There’s something about Emir Kusturica that makes him different than the rest of directors. This Serbian director is definitely crazy enough to say whatever he wants, he’s quite interesting guy, and he talks no shit, which you probably know if you read his interviews. And ok, his movies are not blockbusters but at least we [...]

Last week, right in the middle of the Cannes Film Festival, when half the world's film journalists were taking in the new Terrence Malick and debating the Festival's decision to throw Lars von Trier under the bus, Variety's Nick Vivarelli broke the news that the Venice Film Festival was suddenly all but waving its hands and calling out, "You think you're having fun now…" Vivarelli reported that Roman Polanski's Carnage (an adaptation of Yasmina Reza's award-winning play, God of Carnage, with Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C Reilly), David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method (based on Christopher Hampton's play, The Talking Cure, with Viggo Mortensen as Freud, Michael Fassbender as Jung and Keira Knightley as Sabina Spielrein), Aleksandr Sokurov's Faust (the fourth and final installment in his Men of Power series), Philippe Garrel's A Burning Hot Summer (Un été brûlant, "a remake...

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that are moments away from lensing and in the same token, we feel are worth signaling out. We ring in the new year with nine titles going into production this month that are worth pointing out. Among the projects that were originally slated for January but are slightly pushed back we have Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton's Will starring Paul Rudd Zach Galifianakis, the new Stephen Daldry film Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Polanski's Carnage. This January can officially be called the "Abi Morgan" month as the scribe has not one but two projects that'll be lensed: Steve McQueen’s sex addiction drama Shame, and The Iron Lady, starring Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. In U.S productions we have Joe Carnahan's The Grey - which we feel is oddly...

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that are moments away from lensing and in the same token, we feel are worth signaling out. This November there is a significant drop in mention worthy titles -- but we have three seasoned auteurs and a female director making her debut. Emir Kusturica is supposed to commence filming a comedy with Tahar Rahim toplining. Commencing a production this late might hinder a Cannes 2011 debut. Cool Water is about two Palestinian brothers who smuggle the dead body of their father from Jerusalem to Ramallah with the Israeli Police, a bunch of terrorists and the Russian Mafia breathing down their necks. Let's hope for the old Kusturica to show up. Terence Davies (another Cannes regular) is adapting Terence Rattigan' play with Rachel Weisz in the lead for The Deep Blue Sea. She plays the wife...

Cologne, Germany -- Europe's co-production fund Eurimages has doled out subsidies for upcoming projects from veteran directors including Emir Kusturica, Lars von Trier and the Dardenne brothers.
"Melancholia," Von Trier's take on the disaster movie starring Kirsten Dunst and Kiefer Sutherland, picked up €600,000 ($735,000) in Eurimages funding; Kusturica's Palestinian comedy "Cool Water" secured a €400,000 ($500,000) boost and the Dardenne's latest drama, "Delivrez-moi!" received a €450,000 ($550,000) production grant.
Among the other productions benefiting from this round of Eurimages largesse were Nikolaj Arcel's Danish period drama "A Royal Affair" and Paolo Sorrentino's "This Must Be The Place," starring Sean Pean and Frances McDormand, which both secured €600,000 ($750,000) in co-pro funding.

If the Main Competition suffered because of the lack of film output from last year (Venice and Tiff have already seen the benefits), next year's edition of the Cannes film festival is already shaping up to be a fantastic year with names like Pedro, Von Trier, Dardennes, Cronenberg, PTA and Salles in the possible line-up. For those who made a case about there not being much female representation -- they'll be pleased to see that the latest works from Andrea Arnold and Lynne Ramsay should be in the line-up --- and although I didn't add him to the list below, we could also see Steve McQueen's latest project in the fest. Here are a list of 20 projects I think will be in the fest next year. - If the Main Competition suffered because of the lack of film output from last year (Venice and Tiff have already seen the...

Both projects count as early Cannes 2011 predictions - as they are both going to be lensed this summer. Cool Water is based on Gabriel Bornstein’s script, this is being billed as a road movie with a twist. Two Palestinian brothers must...

