Rent, don't buy..
HighFlyer_151 October 2009
I bought it, because I was fooled by the "destined to become a cult classic" sticker on the front.. It's nowhere near being a cult classic, I'd be surprised if it's remembered in a few years..

The characters were funny enough, most of the time, but sometimes also too much.. Like lead actor Morgan got annoying in the end with his cocky attitude, could've been done better..

Zombies farting all the time isn't my thing either.. Zombies suddenly learning to run in the middle of the movie isn't my thing either.. An ending you've seen many times before isn't my thing either..

Also a very big concern I have.. WHY do some zombie heroes and heroins try to find a cure, that can turn the zombies back to normal?? Who'd want to be a rotten human? Zombies are DEAD and CAN'T be turned back.. You can maybe make a vaccine, so you can become immune, but a cure to turn you back would never be possible in any zombie universe..

"You've been turned back to normal! Now go live your life again!" "But.. My guts are all over the floor.." *drops dead again*

Rent it, if you MUST see it!

A valiant effort on a over-used concept that I still love
pssn29 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
One of the voters said this is the love child of Flight of the Conchords and Sean of the Dead and I have to agree with that comparison. Last of the Living is a humorous take on the zombie genre with a New Zealand twist. It tells the story or 3 guys in the middle of an apocalypse surrounded by the living dead. The 3 friends move from mansion to mansion and kick back watching TV and playing video games. The banter between the guys is quite funny because it is the kinda dialogue that most male friends would use, for example, talking about chicks, talking about each others mums and thinking about what movie to watch next. Its only when they meet a female survivor that purpose comes into their lives and they try and save the world. It does rip off scenes from 28 Days Later, Day of the Dead and many others but I get the feeling that was the point. The film isn't something original, but what it does have is great camera work, cool fights, and good music. I am looking forward to seeing what the director and writer comes up with next. It kept me interested from start to finish which is more than most films and the acting was above par even though it is a horror/comedy. If you like zombie films and TV shows like Flight of the Conchords then you will enjoy this I'm sure. 6 out of 10 and I was close to giving it a 7.

It wasn't that bad, way better than other $45k budget movies.
rookshunter2 November 2011
Sure it was a cheap film, but it was a cheap ZOMBIE film, so its fine. :)

The main characters were interesting enough to keep you entertained. It was definitely setup that these guys are the same guys you probably went to high school with, not some former navy seals or special ops, just your average zombiepocolypse survivors making the best of it. It did start kinda slow, but built up, and by the middle of the film I had a moderate interest to see how it all ended up.

The effects were a little cheesy, but I've seen much worse from other zombie flicks with much larger budgets.

All in all, if you're willing to stick it out through a slow beginning, the film is a fun way to kill 88 min.

Totally misses
Michael-d-duncan14 November 2009
Wow... So this film was so boring. I rented it because it looked like it would be up the same alley as Shawn of the Dead, but aside from zombies and jokes they are in NO way comparable.

The production values were low enough to be a distraction for one. The acting was lame for two. The story was boring for three.. ugh! I spent five bucks to rent this film and I feel totally cheated. If I had ANYTHING else to do, I never would have finished it. I was happy when the credits rolled.

Okay, I've ranted I feel better. So why a 3 star not a 1? It's not the worst movie I've ever seen. Also, there were on very seldom occasions a few laughs. Mostly the movie was just laughable though.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

This was, uhmmm, boring...
paul_haakonsen20 February 2016
I bought this movie under the assumption that it might be a zombie comedy that had something to offer. And especially since there has been a couple of very noteworthy zombie movies rearing its decaying head from Australia, New Zealand and that general area.

However, I managed to get only 30 minutes into "Last of the Living" before I had to give up entirely and find something else to watch. This movie failed to captivate me and failed to grasp my interest in the most horrible way. The movie was just so uninspiring and anything but interesting.

The 30 minutes that I watched offered no comedy, very little action in terms of zombies and the stuff usually Associated with the zombie genre. Though the characters did seem to have been thoroughly thought through and given stories. But it just wasn't enough to keep me interested.

