Kevin Costner starred as John Dutton on Paramount Network’s original neo-Western drama series Yellowstone, created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. The series recounts the story of family drama that follows along the shared borders of the Yellowstone Ranch, the Broken Rock Indian reservation, Yellowstone National Park, and land developers.
The show opened with a mixed response from critics, but it was reported that the show had become one of the most-watched television series in 2018, just behind AMC’s The Walking Dead. The series is in its fifth season, which has been split into two installments, with the second installment scheduled to premiere in November 2024. Kevin Costner’s performance as John Dutton has been highly lauded in the series, and the actor talked about voicing a very unexpected character.

This month Disney will be hosting Disney+ Day, which means the streamer’s list of new releases for September 2022 is more jam-packed than usual.
Keeping with tradition, however, the biggest release this month is of the Marvel of Star Wars variety, with Star Wars taking its turn after Marvel did with She-Hulk in August. Prequel series Andor is set to premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 21 with three episodes. Starring Diego Luga as the titular rogue, Andor will take place in the time before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Disney has big plans for this property, with an uncommonly large 12-episode order set to run throughout the fall.
Some other big Disney franchises stake their claims with month with Pixar’s Cars on the Road and The Simpsons short “Welcome to the Club” both arriving on Sept. 8. Also premiering that day is the Robert Zemeckis film Pinocchio. Later on, Disney+ will...

Sony’s Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt, saw 4.6M in Thursday previews which began at 3pm at 3,596 locations. The pic is estimated to bring in around 30M this weekend as summer’s last big tentpole.
Interesting to note, though not necessarily a comp since it was branded IP, is that Bullet Train from director David Leitch had previews that were not that far from what his Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw posted back in early August 2019, that being 5.8M.
Next to late summer Thursday previews, Bullet Train is ahead of The Meg‘s Thursday and also last year’s The Suicide Squad at 4.1M (even though that latter title was day and date on HBO Max and saw a start of 26.2M).
Critics are sour on Bullet Train at 53 on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences love it more at 83 on Rt.

Below, find the first teaser trailer from Focus Features, which is releasing the film in the U.S. in March.
Plot details remain under wraps, but the “Downton Abbey” sequel is set to take place after the events of the first film, which traced the preparation by the Crawley household for a visit by King George V and Queen Mary, an event that proved to be full of drama and intrigue at the estate.

Nothing is more frustrating and terrifying to a writer than writer's block. All of them, whether screenwriters or critics, are familiar with the agonizing feeling of sitting in front of the computer and staring at the black line that’s blinking into our faces, threatening and outright mocking the one looking at the blank page. That's the initial feeling that accompanies the audience when American Horror Story: Red Tide commences. The first chapter of the otherwise unusual season, titled Double Feature, concluded this week, and it's one of the anthology's most inventive, bloody, and terror-inducing seasons yet.

If crises continue to mount and late-summer box office fails to catch a second wind, Hollywood might have to revisit one of its few remaining sure things: a good dog movie.
Sure, Netflix and Amazon always have vintage canine classics on the shelf to stream, from Benji to Lassie, but a new weepie is also needed in the plexes — one to ease public tensions.
Further, those of us who’ve adopted a best friend to cope with the pandemic now are going back to work or to school. Or simply facing the fact that a best friend is more than we can handle, and so are the vet bills.
Given all this, exhibitors might wonder whether the cast of The Suicide Squad shouldn’t have featured canine stars like Hachi, Marley or even Scooby-Doo rather than live actors cast as Bloodsport, Ratcatcher or Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark.

