Pierson and Dominic Dierkes play three 18 year-old boys who peaked when they were seven years old. A master of disguise, a boy genius and a tough kid, together they formed the Mystery Team, who would solve petty, childish mysteries around town for a dime a pop. They were beloved at the time, but when they're still at it 11 years later, it's kind of sad. One day a little girl brings them a grown-up mystery: her parents were murdered. It's out of their jurisdiction (they're usually occupied with finding out who stuck their finger in an old lady's boysenberry pie), but, pressured to grow up, they take the case. The film gets some good mileage out of these juveniles getting mixed up in strip clubs and drug deals. And it has its share of fun bits and good lines. But, in the end, it all comes down to the fact that it's never funny enough. It just feels like the film misses too many opportunities. There's a sequence where two of the kids reveal to the third that they do indeed intend to go to college next year that demonstrates that the film could have been much more.

Definitely Not For Kids
chicagopoetry27 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
What do you get when you cross Spy Kids with Porkies, or Pink Panther with Clerks, or Scooby Doo with a Saturday Night Live skit or a Cohen Brothers film? It's called Mystery Team. It's a raunchy, weird farce in which three gay nerds walk around saying things like "Great gumballs" through the nasty world in which some guys poops in the punch and some prostitute wants to suck them off. There is plenty of nudity, swearing, puking, violence and other scatological jokes, but it all goes over the heads of our three innocent goofball teenage detectives, who are just as oblivious as the characters in Dude Where's My Car or Harry or Kumar Go to White Castle. The writing and camera work is pretty good, resulting in some genuinely funny moments. But don't be misled. This one isn't for the kids.

So super phenomenal!!!!
iliner-13 June 2010
I loved it. Loved it all over. I was on the edge of my seat, but I kept falling over with laughter. It was written in a way that was perfectly suited to the comedic voices of Bobby Moynihan, Matt Walsh, Jon Daly, Aubrey Plaza, etc but still maintained a really strong voice in and of itself.

Gun to my head, if I had to criticize it, I would say I could have used more Ben Schwartz. But I feel that way about EVERYTHING........

So so so good. I cannot say enough good things about this movie!!!! I feel as though any negative reviewers on here probably wanted to see a simple, straight-forward comedy and that it is not. It is an ethically challenging movie with really artistic choices and deep belly uncontrollable laughs.

Enjoy.

Kind of funny
paul_haakonsen29 May 2010
I was expecting "Mystery Team" to be more funny than it actually was, but don't get me wrong. It is a nice movie! The story in the movie was alright, and is good for some laughs. There are also lots of cheesy dialogue and odd moments, which all works well for the movie.

Of the three main characters, I must say that I liked the Charlie character the most. His stupidity was hilarious. He had me cracked up, and the actor who played Charlie did a good job.

Now at first, the movie seemed to be some kind of family movie, or a movie for a younger audience. But the movie quickly shows that it is not that kind at all. Just listen to the dialogue and the sometimes harsh language.

The movie is, for me at least, the type of movie that you watch once, and never again. But despite this fact, if you like odd comedies then perhaps give "Mystery Team" a chance.

Derrick Comedy strikes on the big screen!
priest_of_zeus5 December 2009
This movie had what many movies today do not.

It was funny.

It was well worth my money.

It had heart.

A genuinely funny movie that had me and the rest of the theater rolling at every joke, Mystery Team is the first of what I'm sure will be many feature length films completed by Derrick Comedy. The trio of actors easily compliment each other's comical timing to the point of perfection, not to mention the very visual style it was shot. I love the camera angles and moves, and over all it keeps the energy flowing throughout the story. This movie was not made on a big budget, nor was it done in the glamor of Hollywood. This movie is a portrait of legitimate hard work and dedication that culminated into a hilarious movie. I recommend seeing Mystery Team as soon as it becomes available to you.

Silly, fun concept with a range of comedic devices
Movie_Muse_Reviews8 August 2011
We haven't seen a good kid detective since "Harriet the Spy." No, the "Spy Kids" franchise doesn't count — I'm talking old school. Donald Glover, D.C. Pierson and Dominic Dierkes put their own grown-up spin on the genre best exemplified by "Encyclopedia Brown" with their comedy "Mystery Team," a coming-of-age story infused with mystery and plenty of slapstick.

Jason (Glover), Duncan (Pierson) and Charlie (Dierkes) are three high school seniors who never grew out of being kid detectives, thus spending time tracking down first graders for schoolyard bullying or neighborhood high jinks instead of chasing after girls. They don't swear, they're oblivious to sexual references and their street smarts are non-existent. When a young girl comes to their booth and pays them a dime to find out who killed her parents, they suddenly realize they have an opportunity to prove that they're still relevant to the community that used to adore them.

After ruling out all possible sixth grade suspects, the Mystery Team eventually finds itself a promising lead thanks to the town hobo. Soon, of course, they find themselves in way over their heads. Pushed to the limit, the case not only tests their courage, but also their friendship.

From a humor perspective, there's a lot going on. Between each character's idiosyncrasies, the team's collective childish ignorance and some R-rated slapstick, "Mystery Team" has its own comedic style distilled from these various styles. Some of its wickedly funny while other jokes (such as Charlie's bone-headed nature) become redundant.