And from what I saw of zombies in the 30 minutes, then the zombies were nothing more than low-budget zombies. You know, the type where the faces are powdered a grayish color and blackened around the eyes. I saw no special effects or anything that would usually be much welcomed in the zombie genre in terms of make-up and special effects.

If you are looking for a zombie comedy, then your money, time and effort are better spent on movies such as "Shaun of the Dead" or "Dead Alive", to mention but two of the more established movies in the zombie genre.

I have no plans to make a return trip to "Last of the Living" in order to finish watching it. No, it just didn't appeal to me in any way. So this movie will now quietly fade into oblivion on the shelves of the movie collection.

Well made but you've seen this sort of thing before
dbborroughs15 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Horror comedy about three slackers who end up hooked up with a beautiful girl who may or may not have the solution to the zombie plague.

You've seen this before, Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland come first to mind. Never mind whole sequences in the George Romero zombie films. Its the sort of film that makes you wonder why this was made when the filmmakers aren't really bringing anything new to the table, even though it kind of feels like they think they are.

Actually thats wrong, they do bring one spectacularly great thing to the table, the opening news sequence. The opening sequence of one of our heroes going through a deserted city inter-cut with news footage of riots and police and officials talking of the problem is brilliant. Its the sort of thing that raises the bar in similar films and makes you wish that the rest of the film was on that high (classic) level. After that its all down hill and while the film is amusing, it never is great again.

Worth a look for zombie fans. All others may want to think about it first.

Enjoyable movie, not a blockbuster but quite fun
facethespam8 June 2009
As long as you aren't expecting a blockbuster, you should enjoy this movie. The movie doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a zombie movie, with characters who are "the boys" in every way. If you like zombie movies, then you'll probably only read the comments to make sure that the movie isn't terrible - which it isn't.

It has fun, funny, serious, and even poignant moments. There is some character development as well. One criticism would be that the movie sometimes makes killing zombies looks easy and fun, and in other situations difficult.

The movie has good atmosphere, although not as well developed as Shaun of the Dead or 28 Days Later. The plot is not terribly strong or original though.

Entertaining low budget zombie fun
sebpopcorn7 September 2009
For a low budget movie I thought this was pretty good. The characters are entertaining and work well together and the acting is pretty good. The story moves at a fair pace and I liked the music too.

On the downside there's no real explanation as to why the three of them have survived but hardly anyone else has. If a guy with a golf club can take on half a dozen zombies it seems unlikely the situation could have spiralled so far out of control that there's hardly anyone left alive. They could have written around this pretty easily, it's a shame they didn't.

I'm guessing most of the film of the city was shot in the early hours when there was nobody around but the clean streets look unconvincing for a zombie apocalypse film. If this was a 60 million dollar movie it would be more of a problem but it didn't spoil it for me, though I thought the riot footage at the start was a bit poor and clearly depicted a riot rather than zombies attacking people.

I'm not a big fan of horror comedy but I do like zombie movies and I enjoyed this one, give it a try - it's worth a watch. The berserker move made me laugh every time.

Disappointing
QinetiQ18 May 2009
No. Not that good. I must admit I was fooled by the other (2) comments here on this movie, so I might have expected too much of it.

The start is an exact copy of 28 Days Later and soon it becomes a slapstick of how to bash a mindless/slow (badlooking) zombie in a cool way. The moment I saw the first zombie appear I knew this wouldn't do it for me. It's like a few blokes made a homemade zombie flick with some You-can-play-the-zombie friends. It never held my attention, it never got scary. And thats basically it. Some new characters are added to add..nothing, more zombies appear (I guess if you can't act you can always play a zombie) and the bashing continues. If you like boring kick-the-zombie movies, this is for you, if not just skip it.

Pretty fun movie to watch
terrencepatrix18 May 2009
If Sean of the Dead and Flight of the Concords had a love child...I think it just might be this movie.

