Al Pacino and Dan Stevens have teamed up for exorcism horror film “The Ritual” from director David Midell.
XYZ Films has acquired worldwide rights to the feature, with plans to release it theatrically in 2025 and arrange international distribution at the upcoming Cannes market.
“The Ritual” was written by Midell and Enrico Natale and produced by Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen round out the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Ritual” follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

While Sony’s Spider-Verse movies Madame Web and Morbius both laid eggs at the box office (to put it mildly), another live-action franchise from the studio has been minting money – the Venom films. Despite pretty awful reviews, the first movie made $856 million worldwide. The sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, only made just over $500 million (still a lot of moolah), but that was due to opening during the pandemic (it was actually the third highest-grossing movie of the year). With the third film pretty much guaranteed to make money no matter how it fares with critics, Sony is moving it up slightly on the release calendar, with it now set for October 25th, 2024. The movie also has a new title, Venom: The Last Dance.
This pre-Halloween weekend propelled Five Nights at Freddy’s to a huge opening, and Sony is no doubt hoping to score with horror audiences as well as superhero fans.

The Mothership, a Halle Berry sci-fi film, was scrapped due to “lots of production issues” according to Netflix boss Bela Bajaria.
Update: Just a little more detail on the scrapping of the Netflix sci-fi flick, The Mothership. Yesterday, The Wrap published a report with some quotes from Netflix content boss Bela Bajaria about the matter, but that report was suddenly taken down.
Since then, The Hollywood Reporter has put up its own report, which offers a bit more context. Bajaria made the comments at the streaming giant’s press event, Next on Netflix, in which it also unveiled its slate of upcoming films and shows. Squid Game season two, Beverly Hills Cop, that sort of thing.
In a brief snippet dedicated to The Mothership, THR quotes Bajaria as saying the film was scrapped due to “lots of production issues and story issues.”

The Tom Hardy-starring actioner Havoc, from Gareth Evans, wrapped production back in 2021 yet as it stands, isn’t slated to debut until 2025.
Yesterday, Netflix released a swathe of movies set to debut in 2024 and well, it looked like you’d expect it to given that the company is already putting its plan to shrink its annual movie slate into action. However, in a slimmed-down list there was one film in particular that was missing, causing an eyebrow or two to raise in puzzlement.
The film in question (as first noticed by World of Reel) is Gareth Evans’ Havoc, a movie that was shot all the way back in 2021 and yet still doesn’t seem to have secured a release date on Netflix. An action thriller, directed by the filmmaker behind The Raid, starring Tom Hardy and shot in Wales? Yes, please. we’d like this one just as soon as it’s ready,...

XYZ Films has acquired North American sales rights to the horror-thriller “Deus Irae,” the debut feature of Argentine filmmaker Pedro Cristiani, and will introduce the film to buyers at the upcoming AFM. Variety has been given exclusive access to the film’s bone-chilling trailer (see below).
Premiering at the Mar Del Plata Film Festival in November, “Deus Irae” follows Father Javier, a priest living a fractured existence. On one side, he assists families who claim to have witnessed miracles, and on the other he belongs to a trio of excommunicated priests who hunt the possessed down to exorcize them under their own terms: with Bibles, fire and shotguns.
But when the only way to crush Evil is by becoming something even worse, he must question how much of his own humanity — or sanity — he’s willing to sacrifice in order to defeat the Devil.

While there have been plenty of celebrated moments in which actors and other celebrities have stepped forward as openly gay, the move toward better representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in Hollywood is no excuse for poor manners. One A-list actor has clarified that media questions about his sexuality are unacceptable.
Here’s what Tom Hardy had to say.
Tom Hardy has faced ‘inelegant’ questions about his identity

According to the star, acting serves as an outlet for some of his most destructive impulses: “Acting is really a mixture of bulls**tting and manipulation and the study of action-reaction. Exclusive: Fox Entertainment and Bento Box are developing an animated comedy called Havoc! from veteran television writer Michael Glouberman and CRE84U Entertainment, the production company co-founded by Nancy Cartwright (The Simpsons), Monica Gil-Rodriguez (Borrego) and Jaime Aymerich (producer of Julie and the Phantoms).
Havoc! is described as the story of a brilliant, egotistical super-villain who starts from scratch in his latest attempt to take over the world, forming a ragtag team of eccentric misfits to help him on his quest. Together, they navigate the challenges of the world around them, which is far more difficult when you’re working out of the basement of your one-bedroom apartment.
Glouberman is a Peabody-winning writer who has written for shows such as The Neighborhood, 2 Broke Girls, Malcolm in the Middle, and 3rd Rock From the Sun. He recently served as a consulting producer on CBS’ How We Roll. He is represented by...

SXSW 2023 had several big movies which took up a lot of space in the larger conversation surrounding the festival. From the world premiere of "Evil Dead Rise" to the closing night unveiling of Ben Affleck's long-awaited return to the director's chair in the form of "Air" (which I reviewed), there was much to talk about. But film festivals such as this are often a great place to discover the next big thing. One film that may well pop coming out of the festival this year? Director Aristotle Torres' "Story Ave," which took home the Special Jury Award for Cinematography.
Critics have been very kind to the film following its premiere. It tells the story of a South Bronx native, Kadir Grayson (Asante Blackk), a very talented teenage artist who is floored by the grief of losing his younger brother. Kadir runs away from home and escapes, attempting to become...