From a talent perspective, Glover leads the way. Jason is supposed to be a master of disguise. All of his disguises are completely ridiculous and horribly misconstrued. For example, when the team's suspects head to a "gentleman's club," they attempt to get in wearing top hats, sporting monocles and speaking with accents. Glover not only has fun going over the top with his disguises, but he works in some awkward humor and some sarcasm as well. He should evolve into a mainstream comedic force in the not-too-distant future.

At times, "Mystery Team" is hard to take seriously. The child-like ignorance brings about some funny moments, but to presume that these guys are completely oblivious to this point in their lives seems odd. There comes a point where the humor of the main characters should not trump how believable and relatable they are as people. Except for a couple scenes involving Jason's folks, their parents aren't involved. Considering real parents would not have condoned such childish behavior at their age, it would've been nice for them to be a bit more involved. However, the script does handle the more dramatic coming-of-age elements rather well and you'll like the characters regardless.

"Mystery Team" has a good time playing with its clever concept and as such it's a joy to watch. Despite being rather light-hearted and silly, it's easy enough to enjoy, not unlike a good razor-thin kid detective book.

WOW! This was a HORRIBLE Movie
Cworld141 June 2010
Who wrote the positive reviews here? It must be those associated with this sad production. This movie just does'nt know what it wants to be. They sell it to us as a children's movie. But a children's movie it is not. Is it one of those sly witty but adult teen coming of age movies? NO, it is not. It is an unbelievably stupid and vulgar waste of time. It's one of those movies you keep watching because you think it just has to get better. But sadly, it does not. This movie is poorly acted, poorly written and poorly conceived. And that's the best thing I can say about it. Don't waste your time or your money. Wait till it comes to Free TV and then you decide for yourself.

Silly, clever, and very funny

The very premise sounds so promising, not least with Donald Glover involved, and as soon as we start watching our hopes are borne out. I'm not familiar with Derrick Comedy, but Glover, DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes, and Dan Eckman have created a wonderfully silly, fun mystery comedy that serves up hearty laughs from the moment it begins. Cheekily twisting up the childish play of "boy detectives" with very adult scenarios (sex, nudity, murder, swear swords), and teenagers who remain trapped in a hopelessly naïve , innocent mindset, results in a steady stream of playful ridiculousness. More than that, the troupe plays fast and loose with every conceivable facet of the characters, dialogue, scene writing, and narrative, making every excuse for costume changes, simple-minded misunderstandings of the most mundane aspects of the modern world, and in contrast, sudden swerves to very mature subject matter and violence. I expected I'd enjoy this and I'm not disappointed; 'Mystery Team' is a blast!

The narrative at large is surprisingly solid, if admittedly nothing we wouldn't seen in the average Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew novel, or an episode of 'Murder, she wrote.' That recognizable bent is part of the charm, though, and anyway, the picture is built purely for fun in the first place; along the way there are some select moments that are kind of brilliant. I won't say that it's altogether perfect, as the plot follows an arc that couldn't possibly be more tried and true. Moreover, as the flick shifts from the arrested development of principals Jason, Duncan, and Charlie to the more earnest, adult-oriented sequences there are surely some tonal issues on hand, and I'd also say that in and of themselves some of the sleazier inclusions are maybe a step too far outside the bounds of the scenario the feature has devised. To that same end, while it's part and parcel of the dichotomy of "boy detectives in an adult world," it's worth noting some less welcome language in the dialogue including homophobia and ableism. Yet no matter how severely one may view such matters, or how wide the swings in tone, the fact remains that 'Mystery Team' wants only to entertain, and it's so reliably witty that it's wonderfully funny from the very beginning through to the very end.

All eyes are on Glover here first and foremost, for every reason, and the wild energy he gives Jason reminds of Troy Barnes in 'Community' taken to an even greater level. He's handily matched, though by Pierson and Dierkes as they round out the titular trio, and that's not to count out anyone else involved; among so many others, it's always a joy to see Aubrey Plaza anywhere, and even in her full-length movie debut she's terrific in her supporting part. Those stunts and effects that are employed look great, Eckman's direction is very capable, and in all other ways this is very well made. The key remains the humor, though, and between the screenplay and the acting that brings it to life, there are very few moments that aren't delightful. Particular with the excessive extremity of some of the adult-oriented subject matter this won't appeal to all comers; for that matter, some of the comedy is a tad, well, juvenile, beyond even the scope of the premise. It's not wholly flawless. Any reasonable criticisms to be made are far outweighed by the value the film has to offer, however, and I think most viewers would surely have a good time here to one degree or another. It may not be a total must-see, but all the way through 'Mystery Team' is a joy, and if you're seeking something light to put a smile on your face it's hard to go wrong here!

Nerds playing detective.

I won't lie, there were moments where I laughed out loud, but for that you have to like childish humor a bit, even though this movie isn't really suitable for kids. So yes there were good moments, but also moments where I thought it was too ridicule. Mystery Team is good enough to watch once though. The acting wasn't bad, not excellent but better than average. The story itself fits the ridicule, nothing serious at all about it, just a bit of fun and light entertainment.

Awful

Warning: Spoilers
My husband insisted to see a good comedy so we make the fatal error to trust that Mystery Team is maybe not a good movie but a nice one. Well we were bored to death; when the movie come finally to the end was the most pleasant moment.

The script is boring, the acting is bad, the jokes are just lame. I truly can't see where is the funny part of this movie.

Maybe for the children who are seven years old this movie can be amusing but for the grown-ups it hasn't any catch. Is just another bad comedy-parody teenager movie.

As for actors, DC Pierson, aka Duncan is the only one who has a little talent.