For the most part this is a pretty fun and amusing zombie flick to watch, with a somewhat original approach to it. If you're looking for a gore fest, this movie is definitely not it...although it does have some pretty cool zombie deaths mixed in.

A quick summary of the plot: The movie starts off 6 months after the "apocolypse" and most the world is overrun with zombies. The film quickly switches to 3 guys kicking back in a mansion. As far as they know they're the only survivors around and have been spending their time traveling from mansion to mansion, drinking beer and playing video games. It actually seems like a lot of fun. While out perusing the town for a new pad they run across an attractive young lady who has a solution to the zombie issue. That's where the movie takes on it's main plot, so I won't spoil anymore.

Really what saves this movie is the camera work. It's really well done. The dialog is also one of the main focus points in this film, seeing as there is definitely a lot more talking than fighting...but if you get the humor then you'll find yourself enjoying it just as much as the violence. The other review said this movie was made for under 1 million...and I think it was pretty well spent. Overall I'd suggest giving this film a watch.

Once again, the curse of the 'unfunny comedy' strikes...
Leofwine_draca1 February 2016
LAST OF THE LIVING is an ultra-cheap zombie comedy in which a group of slackers go around and bump off members of the living dead in the wake of an apocalypse. Yes, it's a cheap derivative of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, made without any of the laughs, the wit, the gore, or indeed the technical prowess of the film-makers. And this is from a guy who doesn't even particularly like SHAUN OF THE DEAD.

LAST OF THE LIVING is a Kiwi film although it's a far cry from the solid genre fare that used to come out of New Zealand - Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD being a shining example. The whole thing is so cheap it looks like it was filmed on somebody's video camera with a group of buddies (and non-actors) standing in for the fellow cast members. There's not a single funny moment throughout the lengthy running time, and by the time we reach the end I was feeling extremely frustrated at having sat through a film so lacking in originality, a film without a single thing to say or distinguish itself from anything else in the over-crowded sub-genre of film-making.

A Most Excellent Zombie "B" Movie
siriusgazer16 November 2009
The plot sounds simple enough, three friends find themselves surviving a Zombie holocaust, where humanity are practically extinct; and find delight in a good game of Zombie-baseball, shopping at local zombie stores, finding survivors and passing their time as couch potatoes. "It sounds just like another lazy Sunday-afternoon, right." Not that simple, when you're surrounding by millions of munchies zombies out for a day on the town." I like this movie, is a sort of couch potatoes (Shaun of the Dead), 28 Days Later, and Zombieland combined. I was pleasantly surprise by a good simple story of surviving a Zombie holocaust; the acting was good and relationship between the characters great. It has a type of haunting sort of atmosphere with a good sound track, funny scenes, it lingers at the palate. If you are expecting an "A" movie, you will not find it here; but is a most excellent B zombie movie, sure to become a cult-classic. This is the type of guilty pleasure you enjoy with a couple of buddies, a few beers and some good munchies.

Surprise hit
LoganGorilla13 January 2009
Sometimes home grown can surprise you. Expectations for this low budget kiwi zombie flick set in Christchurch were not high for this reviewer, but the comedy horror feature length spoof turned up trumps recently with its premiere at the NZ Film Festival.

The cost to make the film was rumoured to have not reached the six figure mark. But it doesn't show, as this film has style, following in the tracks of Peter Jackson's early effort "Bad Taste" with its exploding sheep and kiwi humour mayhem.

It opens with a lone figure tramping deserted streets that suggests a post apocalypse setting. Zombies appear suddenly and are dispatched just as quickly in a over the top splatter manner by said lone figure. He links up with two fellow survivor mates who also casually knock off scary looking zoms with a skill saw, baseball bat, a golf club and any other weapon to hand.

The trio are an unlikely combo of geeky ex accountant Ash (Ashleigh Southam) and his two mates Morgan (Morgan Williams) and a raving rock and roller Johnny (Robert Faith). They get by as best they can in spite of the flesh munching undead menace. Then the love interest arrives in the form of gorgeous young scientist (Emily Paddon-Brown) as she seeks to find the vaccine that will save what's left of the normal world. Sexual rivalry is of course then let loose amongst the chaos.

