"Don't let him in!"
IFC Midnight has released another full trailer for for their terrifying horror movie The Babadook. I loved this flick, and I can't wait to see it again. This is a movie that I'll enjoy showing people that have never seen it before, and I'll watch it as much as I have to. I'm going to have to throw this movie into the list of Halloween movies that I watch every year. Too bad this isn't coming out until after Halloween.

For a while now I've been toying with the idea of doing an article based around “Things Horror Movies should Stop doing." I didn't really know how to frame it or under what terms I should define its primary message, but then I started to watch this film Don't Let Him In.
As I watched, I realized that the things that currently plague the genre are being used religiously in this film and without remorse.
So, bear with me as I handle this review in an unorthodox fashion. I'll cover the film as I comment on the things that are hindering the genre as a whole.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment.
**here be some minor spoilers.
Director: Kelly Smith.
Writers: Kelly Smith and Chris Andrews.
Cast: Sophie Linfield, Sam Hazeldine, and Gordon Alexander.
Be careful who you pick up on the highway while on holiday. Make sure you stop for a hot blonde but not a grizzled lout. Otherwise, your time away from work will be full of murder and prose of trees needing "to be fed." This is the lesson that Don't Let Him In teaches horror fans as Kelly Smith's first film is confined by its budget while still finding a way to use psychology to tragic effect. As well, a small cast, one primary setting and only a few camera tricks keep this picture in indie territory with the film slightly formulaic. The film is slightly conservative overall.

British director Kelly Smith's Don’t Let Him In (2011) is a strange movie. Starting from the title, which echoes that of Matt Reeve's vampire horror-remake Let Me In (2010) – you’ll be forgiven for wondering whether this is a parody. However, Don't Let Him In transpires to be a serious and gore-packed horror film with lots of good intentions – but, also, lots of nonsensical moments which verge on the laughably absurd more often than not.
