Slow but good episode
85122225 June 2022
Greetings from Lithuania.

3rd and 4th episodes of "1883" were slower then the first two. And they felt a bit smaller. That said i still liked them. Setting is breathing and acting is top notch in this series so far and I expect nothing less here. Despite being a slow episode this is still a drama of highest calliber.

The Land Will Never Love You Back
douglasmcbroom9 January 2022
This outstanding series is a cross between 'Lonesome Dove' and 'Open Range.' This episode focused on the hardships of leaving one life behind and beginning anew, whilst having to do battle with Mother Nature.

The river crossing scene was absolutely brilliant.

Taylor Sheridan is not afraid to let the story unfold at a story-tellers pace. We get to know more about the characters and their motivations. We begin to root for them and admire their zeal for a new life.

Isabel May continues to be a standout. Her narration is a highlight. Sam Elliot is excellent as the guy who may be exasperatingly tough, but you want him in charge. LaMonica Garrett had a strong episode as did Eric Nelson. Our two country music stars, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill continue to hold their own.

Moonlight Sonata magistral!!
wuillepf10 January 2022
This piece of music, Moonlight Sonata Op.27 No.2 (Beethoven) was masterfully placed underlining the emotion and drama of this episode of the pioneers' journey. This underlines once more the quality and the sensitivity of the scriptwriters as well as the direction never sinking into sensationalism or voyeurism but well in the accuracy and the nuance.

Elsa playing Piano
julieameyers10 January 2022
This show plays out like a movie. The cinematography is beautiful. I love the relationships between these characters. Elsa playing the Moonlight Sonata during the river crossing was extremely creative and emotional. So good!

I know what I am now
slak96u9 January 2022
Truly compelling episode of television, just really. This is the most "well done" episode thus far, the writing, acting, music and cinematography, all excellent.

The story is settling in a bit, not so much slowing down as developing. It's a good pace, very pleasing, reminiscent of a great novel. The focus on the immigrants was great, especially Noemi and Thomas. The plotline of the Germans letting go of who they were and accepting that they are now pioneers was good drama. The focus is undoubtedly still Elsa and the Dutton family, but the side plots, the individuals who are on this journey with them is great. Specifically, Shea Brennan/Sam Elliot who is a lock for an Emmy/GG nomination.

Made me cry!
stenneberg10 March 2022
This episode deserves 10 points for the river crossing alone. Having Elsa play Beethoven's mournful and beautiful "moonshine sonata" and contrasting it to the horrifying scenes at the river crossing was pure genius. Sure, you can get all cynical and accuse the writers of being manipulative, as some people here do. But I am not ashamed to say that in the end I was crying with Elsa, overcome by emotion. And the next moment I was laughing out loud when Ennis quipped "Don't know any happy ones?!". So good!

Undoubtedly a spectacular episode, it's a bit slow but it's beautiful to look at, ELSA's narration sounds like poetry, I'm looking forward to the next one!!!

So you're telling me people sink?
tinyfordst14 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
People who drown don't do it like they did in the show and that bugs me. People don't just sink horizontally under water paddling up forcing themselves to go down. Humans float (ask any person who has ever been in a pool) when they simply hold their breath. It's the breathing out that causes you to go down bit by bit. Not paddling to the bottom with everything you have.

Still a good episode. But maybe they should've asked a lifeguard if the most emotional scene of the episode was at all realistic.

Best episode yet!
rann_rushing9 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just love this series and this episode was the best. The contrast between the river crossing and Elsa playing the piano was excellent. I so look forward to each episode and the fate of Elsa. We only know for sure from Yellowstone that James, Margaret and John complete the journey. And she does have an arrow through her from a previous look ahead. But obviously, we need her narration for many seasons to come.

Dramatic and Heartbreaking!
KatWoman10 February 2023
So many reviews have complained that this episode was slow and boring, but I found it compelling and striking. How many of us have truly thought about what our ancestors went through? I can't even imagine!

I've seen Tim McGraw in several acting roles before, and he's great as always, but this is the first thing I've seen Faith Hill in - her character is feisty, beautiful, strong, and wonderful, as is Isabel May as their daughter.

I'm really enjoying this show and cannot wait to see what happens next. My husband really likes it, too. It's nice to have something interesting to watch together that we're also learning history from.

Filled a pleasant hour but..
Saadsak10 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The writing is rubbish.

Fine acting, great photography but could they not have hired a scriptwriter or two? They are on the banks of a wooded stream and one of the settlers is a carpenter. So the obvious solution would be to chop down a few trees, build a raft and haul everything across. But no. Sam Elliott is throwing a strop and everyone's prize possessions are being dumped on the ground to lighten the wagons.

No wonder that by 1883 the real pioneers took the train.

