Passable (C)

Curious to watch this after sitting through the three seasons of the superior Belgian show. Also watched this episode on the German version, and neither was impressive. I didn't think the German actor compared well to Koen De Bouw as the Professor, and neither does Ben Miller. This first episode showed none of the weird humor of it's inspiration. I liked most of the actors and they might mature into their roles (although none will match the Belgian version of Ingrid but Frances de la Torre is always fun to watch.) Plus the wrap up of the case was very rushed.

Could go either way

I hadn't heard anything about this show. Don't know about the original, which another reviewer implies had some humor? I get this is a first episode and they need to spend times things up a bit, but the mystery part seemed a little too brief and straightforward. I can see this being middling, awkward, and clichéd. Or it might end up blossoming into its own original, layered, and quirky thing. It so far seems like yet another knockoff of shows like Wallander or Hinterland - slow, gloomy, a quiet piano playing throughout - mixed with Monk apparently. Oh and this proves what we learned in early 2020, that the general public doesn't understand how gloves work for cleanliness.

The Anatomy of a Memory

Warning: Spoilers
Adapted from a Belgian television series.

Professor T (Ben Miller) is an ace criminologist with OCD issues. A lecturer at Cambridge University who is abrupt to his students.

In short part modern day Sherlock and Monk.

The opening episode made during the Covid pandemic. It missed an opportunity to tie Professor T's obsession with cleanliness with Covid.

DI Lisa Donckers consults her former professor who is unwilling to help track down a serial attacker of women.

Eventually he relents and one of the victim's recalls under hypnotism that the attacker had a significant tattoo. It comes in handy, a bit too conveniently.

Miller can do quirky effortlessly. I did find the opening episode tried too hard to be offbeat. The denouement was disappointing.

Fantastic start, faultless.

Student Diana Tyson is attacked at her university campus, The Police look for help from Professor T, Jasper.

I don't often get so engrossed in a show following one singular episode, but I was, and an, this was a terrific start, every element felt somehow on point.

I had expected a drama along the lines of The Mallorca Files, or Father Brown, and although Frances de la Tour does provide some laughs, it's actually fairly serious in parts.

Great to see Ben Miller in a slightly more serious role, and he really does deliver, I thought he was outstanding here.

Glorious production values, very, very well made.

Bravo, 9/10.

A new intelligent super sleuth.

Morse, House and the Good Doctor combined to make a distant but compelling character come to life. Hoping this will carry on as good as the first episode.

Stella opening

What a great start.

I have been suffering a TV void since binge-watching the original Belgian version earlier this year and this was well worth wait. I was concerned though.

Just 9 days before the release of this on Britbox, Matt Baker had adapted another Walter Presents show, Before We Die on All 4, and totally ruined the remake.

Thankfully, Matt had help to adapt this and with a brilliant original to work from plus the comedic takents of Ben Miller and Frances De La Tour, the show couldn't really go wrong.

In fact, there were parts of this version that I preferred.

The opening titles on the original were quite basic while these told us a story and, I loved the dream sequences too, especially when the for sale sign blows up.

Ingrid stole every scene she was in in the original but she seems to have a straight role here. I do hope her character will be expanded.

The only other downsides for me were the anglifying of names (Daan to Dan, Annelies to Lisa, Flamant to Brand, Rabat to Rabbit, Teerlinck to Tempest, Adeline to Adelaide, De Winter to Winters) and the bubbly blonde character of Annelies has turned to something more stern here.

Unlike Before We Die, the actors here seem to be making the characters their own rather than playing the actor which makes for much better viewing.

I just can't understand why the Belgian tax shelter is running these shows. Couldn't our own government be doing this instead?
