The great adventure of one little girl!
velianne-872049 July 2018
The short film tells the story of a young Japanese girl whose father is gravely sick and cannot come out of bed. For this reason, he gives money to his daughter in order for her to go and buy him packs of cigarettes. But the girl's mother refuses this scheme and checks every time her daughter's bag for new packs, removing them and scolding her. Eventually, under her father's insistence, the daughter waits for her mother to leave and goes out on a mission to buy a new pack for her father.

The Errand was quite an enjoyable short film for me. I appreciated first of all the originality of the story. Indeed, what struck me is the fact that this story, where a little girl is allowed to buy packs of cigarettes just at a vending machine, would never have been possible to take place in my own country. In that way, the very first scene actually shocked me, before I understood for whom she was actually buying them. What I also really enjoyed is that we really feel for the little girl. For example, when she fails continuously to get a pack, I felt really sad for her thinking back on the reason why she was doing this to begin with, to make her father happy, even if she perfectly knows that it is not helping his health at all. Finally, I also like the "journey" aspect of the little girl's quest for a pack. She travels her neighborhood, meets various people and faces obstacles. Even if it might be just a small scaled journey, for such a young girl like her it is probably the biggest she's ever had to go on to.

The Pure Heart
A girl's father has a bad cough and is sick in bed because of his serious illness. However, he can't stop smoking. Therefore, he asks his little daughter to buy cigarettes.

This is a Japanese short movie. Each of the cast plays the role very naturally. Especially, I love the little girl's acting. She is very charming. I can sympathize with the scene, where the girl can't turn her father's down even though she knows that her father is telling her a lie. I believe she never wants father's death because of the cigarette. She will just want to believe her father because she loves her father with pure feelings.

This story shows me that everyone has the pure heart. I recommend this film because it is very moving that only the little girl can change her father and the family becomes happy at the end.

Heartwarming story

Warning: Spoilers
This is the heartwarming story of a family. A girl buys a pocket of cigarettes because her father asks her to buy it. However, her mother scolds her severely and takes away the cigarettes from her. The girl is worried about her father, so she tries to get cigarettes. This story expresses the emotional turmoil of a little girl, and how she overcomes this turmoil and grows by her own efforts. I was moved by the acting of a child actress, because she plays the girl who loves her father and mother naturally. Not only the little girl but also her mother loves her father, but they are in conflict about cigarettes. I think that it's really difficult what we should give priority to. It's sad that they can't understand each other though they care for the father. I like the last scene because the faces of the family shows happiness.

Great film

An amazing short film with a good life lesson and moral.

A young girl is on a mission to purchase her sick father cigarettes. She goes through many lengths to find just one cigarette for her father despite the world going against her.

I really enjoyed this short film. All of the characters were amazing as well. I particularly liked the moral and life lesson of the story. The little girl loves her father so much she goes trough a lot of trouble to find him a cigarette. But sometimes, in order to help your love ones you must do what's really best for them. I think this is a good life lesson and moral that makes this film so amazing.

A Wonderful Little Actress
AdamHawkes12 July 2013
A little girl has been buying a pack of cigarettes though she is scolded by her mother. What is her purpose in doing that? Actually, her family has a serious thing. This film is a story about a little girl who loves her family with a mental conflict in her mind.

The leading role, who I think is a girl about 8-years-old, is very good. She is a wonderful little actress. The role requires an ability to represent several emotions such as gladness, sadness, anger and confusion, but the girl performs very well. It is a pity that I have not known such a great performer until now.

In addition to this, this film has some critical messages or people around the world, such as what is really important, what we should do for someone who we love and what real family is like. Each of these is worth thinking of, therefore I'd like you to watch this film and think over them. Doing so also makes your life better than ever, I think.

This film is one of the best films for me, because not only are the actress and actor great but what it shows me is profound. It is a chance to reconsider what is significant for family to watch this film. This film might give you an answer to it.

stop smoking

A little girl wants a cigarette for her father. But when she brings a cigarette, she is always scolded by her mother, because he is lung cancer. However he wants a cigarette hardly, so she goes to buy it again as she loves him.

This is a Japanese short movie that is about affection between parents and children. I moved this film. The little girl does not know that the cigarettes connect to his death. She wants her father to be well and wants to do something for him. So she only grants his wish. Her pure heart makes me moved.

What is message of this film? This movie let me think about the effects of cigarette will bring. A schoolgirl's phrase tells everything. I can feel this video reality, thanks to the ordinary actors.

Family Bond
tt-0321329 November 2023
"The Errand" is a short Japanese movie about a family from 2007. One day, a small female elementary school student buys some cigarettes from the vending machine on her way home at the request of her father who has a serious disease but likes smoking. However, after she comes home, she is scolded by her mother for doing that.