Beautiful music and awful tragedy
sue-0623919 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The lengthy scene where Ella plays the gorgeous Moonlight Sonata on a piano reluctantly abandoned by one of the German pioneers, who is a musician, is SO powerful and moving. As she plays this exquisitely sad piece of music, the scenes change to show the terrifying river crossing, leading to the loss of lives of some of those who have already had to abandon all their meagre possessions in order to lighten the weight of their carriages.

Watched by an awestruck Ennis, Ella plays with increasing emotion even in such a desolate situation.

It is such an amazingly filmed part of this episode, and leaves you moved to tears.

The first average episode so far
efd-1046712 January 2022
Not a bad episode but flat compared to the previous ones, more death, first kisses and loss, too much emotion and too little plot or action.

Some of the scenes reflected low budget or money saving photography also Faith Hill overacts a lot, she's permanently on stage, she's always got a look or a comment, it's too much.

Zzzzzz.....
dragonoso11 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What a (yawn) snooze fest of an episode. Teenage angst combined with over dramatized writing. Two episodes at the same river and they have progressed about half a mile. There are some great actors in this show, but at this rate we'll be in season 5 before they reach their destination. For now, gonna give it the benefit of the doubt and tune in to the next episode, but if this trend continues, gonna watch Lonesome Dove for the umpteenth time in lieu of investing any more time in 1883.

Beauty and hardship
lor_3 July 2023
There's a romantic strain to this episode, with something of a respite from the harsh, violent-tinged action that has launched this rugged series. But Sheridan's script is careful to continue the sense of life & death consequences of the immigrants' decision to seek a new land.

Also, the hard edges of the central character, starting with taciturn Moses-like Sam Elliott, are being softened a bit, expanding them toward 3-dimensional figures. Sheridan's ability to balance his lead players with significant supporting roles, so efficiently demonstrated on "Yellowstone", is solidly on view here.

A wonderful scene has Elsa playing a piano that must be left behind at the river crossing to underscore the silent horrors of the actual crossing, the type of elegiac touch that separates Sheridan's approach from both traditional and revisionist Westerns.

The episode where they dump all their belongings..
theohjortmar21 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episode where they dump all their belongings because of 25-40 centimeters of water. Amazing trumpet episode.

Sorry for posting a spoiler but it is a mastery of horrible acting and horrible mood tunes to every scene to steer emotion. What a joke.

The Crossing
bobcobb30118 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show has been good so far, but it also feels like we should just be hooked on any dangerous scenario that they present to us and so far that is not the case. It was an engaging episode and the river presented the kind of challenge we do not often hear about when we examine this time period, but it also featured a lot of sitting around and moping.

Hard to not like the story and the characters they have given us so far, but this one was not perfect from start to finish. Still, Paramount+ has something with this show and while it looks like it is destined to be a mini-series I wish it could have run longer.

Just wondering something
TruthbeTold262610 January 2022
So I'm pretty sure the season is already written and filmed but if not and the higher ups read reviews...please, for the love of god, stop with this teenage girl BS. I cannot stand her narrations, singing, or basically anything else! Other then that i enjoy the show so far. It seems like every top end show for the last decade has put horrible female characters that destroy the show. Stop doing that!!!

Slow, slow, slow
tlawrenceshannon-9911211 January 2022
Worst episode so far. Long, drawn out scenes full of meaningless dialog that add nothing to the story. A river crossing splattered with 2-3 second MTV camera shots accompanied by a Beethoven piano piece.

head scratcher episode
johnhsmith-000568 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Good episode as far as production values, and I get the metaphor of crossing the water to a new life, kind of like baptism.

But the mechanics of the crossing don't make sense. This was a river crossing in ideal conditions. During the day, in good weather, not under attack from anyone. There were also plenty of trees around. Couldn't they build a raft to ferry the supplies and people across??

But assuming they were in a huge hurry, couldn't they at least attach a rope to each person so they don't drown? And Sam Elliot's threat to burn a wagon down didn't make any sense. If the wagon was too heavy for the river, the worst that would happen is it would be lost anyway.

Every episode several people are killed. How is anyone even left? So far this wagon crossing is far more dangerous than the smallpox they were so afraid of!

Nothing exiting in this episode
mhdakhtar89 January 2022
They didn't release an episode last week and nothing exiting in this episode. Was looking for more actually, specially when Yellowstone S4 is over. Sometimes, netflix series is better, all episodes at once.

The Crossing is easily

Warning: Spoilers
The WORST episode so far.

This slow walk of nothingness was painful to get through. The singing and piano playing for 20 minutes while people tried to cross the river almost made me stop the episode & reconsider even keeping up with this series.

If this trend continues, I will lose interest fast!

Griff303010 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It makes me laugh when I read reviews calling this episode compelling and the best show on tv.

Let's recap what happened (spoilers): Elsa gets pants Elsa gets kissed Gypsy watches Thomas eat Duttons cross at night Furniture gets dumped Elsa plays piano The river is crossed (Yawn)

I'll give it a few stars for the scenery, sets, costumes, and Sam Elliott.
