The words “slasher film” and “musical” are not often heard together in the same sentence. That may be about to change, thanks to Vincent D’Onofrio and his directorial debut Don't Go in the Woods, which opens in New York today. This “slasher musical” tracks a rock band as they attempt to write songs in the wilds of upstate New York only to get picked off by a mallet-wielding psychopath. Below, the star of Full Metal Jacket and Law and Order: Criminal Intent talks about how he came up with the idea for his genre-fusing film, why he...

Kind of a bland week for new theatrical releases but pretty much on par with what you would expect for January. Disney continues their string of 3D re-releases with what some would call their best animated movie of all time, Beauty and the Beast, while Mark Wahlberg smuggles some drugs and goes head to head with Giovanni Ribisi in the action-thriller Contraband. Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton star in the gospel musical Joyful Noise, while Meryl Streep's latest Oscar bid The Iron Lady expands to over 800 screens this weekend as well. In select theatres, we have Xavier Gens' post-apocalyptic thriller The Divide, plus Vincent D'Onofrio's horror-musical Don't Go in the Woods and the indie drama Albatross. After the crazy opening weekend that The Devil Inside had, it seems like the box office is anyone's game. What will you be checking out this weekend? Beauty and the Beast...

Now on various VOD platforms is Tribeca Films' Don't Go In The Woods, which will begin a limited theatrical run in New York City tomorrow. Gearing up for the release, we've now landed the two very Nsfw stills to go along with the official trailer and one sheet. They're Insanely gory! " 'Don't Go in the Woods' is sound advice, especially when there's a killer on the loose. First-time director Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent") explores love, greed and ruthlessness in this twisted musical/horror hybrid, telling the story of a young band who heads to the woods to get away from their everyday lives in order to focus on writing new songs. Hoping to walk away from the trip with new tunes that will score them their big break, they instead find themselves in the middle of a nightmare beyond comprehension."...

Don't Go In The Woods has the special distinction of being the first film that can truly be called a "slasher musical." Directed by Vincent D'Onofrio, Don't Go in The Woods follows the members of a sensitive pop/rock band desperate to write some new songs as they head into the woods sans cell phones to have a couple of nights with no distractions. When their girlfriends/groupies show up to party, the evening and subsequent morning take a terrifying turn for the worst. The Oscar-nominated D'Onofrio skillfully directs this genre-blending melodious shocker with an exciting cast of newcomers and edgy musicians. With original music and lyrics by Sam Bisbee, Don't Go In The Woods provides an unexpected thrill ride, switching unpredictably back and forth between indie-pop musical moments and terror. You know Vincent D'Onofrio as an actor from Law & Order: Criminal Intent, or maybe going back to Men in Black or Full Metal Jacket, but now it's time to meet him as a director. With Don't Go In The Woods, a movie described as a musical/horror hybrid, D'Onofrio steps behind the camera for the first time as a feature director. For your first look at the film, which premieres on video on demand on December 26 and in theaters in New York and Los Angeles in January, check out the film's exclusive trailer below. As you can tell, this isn't really your average story of dumb kids getting chopped up in the woods, with a lot more music-- and a lot more of a meta attitude-- to go along with the usual spooky visuals and high-pitched screams. Here's the film's official synopsis if you want to know more. Don't Go...
