Hilarious (with the right friends to explain it)!
germanbini10 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'm American and had the great pleasure to visit Istanbul and visit with a new Turkish friend who introduced me to this funny movie. We watched the video with English subtitles, and he explained the nuances of the Turkish jokes (çak "chuck" means "high five;" the Indian jokes, the cola joke, the puppets, etc - too many to mention) while I explained to him the nuances of the English jokes (Johnny Brokeback and others). I hadn't laughed that hard in years. Nice cinematography, amusing storytelling, and it left me wanting more - I wish they would please make the sequel where they go to China! Leave (some of) your brain at the door and just enjoy the fun!

How the West Was Fun...
dilarasdad19 January 2011
Having to wait until this feature came out on DVD was no disappointment, just be prepared to read subtitles - which is OK with me.

Being quite familiar with some of the idiosyncrasies of Turkish life from a foreigners view, I had a blast watching this collaborative production mix some of the finer points of the old west with the comedic lifestyle of a few Ottoman Turks making their first diplomatic trek to the Wild West.

As always, I enjoy the humor of Cem Yilmaz, but in order to really enjoy this film, one has to be quite familiar with the 'finer points' of living amongst our Turkish brethren – it's the little things that mean a lot.

'Chuck!' You know what I mean...

Yahsi Bati is not enough for introducing East and West to each other.
talhacelik16 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Yahsi Bati is a Turkish Western Comedy movie. Very Successful at make up, scenery, stages and costumes.

Contains some partial nudity, lots of slang words, bad language, alcohol and tobacco using.

Casting of same actors : some of actors are friends of Cem Yilmaz from his other movies like Ozan Guven, Ozkan Ugur, Zafer Algoz.

There are some interesting scenes that Turkish People not used to. Cem Yilmaz and Omer Faruk Sorak wants to be like Quentin Tarantino.

You can see religious views like Islam, Christiany, Judaism and Totemism that relatives would not like.

Movie is telling us how West looks to East, and how East looks to West. The name of Yahsi Bati (Beatiful West) is similar Vahsi Bati (Wild West).

Yahsi Bati criticizes Ottoman State, Turkey, USA, Europe Governments, Members of Christianity, Islam and Jewishness, Churchs. Wants to give a message of a peaceful world.

You will see oil wrestlers and allusion to Brockback Mountain.

There are some sponsors of this movie like Avea, Turk Telekom, Ttnet, Cola Turka, Ulker. But Cola Turka is in everywhere of the movie because of highly supporting of the budget of movie. Other ads in movie are Google, Robert College, Cherokee, There are lots of allusions to the secret formula of Coca Cola.

Visual Effects and animations are cool, scenes, decors, make ups, costumes and budget is really good, acting is good too but the screenplay is not enough. Must be better. The humor used in the movie is not international. Lots of older Turkish people would not understand too.

The final of movie is showing us the next movie of Cem Yilmaz can be in the Far East like China or Japan.

There are some goofs I have found in the movie are ; In the 65th minute, Aziz Vefa was shot from his shoulder. He hold the left shoulder but in the 66th minute the gunshot wound is in the right shoulder.

Lemi was fainted in front of the totem. In the first scene his arm was near to his body, but in the second scene his arm is open and far from his body.

In the 97th minute of the movie the date was written 18th July 1881 but in the fifth minute of movie, the date was written as 27 April 1881. "th" was forgotten.

You will love it if you are smart enough and you are from Turkey:)

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what people expect from a comedy movie. Like one of the reviews says; should it be dark? should it give an important message? should be ironic? should it make fun of certain things? should it be about human mind, or human beings at all? No!! Definitely no! I cannot say I liked other comedy movies of Cem Yilmaz except "Hokkabaz" if you consider it a comedy. I am a fan of his stand-up shows, I really like the things that he makes fun of and the way he makes fun of those things. When I watched "GORA" and "AROG", I couldn't find them smart although he is a very smart guy. But, this movie is different:) You must be from Turkey to understand everything. There are other things that people not from Turkey will find funny and interesting, but in order to laugh - I mean, really laugh- you must know how Turkish people, especially people in 30s, perceive certain concepts in American culture. I always thought that those who really like Cem Yilmaz's style are somehow familiar from the world that he is from, i.e., with a certain level of education, familiar with previous work as a cartoonist or similar works. This movie is definitely his work; smart, funny in his style.. No messages, no irony (at a serious level at least).. You will laugh and laugh only. It is all about the cliché; the things about America that my generation in Turkey talks, laughs, or thinks, the things in American culture that seem different to us or we had a hard time to understand. It is not making fun of American culture or anything. It is making fun of how he perceives things. But you should be careful, as one of the other reviews says, there are a lot of funny stuff and it is difficult to catch all.