While watching this film, I can feel the girl's strong affection for her father because she tries to get some cigarettes for him in one way or another after the cigarettes she has bought are taken away by her mother. To do that, she even asks a female high school student whom she doesn't know to give her some cigarettes in the park. However, I cannot understand why her father wants to smoke despite being in a serious state health-wise. I think almost all of the people will avoid smoking when they are in such a state.

In conclusion, although there are some strange parts like the one I just mentioned, I think this is a good film which reminds us of the family bond. Because of this, I recommend that many people from other countries also watch this film.

'You'll die if you smoke it'
safrannene22 January 2014
A young girl gets cigarettes from a vending machine. It is of course not for herself but for her father. However, hidden cigarettes are found by her mother and she is scolded. On the other hand, her sick father asks her to buy cigarettes again.

She apologizes to her father for not giving cigarettes, and to her mother for not keeping her promise. She is very confused between her unreasonable father and strict mother. However, the girl acts like a grown-up. For example, she says 'Don't tell a lie.' to her father and 'You'll die if you smoke it' to a young smoker. She always hears these words from her mother.

She has strong will, never cries and does her best. She wants to please her father but wants him to live. Both are her real feelings. So it's hard for me to see her tear at the last scene.

A little girl goes to buy cigarettes to a vending machine for her father even though her mother tells her not to do that. Her father is suffering from serious illness, so he can not buy by himself. This short film describes the little girl's conflict that she loves her father and wants to buy cigarettes for him even though of course she knows cigarettes are bad for health, especially sick people. I think the film's title Otousan no tabako (Father's cigarettes) describes the girl's conflict well. I mean that Otousan no tabako means not only her love for her father but also the thing which may cause his worse health or his death. I recommend everyone to watch this film because it describes the girl's conflict very well. People may recognize again that cigarettes are bad for health, what is more, those who smoke may feel that they should stop smoking for their daughters or beloved.

It's a heartwarming family love story
linshuli-9954729 November 2023
"Otousan no tabako" is a short film about bonding and love. This film was made in 2007.

As soon as the girl buys a pack of cigarettes, she hides it in her school bag and goes home. When she gets home, her mother is angry that she has it, but she doesn't give up and tries to go out to buy it because her father wants it. But on the way, various happenings occur. Her father wants the cigarettes, but he says he doesn't want them after she goes back home, so she tries to heal him by doing something.

I was a little unsatisfied with this film, because I wonder why the writer or director decided to deal with cigarettes if the theme is about family love. There were some possibilities not to deal with cigarettes. However, I was impressed that the girl was trying so hard to get cigarettes for her father.

This is agreat short film that includes a lot in 20 minutes, and is well worth watching.

Pure story
arkts3110 February 2014
This movie shows the dilemma of a little girl.

Her father, who is in bed because of a disease, asks her to buy cigarettes for him, but her mother tells her not to. The tiny girl is so pure that she is troubled with the conflicting requirement. However she tries to do her best to get cigarettes.

Children always do their best and that makes me feel guilty about my laziness.

The most impressive scene is that the girl reads a textbook aloud surrounded by her parents. It reminds me of my childhood. I think this movie gives you a kind of nostalgic feeling.

the errand

A girl buys s pack of tobacco for her father. She knows smoking can damage health seriously. Her father suffers from a heavy disease, but he is eager to smoke, so he asks the girl to buy tobacco. She is in a dilemma whether to get it or not. All she wants is just having fun with her father and mother like she use to have.

This is about love. It often happens people do what they were asked, because they fear about their relationship with others. However, if you know it is bad for them who you like or love, what would you do? Obey? Refuse? You might be in a dilemma. In my opinion, you must refuse. It is much better to lead a long happy life than having fun or relaxation for a moment. To concern about their real advantage is real love.

In the film, I sympathized with the girl in her suffering. I hope she could get back happiness with her family.

A girl's confusion
yfm359429 July 2013
In this film, there are three main characters: a little girl, who is the heroine of this story, and her parents. Her father is in bed because of the illness but he is a smoker, too. The keys to read this film are cigarettes and purity of the girl.

In general, small children believe what their parents say. However, the girl faces two contrary opinions. Her father says that cigarettes are good for his health so that the girl will buy them for him(In the setting of this film, they can buy cigarettes without Taspo, which is necessary when you buy cigarettes in Japan now). On the other hand, her mother argues that they kill people. I think this is a cruel situation for such a little girl. In many cases for children, their parents are the rule and learn the appropriate attitude as a human from adults. In my opinion, we must not make children feel such a contradiction. In that point I value this film because it enables us to notice the possibility of our making children confused due to our selfishness.

On the other hand, you may feel there is something lacking in the end o the story. As I mentioned above, is has a great message. However, its narrative is not so elaborate given its length.

At any rate, I hope you will see this film and receive something important.

