Entertaining thriller with a sci-fi twist
alain-kapel55 March 2022
A solid action thriller about a man who wakes up after an accident to find out he's not the person he used to be. To make matters worse, it turns out he'll "transform" into someone else every 12 hours.

The sci-fi gimmick is mostly used for a Bourne-style recipe; for every bit of mystery that the protagonist manages to clarify we get a round of fistfights, chases or shootouts. I wish that the film did more with its concept but it still manages to entertain throughout its runtime. There's almost no need to highlight the film's cinematography as it is as polished as we've come to expect from Korean thrillers. The last action scene is obviously heavily inspired by John Wick, but that doesn't take away from its intensity and well-done choreography.

Recommended for fans of high-concept Korean thrillers; however, they might need to lower their expectations a bit since this isn't really a top-tier pick in the genre.

A fun sci-fi thriller that demands the utmost attention of its audience
dmansel22 April 2022
After waking up from a car crash unable to remember anything about his life, a man begins regaining consciousness in a new body every 12 hours. Now, he must piece together his identity, all while evading attacks from pursuing agents and dangerous criminals alike. But with no memory and no allies his time is running out.

Much like Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, the essence of the story is straightforward: a simple plan gone sideways. The uncomplicated premise of the story is bolstered by the science fiction aspect of it and all the characters that inhabit the world. Something of a cross between Memento and Total Recall, Spiritwalker is sure to confuse, frustrate, and delight as I-an races against the clock to reclaim his existence, provided he's not captured or killed first. Labeled in some places as an action film, the movie is light on viable action scenes, choosing instead to focus more on the unveiling of the narrative and less on throwing hands. Saving the best action for the final act, when the film really kicks into high gear, it's disappointing that we don't get more of the high-quality action throughout but also understandable; director Yoon Jae-geun is more concerned with mining the story's elements than glossing over them to get to the next fast paced beat.

Starring Yoon Kye-sang, Spritwalker showcases the former K-pop star's ability to be an everyman, vulnerable enough for the audience to willingly join him on his journey of literal self discovery. Kye-sang manages to sell I-an as a desperate, driven man searching for answers and holding on to every scrap of information he can find. While not always in the frame, I-an is the forefront of the story, and even when he's not on screen, Kye-sang's presence is felt. At the end of his rope, Kye-sang is at his best when I-an reaches his lowest lows and most confused moments.

Also starring Lim Ji-yeon as Jin-ah, the character serves as a focus point for I-an. As he stumbles from clue to clue, it seems that most roads lead through or to Jin-ah. Ji-yeon is magnificent in the film, playing Jin-ah as confident, clever, and tough as nails. Far from just a damsel in distress, Jin-ah is out to find her own answers and Ji-yeon brings a steel to the character that makes for excellent chemistry with I-an, albeit in scenes that are far too brief. In a more subdued role is Park Yon-woo as Director Park, the veteran actor bringing a duality to the agent that is chasing I-an throughout the film. Appearing sparsely in the film at first, and more frequently as the pieces are fitted together, Yon-woo looms in the background as a possible friend or foe.

A shoutout must be given to Park Ji-hwan's Haengryeo, the always hustling and delightfully shifty homeless man that initially finds I-an after the film's opening car wreck. The comedic relief, Ji-hwan's highlight comes in a dizzying who's-on-first routine with I-an that, thanks to director Yoon Jae-guen's nifty bit of handiwork, is both amusing and poignant to the storytelling. While disappearing for most of the third act, Haengreyo is still pivotal to the key events of the movie, and his presence on screen never disappoints.

Written and directed by Yoon Jae-geun, Spiritwalker uses every trick in the book to keep the audience off balance and guessing as the narrative threads slowly unravel. Seamlessly blending together different actors playing the same character, we're just as confused as I-an as he attempts to recreate past events to form a narrative that sheds light on his amnesia. The decision to tell a nonlinear story from the viewpoint of an unreliable narrator is the film's best selling point; Jae-geun uses that initial confusion to place his stamp on what's essentially an old school cops and robbers story. Cinematographer Lee Seong-je brings a workmanlike quality to the picture: apart from a few clever flourishes and extended tracking shots, Seong-je keeps the camera steady, letting the complex nature of the storytelling be the film's most prominent feature. When the action kicks into high gear the last 20 minutes of the film, Seong gives the audience a clear picture of what happening without excessive edits, letting the action play out on screen.

Overall, Spiritwalker is a fun sci-fi thriller that demands the utmost attention of its audience. The slow rollout of information, requiring attention to detail, makes this a phones down film that may require more than one viewing to fully grasp and understand. Yoon Jae-guen's direction is solid and Yoon Kye-sang provides a great unreliable narrator for the audience to root for. At 108 minutes, the quick pace begs the audience's awareness from the first moments to the last. A great Friday evening movie to kickstart the weekend, Spiritwalker is a worthy check out for fans of early Chris Nolan-esque storytelling who are willing to put in the work.