Most Successfull Art Work In His Country
orhanodabasi7 September 2018
For most cases, quite poor art work is seen in Turkish movies. But Cem Yilmaz and his team are doing a great job by designing environment with all its details. Well written scenario and lively characters are making this movie as one of landmarks of early Turkish cinema history.

So many Jokes that you won't be able to catch them all!
osmantalu7 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
People who don't understand Comedy won't like this movie. But if you're an avid fan of comedy, you must watch Yahsi Bati for sure. First of all there is trick in the movie title. Yashi Bati means "handsome west", where normally it is "Vahsi Bati", which means "Wild West".

This movie takes place in 19th century, where Ottoman Empire Sultan appoints 2 of his men to take a beautiful diamond of enormous size as a gift to the American President. You might guess what adventures these 2 men would face the moment they step into the American Wild West. This a truly beautifully made cowboy movie with added Turkish humor by Cem Yilmaz, the funniest stand up comedian and actor in Turkey for the last decade. He took Turks to space and made fun of traditional alien movies with G.O.R.A, then he was unwilling sent back in time to Stone Age in A.R.O.G and tried to fast-forward the first civilization while having clichés from Jurassic park and now he is in the American Wild West. If you're not Turkish and would still want to watch these movies, GORA and AROG are English subtitled and you'll still get similar fun experience.

As of Yahsi Bati, the movie was filmed just outside Istanbul but really feels like Texas in 1800's. In addition Decor and outfits are amazing. There is too much swearing in the movie but they are all well configured. I would strongly recommend this movie.

recommended for real people, not for the film critics who has no idea about the world
TigerMoods2 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
People who think that they know about movies usually review comedy movies as disappointments unless they are dark... "Yahsi Bati" is not dark at all so get ready to hear comments like "it's a big disappointment" or "it's toilet humor"...

Cem Yilmaz is making fun of clichés for years, that's what he used to do as a stand up comedian and that's exactly the genre he is successfully making films for years now. He swears a lot just to show that we are swearing a lot in our lives but we are not tolerant to hear people swearing in films (such a hypocrisy)... He also makes fun of stupid clichés in the type of film he is making (for example western clichés such as bouncing bullets or horse whisperer in Yahsi Bati)... Playing with the meanings of the words is his other method but it is no different than what he had done for years as a stand up comedian...

just go and watch the film, it was brilliantly shot, well acted and laughter guaranteed...

The script for kids, jokes for adults.
preseva-113 January 2010
After watching this movie, you will find very hard to get rid of the image of two Ottomans in the Wild West- image that implants itself into your mind for a numerous of days after consuming the product. But despite all efforts, this movie (that was designed to be a hilarious comedy) does not live up to expectations. The main slow down and confusion is resulted by a strange and naive holes in the script during it's middle part. Almost useless scenes in the church that have no motive, intro or outro, confusing turn-overs (the sheriff is talking friendly to the lead guy in one of the scenes, the lead guy exits the scene, 10 seconds later the message-boy approaches the lead guy to tell him that the sheriff is challenging him to a death-match duel)makes you think that you missed the whole sequence in the middle. Turn-overs in the script, mainly designed just to produce the thin motive for the next (hopefully) comic scene are not very seldom. But the comic outcome IS seldom. Maybe the source of real trouble in this Sorak- Yılmaz collaboration is the gap between language-based, sitcom jokes (that are a mother- ground for Yilmaz comedy-style) and Sorak's effort to tell the story more cinematic,picture-wise. Final product is trapped somewhere in the middle - sitcom diluted with something supposed-to-be a serious cinema. Usage of more than one camera on some scenes sometimes result with a series of lined shots that have no readable sign - shots that are used just as a bridge to squeeze timing and jump over the long gaps in the scene. They look more like a "don't mind this" inserts, rather than a planned shots. Anyway, visually film looks good, story-wise looks bad, comedy-wise looks decent enough, but not hilarious - as one could expect from a master comedian Cem Yımaz definitely is.

Best Cem Yilmaz Film So Far
mustican9 January 2010
Cem Yilmaz is a great comedian and has so many fans in Turkey. Whatever he does is acceptable and mostly laughable for many Turks. Therefore, he has got a good degree of creditability as well. I am thinking that 'Yahsi Bati' is the bast Cem Yilmaz movie only comparing to GORA and AROG. As I mentioned I also think that Cem Yilmaz is a clever and funny guy but I was horrified when I saw GORA as I did not like it a bit. I must admit that after three goes I could not watch the entire movie and gave up. With some of its flaws AROG was a good film but not great. I think Yahsi Bati made me laugh more than the other two. I also believe that classification for the film should be +15 as there are way too many jokes containing swear words ***the kinds that are not approved by Turkish people on the other hand used on daily base by many -)*** I appreciate Cem Yilmaz's efforts to make good films and I believe that all three movies were great when it comes to visual work especially Yahsi Bati was superb.

