An average Christmas is here
TheLittleSongbird3 March 2024
'Christmas Time is Here' (2021)

Opening thoughts: GAC Family have literally just about been formed, but it's not faring too badly. Sure, there have been misfires, such as 'The Great Christmas Switch'. There have also been winners, primarily 'Much Ado About Christmas'. Also saw 'Christmas Time is Here' for the leads, have seen both Rukiya Bernard and DeShawne Williams in other things and have seen that they can be good with the right material. Was very willing to give it a fair chance, despite the storyline not sounding particularly promising.

Feelings overall for 'Christmas Time is Here' were slightly above mixed feelings. There are quite a lot of things done well, with the best aspects being close to great. There are though some major shortcomings that stop it from being above decent, and it does very little new with an overused formula (an overuse that one does feel). 'Christmas Time is Here' is a long way from being a disaster and is a superior film to 'The Great Christmas Switch' for instance, but it doesn't have the same amount or kind of spark that 'Much Ado About Christmas' had.

Good things: Bernard is the best aspect here, despite having reservations about her character she gives a one hundred percent committed performance and is charming. The supporting cast do competently, even in cliched roles.

Production values are attractive to look at, the scenery is beautiful in particular. The music is easy on the ears and doesn't feel too much. There are charming and light hearted moments sprinkled throughout.

Bad things: However, Williams comes over as surprisingly robotic and one note, while also strained early on. He and Bernard have no chemistry together, something that surprised me as somebody who has seen them act with each other before and very well. Will agree about Bernard's character not being well written, the dishonesty is overdone and mean spirited and she is too unrealistically unethical. On the whole the chemistry is bland and walk through like, indicative of writers that were too indifferent in fleshing out the relationship and a director that had their mind on other things. The writing is too corny and doesn't flow naturally on the whole.

The pacing is all over the place, the film is dull due to seeing on screen pretty much exactly what was to be expected, while also having a lot of jumping about, am sure that more parts were filmed that somehow didn't make it into the film. The ending is too neat. The story is very predictable and underdeveloped, very familiar material here not given any freshness. The stuff with the watch was a promising angle but done nothing with, big missed opportunity there.

Closing thoughts: All in all, average.

5/10.

Had Potential But Too Many Flaws
mamachikn16 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been a much better movie, but fell short of its potential.

First of all, it was wrong to have Nia be completely unethical in her business. She should have recused herself from being a realtor to Julian. She would have lost her license if she lied to a client like that. I'm sure realtors watching this were duly shocked.

The inn had no guests. None. The dad was carrying towels, but to whom? Never saw a single one. No dining room, no kitchen, no guest rooms were ever shown. Toward the end, Julian's boss was a guest, as we see her coming down the stairs. The only guest in the whole movie. The final celebration was a public one, with the town invited. They were not guests of the inn. Just odd.

The watch. Nia's watch, given to her by her mother. It stopped when her mother died. The historical society head knew the story of the watch. It had been passed down for generations from mother to daughter. According to the story, the watch stopped when the ancestor's true love was presumed dead, but started again when the true love miraculously appeared alive. Apparently neither Nia nor her father ever heard this story!! The watch would start working when Julian was there with her. Nia had no idea why. Her dad never mentioned why either. That's ridiculous. The movie would have been much better if this story were carried along throughout, like a magical watch that gave evidence of true love.

Then when the inn was sold, Nia discovers a folded document that is a registration form for the inn being marked as a historical site, which idea was mentioned early on, but never pursued. This folded document was in an antique picture frame, that suddenly appeared in the story at the very end. Why no mention earlier? It would have been better if the frame contained a historical photo underneath the top photo. No one would place a small, tightly folded piece of paper in a frame. Much more likely a photo. Not totally strange, but could have been thought out better. And it just appeared as a prop for five minutes in the script. Then the frame was not needed further, so that was that. These elements were underused and would have made a much more interesting story.

The movie was slow. Similar to many other Hallmark movies. The actors were good. But the latest movies have a pursed kiss, not a genuine loving romantic kiss.

Too much deception
Jackbv12321 November 2021
Another save the family inn vs the big time developer story. This one is the common variation of wanting it to go to the right buyer who will respect the property. And the corporate representative is under constant pressure to close. All of this is the same old stuff.

Almost all of these movies have to have a face off between the leads early in the movie. This one wasn't quite as antagonistic as some and it led into a cute official introduction between the two.

Rukiya Bernard and Dewshane Williams have done several Hallmark movies together mostly as close friends to the leads. Now they are the leads for Hallmark's new competition GAC Family. There's obvious chemistry between the two actors screaming to get out, but for too long there is real deception between the two characters. She is working against the direct wishes of her client. This is real dishonesty, not just hiding a secret identity, or other "white lie". Either way, it kills the effect of their chemistry. .

Williams doesn't convince me in his early efforts as the rigid corporate big shot (aka the mean guy). Seems like he is trying too hard. Maybe that's the point - maybe it's because Julian is trying to convince himself.

There is a bit of mysticism with the watch and its backstory.

By 3/4ths through, the pieces are in place for a very predictable ending which is even more of the same old stuff.

