Sweet movie, occasionally bogged down by the raunchy humor
michaelb843 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched this movie and really liked it. Cloudburst is the story of two lesbians who have been together for 31 years. After Dotty falls out of bed when her partner teases her with a vibrator, her granddaughter decides that she needs to be placed in a nursing home. Stella refuses to allow her to do this so Molly, the granddaughter, tricks Dotty into signing over power of attorney to her and then places her in the home.

Stella busts her out and the two flee to Canada in order to get married, along the way picking up Pretince, a young dancer from New York who is traveling to see his sick mother.

The movie is often touching, and the best scenes were generally the parts where Dotty and Stella were just being a typical old couple, either bickering or showing charming displays of affection (often both at the same time). The humorous scenes often feel unnecessary and occasionally bring the movie down from it's full potential. With that said I did laugh at many of them, especially a hilarious scene where Stella and Pretince cross the Canadian border and are stopped by security. Others weren't as good, for example a scene where Dotty accidentally gets in bed with a naked guy.

All in all it is a great movie and addresses the lives of lesbian seniors who are often ignored by the generally youth-centered LGBT entertainment industry.

Worth Watching but Ending Could be Better
brighthillsbear29 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the light-hearted banter of this movie. It was sometimes a little slapstick and over the top but it made me laugh. It was refreshing to see lesbian characters who weren't in their twenties.

The only criticism I have of this movie is in the ending - Dot's death seemed totally unnecessary. I half expected her to wink and say 'Just kidding'. Another reviewer thought this might be part of a tendency to make lesbian stories tragic. Personally, I interpreted it as more of a mistaken belief that stories about the elderly have to end in death. Death happens but I dislike the constant portrayal that the elderly aren't doing anything with their lives except waiting for it to end. The enjoyment the two of them got out of life gave most of the movie it's charm.

I will admit, however, that it did give Olympia Dukakis' character an opportunity for a brilliant last line! Almost enough for me to forgive the way they ended it.

One of the most sweet movie on LGBTQ I have ever seen
Yellow_under_the_feet3 August 2014
Cloudburst is a 2011 Canadian-American adventure comedy-drama film by American-Canadian writer and director Thom Fitzgerald. This hilarious foul-mouthed, lesbian road movie co-stars Oscar (R)- winning actresses Brenda Fricker and Olympia Dukakis as Dot and Stella, a crackerjack lesbian couple on the run from a nursing home. You'll laugh so hard you'll cry. Stella and Dot have been together for 31 years and have faithfully accompanied one another through life's ups and downs. Now in their seventies, Stella is hard of hearing and Dot is legally blind. Dotty's prudish granddaughter, Molly (played by Genie Award-winner Kristin Booth), decides the best place for Dot is a nursing home that will provide all the necessities. This forces Stella and Dot to make a bold decision: they will leave their hometown and make their way to Canada, where same-sex marriage is legal. It's a last-gap bid to stay together. En route to Canada, they pick up a young hitchhiker, Prentice, played by newcomer Ryan Doucette. A small-town boy turned modern dancer, he is returning to Nova Scotia to visit his dying mother. Despite his bravado, Prentice is a confused and wounded soul who has much to learn from Stella and Dot as they wage their own unexpected battle - after three decades, can they keep their family together? One of the most sweetest love story which will bring tears n smile in the same time.

Excellent Movie
hipps00113 August 2012
Loved this movie. Contrary to the other reviewer who found Olympia Dukakis' character offensive I thought she was wonderful. She was playing a character. She wasn't representing all lesbians. Yes it was over the top but I think the humanity of her character came through in spite of the swearing and 'bull dyke' representation. I think that the other character's grand daughter not realizing she was a lesbian was a bigger stretch than Olympia's character. I also thought that the relationship between the two main characters was very realistic whether you wanted to accept their characterizations or not. I actually went to this movie not expecting much and really just wanted to see Olympia Dukakis. I came out of the movie laughing, crying and uplifted by a story of love that is universal and eternal. I am sorry if you didn't want to accept a lesbian who wears vests, cowboy hats, drinks tequila and swears like a sailor but they do exist and so what? Who cares? Love is love. If you want to laugh and cry and believe that everyone should have the right to marry the person they love no matter what then go see this movie. If you are easily offended by a bull dyke characterization of an elderly lesbian then you may want to skip it but you will be missing a real treat.