The Errand
Enustik9 July 2018
The Errand, a short film directed by Shohei Shiozaki, tells the story of a young girl that finds herself in a difficult situation: her father, dying of lung cancer, asks her to buy cigarettes for him, but every time she tries, she is scolded by her mother. The character of the young girl is interesting, and the actress that plays her does such a good job that it is unavoidable to sympathize with her. Her journey to find a cigarette after losing the money she receives from her father is heart-warming and touching. It shows that she is able to go to incredible lengths in order to fulfill her father's "last desire", even if she knows it is something that would make his health worse. On the other hand, if the main character is well constructed and the acting is good, the plot itself is somewhat moralizing. In this sense, it was as if the film was part of a campaign against smoking. At the beginning, the family is fighting because the father wanted the young girl to buy cigarettes; and at the ending, when the father gives up on smoking, the family reunites in peace. In this sense, even if the characters are complex, the plot could have more layers of meaning, instead of a flat message.

This is the story about one family. The father is sick. He cannot give up to smoke. He really want to smoke cigarette, but he cannot go out from bet. So, he ask his daughter to buy cigarette. The daughter bought it, but her mother scolds her. He must give up to smoke. The daughter cannot understand why her father must not smoke. She worry about his father because he looks very painful, and she understand the father want to smoke. She wants her father to be fine. a delinquent girl appears to the daughter. She smokes. The daughter says to the girl "Please give me a cigarette."

I like this movie. It is because I can see love in their family, The daughter really worries about her father. I like last scene, but I cannot tell the last scene because if I tell it, it will be board for you.

I think you should watch this movie with your family.

Surprising means of buying cigarettes
f-2775314 June 2016
It is a heart-warming story with a mother,disease-suffering father and their daughter. The daughter,a lead character was asked by his father to buy a pack of cigarettes on her way home from school. Despite her mother's warning, the girl managed to bring it back home for her father. For the first place, you might be startled by the description of a girl, who is trying to purchase a pack of cigarettes if you don't get the reason for her behavior. You might presume it is her who is taking up smoke even though it is illegal. Even a few scene of the beginning is , therefore, effective and technically well-organised enough to stimulate our imaginations. However, I'm not satisfied with the very ending. It was a happy ending, the father finally giving up smoking for some reason and the girl disappointing at her father's refusal, and reading aloud the tale. Followed by the scene, the mother is coming up and joins them. They all imply the repaired family unity with the decision of the father, but I think it needs more explanation such as why father gave up smoking and why she is reading a tale.

Warning: Spoilers
A little girl, on her way home from elementary school, stands in front of a vending machine. She looks around and puts money into it. Surprisingly, what she buys is a pack of cigarettes. As soon as she arrives at her house, her mother tells her to show the contents of her backpack. Although she is reluctant to show it, at last, her mother finds cigarettes in her backpack. Her mother gets angry because this is not the first time that she buys them. Why does she go on buying them?

I think the reason why the girl buys cigarettes is very impressive. In fact, she seems not to want to buy them. however, because of the complicated reason, she decides to buy new cigarettes. Although this movie is a little cruel and makes me sad, I like this movie because it tells me fear of cigarettes and the value of family.

recommend you
Fjkkn7 June 2021
Otousan no tabako is a short film by scriptwriter Alec McAulay and director Shohei Shiozaki. Girls who are elementary students go back home together. They enjoy talking then suggest to hang out together after school. However, one of them, the main character, says that she has things to do. After saying good-bye to her friends, she checks to see if anyone is watching and buys cigarettes from the vending machine. At home, her mother notices that she buys cigarettes and then her mother takes it away from her. However, she continues to try to get cigarettes for her father.

I was really moved by this film. The girl understands how risky cigarettes are but she tries to receive her father's favor and manages to get cigarettes. Although he doesn't need it anymore at all, she read a book aloud to cheer him up. I think this story is amazing and couldn't be better. With regard to the technical aspects, I think the non-dialogue parts allows the audience to think more and captures their hearts. In short, I definitely recommend to see this.

short film
ktkt-8091217 July 2022
'Otousan no tabako' is a short film. The protagonist is a young girl. Her father is recovering at home from an illness. He is bedridden. He also uses an oxygen mask. Despite his poor health, her father wants to smoke. He gives his daughter money and asks her to buy cigarettes for him. Her mother finds out and gets very angry. Undeterred, he asks his daughter again to buy him a cigarette. She is so distressed, and finally, the daughter gives the father a cigarette. However, he immediately throws it in the trash. She then stands by her father's side and reads aloud. This film makes me think a lot. It also raises a lot of questions. For example, why does the girl start reading and writing a picture book about a big turnip? It is worth a great deal to see. I hope many people will see it.