Video Version of this Article Photo/Video: Animal Movies like 'Marley & Me'/20th Century Fox/Hollywood Insider YouTube Channel Introduction A News in Health article discusses how interacting with animals has been shown to decrease stress levels and lower blood pressure. Animals can also reduce loneliness and increase feelings of social support, as well as boost your mood. There are so many benefits of having an animal in your life, and films have been able to tap into this benefit over the years. For many movies, an essential role for heart and depth or comedic relief can come from animals or pets. The term “man’s best friend” was coined for a reason. It is no surprise that many films over the years incorporate these beings into their stories. Animals in film are not limited to dogs, though. Lionsgate has signed Marc Forster to direct the drama “White Bird: A Wonder Story,” a year after buying the feature films rights to the R.J. Palacio graphic novel.
The studio adapted Palacio’s popular book “Wonder” into a 2017 feature film starring Jacob Tremblay, Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts. “Wonder” was an impressive performer at the box office with $330 million worldwide.
“White Bird” centers on a young Jewish girl hidden away by a boy and his family in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Recounted by Grandmere to her grandson, Julian (a character first introduced to audiences in “Wonder”), the story demonstrates the power of kindness to change hearts, build bridges and even save lives.
Forster’s directing credits include “Neverland,” which was nominated for a best picture Academy Award; “Christopher Robin”; “World War Z”; “Quantum of Solace”; “The Kite Runner”; and “Stranger Than Fiction.” He will direct “White Bird” from a screenplay by Mark Bomback.

Exclusive: Three years after an eventful awards season with Garth Davis’s Lion, composers Dustin O’Halloran and Volker Bertelmann look to contend once again, with their score to Francis Lee’s Ammonite.
On Wednesday, the pair said their latest original motion picture soundtrack, from Milan Records, will debut on Friday, November 13, sharing with Deadline their stirring lead single “Fossils.”
For O’Halloran and Bertelmann, the process of scoring Ammonite proved both smooth and organic. “We knew from Francis Lee’s previous work this would be a score full of emotion and restraint. Because the film is a period piece, it also meant finding a tone and instrumentation that would work in this world,” the composers said. “The overall length of music recorded is somewhat shorter than our other scores; therefore, we used many natural sounds, so when the pieces arrive, it feels meaningful.”

The gravity-abused life of iconic stuntman Evel Knievel (1938-2007) was set to be chronicled by USA Network, which last year ordered a limited series, titled Evel, with Milo Ventimiglia tapped to star as the iconic daredevil. However, the world has obviously experienced significant changes since those plans were first spun, and it seems that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused Evel to wipe out from the cable channel’s production slate.
USA Network has scrapped Evel, according to THR. The project, which was picked up to series in September 2019, saw its New Mexico production—which was finishing location prep and was on the verge of rolling cameras—shut down this past March as the pandemic escalated. That move saw Ventimiglia and the rest of the cast—Sarah Gadon, David Krumholtz and Michael Chernus—sent home. It seems like every other week brings a new streaming service with it, but the May 27 launch of HBO Max is, indeed, a potential watershed moment. While presented as a branch of the existing HBO brand, it’s more accurately a WarnerMedia behemoth effort that unites the conglomerates many properties (plus a few original efforts) in one convenient place — that is, if you can figure out how to get it, let alone whether or not you already have access to it.
On its debut day, Variety’s chief TV critics Caroline Framke and Daniel D’Addario took a look through the new service to discuss its library, interface, and overall potential.
Caroline Framke: The first thing I did this morning was figure out how, exactly, to access HBO Max at all. In the months, weeks, days leading to this moment, the seemingly simple question of “how do you get HBO Max?...

As we wade deeper into the uncertain waters of isolated living, the list of movies and TV shows you haven’t seen already may be starting to dwindle. But fear not, quarantine content consumers — HBO is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in May, and there are lots of fresh options to keep you entertained this month.
Popular movies like “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Jaws” and “School of Rock” are all arriving Friday, May 1. Plus, the director’s cut of “Little Shop of Horrors,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “The Art of Getting By,” to name a few.
TV shows arriving throughout the month include the premiere of limited series “I Know This Much Is True” starring Mark Ruffalo, out May 10, and the season finale of HBO’s dark comedy “Run” starring Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson, out May 24.

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

If you’re looking to expand your home video library and catch up on some movies during these trying times, Disney just gave your bank account a little breathing room. After this weekend’s box office totals were revealed, estimates put “The Call of the Wild” at a domestic total of $45 million. With a debut last week of $24.8 million, you would assume that the Harrison Ford-led family film is on track to become a profitable film. But then you look at the cost of the production and you realize that ‘Call’ is now going to sit alongside “Dark Phoenix,” “Stuber,” “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” “Ad Astra,” and “Underwater” as Disney films inherited from the Fox deal that have greatly underperformed.