Crazy stuff, but delightfully delivered with some neat acting, very funny dialogue, great soundtrack and judicious editing. It has that sort of zany "Flight of the Conchords" feel about it, and could easily become a cult classic. Impressive first effort, lots of stars, a madcap film well worth a visit if it comes back in the mainstream cinemas.

Really poor, tries to hard fails both in Comedy/Horror
atinder30 March 2013
I knew this not going be any where near as good or as funny as Shaun of the dead funny but I did expected to be be funny then Dance of the Dead, i Found that even funner.

This was another that been on my watch list for long time, I have tired watch before, As this very low budget movie, I get putting off.

A contagious virus is turning everyone into zombies, and the only hope for survival lies in the hands of three couch potatoes.

The movie starts just like 28 days later, when Man in mid 20's is walking around empty street and News flash of it at the start of what going on.

As Its went to meant to Horror comedy but I didn't find any of infected that scary at all, some were very stranger then others, some dodgy make up effect and it wasn't really that gory at all.

Felt same scenes were getting repeated over and over again and those scenes end up dragging at well, I do mean killing infected scenes. well.

I don't think I laughed more then once, The thing that I laugh was not really that funny but I didn't find any of other things funny at all.

The acting was really tame time from most of the cast, at the ending what was with shouting, that way, way over the top.

Ending was predictable and kind boring for zombie to end that way!

Some moments, but overall mediocre
howmer0017 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
"Last Of The Living", written and directed by Logan McMillan, is the latest entry in a long line of low-budget comedy-horror films, the most recognizable of these being Britain's "Shaun Of The Dead". LOTL could be considered a New Zealand take on "Shaun", leavened with that antipodean style and wit present in recent Kiwi comedies such as "Black Sheep" or "Eagle vs. Shark". Sadly, this film does not rise to the level of quality of its predecessor.

Since the plot has been described by others before me, I will not rehash it again here. Read the plot synopsis if you must.

For the most part, character development in this film was lacking. Great pains were taken to present Morgan, the group's defacto leader played by Morgan Williams, as some sort of macho 'God's-gift-to-women' character, but his grating bluster and cocky mannerisms seemed forced and unbelievable. The character of Ash, portrayed by Ashleigh Southam, was equally annoying; after a while, his put-upon, milquetoast persona became almost a parody of itself – it was increasingly hard to believe that someone this soft and wimpy would ever survive an onslaught of zombies. The interplay between Morgan and Ash was obviously intended to be one of the comic highlights of the film. But Morgan's constant jibes calling Ash's masculinity into question (and the latter's reluctance – until late in the movie – to defend himself) got old very quickly, and seemed out of place (frankly, if I were being threatened by flesh-eating zombies every second of the day, I would hesitate to antagonize the person helping me defend myself from them). There was a lack of spontaneity and realness, a sort of "look at me, I'm acting!" undertone through every scene these two actors were in, although it was hard to tell if it was the actors or the writing that was the cause of this.

The last male lead, Johnny (played by Robert Faith – apparently, he wasn't a friend of the director, so his movie name wasn't "Rob") was the most interesting character of the three. With his heartfelt but mediocre talents in music and combat and his "no worries" attitude, Johnny is a guy with his heart in the right place, even if his head wasn't. His character was billed as a one-dimensional "wild rock and roller", but Faith's portrayal was the most believable and multifaceted. With a deft feel for the humor in his role and great action scenes, Faith created a persona most viewers found themselves identifying with – I could easily see Johnny 'getting the girl' long before the purported 'ladies man' Morgan ever did. Obviously a more veteran actor than Williams or Southam, Faith uses his talent well, and didn't try to oversell a role that easily could have become a cliché and parody of itself.

There is little to say regarding the female lead, Emily Paddon-Brown. She is competent enough in her role as Stef. But for the most part, she is used as a plot device, either as a focus of and foil for the male characters' attentions, or as the bearer of the MacGuffin (the plot device used to drive the story, in this case being the anti-zombie vaccine she wants to transport to Stewart Island). When her usefulness to the narrative comes to an end, Stef is, quite literally, dropped from the movie with little ceremony.

