I actually felt that I have been more generous to the HBO Perry Mason than it deserved. I can see why they want in to do it differently, it was glossy, expensive and a tad boring.
By now I know, there will be no more Perry Mason. It ends after series two. It's been cancelled.
Well Chapter 15 finally gets to the crux of the plot. Lydell McCutcheon was involved with the Japanese in breaking embargoes to sell oil to them for great profit.
His son Brook was bringing unnecessary heat with his dicey business dealings and deviant sexual practices.
When Perry Mason confronts Lydell, he finds someone else is calling the shots. Someone who has taken people in their confidences, tracked people and had incriminating photos of them. This includes Hamilton Burger, hence why he suddenly offered a deal to the defence.
The episode ends with the ultimate puppet mistress playing the piano, not some grand play by Perry Mason in the courtroom.
I was left thinking; is that it? The series started so promisingly with various plot threads. Then they just offer the villain up this way.
No wonder the show got the boot.