CLOUDBURST is a massive crowd-pleaser in terms of its boutique license
lasttimeisaw22 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Outburst with expletives, bottoms and balls (literally, a blind lady has her head jammed between a naked man's thighs), Thom Fitzgerald's CLOUDBURST is not for the prude, adapted from his own awards-winning eponymous play, it is an atypical queer film illustrating a life-affirming story about an elderly lesbian couple, Stella and Dotty, played respectively by two Oscar winning actress Dukakis (MOONSTRUCK, 1987) and Fricker (MY LEFT FOOT, 1989).

Stella and Dotty have been living together for 31 years, during which period Dotty has become blind. When Dotty's self-seeking granddaughter Molly (Booth) puts her in a nursing home, so as to secure the proprietorship of their property, a feisty Stella spirits Dotty away, they embark a road trip from Maine to Nova Scotia to get married. En route they pick up a young hitchhiker Prentice (Doucette), a guileless dancer-cum-stripper, who is on his way to visit his dying mother Cat (O'Brien), eventually, he becomes their best man and officiate their matrimony.

From MOONSTRUCK to CLOUDBURST, hats off to Ms. Dukakis, edging 80-years-old during the filming, she takes up the gauntlet to play the larger-than-life butch dyke stereotype. Stella takes no prisoners in safeguarding her beloved Dotty, she is outspoken, indomitable and uncompromising, with a mouth can put even the most coarse sailor in the shade. She can also be mischievous and tender-heart-ed, the moments when she and Dotty share their rapport and emancipate their affections can be effectively and concurrently heart-warming and tear-jerking.

Ms. Fricker, hides her Irish accent and counterbalances Stella's panache with her more inwardly- radiated warmness, the blind is often the wiser, but she is not a clichéd femme either, when it comes to the crunch, even Stella balks at their future, she remains firm and we realize who is the real decision-maker. Mr. Doucette, reprises his role in the play, is sidelined mostly as a comic relief in spite of his own misery and an eye-candy to offset the senescence-skewing melancholy which has been loomed around since the very onset.

Mr. Fitzgerald doesn't try to sugarcoat a feel-good ending, since certain things cannot be sidestepped at that stage of life (as the title implies), instead, he chooses to instill laughter and hope in those darkest hours, to celebrate their fulfilled love, something only those lucky ones can have. Varnished with the golden-filtered palette and the awe-inspiring vista along their journey, no wonder CLOUDBURST is a massive crowd-pleaser in terms of its boutique license.

Great Indy flick!
pingram-162-87370316 September 2011
This was an excellent movie. The 3 stars Olympia Dukakis, Brenda Fricker and Ryan Doucette give outstanding performances and make the characters believable and interesting. Thom Fitzgerald takes a simple story and turns it into a wonderful journey with spectacular backdrops spectacular performances from his cast. In the course of 2 hours he is able to develop each of the main characters so that we really care about each of them. The minor Characters are a little cliché at times but it never takes away from the story or what makes this a great movie. The movie has course language but if you are not upset by this you will find yourself laughing and crying all within the length of the movie. Do yourself a favour and go see this!

Mostly entertaining
proud_luddite18 February 2020
In Maine, an elderly, closeted lesbian couple must deal with a granddaughter who wants to send her grandmother to a nursing home. The couple believes they must escape to Nova Scotia where they can marry under Canadian laws.

The first half of the film is great comedy. As the stronger half of the couple, Olympia Dukakis is perfectly foul-mouthed as a ferocious bulldozer. She makes one want to smack her except she makes us laugh so much. Her monologue of defending her frequent use of the c-word is to die for.

While Brenda Fricker is also fine as Dukakis's partner, the film is weaker in the second half. A broad farcical scene in a farm home seems out of place as do many other scenes before the film's end. While the film ends on a moving note, it's too bad it didn't maintain its initial strength.