The cinematography in this film was very good; the opening shots of a deserted downtown Wellington, and the lads' romp through an abandoned supermarket are just two of the superbly shot scenes that immediately come to mind. And setting selection was also excellent, with the aforementioned supermarket and the hospital scenes deserving special mention, along with long shots of the New Zealand countryside.

"Last Of The Living" wasn't intended to be a laugh-out-loud comedy, but it is a comedy nonetheless, with a light, dry New Zealand type of humor which actually works well for it, and keeps the plot moving along. As stated earlier, with the Morgan/Ash interplay falling flat, much of this humor comes from Johnny's actions and interactions with the rest of the group. In many ways, Johnny is the tent-pole character – not the central player, nor the one around whom the plot is built, but the one who sets the tone for the film and is its most relatable character. His death two-thirds of the way through the film (one of the movie's most poignant, affecting scenes) is the first major misstep, and the moment when the film begins to go off the rails. After the demise of Johnny, none of the remaining characters are able to pick up where he left off and maintain the humor balance in the movie, although they try mightily. And with two unappealing characters and one nonentity remaining, frankly there is no one left for the viewer to root for.

The film's ultimate failure occurs in the last ten minutes, when McMillan suddenly abandons what is left of that humorous tone, opting for a bleak ending that, frankly, seems to come out of nowhere. This thematic inconsistency is further underscored by the final zombie (minor spoiler alert) suddenly having the apparent ability to run like a gazelle and swim like a shark, unlike the rest of his shuffling, slow-moving zombie brethren shown throughout the film. It was as though McMillan finished writing 90% of the movie, but couldn't think of an appropriate ending to his opus.

Too bad. All of the elements were there for an excellent, engaging movie. Unfortunately, poor writing, odd directing choices and some mediocre acting dragged this film down to the level of 'so-so' at best, 'no-go' at worst. Here's hoping that Mr. McMillan (or is it "Laurance Shaw" (see the 'independent reviewer' above)?) learns from this experience as he prepares for his next film – there is talent there, waiting to be harnessed together as a team rather than as unconnected parts.

Very inconsistent
turkmick6 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This film is all over the place, one minute you have classic shambling zombies then later in the film they can run. If you get bitten by the zombie you get turned into one (sometimes instantly when the mood hits the writers even though at another stage in the film they say it takes more than an hour to turn) but if the zombies blood gets sprayed into your mouth it's fine. At one stage one of the characters is able to knock out a zombie with a punch in other scenes 3 of them can't knock one zombie with bats (although I think they where just copying Shaun of the dead in that scene).

I suppose the films supposed to be a comedy but it fails at that too, overall nothing works here it's a bad comedy, it's a bad horror and it's about as suspenseful as watching a dog lick it's own balls.

Yet another waste..
imdb-56568 August 2010
It's really sad, because the box promises so much. But, even for a low-budget production, as this clearly is, expecting actors to be able to act shouldn't be too much to ask.

It started off poor, and aside from a few grins now and again, just declined steadily from then on.

The effects are shoddy, even for a low budget. Pasty plastic glued to a mans face to make him look like a corpse, loses any shred of conviction when his hands are all fleshy and tan.

The acting is mediocre when it's at its very best, which it usually isn't. None of the characters are convincing, or even likable. The zombie kid, who couldn't stop laughing for the 3 second durations of shot, didn't help.

The violence is inconsistent. I don't mind bloody murder - it's a zombie-flick after all. But a zombie-punt goes from funny, to ridiculous, to just too much when they keep pounding for 30 seconds. And really, how hard do you have to strike someone - even a living dead - over the head with a golf club, to completely sever the top of their skull?

The music --- Well, better not to mention the music.

And the story. Well, it's a zombie movie, riddled with clichés, which in itself is fine - had they only been well executed.

