I've watched this episode around Christmas time on DVD since I was 6 years old. Sure it's not anything special, but it's a perfectly fine little adventure featuring Gumby and Pokey stopping Scrooge from ruining Christmas. The animation and style are classic Gumby and there's a couple good laughs mostly from Pokey. Pretty standard stuff.
Am I missing something? Was there some egregious scene that was edited out of the version I saw? What could possibly justify such a low rating for this episode when it's better than some of the more derivative and dull Rankin/Bass specials at the very least?
Is it strange to feature Scrooge as an outright villain since he's reformed in a Christmas Carol? Perhaps, but you do still hear people use "Scrooge" as a pejorative even so. Is it because Gumby and Pokey never actually meet Santa or engage with the holiday that much? Sure that would have been nice, but not exactly required for such a short premise. Is it the ending where Santa picks up the wrong sack of toys? It's a little frustrating, but it's treated lightheartedly and it isn't something to get that worked up over.
I just can't see anything that merits such a low rating, especially in the context of other Gumby episodes. There's nothing here that isn't present in plenty of other episodes and yet those are all given 6 or 7 star ratings. What am I missing?