Quarterly earnings and revenues at the Walt Disney Company got a lift thanks to the box office success of “The Lion King” and growth in the company’s theme parks business.
Excluding certain items, diluted earnings per share decreased 28% to $1.07 from $1.48 in the prior-year quarter, beating forecasts. Revenues at the media giant also topped estimates, climbing 34% to $19.1 billion, up from $14.3 billion in the year-ago period. Wall Street was looking for adjusted earnings of 96 cents per share on $19.03 billion in revenue.
The company is undergoing seismic changes. Earlier this year, Disney completed its $71.3 billion acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets. It’s a deal that gives the studio control of 20th Century Fox, Nat Geo, FX and other brands, along with the rights to such storied franchises as “Avatar,” “X-Men” and “The Simpsons.” Despite the added fire power, the integration has not been a smooth one. “Everyone had the right to love and a bone.” That’s just one of the many canine insights served up by “Marona’s Fantastic Tale,” a dazzling expressionistic view of the world through the eyes of a stray dog who wants nothing more than those two comforts. Actually, the unassuming narrator (Lizzie Brochere) — who looks like the black-and-white version of painter George Rodrigue’s “Blue Dog” — would also appreciate if her various owners could just settle on what to call her, preferably a name that no one else has. Given the title, that’s perhaps the only detail audiences can anticipate in Romanian animator Anca Damian’s unexpected offering, which provides pleasures for all ages, but especially for dog lovers.
For Damian, the Paris-set “Marona” (which exists in both French- and Romanian-language versions) marks a significant departure both in tone and style from her previous work, most notably “Crulic – The Path to Beyond,...

Amanda Seyfried is set to join Netflix’s “Mank,” David Fincher’s latest pic revolving around “Citizen Kane” screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, with Gary Oldman tapped to play the titular role.
Lily Collins, Charles Dance, Tuppence Middleton, Arliss Howard, Ferdinand Kingsley, Jamie McShane, Joseph Cross, Sam Troughton, Toby Leonard Moore, Tom Burke, and Tom Pelphrey will also appear in the film.
“Mank” is based on a script by Fincher’s late father, Jack, who penned it prior to his death in 2003.
Specific plot details are vague, but sources say the story will follow Mankiewicz’s tumultuous development of the script for “Citizen Kane” — which would go on to be considered one of the best films of all time — alongside director Orson Welles. Despite the “Citizen Kane’s” critical success, the script was the only part of the film to win an Oscar.

Milo Ventimiglia briefly took a break from making us cry over the Pearsons in This Is Us to make us weep while watching him cuddle golden retrievers in The Art of Racing in the Rain. (Basically never watch anything he's in unless you're fully stocked up on tissues.) Based on Garth Stein's 2008 novel of the same name, the film follows an aspiring race car driver named Denny Swift (Ventimiglia) and his adorable dog Enzo (voiced by Kevin Costner) as they navigate all of life's twists and turns. Enzo is played by a number of talented real-life pups, and we have an exclusive video that shows exactly how the film's production team got them to behave on set.

It doesn’t take a soothsayer to realize that 20th Century Fox is experiencing something of a cinematic slump.
Films like X-Men: Dark Phoenix, action-comedy Stuber, and The Art of Racing in the Rain, which opened last month to just $8.1 million, all fell flat at the global box office, leading to a stern (yet measured) call to action from Disney CEO Bob Iger during last month’s quarterly earnings call.
Iger’s comments made for tough reading for any Fox staffer, though the chief executive has now clarified his statement in an interview with The New York Times (h/t TheWrap), noting that it was not so much a “slap-down” as it was an admission that Fox’s recent slate of movies had underperformed.