And finally.. Seriously.. Fart jokes? One or two would've been okay. One or two for every 5 minutes of film, though?

In conclusion, just don't bother. Rewatch "Shaun of the Dead" or "Zombieland" instead.

This One has a Pulse
BaronBl00d14 October 2012
Oddly watchable New Zealand fare about a trio of men surviving a zombie apocalypse by playing video games, creating head-banging music, reading, exercising, and sharing and strengthening their bond by smashing, kicking, hitting, poking, prodding, etc...zombies in the "outside" world as they go from one posh residence to another. There is a lot going for this low budget production such as believable performances by a trio of basically unknowns(soon there be a fourth with the find of a pretty girl), a script that is at times, somewhat witty, inventive, and just funny but also serious at times as well, some great exterior shots of desolation in the city, convincing(for the most part) undead, and just general competence from all involved. The film has heart and some thought and does not degenerate into some butcherfest. What I like about the film best is that it was basically made for a shoestring budget but is not out and out crap. Talent can be a factor in using financial resources in a manner that can be productive. For a film of this kind it is definitely a notch above the rest - and bear in mind some of those have budgets that would be ten fold more than this film.

Ashleigh Southam killed this one
mannlichermanner19 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
At first i couldn't quite pinpoint what was annoying me so much about this movie, but then it suddenly hit me. it was Ashleigh Southam overacting his part so bad it made me hope he got killed off every time a zombie came on the screen. The rest of the movie (although a rip off) would have given me exactly what I expected (something to kill some time) if he wouldn't have been in it. Even if this movie had an original storyline the guy would still annoy me to death.

And then of course as mentioned before it is weird that they seem to have no problem bashing a group of zombies at one point then later on they cant take on one lonely zombie.

NEW ZEALAND ZOMBIES
nogodnomasters14 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts out with three men living together. The electricity is still operating even with no one to attend to the grid or power plants. Electricity is simply magic. They get bored with their current location and opt to go find a new place to live. They pile into a killer Ford and drive along until they find a church which they think is defensible. They enter the church and end up finding a female scientist and her father who has a bite mark. He dies and the four of them take off. She is part of a plan to save the world. The plan is to go to the local hospital. Get some zombie blood and process it. Fly off to a nearby island where there are fellow scientists and save the world. The guys have nothing better to do so they join her. While the infection is viral, zombie blood, which splatters all over people doesn't spread the disease, only bites from slow moving zombies with the classic one leg drag. The movie contained humor, good dialogue, and an easy to follow plot with acceptable acting. The main problem was the lack of characters. No sex or nudity.

Terrible Low Budget Zombie Flick
holyspiritdriven27 November 2012
I grabbed this movie off the shelf because of the kick ass cover art. It gave the movie a quality look but it no more into a minute of the first scene of the "couch potatoes" and it was evident this movie was filmed on a home video camera. It's strange how they actually had decent sound design on the one hand but on the other hand I feel like they just used the built in mic on their mini-DV cam to capture all the dialog. I'm an American, and while I thoroughly enjoy foreign film, the New Zealand accents were so thick it was, at times, difficult to understand the characters. As far as a zombie flick goes, this movie brought nothing new to the table and seemed like some dudes just copying zombie movies they've seen before. The zombies weren't scary and easy defeated with...a golf club? Things I did like: the heroine was cute and their car was pretty bad ass. It's too bad they didn't film the entire movie the same way they filmed the ending music video...it actually had some quality. Don't let the statement on the cover about being better than Shaun of the Dead fool you. This movie is not even close to the same class in quality, plot or humor as Shaun of the Dead.

Best of an 8 Pack
danielrose129 January 2012
I recently purchased this movie in an 8 pack of low budget horror films.

I like to watch independent movies to keep myself aware when good independent films surface. After watching a few from the pack I almost stopped. I powered through to this one and was pleasantly surprised. The writing and/or improvisation was great. The characters actually had some charisma and the story was great. To see people act the way normal "none Hollywood" people would act was refreshing and I think this has the potential for a cult following. So check it out if you are sick of Hollywood style fodder and just want a real zombie flick made by smart people.