Destined to be one of the great movie love stories
steven-leibson9 June 2013
The brief synopsis of this story is that it's about two old lesbians living in Maine who pick up a hitchhiker. That's not a very good synopsis. This movie is about two people who have loved each other and lived together for 31 years. Age and a selfish granddaughter threaten to end the relationship so these two octogenarian ladies decide to run away in an old, red pickup truck through the back roads of Maine to Canada where they can be married. Along the way they pick up a young, male hitchhiker who happens to be a modern/exotic dancer from New York. This trio then takes an unlikely road trip with a series of misadventures and adventures through the beautifully photographed landscape of eastern Canada.

Olympia Dukakis plays a role you might never expect to see: a crusty old lesbian with the mouth of the saltiest sailor. She is magnificent. Brenda Fricker plays the blind, wise old woman. You root for her every step of the way. A very funny Ryan Doucette plays the hitchhiker. You'd never know this was his first movie.

This movie places everything you expect from a romantic comedy/drama and pours it into new vessels not previously used to hold this vintage. The movie has already played in theaters in every country but the US. In the US, the Lifetime cable channel purchased it, so the language is not likely to survive un-bleeped. Not to worry, it appears on DVD in July, 2013 so you can see it as the author intended: sweet, salty, and well done. (We just saw this movie in San Jose, CA as part of the Camera Cinema Club.)

Dated after two years
survsylvania8 February 2015
Olympia Dukakis is a beautiful old lady, miscast in this part. She delivers lines one would expect to hear from Alex of Orange is the New Black, and it just doesn't work for her -- or for this old lady writing this review. Now that same-sex marriage is the law of virtually all of the land in North America, even down here in Old Virginny, the movie does feel a bit dated.

The fact that there is no resolution for Prentice in his relationship to his parents is disappointing. The writer seems to take the easy way out rather than seeing the situation to its probably more interesting ending than this treatment gives it. The movie at times descends to farce, though it has some touching moments. Prentice and Dot give excellent performances despite the weak, undeveloped script and immature directing.

The cinematography in Maine and Nova Scotia are incredibly beautiful. I would not recommend this movie despite the three leads' terrific acting.

Fricker and Dukakis do their best.
wisewebwoman7 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
But they can't save this movie from a poorly thought through script and its many plot holes.

The border crossing was a joke with a cavity search for drugs and then followed in quick succession by a release into Canada. And then a back track back to the US to pick up Dukakis and go through the border again in the same truck? Hello? And the granddaughter not realizing her granny and her partner of 31 years are not lesbians? Too much slapstick, and the ending had to end in a punishment for the lesbian theme. Always that same old cliché at the end of such movies.

Most disappointing as the set up of the male stripper and the old couple settling down together had far more appeal.

Too bad, it started really, really well and finished with such a whimper.

Marvelous flick
sergepesic20 March 2022
This marvelous little, independent flick somehow escaped me for years. At first sight it's just a typical road movie. Two old ladies, a lesbian couple for 31 years, escape from the indignities of a nursing home and drive to Canada to get married. There is a hitchhiker, a modern dancer/stripper, and people and situations one encounters on a road trip. What makes this movie a jewel are two fantastic actresses, two Oscar winners, Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker. Their chemistry, their ease with which they just put on a skin and soul of their characters makes this flick a treasure. Farewell Ms. Dukakis, you'll be missed.

Over The Top Highjinks ruin this movie
Poolie21 June 2013
This movie tries to be too many things and it ruins it. For most of the movie, the writer-director goes for blatant over-the-top "really bad TV sitcom" humour. Most of the attempted humour is extremely lame, over the top and not realistic whatsoever. It tries to so hard to be vulgar and shocking (especially the Dukakis character)that even someone who usually appreciates salty and vulgar humour was left dumbfounded by 95% of the attempted jokes in this movie.

The more serious/sentimental parts were much better and well done but after portraying the 3 main characters as idiotic buffoons for 70 minutes, we found ourselves unable to care for them as real human being for the sweeter parts, because of it.

