Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let’s take a look back at all 11 of Anderson’s films, ranked worst to best.
Anderson made his directorial debut with “Bottle Rocket” (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) — well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “Birdman.” He...

Last year’s strikes can take credit for some of this nostalgia: With distributors forced to delay films, theaters are desperate for product. However, desperation is not the only mother of this invention. A24, Neon, and other specialty distributors are treating re-releases as a way to reach younger audiences.
Last year, Neon re-released Park Chan-wook’s 2003 film “Oldboy” to $2.1 million worldwide. At a CinemaCon panel April 8, Neon distribution president Elissa Federoff credited its success to a young audience eager to see it on a big screen for the first time. “What is old is new for these younger audiences,” she said.

Steve Carell is ready for a vacation after lending his dulcet tones to Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 and John Krasinski’s upcoming family comedy If. Thankfully, Netflix has a plane ticket with Carell’s name on it, so long as he’s willing to join the cast of The Four Seasons, a forthcoming comedy series led by Tina Fey.
The Four Seasons, a retread of the 1981 Universal movie of the same name, is a co-creation between Fey, her 30 Rock co-star Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Details about Carell’s character remain a mystery, though the cast list for Alan Alda’s 1981 comedy could provide some clues. In 1981’s The Four Seasons, three couples vacation together every season. After one couple divorces, feelings of betrayal and more spawn criticisms of one another, but the things that keep them together are stronger than those that might tear them apart. Alan Alda directed and wrote the 1981 version,...

Liev Schreiber is getting candid about what he’s learned about fame over the years, saying that it alone won’t make people truly happy.
The Emmy-nominated actor shared in an interview with Haute Living magazine, published online Thursday, that after decades in the entertainment industry, he realized the importance of working on projects that he’s actually passionate about.
“I work for hire, as they say, and like to make money,” he explained. “I have a growing family. The older I get, the more I think I want it to matter when I work. Of course, it doesn’t always — in fact, it rarely does — but it’s nice when it does, when one of your jobs means something to people. That feels good, like the job does what it was supposed to do in the beginning, which is to connect you to people.”

The musical fantasy film Cats, released in 2019, turned out to be a box-office bomb despite the big names attached to it. To start with, the movie was based on American composer and impresario of musical theatre, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s eponymous Broadway musical.

Webber’s Broadway musical Cats has impressed millions of fans over the years. However, the movie adaptation failed to bring the same magic to the screens and became a huge disappointment for the composer. SNL 1975 is the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live. It depicts the chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, counting down the minutes in real time to the infamous words, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”

This article contains spoilers for the entire season of "3 Body Problem."
Against all odds, a new adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel "The Three-Body Problem" is finally here and it truly lives up to its billing as the nerdiest series of the year. Readers know full well just how deep in the weeds the original story can get, as author Liu Cixin oftentimes spends entire passages breaking down the finer points of astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and other heady Stem topics that definitely aren't for the faint of heart. It's to the writer's credit that even the driest of subject matter still provides a foundation for one of the most entertaining epics in all of fiction, made up of a full trilogy of books collectively titled "Remembrance of Earth's Past," thanks in no small part to his commitment to getting the science right wherever possible. In short, Cixin envisions an...

Update: the first poster for and a new image from Serpent’s Path are below, courtesy Cinefil, which lists the French release date as June 14. Sounds like a Cannes premiere to us!
Few directors loom over 2024 like Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who’s expected to debut two films these next twelve months. We just learned of Chime, a genre-bending Japanese feature, and for some time have anticipated Serpent’s Path, a remake of his (fantastic) 1998 horror thriller that’s set to star Damien Bonnard and Ko Shibasaki (The Boy and the Heron). Today brings a major update courtesy the financier Tax Shelter, who’ve shared three stills featuring Mathieu Amalric (previously of Kurosawa’s Daguerrotype) and Claire Denis regular Grégoire Colin, while further digging has revealed the involvement of Michaël Vander-Meiren.
Though it had been reported this new Serpent’s Path (perhaps officially subtitled La vengeance du serpent) would be female-led, Tax Shelter’s synopsis...

