Bringing her observational knack to the realm of genre formula, New York auteur Bette Gordon tackles matters of crime, guilt and redemption with a solid grasp of character and place in The Drowning. Overcoming the screenplay’s gaping holes in logic is another matter. Like most thrillers, this story of a child psychologist who’s drawn into the net of a vindictive former patient requires a certain suspension of disbelief. Gordon, who has explored lives in the margins in Variety, Luminous Motion and Handsome Harry, doesn’t quite manage to bridge the gaps or make every corner of the story ring true, but with...

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Juan Pablo Cadaveira comes form a background of editing narrative, documentaries and commercials. As an editor, he has worked on “Handsome Harry” (Tribeca Film Festival), “History Detectives” (PBS series); and documentary "License to Thrive: Title IX at 35." “Maravilla” is his first film as director/producer/writer, which has already won “best editing” award at “Mar del Pata” Film Festival. Biggest challenge in completing this project? I think the biggest challenge was to follow a high profile athlete, who travels around the globe, while not knowing how the story was going to develop. We wanted to follow Sergio’s life until he got the chance to regain his title in the ring, but we didn’t know if that would ever happen while we were in production. Knowing Sergio's personality, I knew he would not stop fighting, so I knew no matter what there would...

Award-winning stage and television actor Jamey Sheridan.s a familiar face to lovers of the Law & Order franchise. Over five years, he created a brooding, almost Byronic hero in Captain James Deakins on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. Sheridan.s diverse body of work includes art films like The Ice Storm, mainstream episodic television and Hollywood films. But Sheridan currently stars in Handsome Harry, an independently produced road movie, which he also produced. It tells the moving story of a Vietnam veteran desperate to learn more about a homophobic crime he witnessed as a young Marine. He searches for people he hopes can shed some light on it, and learns hard truths about himself. The film co-stars Steve...

While big-ticket blockbusters flood theatres every week, worthy little indie films gasp for air. The quietly excellent “Handsome Harry” is one of these. The movie debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival last spring, then sat around till September, when indie vet Mark Urman picked it up for his Paladin distribution company. Now here it is, opening this weekend in New York, Los Angeles and Miami (and other cities soon). Better late than undeservedly overlooked.
The film’s director, Bette Gordon, started out in New York’s downtown movie scene back in the punk days, and is now a professor in Columbia University’s filmmaking program. She’s a master of mood and pace, and she never opts for an obvious shot, or hurries the story along for fear of testing some hypothetical viewer’s patience. Not that she needed to worry about that -- there isn’t a dead passage in the whole picture.

In the 1985 film “Variety,” director Bette Gordon tackled the idea of female sexual empowerment and desire through the lens of pornography. For her latest film “Handsome Harry,” which debuts today in New York, Gordon flipped her interest in gender dynamics to the male perspective.

Why isn't Jamey Sheridan a star? He's got that onscreen quality that commands attention, does work that's always interesting and has both talent and versatility. Yet Handsome Harry, a vehicle that shows him to advantage, comes as a kind of revelation. It's the kind of breakout role that makes you ask: Why doesn't this guy get roles like this more often? Provocative, poignant and sometimes problematic, Handsome Harry would seem to have timing on its side. With the continuing debate about the military's "don't ask/don't tell" policy, this story about characters looking back at a violent act of homophobia during their service years is obviously of the moment. At the center of the story is Harry Sweeney (Sheridan), an electrician who owns his own business, apparently in upstate New York. He gets a call one night from an old Navy buddy, Thomas Kelly...

In Bette Gordon's new drama, Handsome Harry, Campbell Scott stars as the victim of a long-ago hate-crime attack perpetrated by a pair of Navy buddies -- Tom Kelly (Steve Buscemi) and "Handsome" Harry Sweeney (Jamey Sheridan) -- who are now seeking to atone for their sins. Harry, who was involved in a secret relationship with Scott's character, goes on a journey to confront the three other men involved in the crime, who are less than eager to acknowledge this ugly chapter from their past, and thus begins the revelatory tale. Scott talks about playing Sheridan's gay lover and what's next. Q: You and Jamey Sheridan have known each other a long time?A: Eighteen years? We did the play Long Day's Journey Into Night together, where we played brothers.Q: So how do you go from brothers to lovers, as your characters are in Handsome Harry?...