The 3 main actors also do much better in the few serious parts of the movie than in the over-the-top slapstick that is so poorly written that you can't really tell if their acting was terrible. I suspect it was the material and direction more than the acting, as Dukakis and Fricker are such solid pros.

I know these gals... Loved it... A treat for the soul
blog-952-57100719 March 2014
Really! Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker portray lesbians that have been in my life, foul mouth and all. To those who says this movie is not 100% realistic, well, thank heavens for that! These characters are real enough and the humor is great. The real life consequences of getting old, living as unmarried, unrecognized partners is very real and can be very painful. And those issues are brought forth with irony, clarity, raunchiness and loving tenderness. Just like life.

The young hitchhiker character was endearing, bringing another additional layer of the complexity of human relationships into the mix. This movie is lighthearted at times, laughing out loud funny here and there, and dramatizes the struggles of being homosexual, elderly, and being authentically out of the norm.

This Stella doesn't need to get her groove back. She never lost it!
mark.waltz2 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The irrepressible Olympia Dukakis has really broken ground in her relatively short time as an Oscar winning celebrity. Playing a transsexual apartment owner who left new tenants home made joints, the mother of a transsexual lesbian and the seller of tickets at the "Let's take a wack at Ouiser" booth was already a respected stage actress when she struck gold as Cher's mother. Now, she's Stella, a no-nonsense self confessed dyke who is determined to hold onto the love of her life, and she will do all she can to marry her.

A tickling game results in her lover Brenda Fricker being sent to a convalescent home. Practically beating up Fricker's uptight granddaughter and the local sheriff, Dukakis sneaks Fricker out and heads up to Canada, and like Thelma and Louise, they pick up a hunky hitchhiker, but there's no hanky or panky going on. "You're barking up the wrong fire hydrant", Dukakis tells him as he shows off his goods.

"If that skirt was any shorter, you'd need another hairnet" is perhaps the mildest comment Dukakis says, shocking a very Christian Canadian who picks her up hitchhiking. Certainly, some people will take offense to what she says, but Dukakis refuses to betray who this broad is. Fricker is the more gentle of the two, but equally tough underneath her grandmotherly demeanor. Underneath her masculine exterior, Stella actually beats a heart of gold even though she can be at times very brusk.

Delightfully non-politically correct, it is also extremely romantic in the sense of what Dukakis strives to achieve. Call this a gay "On Golden Pond" as seen through the eyes of Miss Apley, the old lesbian next door to Ethel and Norman Thayer. It is a triumph of determination that gets these two women through their ordeal, with Ryan Doucette in fine support as the surrogate son they find along the way. He's on his way home to see Hus dying mother and seems to be carrying his own secrets. Together, these three opposites share some dynamic adventures, and it ultimately is both bittersweet and funny, but never short of being amusingly human.

Beautiful, wonderful, hilarious
honeypot-stfu6 July 2013
If I had to choose a film among all those I have seen the last 5 years, I couldn't recommend more Cloudburst!

This is an hilarious love story at each and every minute.

Cloudburst is also a very touching comedy, beautiful.

Brenda's Fricker (Dot) and Olympia's Dukakis (Stella) acting is purely magic! They carry us in a road trip with Ryan Doucette (Prentice). At the end, the film received a full standing ovation! It deserves fully all nominations and awards it has received!

By now, I'm sure that whatever plan you have tonight, you will cancel it to watch Cloudburst. Don't hesitate anymore!

OK - poor screenplay, inconsistent
aksns6116 March 2014
While the overall context was clever and cute, I felt myself constantly jarred by inconsistent scenes and completely out of touch portrayals of locations and characters. The "butch" of the duo was overdone and also got in the way of the movie as a whole.

The introduction of the young man was clever BUT the development of the character was poor at best. He delivered his lines well, and he was authentic, but the script went from bad to worse. There were many holes in both the plot and the locations.

