"If not mad, maddening"
evening111 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This whimsical documentary seems more about the eccentricities of the newly crowned king than about any applicable mental-health diagnosis.

In contrast to his always-decorous mother, who died this week at age 96, the erstwhile Prince Charles had long aired an array of unorthodox opinions on such topics as religion -- "He wants to be the defender of all faiths" -- medicine ("Since 1982, he has been arguing British doctors need to treat not just the body, but the human soul"), and architecture (check out Poundbury on Wikipedia).

He's also indulged an interest in drama -- strutting the stage in the likes of both "Macbeth" and clownish roles -- and been quoted on such off-color topics as tampons.

We learn here that Charles had been strongly influenced by the controversial Lawrence van der Post of South Africa. ("Some people say he's responsible for the wackier side of the prince," notes journalist Penny Junor.)

Indeed, all the publicity has taken a toll. A 2004 poll revealed that 41% of respondents -- of what nationality isn't mentioned -- favored Prince William to assume the crown when the queen died, compared to only 38% for his father.

We learn here that although Charles "was born to sit on the throne," he was a lonely child often in the care of nannies. (Of Her Royal Highness, Ms. Junor notes, "She's really a woman who is much more comfortable with animals.") Charles went on to spend years in analysis.

Of course we also hear about his love life -- notably, the 34-year delay of his marriage to Camila Parker-Bowles because he first wed the type of woman he was supposed to, Lady Diana Spencer.

"Charles had to do his royal duty and marry a virgin who could produce an heir," we're told. "The marriage was soon in trouble, and the public has always blamed Charles for its failure."

One wishes Charles well in his historic role. The path that he takes should be nothing if not unique.