A fast mover
Leofwine_draca11 June 2022
A solid Korean thriller that boasts some commendable action sequences; it seems to me that Korean cinema has moved on from being inspired by the BOURNE films to instead being inspired by the JOHN WICK franchise. And who can blame them? This one's a version of the perennial 'body jump' storyline, and it's as complex and fast-paced as befits that premise, so much so that there's never a dull second, just the plot moving inexorably onwards.

Unique Revenge
InterMedia-122113 July 2022
The idea of concept is amazing and something you don't see it usually, including Action and Sci-Fi mixed very good with a lot of potential.

The man was killed, but his soul was here to take the revenge and save his wife.

Definitely doesn't deserve this rating 6.2, It's on general 7.5/10.

Entertaining..
yuseralhaj9 June 2022
Entertaining but far from being perfect. It was a bit confusing at the beginning, later on things got clear gradually, some events and scenes weren't convincing to me, more or less mannered, however I liked the action stuff, the continuous tension which was pleasant, overall, not bad.

Massive Action Sequences but a Lack of Content
kluseba25 April 2022
Spiritwalker is a South-Korean science-fiction thriller that looks very promising on paper but fails to deliver the goods as a cinematic experience. While the main idea is promising and the cinematography is up to the highest contemporary standards, the movie has a few lengths and the story is overall quite unconvincing.

The movie revolves around a man suffering from amnesia after a car crash who is found by a homeless man who is trying to loot his vehicle. The man gets transported to the nearest hospital where police officers are confused when the victim is unable to recall much of his past. He gets discharged from the hospital and soon seems to find out where he has been living and working. Just as things seem to become clearer, he suddenly has a strange seizure and awakes as a different man who is having lunch with his mother. He storms out of the restaurant and is trying to understand what has been happening to him. However, he soon realizes that he is in danger since members of a shady organization are tracking him down and attempting to arrest and even assassinate him. The stranger is able to ward off his opponents as he comes to the conclusion that he must have been some sort of special agent. As he is switching bodies every twelve hours, the protagonist is trying to find out what relates these different people with the help of the homeless man who found him and a mysterious woman who could have been his professional and personal partner in the past.

This film convinces on several levels. First of all, the main idea of the story is really intriguing and offers dystopian science-fiction at its very best. Up next, the cinematography of this film is excellent with precise camera work, dynamic lighting techniques and spectacular stunts. The martial arts sequences of this movie deserve to be mentioned separately as they stand out with much dynamism.

However, this movie also has several flaws. After an exciting first thirty minutes, the movie fails to progress and the story falls flat. The exchangeable acting performances lack identity as the protagonist is portrayed by numerous different actors throughout the film. The movie's conclusion is filled with great action sequences but the intellectual side suffers quite a lot.

Overall, Spiritwalker doesn't live up to its hype and qualifies as barely above average science-fiction thriller. This movie had the potential to be a true highlight with a cleverer script and better actors. This is why this movie's downfall is particularly disappointing. Here's hope that a movie with a similar plot but a more intellectual twist might one day see the light of day.

Unique Korean movie that can be remade as another Hollywood remake
jordondave-2808531 March 2023
(220) Spiritwalker/ Yoocheitalja SCIENCE-FICTION/ CRIME DRAMA/ ACTION

Written and directed by Yoon Jae-Keun with Kang I-an (Yoon Kyesang) as the "Spiritwalker" in which the star's spirit or entire personality inadvertently takes over another person's body every time it hits 12 PM or 12 AM, after he wakes up from a devastating car accident, which at the opening appeared like the only thing the star was suffering from was amnesia. As the movie progresses, the spirit of I-an is searching for answers for 'how' and 'why' this is happening as the answers regards a incriminating flash drive, and an experimented drug in which he himself is incapable to understand at the first few stages.

At the opening, viewers are shown who are the bad guys but as the movie is progressing exposes to more villains as viewers are part of the protagonists strange journey.

A Korean version of someone's consciousness randomly switching & inhabiting different bodies twice a day with criminal activity as the backdrop. Confusingly not believable.

Got style no substance

To those that say Korean movie has evolve from bourne to johnwick.

Bruh, korean movie has always been good from long before, go watch Oldboy, that fightscene on the narrow hallway.

Asian film has always do more gore stuff before Hollywood. Like RaidRedemption & ManfromNowhere. Stop "hollywood done this & that 1st."

Anyway there're other better swap body Korean movies out there like Beauty Inside that done it way better than this movie.

Instead of having 1person acting different role & only have other body he possessed to only appear in mirror reflection, they should've follow BeautyInside idea of having other actor/actress do the stunt, fight scene etc & that way the movie will be better.

