Changing of the guard

Warning: Spoilers
As I rewatch this particular storyline with Chip and Polly I have to remind myself that at the same time All In The Family is starting to hit it's stride . It's almost impossible now to imagine both shows could coexist but they did . Family life with a similar newlywed couple but vastly different. MTS seems at best quaint but lacking edge. AITF is tackling issues the other avoids and more often hilarious sometimes quiet dramatic. MTS is at times amusing other times cringing. Polly does indeed attend college while Gloria enters the work force. Working at a department store one of the only workplaces that actively recruited women at the time and regardless of education level. They also live with Gloria's parents. MTS is one of the last of it's kind AITF is one of the new breed . This particular episode sees Chip and Polly return from their elopement and honeymoon and move into the dorm . Initially there is some excitement but a little sadness at the new couple leaving home but by the end all is better. Polly's father is stubborn but his hurt is understandable. He isn't ultimately the monster he appears to be . Chip and Polly arrive at the Douglas home for dinner lifting the spirits of Ernie , Dodie , Steve, Barbara and Uncle Charlie.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is about the most disliked character ever on my 3 sons, yet very misunderstood. He is Tom, Polly's father brilliantly played by Norman Alden. Even Steve Douglas isn't crazy about him. After Pand C return from their honeymoon he still won't talk to Polly. He's just too hurt.Chip finally visits him and explains how much he's hurting Polly.. He visits Polly and sees how what his pride has wrought. His complete breakdown shows he knows he was really wrong and will visit Polly probably goodly amount of time. Norman Alden was a professional character actor who showed his talents playing Polly's Father

CHIP AND POLLY BACK HOME.

I agree with the last reviewer. Yes, the writers of ALL IN THE FAMILY, which would premier not too long after this episode, may have taken some (serious) notes from episodes of this classic show. Let's face it, MY THREE SONS was generational, having been on the air for years and hit a wide variety of topics, though on the lighter side.

Chip and Polly return to LA and get situated in their new digs, however Polly's dad is the proverbial nay sayer, only to cause more confusion, especially for his daughter. The question we all asked back in the day, would Tom (Norman Alden) have treated a son the same way? Interesting.

One thing for sure, Alden's character was not too popular among us kids back in the day.

Without giving too much away, there is a happy ending. Very good writing on the part of George Tibbles and excellent direction by Fred De Cordova, as usual, who got some excellent performances from Ronnie Troup.

As always, Fred MacMurray and Beverly Garland made a super mom and dad.

Best of SEASON 11 EPISODE 9 remastered color.