Border crossings were ridiculous and anyone who is from N New England would know, crossing from Maine to Canada, heading East to Nova Scotia takes you into FRENCH speaking New Brunswick Canada!!! All signs will be in French, all stores, shops are in French. Instead this was shot on the cheap and all signs, streets, locations were English Speaking.

The young man's family was never introduced or developed in a way that the audience would know anything about how this guy somehow grew up in a home where he had no room , nor could live in, nor had a "father" which was plausible. Furthermore lived on a farm where there was no barn, no crops and no animals.

Every single town looked the same....

The absolutely ridiculous was the view of the SUNSET looking over the Atlantic Ocean- eh? If your on the EAST Coast, its a sunrise.... the west coast its a sunset. The movie was filled with these flaws that took away from the overall theme of two women that had lived together for 31 years.

Save your money and time, skip this one...

Wonderful movie
cdonahue287729 January 2014
I decided to watch Cloudburst the other night. I loved this movie, it was at times a laugh out loud, and other times a tear jerker. The performances by all the cast was phenomenal. If you are looking for a movie that will capture your heart, this is it.

This is more than just a love story. It tells the story of two women who have shared many years of their lives. Who in the face of illness face the real possibility of being separated. There's many couples who face this everyday. Hits on some serious topics, yet the dialogue is some times light. Great.

Its on netflix. If you have a chance check it out. It is winner of 13 awards. And rightfully so.

Awesome show!
cmcaleer113 January 2013
It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a movie as much as I did when I watched Cloudburst last summer. My daughter and I watched it together and we laughed and cried all the way through it. I had not heard anything about the show before seeing it and it was a thrill to be so surprised at how great the show was. While all of the cast played their parts wonderfully, my favourite character was Ryan Doucette and I look forward to seeing him in many more future movies. I hope it comes out on video so I can buy a copy to add to my home collection. I can't wait to watch it again. Thank you for such great entertainment and keep up the great work Ryan.

Great movie except for the ending
pmarsh-946-93891012 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Olympia Dukakis is amazing as Stella. Brenda Fricker is incredible as Dot. Ryan Doucette is wonderful as Prentice.

There are spoilers in there. I checked the spoiler box. This is your last chance to skip my review.

If you are offended by foul language don't watch the movie.

Olympia plays an old lesbian with a mouth that would make the saltiest sailor blush. Fabulously funny! Sort of like a lesbian version of Ouiser Boudreaux.

I don't know why some writers think that movies with homosexual characters in them have to have a tragic component. I loved the movie up until just before end ... why couldn't they have just gone back to Maine and lived happily ever after?

The movie hit home. I am gay and have been in a relationship for 22.5 years as of this review. My hubby and I live in a state where gay marriage is not recognized, Alabama. With the right wingers pushing laws to outlaw gay marriage (or recognition of it performed in other states) it is very scary. We have no rights. Even armed with a folder full of legal paperwork things are not certain. One of the main characters, Dot, is shipped off to an old folks home by her granddaughter. The granddaughter tricks her into signing over her power of attorney ... Dot is blind and so she can't read what she is signing. No, this is not just fiction. There are some terribly nasty people in the world.

One of my favorite scenes is where Stella is hitch hiking the last part of the way to Canada. A guy picks her up and she goes off into this bit about the C-word ... it reminded me of George Carlin's bit about the F- word. I was howling with laughter watching Olympia do this scene.

Blast - was going to give the movie a 9 because of the writer's desire to put another tragic spin on a story with homosexual characters but the rest of the movie is definitely a 10. Oh, I did find the scene where Dot got into bed with the naked man very funny ... I loved when she started whacking him with her walking stick - very much like something that Diana Trent (Waiting for God) would have done ... but she would have whacked to permanently damage.

Really, this is a great movie. Very engaging. The acting is great. The characters are wonderful.

Beautiful movie, until the ending
ira1997013 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
*No spoilers until the end of the review* (no explicit spoilers in the end either, but you can easily guess what it's about)

Two elderly lesbians, Stella and Dotty, on a road trip to Canada to get married. On their way they pick up a hitchhiker, Prentice.