This post contains mild spoilers for the first season of "Wednesday."
After its first season became a surprise smash hit for Netflix, it's no surprise that more "Wednesday" is already on the way. The streamer has ordered a second season of the goth girl reimagining of "The Addams Family," and while fans wait around, questions about where the show will go next are already beginning to pile up. Will Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) abandon the love triangle and possibly strike up a romance with her roommate and bestie Enid (Emma Myers)? Who started stalking the psychic teen in the finale's final moments? And of course: Will our favorite members of the Addams family make return appearances?
The last question was one /Film's Ryan Scott asked actor Luis Guzmán when he caught up with the "Story Ave" star ahead of that movie's festival premiere this week. Scott asked Guzmán if audiences should...

Following in the footsteps of its Nordic neighbors, Finland is fast becoming a destination of choice for foreign co-productions, not least thanks to its up-front cash-back tax incentive introduced in 2017.
Despite a slight drop in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, figures show a 40-plus growth of the audiovisual industry in the past five years, distributed evenly between co-production and service production.
In addition to the national rebate of 25, productions can get up to 40 incentive money thanks to top-ups from regional film commissions.
Other support mechanisms include public broadcaster Yle and the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture (Avek), as well as a growing number of private investors such as VOD platform Elisa Viihde and Aurora Studios, which are working actively on getting Finnish content out to the world.
One of the turning points in international co-productions came in 2020 with a Hollywood film entirely shot in Finland. Riley Stearns’ “Dual,” which went...

There’s a chance Tom Hardy and Zazie Beetz will team up to star in Lazarus, a serial killer drama series in early development at Apple TV+. I said, “there’s a chance” because the project is, technically, “nearing development,” according to Deadline. In other words, the ink still needs to be dry, and deals are still in the works. Lazarus is a co-production between A+E Studios and Range Studios, with plans to sell the package to Apple.
Based on the Joona Linna book series by Lars Kepler (pseudonym for Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril), Lazarus gives off The Silence of the Lambs vibes while telling a dark tale about murder and a search for the truth.

Every World of Warcraft expansion introduces buffs, nerfs, and changes to classes that impact their overall power level. Dragonflight is no different. However, Dragonflight happens to include a few additional changes that make it one of the most impactful WoW expansions in recent memory.
Thanks to the expansion’s new (or revamped) skill tree system, nearly every class in Dragonflight has “enjoyed” sweeping changes that have impacted their standing in the PvE meta. Granted, some powerhouse classes remain as strong as ever, but it’s clear that the Dragonflight team intended for this expansion to drastically change Shadowlands‘ frustratingly complacent class meta. Thankfully the new expansion manages to do just that.

Charades describes the offbeat title as “Gremlins meets Home Alone meets National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” It follows a typical American family who inherit a farm in the Norwegian mountains and cross paths with a tricky creature from Nordic folklore, the Barn Elf.

Now that WoW Dragonflight‘s pre-patch update has finally been released, players can get their first taste of the expansion that some hope will “save World of Warcraft.” It remains to be seen if the expansion will live up to the hype, but the early changes the update offers already have players scrambling for the best class builds.
Since Dragonflight utilizes a dynamic talent tree rather than a (mostly) set path of available talents, building classes in WoW is as complicated as it’s been since the game’s earliest days. That new talent tree system does its job by introducing a wide variety of build options, but it may leave some players (especially new and returning players) suffering from too many options. That’s...

It was 25 years ago when Shawn Michaels and Triple H helped spur change in WWE as founding members of D-Generation X. Triple H took lead on creative from Vince McMahon earlier this year. Michaels remains his righthand man under the title of senior vice president of talent development creative. The Hall of Famer took the reins of the Nxt, which had undergone quite an evolution. We caught up with Michaels hours before last week’s Dx reunion on Raw and ahead of Halloween Havoc to discuss the future of the brand. The story goes, guys like you and Triple H went to Vince McMahon 25 years ago explaining that WWE needed a change. Fast-forward to now and you’re in these top...

As recently reported, Marvel Studios has tweaked a good-sized chunk of its upcoming release schedule, shifting the release dates of five confirmed movies and taking one unannounced one off the calendar for now. The films that are moving include some biggies like Fantastic Four and Avengers: Secret Wars, but the whole thing – because any MCU moves tend to have a domino effect – seemed to start with the studio’s reboot of Blade being shot out of its November 2023 berth all the way to September 2024.
That was precipitated by the departure of director Bassim Tariq from the project, less than two months before production was scheduled to start, along with reports that the film’s screenplay needed quite a bit of work. Clearly Blade – which was first announced way back in July 2019 when star Mahershala Ali walked onstage wearing a hat bearing the movie’s title – is in a bit of a rough spot right now.

Tom Hardy channeled a little bit of Bane from “The Dark Knight Rises” and a whole lot of Tommy Conlon from “Warrior” when he entered a martial arts tournament over the weekend. As reported by The Guardian, Harder was a surprise competitor at the 2022 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Championship in Milton Keynes, England. The actor entered the competition under his real name, Edward Hardy, and won the gold prize.
“Everyone recognized him, but he was very humble and was happy to take time out for people to take photographs with him,” a spokesperson for the event told The Guardian. “It was a real pleasure to have him compete at our event.”
Hardy faced off against martial arts veteran Danny Appleby in the tournament’s semi-final match. Appleby called Hardy a “genuinely a really nice guy.”
