Chef Kevin Dundon has cooked for celebrities around the world, competed on the U.K. edition of Dancing with the Stars and hosts his own cooking show, Modern Irish Food. But there is nothing quite like cooking for the Queen.
Back in 1992, the monarch turned up at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in Calgary, where Dundon was called upon to whip up a special meal.
“There was so much buzz around the hotel—it was completely refurbished before she arrived,” recalls Dundon, the owner of Dubrody Country House Hotel and Cookery School in County Wexford, Ireland, and the master chef at Raglan Road,...

An angry satire, Thank You For Bombing, the latest film from Barbara Eder (Inside America) takes dead aim upon the industry of journalism in war zones. No one is sacred in Eder’s eyes as she satirizes the veteran reporter haunted by demons of the past, a pretty young correspondent who will do anything for a story, and a rouge reporter in search of a war. The waiting is the hardest part and they kill the time in a number of ways from Zumba to opioids.
Told in the three symmetrical stories that intersect in the film’s third act, the first finds an Austrian reporter, Ewald (Erwin Steinhauser) on his way to Afghanistan. Capturing a ghost of his past he discovers a man, now flying under a German passport that may or may not have been involved murder of his cameraman in Bosnia. Apparently this is not the first episode for Ewald,...

The killing of Osama bin Laden represents a triumph for President Obama's embrace of targeted military strikes, including drone attacks and covert operations. Tara McKelvey on the dangers-and brilliance-of relying on Special Ops.
Barack Obama was the first presidential candidate to campaign on a platform of targeted military strikes, or so claim some legal scholars. George W. Bush may have relied on President Pervez Musharraf to fight the battle against terrorists in Pakistan, but Obama took things into his own hands. He brought together Special Operations and CIA operatives, who worked closely together in Pakistan, and used covert ventures to go after al Qaeda in Pakistan in a way that Bush never had.

The so-called American Dream is little more than a fantasy for many Americans. We're told to pursue an ideal life of finding a good job, owning a home, and living in a happy, stable family situation. But for much of America, this life isn't reality and never will be.
The impossible disconnect between the increasingly mythological American Dream and life's harsh realities is the underlying theme of Inside America, an unfiltered and unflinching look at the lives of six high school students in Brownsville, Texas. A narrative film with the look and feel of a documentary, Inside America (which had its Us premiere at SXSW on March 14 at the Acc Vimeo Theater) is jarringly, agonizingly realistic.
Curiously, while Inside America was filmed in Brownsville, it's actually an Austrian movie. Austrian director and writer Barbara Eder spent a year as an exchange student in Brownsville in 1994; her experiences during that time...

First time director and University of Texas student Barbara Eden's film
Inside America is one that has the look and feel of a documentary, and that's far from a criticism. It's an unflinching and often uncomfortable look at the disparate lives of a handful of teenagers in a Brownsville, Texas high school, as they struggle for identity and survival in a cultural morass of racism, crime, and class conflicts. The film offers few solutions to its exposure of societal wounds, instead choosing to expose the harsh truths about its subjects.
The film focuses on six teens -- Patty (Patty Barrera), a young Latina who's barely surviving school and pinning the hopes of her future on her troubled boyfriend Carlos (Carlos Benavides), who's in the country illegally, working at a drive-through tortilla factory, and slowly getting more and more embroiled in an escalating gang conflict. At the other end of...

Director: Barbara Eder Writer: Barbara Eder Starring: Patty Barrera, Carlos Benavides, Edward K. Bravo Metal detectors welcome us to Hanna High School in Brownsville, Texas. On the other side of the threshold, we are greeted by police monitors and drug dogs in the hallways. Trust is not a virtue to be found in Hanna High School, the one thing that the rich and the poor students have in common (other than the American flag that they must pledge their allegiance to on a daily basis) is that they are all bad; otherwise, Barbara Eder’s Inside America works as an analysis of juxtapositions. The film starts as a group of poor teenagers steal beer from a neighborhood convenience store, then we cut to an Rotc drill squad raising the U.S. flag in front of the high school. Later the Rotc drill squad’s maneuvers are juxtaposed with cheerleader practice...

Austrian born director, Barbara Eder did a student exchange year at Hanna High School in Brownsville, Texas, on which she based her first feature film, Inside America.
Previous to that she studied film directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and made numerous short films like Sleepless (2002), Tod, Teufel & Kommerz (2004) and short documentaries including Himmel, HÖLLE, Rosenkranz (2005) and Harald Serafin Auf Hoher See (2006).
The Inside America Director talks about her firsthand experience living in the border town of Brownsville, Texas, the process of how the film was made and how she was compelled to tell the tragic stories of her classmates.
Heyuguys: When most people think of high school exchange programs, exotic and foreign lands come to mind. Usually a pleasant high school experience in a big city.

Inside America is a study of institutionalized behavior turning its lens to Brownsville, South Texas and to conditions that may produce either a homegrown terrorist or several individuals that are dangerous to themselves and others. The images present in a racially mixed community along the Texas-Mexico borderland are the antithesis of the American exceptionalism on display in the Jersey Shore and MTV’s adaptation of the British sitcom Skins: this is what rouge capitalism producers – an immigration pool that came here to satisfy a demand to find jobs and opportunities shut out.
The institutions writer/director Barbara Eder studies are an educational system broken by security that interrupts an English class for a random backpack check, the schools Rotc, and foster families. The South by Southwest Film Festival announced its feature film line-up Wednesday, piling heaps of cinematic goodness on an already stellar program that includes Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, Duncan Jones’ Source Code, Ti West’s The Innkeepers, Conan O’Brien’s tour documentary, and the latest Simon Pegg-Nick Frost comedy, Paul, with Seth Rogen.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) returns to the festival with her latest film, Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried, after the writer-director spoke on a screenwriting panel in 2009.
Plus a few favorites from the Sundance Film Festival last month, like Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, and Max Winkler’s Ceremony.
I’m extremely excited, even if I’m already having flashbacks to intense sleep deprivation. Like the last two years, I’ll be on the ground covering as much of the festival as I can within the packed 9 days of screenings,...

The South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) just announced their entire 2011 feature film lineup, and there’s isn’t a lot of note, with regards to this blog’s focus.
Titles you should be aware of – all of which we’ve previously profiled on Shadow And Act – include, Victoria Mahoney’s feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky (which will actually make its world debut at the Berlin Film Festival later this month); plus Blacktino, the first feature film from writer/director Aaron Burns, a self-described “blacktino nerd from Austin, Texas,” who got his start at Robert Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios doing visual effects; Benda Bilili, a documentary about a band of homeless, disabled Congolese; and last, but not least, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, a documentary about the black man that happens to be the man behind the puppet (which also played at Sundance).

Apart from the classic auteurs in the Special Presentations section, the 39th Festival du nouveau cinéma will be filled to the gills in new works from across the globe. I view the extremely popular film festival as sort of a B-side for film festival circuit items that generally find a spot in a major film fest such as Cannes and afterwards would normally fall through the cracks. Think the Nyff's much wilder, Canadian cousin. Over 295 films - this includes shorts, fiction and documentary, animation, retrospectives, tributes, professional panels, outdoor interactive installations, the festival which takes place between the 13th to the 24th of October, furiously promotes not only world talent, but local French Canadian filmmakers. Among the notable titles, we have Michelangelo Frammartino's Le Quattro volte, Olivier Assayas' Carlos and Alex de la Iglesia's The Last Circus and Wang Bing will be in town for a Master Class for Venice-winning The Ditch.