A waste of time, unfortunately.
WisdomsHammer31 October 2019
I really liked the cinematography in this. I liked the soundtrack, for the most part, too. The acting wasn't half bad. The effects weren't the greatest but I found that easy to get past.

So why didn't I like this movie?

The script and the pacing, I think. I guess that comes down to writing and editing. The final product just didn't work.

It was unimaginative, ripping off scenes from just about every other zombie movie out there without even doing them as well as the originals. If you're going to copy, at least do it well.

It's supposed to be a comedy but it wasn't funny. I think the actors were definitely capable of comedy but they weren't given anything funny to say or do, for the most part. There was one scene that made me laugh and it didn't really involve the main leads (it had to do with the father of the woman they meet in the church).

Worst of all, it was just plain boring. There are several scenes that involve watching the main characters argue, but it's never an argument that we, as viewers, are invested in or care about, and they go on for way too long.

The best of these kinds of movies look and feel like passion projects. This looked like it was work. It didn't look like the actors had much fun making this, and the movie just wasn't fun to watch, in my opinion.

There is obvious talent here. It's too bad that it doesn't deliver.

Meh .. I've seen worse
JarfGartz27 May 2009
This movie is extremely low budget, so if that's not your thing, you should think twice before watching it.

The story was pretty weak and the zombies were a joke; they milled around so slowly that the protagonists were able to walk through them at times, striking out at any that ventured close enough. And yet, at other times, they were "pinned down" by a handful of them.

However, I enjoyed some of the music, and the characters were kind of endearing, so I ended up sticking with it to the end.

What can I say? If you have nothing better to do, this movie is not the WORST way to pass your time ..

Unimaginative so-so zombie film, but a piece of warning to its filmmakers...
Renaldo Matlin16 March 2010
I'll admit it; the fun looking DVD cover fooled me into thinking I would love this. Well that and the fact that I normally worship anything with zombies and count George Romero as my God. Add on top of that the fact that "Last of the Living" was made in New Zealand, the country that brought us cult-classics "Braindead" and "Black Sheep" and I was soon hoping this could be one of those rare low budget zombie flicks with originality, real heart and soul.

Sadly I was mistaken.

Don't get me wrong. As far as low budget zombie romps go this is an OK time filler, but with a few major complaints: the characters are just plain uninteresting. With the exception of nerdy Ash the characters come off as paper-thin and downright boring. The film opens with scenes of 'Morgan' and for a while seem to focus on him as a type of "main" hero, which I couldn't get, since he seemed like a first-rate selfish prick, not to mention a bully to his friend Ash. Then there is the annoying soundtrack, a mix between public domain Apple software sound bytes and tripe rock music probably made by some friends of the director who he is doing his darnedest to promote here. The plot is so weak that not even a pimped up old Ford Cortina helps, although I'm sure the idea of such a car seemed awesome on paper.

However, for some reason the shoddy directing, cinematography and overall production quality seem to greatly improve in the last 20 minutes. The film suddenly goes from slow-moving to fast-paced, even including some charming scene transitions! What happened there? Was it the sudden increase of an extra 40,000 dollars in the budget that the IMDb trivia talks about???

One piece of warning to the people behind "Last of the Living": It's impossible not to notice a tag line on the DVD comparing it to "Shaun of the Dead". Woha, big mistake! By doing so you are automatically setting yourself up for one hell of a beating, and some helpful advice to the filmmakers: you won't gain any fans when you start off by insulting the greatest zombie comedy ever made! Where "Shaun" was laced with originality, first-rate acting, inspired directing and classic comedy moments, "Last of the Living" is dominated by an unoriginal plot (if you can call it a plot), so-so acting, average-at-best directing and only a couple laugh-out-loud moments (which both include fart jokes).

But again, meh... being a sucker for zombie movies in general I'll give it 4 out of 10 stars thanks to the last 20 minutes and at least one credible performance from Ashleigh Southam as 'Ash' (but Bruce Campbell he ain't).
