Piece of Real Life
VintageSoul568 April 2012
I watched this movie last night. I like to watch character studies. This movie was realistic about real life. I found it funny and engaging. The acting was very good. It was refreshing that a 50 year old man was attracted to a woman in his own age group! I did feel that the ending felt a little unfinished though and could have tied things up a little more. However, as I said earlier, the movie is about real life. Sometimes, things aren't tied up neatly like in the movies. There's that thing that you would have liked to have said or that thing that you would have liked to have done, but in all reality, a lot of times it isn't possible. I guess that's why I thought that this movie felt just a bit flat because I think that we are conditioned to have things neatly tied up in our hour and a half to two hours. Because we all want that happy ending.

About Fifty
emmerson714 January 2013
I've seen this cute indie movie a little while ago. Being a fan of independent productions I just had to watch it. While not having the best story & script it was still entertaining enough. The movie also had a nice use of locations. Their low budget was seemingly very well spent. There are no famous actors in this flick except for a few well-known TV players like Wendie Malick, Miriam Flynn or Kathleen No one. There should be more projects like this one in particular. Age is still a huge issue, not just in Hollywood but worldwide. Aging should be displayed in more movies/TV shows and we shouldn't be seeing just a bunch of 20 or 30something actors on silver/small screen. I really hope it can be done in the coming years.

An un-funny remake of "Swingers" dealing with 50 year olds and the search for love and more. I didn't enjoy this. I say C-

"50 is the new thirty, isn't it funny how you never hear 30 year olds saying that?" Adam is going through a divorce. His best friend Jon is single and trying to help him out decides to go on a long weekend to Palm Springs. In between golf rounds the two 50 year olds meet a young 25 year old woman who introduces them to her roommate...her 50 year old mother. The two men then begin to realize what's important and what they need in their lives. Lately I have been watching movies before I see the previews for them. It helps me to not have any preconceived notions going in and I watch it with a more open mind. I watched the preview for this one, and I realize why I don't usually do it anymore. The preview is very funny and I was looking forward to it. I was very let down. The best way to describe this is if the guys from "Swingers" grew up but didn't really change (except they lost their humor) and turned into pathetic versions of themselves. It could be because I'm only 33 and this is meant for an older crowd but I didn't really like this movie at all. Overall, not for me, but 50 year olds and up may. I just didn't get it. I give it a C-

A dissenting opinion
topsail33-13 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I did not enjoy this movie very much. I am a 48 year old, newly separated man, and was hoping to find something in it, that I could relate to. For the most part I did not. I found these two guys to be too whiny and moody. I thought Adam was co-dependent. I saw through Jon's character right away - single guy who's quickly realizing he has nothing and has done nothing with his life (in terms of relationship). Other posters mentioned this as a comedy that made them laugh. I saw it strictly as a drama, and found the whole California/Porsche lifestyle pretentious. I did like the last 10 minutes of the film, and thought it almost made a recovery, but then it ended. Adam was just too wishy washy for my taste; I would have liked to have seen him be a little more assertive in his dealings with himself and his soon to be ex-wife.

About Fifty, a surprisingly good movie
weallareone23 October 2012
It started slow, one of the central characters is miserable, the other a man incapable of forming an emotional bond with a woman, I started thinking about whether I wanted to watch the whole movie or not, as I didn't particularly enjoy a 50 something chatting up and flirting with a barely 20 something.

At the end of the movie I can definitely say that it did hold my interest, the way the characters were portrayed was with depth, poignancy and humour. The movie took me on a journey with the characters, and didn't (as I read in another review) "wrap it up with a ribbon & bow", which meant it had a real life flavour.

An insight into human development and growth, and the mistakes we all make along the way.

True to life on being fifty
Jasonlrdg420 July 2013
"About Fifty" is a very real to life movie that deals with the fears of being fifty and over.

To be honest, when I saw the film (today on my laptop), I truly had different expectations on how certain things would turn out in the movie. However, I thought that the storyline turned out good regardless.

Martin Grey and Drew Pillsbury, who played Adam and Jon, delivered good performances. I really found their interactions with each other had a brutal honesty and played well into the issues that men their age face (health issues, dating, and divorce). I also enjoyed the golf aspects of the movie and I can see how the sport ties into these guys getting older.

Laugh Out Loud Adult Comedy
mikepilolla19 January 2012
What an experience to sit in a theater and listen to everyone laugh out loud, through out the film. The ensemble cast is wonderful and pitch perfect together. The performances are brilliant, the pace is perfect, the dialog is crisp and witty and every adult can relate to this story. There are enough twists and turns in the story to keep this from being predictable, but even if you do see something coming, the performances make it a joy to watch it unfold on the screen. It will make you look at your best friendships in a whole new light and relationships from a long term perspective. Thank you Marty and Drew for one of the best adult comedies I've seen in years. Can't wait for the sequel!