The movie is about two Ottoman officials trying to deliver a diamond from the Sultan to the American President. On the way they get robbed. Penniless they start a journey to find the diamond and go back to their country.

All cast was successful and there were not a single person I disliked in the cast. I also have the feeling that his new project will take us to China and after Yahsi Bati I have a feeling that I am looking forward to it.

Wanted! Cem Yilmaz
sinekritik1 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I am truly disappointed with this movie. OK maybe I was expecting too much but this movie is not even mediocre.

Arog had already some signs of a downturn in Cem Yılmaz's movie making career and this movie is a justification of this observation.

Personally, I couldn't understand what Cem Yılmaz tried to do in this movie. Maybe he tried to follow Şahan Gökbakar's Recep İvedik series which has quiet high box-office receipts though being very low level. There is no storyline and nearly all jokes(being very rare) are based on swearing. The only difference between this movie and Recep İvedik series is the budget but we clearly see that spending more money doesn't necessarily mean making a better movie. In fact, if you are OK with "swearing" comedies, Recep İvedik is much more successful than Yahşi Bati in entertaining the audience.

There are some extremely boring and unnecessary scenes in the movie. Scene transitions are very bad. It is like the movie wasn't edited at all.

This movie can't even be compared to "Gora" or "Her şey çok güzel olacak". Cem Yılmaz keeps spending his credit earned by these movies and his stand-up show.

I don't want to see Cem Yılmaz in "Bank Asya" league, he should be a "Turkcell" super league player. He is quiet an intelligent person and I am sure he can do much better films with his resources.

Next time, I will think twice before buying a ticket for a Cem Yilmaz movie.

Contemporary Turkish sense of humor in the wild west
yagmurhaneke4 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The movie follows the story of two Turks on a mission from the Sultan to deliver a diamond to the American president as a sign of good faith and strong ties. It also is a story within a story as the former is being told by what seems like a con-man trying to sell a worthless pair of boots to a rich collector, and the film's story is a made up by the con-man to authenticate the boots.

The movie itself too, unfortunately, gives the feeling that it was made up on the spot by a half witted con-man, not Turkey's leading comedian and definitely not a filmmaker! Cem Yilmaz is the name that made smart comedy and stand up popular in Turkey, he is both the Robbie Williams and Ricky Gervais of Turkey. Mirroring the success of his 10 year long stand up career, his earlier films 'Everything will be Beautiful' and GORA were also hugely successful both in terms of box office and the audience response. Although GORA and its follow up AROG are high budgeted Scare Movie equivalents of Turkey, they too had certain quality in terms of their comedy as time, energy and brains were put in to their scripts, even though AROG was a huge disappointment in terms of its comedy.

Yahsi Batı, however, is a new low not only in Mr. Yilmaz's filmography but that of Turkish comedy! The movie is hardly comedic, save two scenes (one of being robbed the other where the characters meet the heroin of the movie), its story line is beyond obvious and it manages to be boring in every sense of the word after 20 minutes. Interestingly enough after 20 minutes the movie shows its true intentions: being the longest and most expensive Cola Turca commercial EVER! Let me put it this way, the main sponsor, Cola Turca has spend enough money on the movie to make its brand more obvious and in your face than Ipod was in Blade 3!

I will not even bother to discuss this commercial as a film, it lacks everything from story line to dialog to acting to editing. What it has is plenty swear words, partial nudity, good picture quality and Mr Yilmaz's hard to hate face. But I must admit, I started hating that childish face of his after 2.5 hours stolen from my life.

Do yourselves a favor: STAY AWAY from this commercial!

Cem Yilmaz getting richer. Turkish Cinema... not so much
ulnoyman18 January 2010
When I posted a review of A.R.O.G. a couple years ago I wrote that "Cem Yilmaz is financing his future good movie with a bad one". Judging by the pattern he followed until that day, I hoped that his next movie would a good one such as "Hokkabaz" or "Hersey Cok Güzel Olacak"... I was wrong.

Despite the wonderful visual effects, impeccable decor and costume, electrifying music, and so many other technical achievements worthy of praise, the movie is ultimately a bad one. The screenplay is too long and inflated with so many witless jokes. It is formulaic, repetitive and unoriginal. It is basically G.O.R.A. (or A.R.O.G.) in the wild west. Turkish comedy should outgrow fart-jokes, accent-abuse and overused unsubtle cross-culture references.