“Hustlers” and “Good Boys” proved that even in the age of Marvel dominance and remake mania, movies that don’t exist within an established franchise can still be box office draws. Can “Ad Astra” continue that trend?
The space drama — starring Brad Pitt and directed by James Gray — arrives on the big screen this weekend alongside two other nationwide releases with fierce competition among older audiences: Lionsgate’s “Rambo: Last Blood” and Focus Features’ “Downton Abbey.” All three titles are eyeing modest debuts around $20 million and will contend with the reigning champ, Warner Bros.’ “It: Chapter Two,” for first place on domestic box office charts. Based on Stephen King’s terrifying novel, “It: Chapter Two” collected $39 million last weekend and should pull in another $20 million during its third outing in theaters. This is Us star Milo Ventimiglia will star in USA Network limited series Evel, showcasing the life of legendary daredevil Evel Knievel.
The gravity-abused life of iconic stuntman Evel Knievel (1938-2007) will be chronicled by USA Network, which has ordered a limited series, titled Evel.
Milo Ventimiglia, who currently stars on NBC television drama This is Us (which manifests under the same corporate umbrella as the cable channel), will play the eponymous daredevil on USA Network’s Evel, which he’ll also executive produce. The series will focus on a specific period in Knievel’s career, namely the preparatory build-up before his famously-failed jump across Snake River Canyon – a heavily hyped event that took place west of Idaho’s Shoshone Falls, on September 8, 1974, at 3:36 p.m. Mdt.
The limited series comes after a 2015 spate of contemplated-but-nixed Evel Knievel biographical projects from heavies like Martin Scorsese and Darren Aronofsky.

Even with an impressive number of billion-dollar blockbusters, the 2019 summer box office won’t be one for the record books.
Popcorn season, the four-month stretch between May and August, generated $4.32 billion in ticket sales in North America, marking a 2% decline from last year’s $4.41 billion, according to Comscore. The summer box office has certainly seen worse. However, those uninspired returns pushed year-to-date revenues down over 6%, meaning the movie business will need to rely on huge hits in fall and winter to offset that deficit.
Disney walked away the big winner this summer as three movies — “The Lion King,” “Aladdin” and “Toy Story 4” — grossed more than $1 billion worldwide over the summer. “The Lion King” was the highest-grossing film this summer with domestic ticket sales at $523.5 million to date. Through the first weekend in September, the company commands 40% of the domestic box office.
But even the biggest Hollywood studio didn’t emerge unscathed.

Studios got badly burned this summer.
From May to August, popcorn season in movie speak, the film flops piled up and the big hits were few and far between for nearly every company except Disney.
As a whole, summer did little to instill confidence in the state of moviegoing. To be sure, there were successes such as “The Lion King,” “John Wick 3,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” but the onslaught of costly duds such as “Dark Phoenix” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” ensured that nobody emerged unscathed. By the time Labor Day has passed, summer moviegoing season should end up almost 3% behind 2018, according to Comscore, pushing the year-to-date box office down more than 6%.

Disney has given Twentieth Century Fox their first review since acquiring the studio, and it didn’t go as well as either would have hoped. Since the merger, Fox has released four films, beginning with the faith-based film Breakthrough, which was the only one that turned a profit. X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Stuber, and The Art of Racing in the Rain were all sadly considered flops. Disney’s Chief Executive Bob Iger did not mince words during the company’s quarterly earnings call. Here’s what he had to say:
“The Fox studio performance … was well below where it had been and well below where we hoped it would be when we made the acquisition.”
Yikes! That had to have been rough to hear. But Disney execs have to take into account that some of the problem has to be chalked up to timing. Anything would have looked like small potatoes up against Avengers: Endgame,...

As if the final X-Men movie, the generally unloved Dark Phoenix, didn't have enough problems.
If you thought you'd heard the last of Dark Phoenix's rocky road to cinemas, think again. After being hit with an objectively terrible reception from both critics and audiences alike, Fox's final X-Men outing is still getting dragged through the mud.
It emerged at the start of August that X-Men: Dark Phoenix was one of the key reasons that Fox lost $170 million in the second quarter of 2019, and a new report reveals that Simon Kinberg's X-Men swan song was likely Doa before it was even released, with Disney dumping the film's marketing team, and putting in as little effort as possible to support the film.
Per Variety, "Disney largely ignored Dark Phoenix after it acquired 20th Century in March, according to sources. The marketing team familiar with the film was laid off,...