He may not have walked away with an Oscar this year, but Jeffrey Wright is hot off the acclaim of his Academy Award-nominated film American Fiction and has been reported by Deadline to be joining Denzel Washington for Spike Lee’s upcoming remake of the Akira Kurosawa film High and Low. The remake of the 1963 crime thriller will come from a joint production from Apple and A24 Films. It is not yet announced what role in the film that Wright will be portraying as of yet.
In addition to American Fiction, Wright also starred in the Oscar-nominated film Rustin for Netflix. He appeared in last year’s Asteroid City from Wes Anderson, who he also worked with on The French Dispatch. He would garner three Emmy nominations for his role as Bernard Lowe on HBO’s Westworld. Hot on the heels of his first Academy Award nomination for his lead role in American Fiction, Jeffrey Wright has been set to join Denzel Washington and Ilfenesh Hadera in Spike Lee’s High and Low, an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller, for Apple and A24.
Details as to his role are under wraps.
Loosely based on the 1959 novel King’s Ransom, written by Evan Hunter under the pen name Ed McBain, the original High and Low follows a shoe company executive who becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. It’s unclear how closely Lee’s film will hew to the original storyline.

While he’s obviously famous for his celebrated acting career, Ethan Hawke is still a notable writer/director, as well as an author, stage actor, and more. Having just finished up the docuseries, “The Last Movie Stars,” in 2022, Hawke’s latest narrative directorial effort is “Wildcat,” based on the short stories of writer Flannery O’Connor. Sunday saw the 96th Annual Oscars ceremony broadcast live across the world, and for UK audiences it saw the show broadcast on ITV. There is lots to be said about this year’s Oscars, from winners and losers, to poor broadcasting panels – it is safe to say the award season gave us everything we’re used to.
For the UK the show has found a new home. Previously playing exclusively on Sky, this year it was broadcast by ITV. When the news of this broke it was a welcome change to many viewers across the UK, as for years the exclusivity of Sky has left the award show inaccessible for many film fans. Now, the new home for the awards show has some things it needs to get right, ultimately to provide insight and entertainment, throughout the breaks in between the Oscars broadcast. Wes Anderson Shares What His Oscar Acceptance Speech Would Have Been, And Why He Couldn't Deliver It
During this year's Academy Awards, at least one longstanding wrong was finally righted. Even as someone who's generally found Wes Anderson's work to be somewhat hit or miss, it's always felt like a serious oversight that the acclaimed filmmaker had yet to win a single Oscar. You're telling me the guy behind "The Royal Tenenbaums," "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and "The French Dispatch" could only muster a grand total of seven nominations over the course of 20+ years? Poppycock, I say!
Well, that ignominious streak finally ended this past Sunday. But while Anderson's long-overdue win came in the live-action short film category for "The Wonderful Life of Henry Sugar," he wasn't even in attendance to accept his award. Some viewers may have interpreted his absence as an intentional thumbing of the nose towards a voting body that hasn't exactly shown him much love over the decades, but...

"Drive-Away Dolls" may be fresh out in theaters, but the wild (and wildly entertaining) road trip comedy from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke has already reached one destination quicker than expected: it's now available on digital platforms.
If you missed your chance to catch "Drive-Away Dolls" in cinemas -- which, given the lackluster box office impression it made during its late February debut, wouldn't be surprising -- you can still watch the ribald queer comedy from the comfort of your living room for about the price of two matinee tickets. The movie is currently available to rent or own on premium video-on-demand platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and Google Play. Each platform seems to be offering a 4K Ultra HD rental option for $19.99, while some also include a purchase price of $29.99. When it comes to the film's rollout on the home market, though, "Drive-Away Dolls" still has some road left to travel.

