What exactly is Disney+’s filmed version of “Hamilton”? Is it akin to a documentary, with a film crew observing the performance in the same way as its live audience? Or is it a narrative film, where the set just happens to be the stage of Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre?
When talking about painstakingly produced, filmed versions of stage productions like this, co-executive producers Jon Kamen and Dave Sirulnick of RadicalMedia offer some novel terminology: cinematic interpretation.
“Part of what makes something a cinematic interpretation is the planning, the preparation, the attention to detail brought to these, and treating them as a separate work. When we first sat down with Lin[-Manuel Miranda] and Tommy [director Thomas Kail] and Jeffrey Seller, the producer, the first question was understanding their vision for what they wanted to achieve with a filmed version of this incredible piece of art they had made,” Sirulnick, RadicalMedia’s president of entertainment,...

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most loved and memorable musicals of the theatre. In October 2011, the 1986 musical celebrated its 25th anniversary by staging a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The anniversary production was filmed so that this once-in-a-lifetime performance could join the rising number of theatre performances coming home to Blu-ray. While the complex set changes and some of the more dramatic theatre effects are marginalized due to the location and filming concerns, the overall production stays in tact. It’s a mesmerizing display of theatre talent, complete with a reunion performance. There are a handful of moments, however, that will make die-hard theatre fans wince – as I did when I saw them use Led screens. I still thoroughly enjoyed the performance what it was, a chance to see Phantom performed once again at a fraction of the cost of seeing it on Broadway.

When Les Miserables closed its doors on Broadway in 2003, it was a sad day for all theater savants. Despite the 2006 revival, the legendary theatre show was inevitably moving towards its final show. Personally, it was the one musical I made it a point to see every year. On October 3, 2010, Les Miserables celebrated its 25th Anniversary with two concerts at The O2 Arena in North Greenwich. Despite the questionable casting of Nick Jonas as Marius, it was an awe-inspiring performance. Tony Award Winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon) starred as Fantine and Alfie Boe took the stage in the poignant role of Jean Valjean. Now available on Blu-ray, the home video release puts you right in the O2 Arena, evoking all the emotional bliss of being right there in the O2 Arena.
Perhaps what makes Les Miserables so memorable is that it is a Robin Hood story of have-nots. Jean Valjean was...

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: Oh wingéd primate, can you answer my query? I have often heard about celebrities that "everybody" knows are gay, but are not out to the public. Is "everybody" ever right, or is it all rumor? How does "everybody" even know? In respect to your policy, any example you give can be of celebrities who are now officially out. — Kaci, Kentucky
A: Is “everybody” right when they say someone is gay, or are they just repeating rumors? It kinda depends.
To be fair, there are plenty of closeted celebrities who are quite open in their private lives — on movie sets and at semi-private Hollywood parties. (Many of these celebrities used to be completely open even in Hollywood restaurants, West Hollywood streets, but that's changed in the era of Perez.