Cloudburst is a beautiful and funny movie with great pacing and good actors. I liked the characters and their stories, they were funny and interesting and each character brings their own personality and complexity into the movie. The one thing I disliked about this movie is the ending, on which I elaborate below.

All in all, definitely worth watching.

***spoilers (not explicit)***

The ending could have been better. I don't have a problem with sad or tragic endings, but it was absolutely unnecessary here. It didn't add emotional depth or anything good into the movie. It could have just as easily ended happily and it would have been just as great if not better.

I Would Have Liked to Rated It Higher Except...
kindtxgal6 March 2014
I would have liked to give this film a higher rating but contrary to other reviewers, I do not believe that one has to be immersed in excessive profanity and garbage language to "get into" a characterization.

Hundreds of early movies have successfully and vividly portrayed "bullish" characters without having to adopt garbage can lingo to create their character as more "believable". Frankly, I find excessive garbage can language distracting and used to "fill time" which could be better used to tell the story more thoroughly.

I did like the story, however, just got tired REAL FAST of Dukakis's bad dialog. Again, when an actor has to rely on garbage for language to create their character, something is badly lacking in their acting abilities.

I loved Brenda Fricker's character however, as well as the male stripper wanna be -- great characters and placed against Dukakis's over the top, offensive yuck, it was a welcome relief.

Tender, fantastic story of what some may consider an unconventional love. THAT at least survives throughout all the bad language miraculously.

Brillant film with Dukakis, Fricker and Doucette
Irishchatter1 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely loved hearing what came out of Dukakis' mouth. Seriously my jaws were hurt with laughter with the amount of curse words she was using on people. Man she really did play a butch lesbian really well and like it wouldn't be hard to love her character. Frickers character was brillant too, omg I absolutely laughed at the scene where she accidentally hit the hitchhikers fathers balls with her head, when she thought that she was sleeping with her partner. Seriously Brenda Fricker can play a blind person really well, especially with a lot of humour! I even thought Doucette's character was super good as the hitchhiker and of course, he was very handsome which is a bonus ;P Really though, he was brillant too!

All actors were brilliant including Kristin Booth as the granddaughter. I have to admit though in the end, it was sad and unexpected when Frickers character died and the fact that both women didn't get a chance to have a proper wedding ceremony but it taught us that love never died with those two women!

I give this 9/10!

What were they thinking?
kkmetz19 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to this because I like Olympia Dukakis as an actor. However even though she acted well her character was just a miserable human being. She was mean to everybody including the woman she loved. Her choices seem to be questionable at best. The whole thing seemed unreasonable and the choices they made to do what when didn't make sense. Why they didn't go ahead and get married I don't know. Why she called the niece when they were going to get married I don't know. And the ending of her lover dying is a real downer. Even the supposed comedy scenes didn't really come off well.

A rare specimen
lusomochi5 November 2019
(TLDR: I definitely recommend watching this.)

The title sums up my initial thought about the movie - a lesbian COMEDY? A lighthearted lesbian movie where nobody goes to conversion therapy camp and nobody cheats on their husband? Nobody goes through a traumatic coming out to their family and friends which then Have a Hard Time? Wild, unbelievable.

Hold your horses if you got too excited by this crazy occurence though - we couldn't do without at least one typical lgbt-movie thing - It's an lgbt themed movie so of course someone dies (not tagging as spoiler because honestly - you most likely already knew that, this is how common this is).

Also there's a weird ammount of naked men in this for a movie about lesbians.

I liked the raunchy over the top, brainless humor - it's just really not something you get enough of for this type of movies. Something you Also don't get a lot of is portrayals of gay people which are older than like, 20, and actually had a decent life in a stable relationship. We need more movies like this, more normal movies which are not all striving to be High Art and talking about how being gay is a tragedy that will Ruin Your Life Forever. Not because those grim movies are not relatable - they ARE relatable for most lgbt people and that's the problem.

This is a cute movie that's just something random you can watch with a popcorn and not have an existential crisis over. So cheers to that and I'm hoping for more movies like this. Taking away the two stars for some cringy moments, and the "wait it's gay so someone has to die".