Red Carpet Lineup: each monday (oops, it's Wednesday!) a random batch of movie peeps out and about. Who is Where and Why? And What (are they wearing)?
from left to right: Chloe Moretz just turned 13 and she'll be ubiquitous before anyone can decide whether they want to see her constantly. I have only seen her in (500) Days of Summer in which she essayed the beyond cliche role of "little person who is wiser than adults", a blight on an otherwise great movie. I can't blame her for that exactly but I hate that there's no ümläüts (or whatever the heck they're called) hanging over her name. And that I Can blame her for. It's spelled Chloë, right big mouth? The fanboys already love "Chloe" [sic] in advance for being "Hit Girl" in Kick-Ass . That's the movie she's been out promoting this week here with shiny checkers (dress) and snarky accessory (face...

French actor Tahar Rahim is in negotiations to take the lead in Serbian director Emir Kusturica’s Cool Water.
If you had a chance to see Rahim’s performance in Oscar-nominated drama A Prophet this year, then you’ll agree that he may be the young actor but he’s definitely the talented one.
On the other hand, Kusturica could be just a perfect director for this kind of movie.
And yes, we already know that he’s busy with that Pancho Villa movie, together with Johnny Depp (or if you prefer the full title Seven Friends Of Pancho Villa And The Woman With Six Fingers huh?) but we are really happy to hear he’s already having a new project like this.
And, if you are familiar with his work, then you know he’s best known as a man controversial at home and abroad, but he’s definitely...

French actor Tahar Rahim caused a storm with his performance in Oscar-nommed drama A Prophet this year. Where do you go from there? Well, a Palestinian comedy, by all accounts. The young actor is in negotiations to take the lead in Serbian director Emir Kusturica’s Cool Water, which is looking to shoot in September. Rahim would play one of two brothers who attempt to smuggle their dead father’s body from Jerusalem to Ramallah while hiding from Israeli police and Russian mobsters. Mark this one a determinedly black...

Coming hot off of the success of the Oscar nominated film A Prophet, star Tahar Rahim has lined himself up with a few new projects.
Along with the upcoming Bitch, Variety (via /Film) is now reporting that Rahim is negotiating to star in the new film, Cool Water, set to be directed by Emir Kusturica. The film will follow “two Palestinian brothers who try to smuggle the body of their recently deceased father from Jerusalem to Ramallah while trying to avoid Israeli police and Russian mobsters.” Kusturica has also made a name for himself with a new Pancho Villa biopic starring Johnny Depp (set to shoot in February of next year).

This is one of those articles that seems like pushing a rock uphill -- possibly unfamiliar names in the title, a movie that we don't have much info on, etc. Why should you care about Cool Water? For one, because the newly cast Tahar Rahim is amazing in Jacques Audiard's A Prophet. And because Emir Kusturica can be a great director, and much of his recent output has been hard to find. He's got that Pancho Villa movie brewing with Johnny Depp, but in the meantime Cool Water sounds like the Kusturica film I'm really going to want to see. Variety reports that Rahim is negotiating to star in the film, where he would play "one of two Palestinian brothers who try to smuggle the body of their recently deceased father from Jerusalem to Ramallah while trying to avoid Israeli police and Russian mobsters." During the first five days of the Berlinale and Efm, I was hardly able to see a film, but I was happily busy the last three days catching up on whatever movies I could get tickets to and had been too busy to see earlier during the main events of the market.

We finally have confirmation thatJohnny Depp will take on the role of Pancho Villa in directorEmir Kusturica's upcoming project about the Mexican Revolutionary general.
The film, originally called Seven Friends Of Pancho Villa And The Woman With Six Fingers, will now be titled Wild Roses, Tender Roses, and will begin shooting in February 2011 now that Depp and Kusturica, who worked previously together on Arizona Dream, have found time in both of their schedules to fit in the project.
The film will be shot in Spain and in Kusturica's Serbian studio, while Kusturica's band, the No Smoking Orchestra, will do music for the film as well. As promised, the film will indeed be shot in Spanish, with Depp performing his dialogue in that language.
Before all that though, Kusturica will be working in Israel this summer on Cool Water, a film about a male stripper who returns to his native Middle East for his father's funeral.