August’s box office traffic jam is turning into full-on pileup. After five new nationwide releases last weekend, most of which failed in spectacular fashion, five more newcomers are arriving on movie theater marquees. It could mean another rough outing for Hollywood studios.
Universal’s raunchy comedy “Good Boys,” Sony’s animated “Angry Birds” sequel and Entertainment Studio’s shark thriller “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” look to have the best start among fresh offerings, but there’s a chance those will be the only films to hit double-digit debuts.
“The Angry Birds Movie 2” is getting a jump on the weekend by launching on Tuesday for a projected $16 million to $18 million from 3,800 theaters during its first six days of release. Some box office watchers estimate the film could reach $20 million, but even those numbers would be a huge drop from its predecessor, 2016’s “Angry Birds.” The first film, based on...

This report card isn’t going on anyone’s fridge.
Twentieth Century Fox received its first-quarter grades from the Walt Disney Co. last week, and in a public rebuke, the studio’s new corporate parent made it plain that it viewed the first few months as an ominous sign of trouble ahead.
In a sharp reprimand that left staffers at Fox reeling and worried about their already fragile job security, Disney chief executive Bob Iger declared on the company’s Aug. 6 quarterly earnings call that “the Fox studio performance … was well below where it had been and well below where we hoped it would be when we made the acquisition.” Iger’s tone was measured, but his message was clear: Shape up.
“I’ve never seen a public hanging like that,” remarks one prominent Hollywood producer.
Iger was giving voice to simmering frustrations on the part of many Disney insiders.

Actress Amanda Seyfried claims she turned down an offer to play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, and explains why.
Guardians of the Galaxy’s Gamora may be in an unusual state in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the events of Avengers: Endgame, but it seems that the character, played by Zoe Saldana, could have been a lot different, since actress Amanda Seyfried has (strongly) implied that she was initially offered the role, only to turn it down.
Seyfried made the rather intriguing revelation in a video interview with MTV promoting her recently-released co-starring dog dramedy film, The Art of Racing in the Rain, revealing that she rejected an offer to field a role that, while never-named, was obviously Gamora. When posed with the question if she would take a superhero movie, Seyfried explains somewhat cryptically:
“I turned down [a superhero movie] once and they haven’t called back since,...

Still standing tall on top of the box-office weekend countdown was Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which held onto first place for the second week in a row. The latest offering of the “Fast & Furious” franchise took in $25.4 million this weekend, giving it a two-week tally of $108.5 million and an ever-so-slight first-place finish over newcomer Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which debuted with $20.8 million.
Just behind the top weekend finishers was The Lion King (2019), which dropped one spot to third place with a $20 million domestic tally, and a four-week total of $473.1 million. The second film debuting in the top ten this week, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, finished in fourth place with $17 million and positive reviews all around. Meanwhile, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was also felled a few spots by the newcomers as Quentin Tarantino’s latest dropped to fifth place (from...

It seems that you can’t conduct a proper actor interview in 2019 without at least asking the question, “Would you like to play a superhero in a film?” With Marvel Studios dominating the box office, every actor is asked this question, with most saying yes. However, in the case of Amanda Seyfried, her answer is a little more complicated.
While speaking to MTV, the actress, who appears in “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” was asked if she would be down for the superhero life in the future.

Comic book movie fans can add Amanda Seyfried to the long list of actors who reportedly turned down a chance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a.k.a. one of the hottest tickets in Hollywood. Seyfried’s recent video interview with MTV has gone viral for revealing the actress rejected a role in an unnamed superhero tentpole. What Seyfried says has many believing the role was Gamora in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie franchise.
“I turned down [a superhero movie] once and they haven’t called back since,” Seyfried responded when asked about her interest in playing a superhero. “And it was a big one. I don’t regret it because I didn’t want to be green for six months out of every year. They tell beautiful stories through superheroes, and my daughter’s now really obsessed with superheroes now, and part of me wishes I’d done it, but...
