Great episode

Without giving anything away this was a fun episode and the ending was shocking cause I thought "that person " was the murderer. Best of all they end with a Del Shannon song.

It Ain't Right Yet

When the gang is threatened if they don't come up with a final podcast, they realize their lives are in danger, they work like crazy to put a lid on everything. Or face consequences. The episode ends with a startling discovery. Or couple of them. We are also introduced to a set of four groupies for the podcast.

This show continues to be a gem for Hulu. Could the writing and comedy be a little bit sharper? Sure, but the style and blend of laughs and intriguing mystery is really working.

Yeah well...

Not gonna lie. I am hooked on this show. Even the theme song is spot on. The writing, acting, setting and in the background the theme song gives it a great vibe. I like how this show shows it from different angles.

Hope it doesn't just stick with one season.

What happened?

Get yourself some dip and pizza rolls, because we're deep-diving here, Arconiacs! It's fair to say this show has achieved self-awareness. Look at how the Arconiacs mirrors Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. As recently as Only Murders In The Building Season 1 Episode 4, they were fawning over Cinda Canning's podcast "All Is Not OK In Oklahoma." Fandom is a strange beast. If you're here reading this review, it's safe to say you're a fan of the show. Thanks to the internet and social media, it's easy to connect with other fans -- obsessing over little details, questioning motives, embracing red herrings. The title of the episode is "Fan Fiction." One of the most popular types of fan fiction is the "self-insert" genre, where a fan writes themselves into the story so they can interact with their favorite characters.

This is our self-insert episode. Let's face it, the Arconiacs are us. Not every show is audacious enough to poke fun at its fans while simultaneously paying tribute to them, but we love it, so we're here for it. By giving the episode's voiceover narration to Sam (Jaboukie Young-White), it's almost as though we're in the story. Our theories carry weight after all and our critiques are validated. The way Paulette (Ali Stroker) rolls her eyes at the Sting cameo -- let's face it, that was pretty real! It's a nice wink to the audience, letting us know you can still be a fan of something even if you're critical of it from time to time. Meta comedy isn't necessarily funny for its own sake, but this show has always leaned into it instead of shying away. It's a huge part of the appeal. Enough about us though, let's get to what actually happened in the episode! He's still wickedly funny, but the tone has changed. He's a monster. At least he loves his son. The inclusion of Jan in the investigation is clearly useful, but Oliver and Mabel are strangely at odds with her. Are they still on edge from their traumatic encounter with the Dimases? Are they jealous that she's going to take Charles away from them? The Dimases are guilty of grave-robbing and Zoe's death. They are no longer a danger to the trio. But there is still a murderer somewhere in the building -- and now Jan has been threatened and attacked. Winnie was poisoned. Tim was poisoned. In the final shot, Jan is bleeding from a wound, but the M. O. of the "warning" note and the unlocked apartment door suggests a similarity there. Tim's killer has to be someone who knows the ins and out of the Arconi -- someone IN THE BUILDING. If not a resident, perhaps a staff member?

A little too easy, but good

Warning: Spoilers
It wasn't hard to figure out what the major plot points of this episode were going to be. The filler between them is still very much entertaining. You just knew they couldn't be wrapping it up with two whole episodes left. Nevertheless, the twist at the end does build the anticipation for the final two episodes.

Good & meh

Enjoyed the episode with the multiple layers except where Charles & Jan hook up & he spills his guts about the case then she inserts herself into things. I really liked the dynamics Charles, Oliver & Mabel had going. Surprises at multiple times.

Fan Fiction

Warning: Spoilers
I really did like how Charles, Oliver's and Mabel's podcast attracted a fan base.

They sit outside the Arconia waiting for the next podcast.

The type of fans that frequent IMDB these days. They give any show they like even if it is effluent 10/10 or if it's woke then it is 1/10!

Maybe Steve Martin anticipated fandom for this show and poked fun at it. To be fair Martin as the co-writer of the show does an about turn and pull the fans in as part of the detective work for the podcast. A neat trick an it added to the fun.

So now an expanded team which includes Jan and Oscar go after Teddy Dimas and his son.

The Dimas's have warned off Oliver and Mabel to wrap up the podcast or it will be curtains.

Maybe the ending was too neat, after all there are still two episodes left.

A little too deep in the self-reference
fredistreese5 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked the episode, but two things made me enjoy less than I could, one of them is the whole self-reference, with the fans. A little bit is funny, but I feel like they took it too far. The other thing was the knowledge of the season having 10 episodes, so I knew they couldn't wrap everything in this one. Still, can't wait for the next episode.

More blackmail ?
AvionPrince168 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So the end of the podcast maybe ? So Mabel and the old get blackmailed by theo father and threat us about to end the podcast . So our three characters get together again and each of them tell more about the investigations: how tim Kono get blackmailed and what they will do now ? Stop the podcast or reveal the truth despite the risk of Theo and his father ? I mean the episode have still interesting moments and the revelations too . Jan is in danger . We know also who give the phone of Kono its the police woman. So they finally give the proof to make guilty the father and his son . But they learned that maybe there is an other killer : i loved the revelations and that things make it pretty interesting and pleasant to follow until the end . Love the mysteries arround the case and the fact that Theo and his father are not only the killers make the case open again and know they need to find the other killer who killed Tim Kono by poison .Need to see more.