Wes Anderson took home his first-ever Academy Award on Sunday night (March 10th), winning the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, one of four Roald Dahl adaptations he made for Netflix in 2023. Now, the streaming giant has announced a repackaging of the four short films into an anthology entitled The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, due out March 15th.
In addition to The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Anderson and Netflix’s The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison round out the titular “three more.” Each short pulls from a star-studded pool of actors, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, and more appearing and reappearing throughout the collection. What’s more, the anthology will feature an original song by frequent collaborator Jarvis Cocker, as Anderson revealed in an official statement (via TheWrap).

Wes Anderson was not in Los Angeles on Sunday night to accept his Oscar for Best Live-Action Short Film. But it turned out he had a pretty good excuse. The filmmaker was in Germany, prepping his next film, “The Phoenician Scheme,” which is set to begin shooting (checks pocket watch quirkily) today!
The writer-director-aesthete did send a message via Netflix, the producers of the award-winning “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” one of four shorts based on Roald Dahl stories currently streaming on the platform.
“If I could have been there, I (along with [producer] Steven Rales) would have said “Thank you” to: the family of Roald Dahl, the team at Netflix, Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Ralph [Fiennes] and Ben Kingsley and Dev [Patel] and Richard [Ayoade] and Bob [probably cinematographer Robert Yeoman] and Adam [Stockhausen, Anderson’s long time production designer] and Jeremy [Dawson, producer] and John [Peet, producer] and Jim [yeah, we don’t know] and Rich [not sure] and Jim and Polly [this is probably a shout-out to nm0000985 autoJames L.

Wes Anderson has won an Academy Award for the live-action short, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, marking the very first time the acclaimed director has actually won an Oscar.
In the past, Anderson has been nominated for seven Oscars — first with 2001’s The Royal Tenenbaums — but has never won. Some of his films have received Hollywood’s highest accolade, like when Grand Budapest Hotel took home four awards at the 2015 Oscars, but in those cases, even though Anderson’s films won awards, the director himself was not involved in the award.
Now, with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, though, Anderson is a proper Academy Award-winner. He was not at the ceremony itself, but the award was accepted on his behalf by presenters Issa Rae and Ramy Youssef.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar premiered last September, and is based on the 1977 short-story-of-the-same-name by Roald Dahl. With a runtime of only 37 minutes,...

After eight nominations for six different films he has made, director Wes Anderson has finally won his first Oscar.
Receiving the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short for his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” seems unconventional for both the category, which normally awards emerging filmmakers, and Anderson himself, who was best known till this point for directing features such as “Asteroid City” (which happened to also be in awards contention this season.)
His win was over fellow nominees “The After,” from director Misan Harriman, “Invincible,” from director Vincent René-Lortie, “Knight of Fortune,” from director Lasse Lyskjær Noer, and “Red, White and Blue” from director Nazrin Choudhury.
Anderson’s Oscar achievement comes as a bit of a full circle moment for the auteur, coming just over two decades since his career as a professional filmmaker kicked off with the premiere of his short “Bottle Rocket...

Well, everyone, the winners for the 22nd Annual Golden Schmoes for the year 2023 are in. As expected, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer walked away the big winner, earning nine Schmoes. It took home most of the big prizes, including Best Movie, Actor, Supporting Actor, Director, Screenplay, Poster, Trailer, Line of the Year and Best Sequence. While an excellent showing that beat the seven wins Everything Everywhere All At Once took home last year, it still falls short of our all-time winner here at the Schmoes, Nolan’s own The Dark Knight, which won an amazing 12 awards.
Otherwise, the winners were an eclectic mix. Godzilla Minus One, which is now widely considered the greatest Kaiju movie ever made, took home three awards, including Best VFX, which is impressive considering how small its budget was compared to the competition. Third place was an interesting tie, with John Wick: Chapter 4, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,...