Even the decor has problems, since there is a nylon American flag in Sheriff Lloyd's office, and poker is played with plastic chips. After all that attention to detail, stuff like that ruins everything.

The fact that the movie is a lengthy commercial for a cola drink is also disturbing.

One clever thing Cem Yilmaz did with the script is to make it a story told by a shifty-eyed antique dealer. That saves him from a whole lot of criticism. Maybe if he had hired a professional screenplay doctor from Hollywood instead of a visual effects artist, the movie would be a much better one.

What's wrong with Turkish comedy cinema?
snncy20008 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Yahsi Bati (beatiful west -- a word play with wild west // vahsi bati) Cem Yilmaz, a great Turkish comedian who was first person to perform stand-up comedy in front of masses. We all loved him, his bright jokes not only makes us laugh but also it's a kind of privilege to get the grasp of it and it feels smarter.

After a great success of his parodies, he came to cinema and it was good if not great with his first movie GORA. The only problem was if you'd watched his stage shows (many of us did that for many times already) GORA did not have much to offer differently. It was funny, it was well thought and the production was OK. But it was still a bit dull somehow.

He continued with very similar comedy movie "AROG" and now it is "Yahsi Bati". In "Yahsi Bati" he is making fun of old western clichés. But he also (somewhat) build his western story around two Ottoman gentlemen who are visiting America in 1900s.

Again we see very good production, nice costumes etc. So what's wrong with the movie? First of first, the movie is pushing a story that is very very hard to buy for the audience. OK, we need to consider every movie in it's context. If your watching LOTR you don't question a troll because they do happen in this kind of world. You believe and get carried away because the director makes you imagine and believe this realm at very first stage of the movie. Yahsi Bati does not have this. Probably Cem Yilmaz had seen this problem and the story is told to us by a todays character. It may have been better if this story telling were more obvious and we get much of the shoe seller and his friends along the movie.

The movie is coming and going at the edges of being absurd to verbal comedy. There are so many scenes that you ask yourself "do I need to believe this sh*t sake of the movie?" Some say it's full of swearing. I don't agree, there is not much swearing and unfortunately these scenes were the only ones that we all laughed.

Again and again, there is no solid story line. You can make a comedy even an absurd comedy but you need to have a good story, period. Things happen so quick or so late and the crack is usually born prematurely. Let's take "indian father losing everything in poker" scene, hey come on I can shoot that scene better and funnier! Cem Yilmaz had better get a real director next time!

Last but not least, an average Turkish cinema goer's profile is very low in terms of cinema. I mean, many see that going to a movie is like a trade, I pay the ticket and you make me laugh, thats it. This is not cinema. This is using the silver screen to sell your stupid show again and again. If you say the silver screen abused so many times before than I say it's a must to object this every time.

You don't lose much if you don't see this movie..

I'm sorry.

Terribly boring screenplay with quality costumes and art directing
deblod15 January 2010
Since Cem Yilmaz's movies are becoming worse and worse every time (i.e. A.R.O.G), my expectations were really low on this movie. On some of the aspects, these were met. For starters, the screenplay is really dull, based on all the Turkish cliché jokes about Wild West. The jokes are not funny at all and the level of them are too low. And as in most of the movies of Cem Yilmaz, the scenario is not coherent, it's like jokes about Wild West in a stand-up comedy, which have been cast in a movie and glued together. The worst thing is that there is an inconsistency in the movie; it's supposed to be Ottoman Turks in Wild West but all the lead characters (including the Americans) are acting as if they are Turkish such as the Sheriff of Cannonball and his family. Still, the art directors has done a high toned job - they must have had worked a lot on the storyboard, there are real nice scenes through the movie - I have to say the costumes are quite good, too. In conclusion, it turns out to be a movie not to waste time on, maybe to be watched on a Sunday afternoon on TV while doing some other stuff.

Big disappointment
Sinan_Ozel22 August 2011
Spending large amounts of money is not enough for a good movie. But in a country like Turkey where capital is really rare Cem Yilmaz was lucky. He is a great comedian, and has proved himself as a great entertainer. Thus it was not difficult for him to secure the investment for this big project. That's why we were filled with expectations more than the usual. At the end it was a big disappointment; the script was not strong. The story was weak and so were the jokes. I am sure the next movie of Cem Yilmaz will be full of lessons learned from this movie. We, the Turkish audience, are expecting the next big hit from him. Our expectations are justified when we think about his talent.