VERY FUNNY "easy to relate to" film, thought-provoking
funyakkers21 January 2012
I saw this film at a "screening." It was very funny. It starts off funny and is funny throughout. A friend and I watched it together. I am 46 years old. I could relate to characters and their lives and their friendship totally. This film made was thought provoking and poignant. I highly recommend it to everyone. There is quite a bit of "language," but nothing vulgar or offensive or over the top. Do not let that stop you from seeing it or you will miss out on a great film. Be prepared to laugh at their life and...hopefully your own. Because everyone should be able to do that, right? The writing is not only well-done, but humorous. The acting is good. The characters are great.

Good Movie - Good Story
ctbl23 February 2012
As Jon and Adam go on their journey together, they take you with them, their ups and downs, and inevitable realization of what life is all about. All the actors were genuine, and the story credible - It was sentimental, dramatic and funny - all the elements of a good movie - highly recommend this film. The location of the film, set in the desert (or at the golf course) put you into the lives of Adam and Jon, along with the memorable people they encounter. You begin on their road trip with them, not knowing what to expect, as neither do they. Where it ends up is not far off from the "real world". Adam seeming to struggle with life, going through a possible divorce, the emotions of why and what else is there. Jon resisting getting older and feeling the trials and tribulations. The women in the movie hold their own and add a good balance to the two male leads.

Fantastic Movie
syorbalinda19 January 2012
I think this is the best movie I have ever seen. I had no trouble keeping focused on every detail as it was interesting and funny. it moves quickly through the story with very unique scenes to get the point across. It is a great comedy and made me laugh out loud. It contains no dead spots. Each actor carries his or her part with great skill. It tells the stories of modern life in a very special way without being maudlin. I wonder why Drew P. is not a major movie-star as he possesses real movie-star looks with excellent acting skills. In this day of flashy action films, this character study of these two men is refreshing. I was able to "get-into" the film and felt a part of their lives. It was most entertaining and gave me such a good feeling that this feeling of goodness will stay with me a very long time.

one cool movie
barbara-844-70513219 January 2012
Wow! What a wonderful, endearing movie. The characters are all so genuine and you can actually feel their angst as they travel a path that many have endured during middle age transitions. The story line keeps you involved all along the way. (Those great golf shots will be loved by golf enthusiasts as well.) But probably the purity of the story and the everydayness connection to real people is what will make people rent this movie long after it's left the theaters. Casting was brilliant, and the familiar faces add an element of "coolness" to the stellar ensemble. Inerestingly, I went with a 28-year-old man who might not be able to identify with the main characters but, nonetheless, enjoyed the many scenarios that set up great comic outcomes. This is just one of those captivating movies that reminds you why you love to go to the movies.

Well observed about aging
davidesteiner19 October 2013
The movie is about aging. Older parents, older bodies, older minds, older marriages, older behaviors, older dreams and older realities. Mostly actors you don't know, but older people who watch Hot in Cleveland will recognize Wendie Malick, who, without much makeup, shows that older actresses know more about life, and acting, than younger actresses. I'm much older than fifty, but I still remember what's going on here, and survived it, too. Three acts, easily recognizable, spare exposition, but just enough, and some nice golf scenes, that show the writer knows about both the pluses and minuses of playing the game. It's not a great movie, but it's a film that archivists will cite as displaying the zeitgeist. Certainly worth a look if you're at or approaching mid-life; it's both entertaining and food for thought.

The guys didn't appeal to me unless they were with the girls
vchimpanzee23 August 2018
I get the impression this was a quality production, though the signs of being low-budget are there. Many people are thanked at the end and the stars wrote and produced. However, I just found most of the scenes with the two men alone unpleasant. Some scenes with physical comedy were better. When one of the men was with someone else, usually a woman, or they are both with women, I was a lot happier. Actually, it was just the two women. I disliked the rest of the women, but that doesn't meant they weren't good.

Adam is not yet willing to leave Erin. He should, because she is unpleasant in all her scenes. But you'll just have to wait and see what happens.

The women playing Alix and Kate were really good. The actress playing Kate has had many roles which I enjoyed her in. And she was good here too. Alix doesn't really try to be sexy except in one scene (and she's quite good at that) but it's not exactly what you might think. There is one more thing you need to know about Kate, but it's funnier if you find out the way I did (and don't look at her name in the credits first or you'll know).

I liked some of the music. I particularly liked what I believe to be ukulele. At first I thought it was a guitar. The song is played at the beginning and in at least one other scene. I think I remember another scene with acoustic guitar and standup bass. Ironically, it was in a scene with Alex and her coed roommate that I heard another song I liked. There was one song that started out smooth jazz, though it ended up having more of a rock sound I didn't like. And despite the ages of these men (they were the same age I was when the movie was made), there was plenty of rock music I didn't care for.

I saw this movie after it was cleaned up for TV. I wouldn't recommend it for kids even then.

You need to stay for the end of the credits for the message from the American Humane Association.

You might like it if you are a guy getting older.
