This captivating tale of broken hearts is related by a dandyish Victorian gent sporting a snazzy handlebar mustache. As the catchy and jaunty carnivalesque song unfolds the viewer is treated to a stunning series of surrealistic visuals that are done in a marvelously stark and stylized form of avant-garde black and white animation. The images are truly strange and striking in equal measure, with the dying bird and woods full of grotesque dancing figures rating as unforgettably peculiar sights. The evocation of the Victorian period setting is quite vivid and flavorsome. Special kudos are not only in order for the experimental musical group Man Man, but also for the multi-talented Jeremy Mayhew, who wrote, directed, edited, and even did the remarkably creative special effects and similarly imaginative animation for this impressive one-of-a-kind short oddity. Very trippy for sure, but haunting and beautiful as well.