The titular Harry (Jamey Sheridan), an aging ex-Navy electrician, is shaken from his cozy small-town existence when he receives a call from an old Navy buddy (Steve Buscemi), who is dying of a dire, unnamed disease. He summons Harry to his deathbed to exact one final wish: to track down Kagan (Campbell Scott), the old cohort that Harry, along with Buscemi and a gaggle of their Navy buddies, viciously assaulted following a wild night at sea. Bound by a sense of duty, Harry travels to Miami to find Kagan, dropping in on the rest of his old crew along the way, who are played to the hilt by an impressive array of character actors,...

My conversation with Bette Gordon at the Tribeca Film Festival was probably the most film schoolish of any I had. Talking about her use of camera styles, her attempts to make a statement about post-Vietnam masculine identity, using the actors to motivate camera movement rather than the other way around-- it definitely wasn't the usual chat about funny on-set moments and what it was like to work with the lead actors. Gordon, whose landmark feminist film Variety was also playing at the festival as a revival, directed Handsome Harry as a way to explore masculinity. "It's my interest in gender. You really understand gender I think by looking at both sides of something." Working with Jamey Sheridan, whom she'd directed previously in Luminous Motion (you can see my interview with him here), Gordon told the story of Harry Sweeney, a Vietnam war veteran forced to face down dark secrets from...

Odds are you've seen Jamey Sheridan in something, be it a handful of performances on Law & Order: Criminal Intent or supporting roles in movies like Syriana, The Ice Storm and Nothing but the Truth. But in Handsome Harry, his second collaboration with director Bette Gordon, you can't miss him. As the main character Harry Sweeney, Sheridan is in nearly every frame as his character grapples with an awful secret from his past by reuniting with his old Navy buddies. As producer and star, Sheridan was a key element in getting Handsome Harry get made, and even convincing Gordon-- who also directed him in Luminous Motion-- to sign on. "I wanted her to direct, and I wanted to work with her. We were taking about this kind of stuff for a while, and I was telling her I thought she could direct men better than men could. " But Gordon wasn't...

Steve Buscemi is worried about me.I'm catching up with him Saturday night at the Handsome Harry premiere for Tribeca Film Festival. (He's also prominently featured in Blank City, a documentary about the New York No Wave film scene in the late '70s/early '80s, which had its red carpet just mere moments before this one). Buscemi only has two scenes in the film, and during one of those, we only hear...

The night before, Neeson attended the debut of Quinn's other Tribeca Film Festival movie, The Eclipse. Quinn, godfather to Richardson and Neeson's younger son Daniel, also recently was photographed with the family at a New York Knicks game."[The boys] are keeping busy with normal life,...

The happy couple met while working at a theater in Boston. "I was in a one-man play, so I was very lonely," he said on the red carpet, holding hands with McElfresh. "Kathleen was in a play by the same author, but with a real cast. I just ended up with the cast one night,...

I know it looks dire as it's 28% lighter (at least so far) and minus an artistic director, but no fear, there's still more to come, and with what's been announced theirs some interesting sounding stuff, especially a film we wrote about briefly called Accidents Happen. Also premiering is the comedy Stay Cool and the Danish film Original, along with the North American premier of The Exploding Girl which we also wrote about.

The Tribeca Film Festival has unveiled its competition and discovery sections, revealing a streamlined but nonetheless eclectic list for its eighth annual edition.
In its competition section, the springtime fest will see a host of noted filmmakers mix with newer talents. Acclaimed playwright Conor McPherson will world premiere "The Eclipse," a drama about a widower prone to supernatural visions that stars Aidan Quinn, while indie stalwarts the Polish brothers will debut "Stay Cool," their high-school reunion dramedy that stars Winona Ryder.
Meanwhile, indie faves like Amir Naderi will return with dramas like "Vegas: Based on a True Story," while emerging Norweigan director Rune Denstad Langlo will mark the North American premiere at the fest of his "North," a comedy about a former ski champion who endures a mental breakdown.
"We think this slate plays to the strengths of the festival, which is a mix of foreign films and more recreational...