Anyway 6/10 rating. Could've done better but really the story is lacking. Good action movie? Maybe but for 1time watch only.

Anyway if you like this hero go watch TheOutlaws. That's his best film/movie.

I Would have Liked a More Unambiguous Explanation
Breumaster5 June 2022
The movie starts with an interesting scenario, I was curious about. But it became fuddled by progress. I wish there was a red line to follow in it, something more than just the main characters to keep up understanding. At the end I got a doubtful impression that I watched a movie I didn't understand, expect the case there wasn't really something to understand. The drug thing wasn't a good explanation. It mixes up drug phantasies with real-life action. I wish it was more self-explaining and clear to the eye. Normally I really like Korean movies which cross the border to Europe, they are mostly very good told, but I quarrel with that one.

Switch
kosmasp17 October 2021
It's more flying or hopping rather than "walking", although there is a lot of walking in the movie too (outside of driving and car chases that is). And then there is fighting, either with guns or hand to hand combat. But I got ahead of myself ... a lot.

If like me you have discovered Korean action and thriller cinema (either a long time ago or because Parasite gave you a reason too), I do not have to convince you. Actually the movie itself is more than able to convince you - with more than a tight plot and story, that has as many twists and turns as one can imagine. I would wish that the main character would be a bit more charismatic and I know you can fault the movie on certain details too, but not on how it is thought through (convenient timings and other stuff aside too).

Great action, amazing cinematography and a sound design that is as subtle as it is genius. Another winner - even if won't be another Oscar (winner)

Slow walk builds to Korean John Wick
compugor27 January 2023
The special effects live up to the intriguing sci-fi premise, but the interpersonal presentation is inconsistently revealed and murkily convoluted. The initial slow pacing causes the setup of the story to drag out. Then the hyper action-packed finale comes in the form of a frenzied resolution without enough satisfaction of the plot complications.

The dubbed dialog mis-coordinates with the subtitles for increased confusion and sometimes results in unintended hilarity.

The bad guys have way too much of the upper hand throughout, and there is nowhere near enough righteous retribution. Even so, it manages to have an upbeat ending and turns out to be worth the watch.

Hollywood Level Action Out of South Korea
tkdlifemagazine16 March 2022
SPIRITWALKER is a complex thriller from the first moment the film begins. We are dropped in the midst of a story where every twelve (12) hours it seems our main character's essence is somehow transferred into a new body. His memories seem to be retained from the start of the film, but not prior to the car crash that opens the film. He does not know who he is and how he got into this situation. What he does know is that there are dangerous people trying to kill him; criminals and, possibly, intelligence agents. He just needs to reconstruct the puzzle pieces to find out why?

Director Yoon Jae-keun (Heartbeat), along with award-winning martial arts choreographers Park Young-sik and Chung Seong-Ho (SAG Awards, Best Stunt Ensemble, "Squid Game"), bring to life the action-packed thriller

While the movie is complex it is not confusing. The complexity is not superfluous. It is part of what makes it interesting. As each change occurs the layers of the onion are peeled back and we learn a little more information towards solving this riddle. Is Yoon Kye-sang's character crazy? Is there a supernatural explanation? The film converges in an exciting climax.

Yoon Kye-sang, a former K-pop singer, is very good in the lead role. So is the supporting cast, which includes Park Yong-Woo (Nailed), Lim Ji-Yeon (Obsessed, High Society) and Park Ji-Hwan (The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure). They all do a good job of making you feel that the lead character's personage does change, even though Yoon Kye-sang, essentially, plays all of the characters in the transference.

This is a psychological thriller but it is also an action film. It has its share of well choreographed and realistic fight sequences. The climactic fight scene is riveting and fun to watch. This is top notch martial arts and action choreography. The action is engaging. This movie has a lot going for it.

This film has many of the underlying themes that are prevalent in South Korean Cinema. It is also a high quality film that rivals anything Hollywood has produced.

Its NOT a Sci-Fi Its A Crime Thriller With A Supernatural Twist!
silicontourist27 November 2022
Lets get something straight before anything else...this is NOT a sci-fi film in any shape or form! If anything it is a mild supernatural film as it involves a man's spirit jumping/hopping into the bodies of several people who are all involved in a corrupt drug crime caper.

Korean films are the most interesting being made today...I love them. This is a non stop action packed twisting story with good acting, excellent fight choreography and a superb bunch of actors who blend well and make this thriller special. The opening is a bit weak as there is no clear distinction into what exactly is happening to the protagonist Ian; in fact he makes about 2 or 3 body hops before you grasp what is going on and where the film is heading to.

If you like Korean films you will love this but if you don't know what Korean films are like, give yourself a treat. Its way more entertaining than the pathetic hogwash that is incessantly churned out by the American market!