Bernard and Williams sing together early in the movie and it is just average. However, Bernard and Tom Pickett, Mia's dad, sing a very nice Silent Night near the end.

Really Wanted to Like this Movie
pattersonjamie-1207915 November 2021
I really wanted to like this movie. The story is cute and should been really good. The acting was good, but the movie was extremely slow. There was very litter substantiated. Twice, time was spent with long periods of singing, most likely to fill time.

Dissappointed
crosemnnc26 December 2021
I love Rukiya Bernard. I loved the connection and chemistry she has had with Dewshane Williams in the past. There was no chemistry in this movie. He was almost robotic or mechanical in his actions and speech. I was so looking forward to this movie with the 2 of them. The plot wasn't bad, has been done several times. So not sure if it's the writing, directing, or what, but it was a disappointment.

Sorry, Rukiya, the script let you down.
rebekahrox19 November 2021
Love Rukiya, but lord this was boring. Even she was struggling to save this. They tried to inject some chemistry by pairing her with Deshawn with whom she had had a successful paring previously, but no. On the upside, loved the duet at the end. Lovely. Who knew she could sing too?

Time is slow at Christimas in here
geegee-7766121 November 2023
This film just plodded along, like hands on the watch.

Everyone seemed sedated. The actors sleepily went through their lines, leads not really generating any attraction to each other. The writing was unenergetic, as nothing really happened - even the compulsory conflict "tearing" the couple apart barely registered. The solutions to problems fell to the leads' laps, already foreseen by the entire viewership from the beginning.

I did kind of perk up when they introduced some heritage elements, such as the photos and the female lead's old watch: I thought we're in for some plot twist. This opportunity was disappointingly wasted, and the watch concept remained random and contrived.

I'll add an extra star, however, for the location scout and the cinematographer, for making the inn and the village look so appealing - I now really want to spend Christmas at Pine Valley Inn! (If only it existed.)

All and all, unexciting but harmless and cosy nonetheless. I can imagine this would be suitable to watch during Christmas Day siesta; nothing to alert you from your semi-slumber.

I love them but...
beepagan7 January 2022
I don't believe Hallmark would ever have let "Nia" been completely deceptive and still be the lead. Nothing could save this. Sad because I like she and Williams in past efforts.

Such a sweet lovely movie
kjc-3220510 December 2023
The cast is fantastic. I just love Rukiya Bernard and Dewshane Williams as a onscreen couple. Jill Morrison is amazing as the partner/friend. The reviews that condemn this "deception" are being hypocritical. What Hallmark movie doesn't involve hiding a truth or concealment of a goal. Give me a break. These reviewers need to dig deep into their unconscious/conscious bias. When the story line involves a leading character who is a person of color, she's being "deceptive" "sneaky" or "unacceptable". Give me a break! If this was not a black or brown woman, these harsh negative characterization of the totally endearing sweet Nia would never been ascribed. Ordinarily, the Pine Valley town would be cliche, but here it works. It feels real and authentic without losing the down-home Christmas vibe. There is a magic in this film that I absolutely love. Nia and Julian meet by chance over a string of Santa lights. Even though they are at odds over their separate real estate ambitions, they cannot ignore what fate has in store for them in this charming romantic comedy. Both have a lot to learn from each other in about each other so that they can see the bigger picture. Love, history, and tradition. Great movie!

Next time more
ivelina_tzvqtkova7 December 2022
Maybe I was expecting more, because I love Christmas movies, but this wasn't so Christmasy. No chemistry at all between the main characters. Rukiya Bernard was acting nice, but here partner was ridiculous in this movie ( don't want to offense, may be he is a great actor, but this wasn't the script for him) and she can't save a hole movie by herself. Also I was missing the winter cozy filling, the actors were dressed like is spring. We couldn't see any small town atmosphere, no so much people were seen in the town, or the small cafes and restaurants where the locals see each other all the time, weren't so believable.

Simple, yet heart-warming.
gfrasmd14 November 2021
GAC seems to have found the gentle touch that Hallmark used to have and fails to retrieve in most of its recent productions. Here, straight from Hallmark, they re-propose Rukiya Bernard and Dewshane Williams. The plot is not very original and quite simple. Most of the action revolves around the interaction of two main characters. This could have been the recipe for a disaster. Yet, the results are quite good. The lead actors are lively, funny and likeable. They work very well together and do create the feeling of a real attraction between them, amid the skirmishes. Hence, they make the story flow convincingly to the predictable conclusion. In summary, not a spectacular film, yet one still able to provide nice Yuletide entertainment.

Very Charming!!
JazzCat6412 August 2022
I honestly don't understand why this one rated low by some. Maybe because the leads are not vanilla? Hmmm... I have seen generic Hallmark movies that were horrific, and they rated higher than this so i guess individuals are rating based on something else other than, story, acting and chemistry between the leads. I would say okay script, simple but effective. The acting was better than even some of the cream of the crop Hallmark leads. Good chemistry but that's a given because they have been in several movies together. Rukiya is adorable as usual because she has been in a lot of Hallmark Movies as the best friend, so it is nice to see her get a lead role.