A little girl tries to buy a cigarette
miace24 July 2014
A little girl walks with her friends. After she parts from them, she buys a cigarette by a vending machine. When she goes back to home, her mother realizes that she buy a cigarette. Her mother become anger. She has the reason that she must buy a cigarette. The set of this movie is Japan. For me, this movie is approachable. On the way to she tries to buy a cigarette, she faces many troubles. The figure that she make effort is so admirable. Unconsciously, I cheered her in my mind. Many characters have each individuality. Their existence are also important to show how difficult for her. Mainly, the viewer of this movie is the little girl. So, we can see the world by child's view. It is usual thing for adult, for child, it is one of the adventure. This movie is heartwarming one. We empathy the family, I recommend it.

Soft and quiet

Warning: Spoilers
This short film shows the deep affection of a daughter and parent toward each other. A primary schoolgirl Sara buys cigarettes on her way home. Even though her mother scolds and tells Sara to stop buying, she doesn't obey her mother. These cigarettes are all for her father who is sick in bed. She knows a cigarette is bad for her father, but she can't refuse a request for a cigarette because she loves her father. The young girl tries to get some but finally she couldn't. In the last scene, I could see the mother's love for her husband and daughter. In this film, characters' expressions were memorable. I think they talk about their feelings with little word. An atmosphere of the whole film is soft and quiet, and it improves the appearance of their expressions and acting.

a little girl's decision

Warning: Spoilers
This film starts with a scene where a young girl jumps in front of a vending machine and tries to buy cigarettes. This makes viewer not understand what is going on. The girl is scolded by her mother for buying it and told never to do so again. She understands how harmful the cigarette is because she says to a woman who a girl encountered at first that smoking will make father die. Even though she recognizes this, she tries to buy cigarette again when asked to do so by her father who seems to have a serious illness. This scene is interesting in illustrating conflicted feeling, change, and growth of her feeling. Moreover, when she throws a cigarette into the trash box, her decision makes her family get together. This scene is very touching and heartwarming. As a whole, within seventeen minutes, I was so absorbed by this film.

a difficult task for a little girl
mvrv3322 December 2021
"The Errand" starts out with a little girl buying a pack of cigarettes at a vending machine she can hardly reach. The peculiar start of the film ensures that the audience is hooked from the very beginning. When she gets home she is severely scolded by her mother who takes the pack away from her. Turns out that the girl was sent to buy the cigarettes by her bedridden father. His heavy coughing suggests that smoking is the reason for his illness. The girl seems to be aware of her father's bad state of health as well as the bad influence of the cigarettes. Nonetheless, she continuously runs his errands and tries very hard to please him. I especially enjoyed the young actress's outstanding performance. She does a great job playing the little girl who is torn between the wish to make her father happy and the urge to listen to her mother's repeated warnings. I think "The Errand" is a film that portrays human imperfections. I liked it very much, maybe because I can personally relate to the story.

Awareness rising through a deep and concerning story.
Wheepuppy2 July 2018
A little Japanese girl is confused about what is wrong and right since her father is asking her to bring tobacco for him at home, while he is lying on the bed in a very critical state of health probably induced by his smoking habits. The girl doesn't know what to do as her mother keeps on scolding her for this and, at the same time, her father begs for her to bring at least a cigarette for him. I have to say that I didn't like the way the little girl plays the role, but besides this, I find her character very powerful in the story. She is so well written that it is impossible not to emphasize with her and her dilemma. You can feel the concern for her and the situation she is facing and that does not stop when the screen goes black, you can feel the sadness inside your body even after the film ends. I also would like to comment that I enjoyed the cinematography of the movie, nice shots, nice rhythm, beautiful takes that make it possible to conceive of the film as a united piece of work. Realistically, it makes you stick to the story even though the sadness and the way the tragedy develops can be predicted from the very beginning. I see this movie as a very nice way to raise awareness against tobacco and its harmful effects on human health.

This short movie is about a quest that a little girl seeks tobacco for her father
saoatama10 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This short movie is about a quest that a little girl seeks tobacco for her father who is addicted to smoking although he is suffering from lung desease I'm really surprised when the girl buys a box of tobacco. Character of the father is real. He deadly wants to smoke although if tobacco is almost killing him. He is typical adict. All he thinks is himself at first. A genuine good father would not make his 10 years daughtor buy tobacco in a plaintive voice that makes her feeel gilty as if she suffer her father because she does not give him tobacco. It is illigal to sell tobacco to nonages in Japan. This movie, although, is set in a decade ago Japan, he should be blame ethycally. It is agony for her. It is difficult for children to know which parents they should listen to. Finally the father chenges his mind. But I don't think it is last time he asks tobacco. Adictation is hard to cure like lung cancer. The daughter has a chance to notice that tobacco kills people, but he doesn't. I don't know why his disire to tobacco simply disappear. Maybe because the daughtor comes home late and he is anxious her. Maybe other reasons.
